NEW RESTAURANT UNVEILED AT PLANTSPLUS GARDEN CENTRE NEW RESTAURANT OPENS AFTER HUGE TRANSFORMATION
P
lantsplus Garden Centre has officially welcomed the opening of its new restaurant this May. The Newcastle branch of Berwick Garden Centre Ltd, near Ponteland, has created around 15 new jobs in the area. Having undergone a huge transformation across the store for the past year, the restaurant will have its doors open to customers 7 days a week, throughout the year. Serving breakfast, lunches, light bites, coffee and cake, its commitment is to serve fresh, homemade food with locally sourced produce wherever possible. Vegetarian, vegan and glutenfree options means there is something for everyone to enjoy. The outdoor seating area will also allow for dog owners to experience the restaurant looking out towards the plant department. Seating 250 people, Plantsplus is hoping to emulate the success of both Berwick and Dunbar Garden Centre restaurants, with Dunbar holding a Taste Our Best award from Visit Scotland – awardees must keep food miles to a
6
minimum; show information about where your food has come from; friendly staff who know about the origins of the food on your plate; keeping the menu options fresh and seasonal. A bright and sunny area tucked around the corner of the restaurant will be kept for the use of parties, visiting groups, and private functions. If you would like to book this area, please contact the centre on the details at the bottom of the page. The addition of the restaurant will bring Plantsplus up to speed with customer expectation of garden centres as a day-out shopping experience. The store has increased its retail offerings to include books, gifts, cards and pet supplies and is also continuing with the upgrading of its nursery facilities. Work is continuing around the store with as little disruption to customers as possible, with the carpark to be resurfaced and the front entrance to be renovated.

LOOKING AFTER EYES SINCE 1933 LOCATED ON BRIDGE STREET IN THE HEART OF MORPETH, ROBERT GREEN & PARTNERS OFFER A STATE OF THE ART SERVICE FOR YOUR EYES.
R
obert Green and Partners Opticians are Morpeth’s longest established optometrists, dating back to 1933 when David Rae first opened the practice.
David later joined forces with Robert Green, re-naming the business Rae & Green and in 1985 the current name was adopted. The current owner, Kevin Gray, joined in 1987 becoming a partner in 1992 and sole owner in 2013. The business was originally located in Newgate Street but as it began to expand and out-grow the property the decision to relocate to new premises was made in 2012. The practice is now located in a prominent location on Bridge Street where it overlooks the Telford Bridge. The ethos has always been to try to combine high standards of clinical care with a broad range of quality optical products at competitive prices. With this in mind the practice has been fitted with bespoke displays to help make clients’ experience as comfortable as possible, and the business invested in advanced screening and diagnostic equipment to elevate clinical standards. Consultations are unhurried, in comfortable air-conditioned consulting rooms, where patients’ needs and available management options are fully discussed. A full range of NHS optical services are on offer, including enhanced services such as childrens’ vision screening and intra-ocular pressure referral refinement. The optical market has become extremely competitive in recent years, and the practice is able to offer complete 16
pairs of spectacles from £30 through to custom-made bespoke frames at nearly £400. In between these is a wide range of ‘designer’ brands that will be familiar to many. Lenses from manufacturers such as Zeiss and Nikon are available and we have a strong affiliation with Essilor who design and manufacture some of the most advanced ophthalmic lenses and coatings available. Staff are trained to be fully conversant with these so that they can readily offer advice and answer your queries, and a significant investment is in training for all of our staff. Children are well catered for too, with a wide range of free frames available via the NHS voucher scheme. A well equipped optical laboratory on-site with a stock of lenses means that a wide range of spectacles can be made up quickly, sometimes within the hour- very handy for emergencies for example if you break your glasses, but the aim is always to turn around the majority of jobs as quickly as possible. What can set a good independent practice apart is a more personal service, and patients consistently feed back that this is something R Green & Partners are good at. Getting to know your clients means you are in an excellent position to deliver the best service to meet their particular needs. Consultations are by appointment, telephone 01670 513175 or call in; new patients are always welcome. R Green & Partners Opticians, 62 Bridge Street, Morpeth, NE61 1PQ www.greenopticians.co.uk
Looking after eyes since 1933, R Green & Partners offer unhurried clinical eye tests for all the family in comfortable fully equipped consulting rooms. Designer frames and sunglasses from Ray Ban, Ralph Lauren, Armani,Ted Baker, Versace,Tom Ford, Michael Kors and more, we have something for everyone. We are a Lindberg+ Partner stocking the exclusive Spirit, NOW and Strip ranges of these stylish and iconic frames. Most types of contact lenses fitted.

MY PET HQ THE MORPETH PET STORE PUSHING BOUNDARIES FOR THE BENEFITS OF PET WELLBEING
B
ased in the heart of Morpeth, My Pet HQ isn't your average pet store. Founded by Caroline and Diane Coppen, the expansive, bright, open space plays host not only to a well-stocked store but also to workshops, social events and even a grooming salon. With a layout more similar to a lifestyle store than that of a traditional pet store, My Pet HQ offers a welcoming space for animals and their owners to relax, socialise and shop. "Since we opened almost a year ago," Caroline revealed, "we've tried to push the boundaries and help pet owners become more educated in not just the physical needs, but the emotional needs of their animal too." Founded on the beliefs of value, education and fun, My Pet HQ's ethos is all about putting your pet's needs first, and educating pet owners to make more informed decisions, and become better pet owners as a result. Picking up a number of local business awards, the store, which was the first in Morpeth to offer opening hours until 8pm, five days a week, has gained overwhelming support from the people of Morpeth. Diane explained, "We really look to respond to what our customers need, and for us, offering our customers more convenient opening hours really made sense 18
because it was a lot more convenient for customers wanting to pop in after work. Likewise, we were constantly being asked why we didn't have pet grooming facilities in our store and whether we had any plans to offer the service in future. I guess you could say we're really are a brand who values our customers' needs and listens to what they've got to say." In keeping with the brand's commitment to an animal focused approach to pet care, the new My Pet Groomers offers a range of natural, herbal based grooming products from Herbal Dog Co, alongside traditional grooming products. Speaking on the decision to work offer chemical-free, alternative products, Caroline explained: “A lot of professional grooming shampoos can be quite abrasive, making them potential irritants for not just the animal’s skin but also the groomer’s hands! Eventually we’d like to move to using all natural products and encouraging pet owners to choose products free from any nasties.” Currently open from 10am to 6pm, 5 days a week, My Pet Groomers, is just the beginning of My Pet HQ's expansion, with My Pet Cafe currently under construction. CONCENTRATION: Ashington District Male Voice Choir during rehearsal
BUSY TIMES FOR ASHINGTON MALE VOICE CHOIR
A
hectic few weeks for Ashington & District Male Voice Choir have come to an end and choir members can feel very proud of what has been achieved.
The period opened up with our return visit to Warkworth and although the audience was not as big as last year, our performance together with that of our new guest performer, Deborah Barry, was hugely appreciated. The second concert for the Councillor Murray, the Civic head of Northumberland County Council's charity appeal saw us perform in a very different venue, the Council Chambers in County Hall. Susan Robertson was our guest and joined in with the choir in a few pieces. Another huge success with around ÂŁ1400 being raised to go with a similar amount raised at the first concert in Wooler in the Autumn. How could we surpass these performances? Well, Neil with the help of Derek made sure that this could be done and we had a few weeks to prepare for our own main event, The Annual Celebration Concert in Holy Sepulchre Church Member numbers at rehearsal have been excellent at all times resulting in concert turnouts being around 30, a huge improvement. This was seen at our Annual Concert and what a difference it makes. Before long we'll have to ask for bigger stages to accommodate us. We were pleased to see a fairly full church when we entered following our warm up in the church hall and it was during our warm up 20
we saw what was in store for us with our guests. Tyne Signature was the first time a Barber's Shop Quartet had been our guest artists but by the end of the evening it was pretty certain that it would not be the last. We showed what we are capable of right from the opening with 'Stout Hearted Men' Neil's lead was as always, impeccable and the Barber's Shop Quartet which includes Jonathan, were amazing considering that they have only been together since the Autumn. The name of Ashington & District Male Voice Choir is certainly drawing attention on our communities. Throughout the last twelve months there has been an effort to recruit more members and this has been with the help of a grant from the REED Foundation and the Community Foundation. Some new members joined in the Autumn and have made a significant impact and its now the choir's intention to attract more gentlemen to join and enjoy singing in a friendly group. It's very easy; there are no auditions and prospective members do not have to be able to read music, just have an interest in and enjoy music. There's also the chance to 'try it out' for six weeks. An ideal chance for anyone to come to Stakeford & Bomarsund Welfare at 7-00pm on a Thursday evening. Ashington & District Male Voice Choir has entertained the community and helped many charities benefit for over 100 years and it is hoped that this will continue for decades to come but this can only be possible if new members come and enjoy singing with some very enthusiastic men.

DEALING WITH DENTAL TRAUMA Joanne Duggan, Principal Dental Surgeon at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice offers some first aid tips on dealing with a broken or knocked out tooth.
T
he lighter nights are here and that means kids playing out longer, cycling, cricket and family days out. However, this also mean more chance of you or your children falling off their bike, scooter or skates!
My son had an accident when playing outside in the summer; his front tooth was hit with a tennis racket and it broke in half. As a dentist I obviously knew what to do, but would you know what to do if you or a loved one was faced with a dental emergency?
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TOOTH WAS BROKEN OR FRACTURED IN AN ACCIDENT
If an accident means your adult tooth has broken, keep the piece of tooth if you have it and contact your dentist for emergency treatment. Sometimes if the fragment of tooth is available, it can be bonded back into position on your tooth. Alternatively your dentist will use white resin filling material to build the tooth back to its original shape. Any tooth that has been broken in an accident will need to be assessed by a dentist and will usually need follow up visits to monitor the health of the tooth. If it is a baby tooth that has broken the child will need to see a dentist for an emergency assessment. The broken piece of tooth will not normally be used as with an adult one. Realistically the treatment available will largely depend on the 26 26
child’s age, stage of development and ability to cope with dental treatment. Hopefully you will never need to use the advice above, but however well we try to protect our loved ones, accidents will always happen. After any accident that involves your teeth or mouth, it is always best to seek immediate dental advice.
WHAT TO DO IF A TOOTH IS KNOCKED OUT If a baby tooth is knocked out we would normally leave the tooth out, accept the gap, and wait for the adult tooth to erupt. However sometimes when an infant or child has knocked their mouth there can be quite a lot of bleeding. Injuries of the mouth often appear far worse as the soft gums can be damaged and bleed. Firstly try to stop the bleeding by applying a handkerchief over the area with light pressure. Then contact your dentist for an emergency appointment to properly assess and provide appropriate treatment. We want the injured child to receive the right care and follow-up appointments with the dentist may also be necessary. When an adult tooth is knocked out the advice is different and it should be dealt with as a real dental emergency as we want to try to save the tooth. The sooner you get help from your dentist the greater the chance of saving it. If you need help dealing with a dental trauma please contact us at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402. We are located at 30 Front Street East, Bedlington, NE22 5AA.

If you are unable to place the tooth back into the socket then put the tooth into a glass of milk.
FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE FIRST AID STEPS IF YOU’RE FACED WITH A BROKEN OR KNOCKED OUT TOOTH: 1. STAY CALM
By following the steps below, you can hopefully limit the damage and improve the prospect of saving the tooth.
2. DO NOT TOUCH THE ROOT OF THE TOOTH
Pick it up by the crown, (the white part you would normally see in your mouth).
3. RINSE ANY DIRT FROM THE TOOTH
If there is dirt on the tooth then briefly wash it under cold running water for 10 seconds and then reposition it back into the socket and bite down on a handkerchief to keep it in the correct position. If it is a baby tooth that has been knocked out then do not try to re-implant the tooth.
4. PUT THE TOOTH BACK IN THE SOCKET OR IN MILK
If you are unable to place the tooth back into the socket then put the tooth either into a glass of milk or hold it in your mouth between your cheek and side teeth. Take care not to swallow your tooth, therefore when a child has lost an adult tooth it may
be better for the tooth to be placed in a glass or container of milk. Do not store the tooth in water.
5. CONTACT YOUR DENTIST IMMEDIATELY
You need to contact your dentist immediately for emergency dental treatment. If the tooth has been stored correctly and not allowed to go dry for more than 60 minutes there is a greater chance of saving the tooth and your dentist will try to re-implant it. You will need antibiotics and if the tooth has been in contact with soil, and your tetanus cover would need to be checked. A re-implanted tooth will require careful monitoring and you will need regular visits with your dentist afterwards. The tooth may need further treatment such as a root filling. Sometimes after a blow to the mouth a tooth may not be fully knocked out but have moved from its normal position (further up, down, or sideways). The surrounding part of your mouth may be damaged, or the soft gum could be bleeding. With ALL of these cases seek immediate emergency dental advice and treatment. Reference: Dentaltraumaguide.org

MORPETH FAIR 2018
WELCOME! W
elcome To The 2018 Morpeth Annual Fair Day, Organised By The Morpeth & District Chamber Of Trade.
Morpeth Fair Day has taken place every June since the 1980s. We are always happy and proud to see visitors from all over the North East and beyond thronging the streets of our town and enjoying themselves. There is plenty to see and do. The centre of activity is the main stage where a number of acts and events will take place – a fun run, brass bands, jugglers, karate exhibitions and much, much more, with John & Mick (Morpeth’s answer to Ant & Dec) as ever, the masters of ceremonies. Turner’s Funfair with its many rides is located in New Market and an extensive Food Court and dining area, with food for all tastes, is on Oldgate. There will also be a Dog Show on High Stanners and you may well see participants in an Orienteering competition navigating their way through the town. For many though, the highlight of the day is the parade of vintage cars and motor bikes that travel down Bridge Street, along Oldgate and park up on High Stanners for all to go and see. If you have any problems or questions during your visit to Fair Day, please do not hesitate to ask one of our many stewards for assistance. Morpeth is a lovely market town and we want you to enjoy it and come again and again, not just on Fair Day but also to enjoy the social and shopping aspects of the town as well as its history. Have a great day!

MORPETH FAIR 2018
T
THE History of Morpeth Fair
he first fair day in Morpeth was held approximately 35/36 years ago (there is a slight debate as to the exact year), and the original venue was Morpeth Rugby Club. The fair was made up of a street of stalls totalling approximately 25, combining a range of charities, businesses and organisations.
Following the success of the first fair day, the following year Stan Robson had the idea of expanding the fair and relocating to Bridge Street. Since the move the fair has grown in size year on year, and is now one of the key dates in the Northumberland calendar. The reasons behind the concept of the Fair Day are three fold: firstly to raise money, with £1000 being the original target for the Christmas lights and decorations. At the time Castle Morpeth Borough Council organised and paid for the Christmas lights, but these had reduced over the years and the Chamber wanted to put on a more fitting festive display in the town centre (the Christmas lights were originally built and directed by Chamber members, but legislation dictated that it had to be handed over to the local council). The £1000 was raised through selling the stalls and collection buckets. The second reason for Fair Day was to advertise the town and to try and bring people in to Morpeth from outside the area. Putting on a successful Fair Day, the team hoped, would attract visitors to return on a more regular basis. Thirdly, and most importantly, Fair Day was a way for the traders to say thank-you to the residents of Morpeth for
their custom over the years. These three reasons are still the main objectives of the Chamber to this day. The fun fair in a smaller version came to the town many years ago but, by starting to work with Keith Turners (Turners Fun Fair), they have formed an excellent working relationship which has increased the size of the fun fair dramatically. The whole fair has increased from 20 or 30 stalls, to the fair it is today, covering the whole of Bridge Street, Oldgate and with major attractions down on the Stanners. One of the flagship events of the day is the main parade organised by Malcolm Stewart, which has increased over the years, from a handful of vehicles, to dozens of bikes and vintage cars. Some of the other events seen over the years have included World Championship Cumberland Wrestling, Tug of War, Bungee Jumps and Helicopter Rides. In previous years, behind Rutherford’s Department store where the private car park is located, you would find a stage where rock bands perform all day. Now the main stage at the top of Bridge Street is where most of the entertainment is performed, and is still the main focal point to this day. Over the years Morpeth Fair Day has raised over £150,000, which has all gone back into Morpeth through Christmas lights and the festive displays, Britain in Bloom, fighting for free parking as well as fighting off out of town retail developers and countless other projects and promotional events.

FAIR DAY PARADE
A BIG HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY AND A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SEE CLASSIC CARS AND BIKES - by Norman Rickard - Parade coordinator
O
ver the thirty years or so of Morpeth Fair Day, the Parade has changed markedly. In the early years the Parade consisted mainly of Floats of varying kinds and just a few cars and motor bikes. As health and safety rules became tighter, worries about people falling from the floats and projectiles (like sweets) thrown from them, heralded the current format of cars, bikes and other vehicles. One thing that has not changed is that the Parade has always been about fun. People line the route to see and cheer the Parade all the way from the Mafeking roundabout in the south of the town by the rail station, through Morpeth High St (Bridge street) and beyond the clock tower to High Stanners. The parade will be headed by a Vauxhall Victor owned and driven by Mr Bill Wilson. This car, though common in the 1970s, is rarely seen today and is our Mayoral car. The Mayor escort, will be picked up at the Chantry. The types of vehicles in the Parade is different each year but you can rely on a wide variation. There are rare cars from the 1930s to the 1980s, built in Britain when car manufacturing was a major UK industry. Lookout for Triumphs, original Minis, Jaguars and many more including some fun cars like a Robin Reliant which recreates Dell Boy’s (from Only Fools and Horses) iconic transport. Also, this year as last, we are pleased to have some ex-forces vehicles in the Parade. I believe one might have a water canon but there is strict instruction for this not to be fired!
34
The vehicle owners have, most often, spent many months restoring their vehicles and continue to spend time keeping them roadworthy. They are a credit to their owners and we are delighted they have chosen to show them off on our Fair Day. No discussion about the Parade vehicles would be complete without mentioning the motorbikes. This huge column of vehicular power headed by the “Blood bikes” with their lights flashing will be able to be seen leading the other vehicles as the Parade winds its way through the town. The Parade will start from Morpeth rail station at about 1145am and the vehicles will be on display at High Stanners from around 1230pm. If you can stop them gossiping (because they love to chat to each other) the owners are often proud to talk about their vehicles and their restoration. All-in-all these vehicles, great assets to their owners, will surprise and delight both on Parade and on display. Well worth a view and we look forward to seeing you there.

HISTORY OF THE CHAMBER OF TRADE MORPETH & DISTRICT CHAMBER OF TRADE HAVING BEEN DOING SOME DIGGING AND HAVE DISCOVERED SOME FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THEIR HISTORY...
U
ntil recently we believed that the Chamber of Trade had been in existence since the 1950s. However, after some detailed research we have found that the Chamber (then known as the Chamber of Commerce) was alive and well way back in 1868. So 2018 sees us celebrate our 150th anniversary. The organisation has changed its name a few times in its 150 years. In 1903 it became the Morpeth Tradesmen’s Association. This lasted until 1943 when the then Chairman, Malcolm Wood, became despondent at the apathy of local traders in responding to the threat of the German Luftwaffe, despite having established a mutual aid scheme to provide aid to traders whose property was damaged by enemy action. In the hope that it might appeal more to traders, the Association changed its name back to the Morpeth Chamber of Commerce. Since the 1960’s it has been largely known as the Morpeth Chamber of Trade. Many of the issues dealt with by the Chamber over the years continue to come back. For example, in 1906 there was an angry response to the “foolish proposal” of not permitting horses and carts to stand in Bridge Street for unloading as they were continually being moved on by the police. In 1949, there was a plea to remove parking charges
as only the Terrace car park was free at the time. There was outcry when it was claimed that car were being forced off the main street by police as the proposed bypass wasn’t likely to happen for a number of years. Sounds familiar doesn’t it. In the late 1960s, the Chamber launched “The Morpeth Rant” a free publication for the people of the town. This carried news, in particular news relating to businesses and the development of the town and much more besides. At that time, the town’s Christmas Lights were handmade by members of the Chamber of Trade. Probably something that would scare the pants off Health & Safety experts in the modern era. It was very labour intensive and becoming more and more expensive. Thus, Fair Day was created to provide funds for the Christmas Lights. Whilst we have been researching and enjoying our history, the Chamber of Trade is continuing to keep a steady eye on the future. We will continue to lobby on behalf of traders and town centre users, for example, for better car parking facilities and we are also looking to introduce some new events to the town over the next two years.

VOLUNTEERS WITH RED-GREEN COLOUR BLINDNESS WANTED TO HELP WITH STUDY
R
esearchers at Newcastle University’s colour vision lab are currently running a study to investigate the effects of one brand of commercially available glasses which claim to aid the colour blind. Volunteers are required with all kinds of red-green colour blindness to help them with the investigation. Colour-correcting glasses with particular filters are available commercially to enhance some colours. In the media colour-blind individuals often claim that such glasses have made a great difference to the quality of their lives. The study is investigating these claims by looking at the individual differences in performance on standard tests of colour discrimination when wearing these glasses. Volunteers will be asked to carry out a small number of simple colour vision tests, and will also be asked to read coloured digits as well as sorting coloured chips into order both with and without the glasses. There will be a 30-min time period for your eyes to get used to the glasses. During this time you will be asked to complete two very basic personality questionnaires which are used as 38
simple control measures; there might be factors other than colour vision that influence performance on the tests. The study should take no longer than 75-90 minutes. You are required to make your own way to the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University in Newcastle city centre. Travel costs wont be reimbursed but you will be given the chance to win one of several Love2Shop vouchers. The findings of the study will provide a scientific evaluation of the actual effectiveness of the glasses for different types of colour blindness. For instance it is not known whether individuals with milder forms of colour blindness might benefit more. Since the glasses are very expensive the findings will guide potential buyers. Participants will be able to try the glasses and decide for themselves if they’re worth purchasing. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Cat Pattie via email c.e.pattie1@ncl.ac.uk For information and support in colour blindness please see www.colourblindawareness.org.
WHAT IS COLOUR BLINDNESS? Colour blindness (colour vision deficiency, or CVD) affects approximately 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women in the world. In Britain this means that there are approximately 2.7 million colour blind people (about 4.5% of the entire population), most of whom are male. Most colour blind people are able to see things as clearly as other people but they are unable to fully ‘see’ red, green or blue light. There are different types of colour blindness and there are extremely rare cases where people are unable to see any colour at all. The most common form of colour blindness is known as red/ green colour blindness and most colour blind people suffer from this. Although known as red/green colour blindness this does not mean sufferers mix up red and green, it means they mix up all colours which have some red or green as part of the whole colour. For example, a red/green colour blind person will confuse a blue and a purple because they can’t ‘see’ the red element of the colour purple. See the example of pink, purple and blue pen cases below to understand this effect.

USING YOUR BRAIN, FOR A CHANGE I’M ANDREW FLOUNDERS AND I WORK WITH PEOPLE’S BRAINS.
I
use hypnosis and other powerful techniques to do Brain-Based Rapid Therapy. In particular I work with that part of the brain that many scientists call the ‘Reptile Brain’. It’s
old (in evolutionary terms), it’s simplistic but it’s very much in charge a lot of the time. It’s your fear centre, your ‘fight’, ‘flight’, ‘freeze’ response. It creates those feelings of stress, anxiety, panic, worry. It can even be responsible for cravings, comfort eating and low mood. It’s in charge because it processes everything first. Information about your environment goes through it first – in fact it is responding to stimulus and generating behaviours a full half second before we are consciously aware of it. And that’s the equivalent to 50 metres of brain when travelling at the speed of neurones. That’s why our cravings, anxiety, panic and habitual responses and behaviours ‘feel’ so out of control. And it doesn’t respond to reasoning, logic or rational persuasion. It’s a learning machine and it’s been adapting and learning since you were born responding to your thoughts and environment according to what it’s learned from your lifetime of experiences. We need our Reptile Brain for survival but it just hasn’t adapted well to our modern lives and the often intangible but significant stresses we are under every day – money, relationships, work, performance, social media etc. And as humans, once we've learned a negative association or experienced trauma (created emotional
ANDREW FLOUNDERS
memories) we IMAGINE things, we tell ourselves things, we 'what if'. In more serious cases we have intrusive thoughts and memories and our world shrinks as we avoid any threat, real or imagined (the brain makes no distinction). I have clients who were virtually housebound as a result of IBS and the fear of 'what might happen' when they left the safety of their home. Or we eat excessively, smoke or take other drugs. But it doesn’t have to be that way You see, the same biological processes that are used to create those responses can be used to undo them. Using the right techniques and targeting the reptile brain you can create temporary plasticity in those strong neuronal pathways and synaptic links that are creating the problem, and create new, desired responses instead. Often quite quickly. Imagine that! The neuro-science behind it is Memory Reconsolidation and the basic structure behind most of my therapies uses these principals. I work with many issues and have seen people change their lives time and time again. So don’t just imagine what it would be like. Do something about it. I look forward to your call…. GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.
Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.
Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 50
All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. Call Crichton Wills Trusts & Probate on 01670 514772 and speak to a specialist adviser today who will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have and offers a free no obligation appointment in the comfort of your own home.

‘STRIKING’ NEW EXHIBITIONS AT SEGEDUNUM ROMAN FORT SEGEDUNUM HAS LONG HAD A REPUTATION FOR PRESENTING TOP-CLASS EXHIBITIONS HERE IN WALLSEND AND THE 2018 PROGRAMME PROMISES TO UPHOLD THAT STATUS.
T
he current exhibition Striking the Emperor showcases Roman coins found on the site, but also provides an experience that brings visitors face to face with a real rogues’ gallery of emperors. Roman soldiers were
well-paid and forts were a hive of commercial activity, with coins exchanged for goods and services in the surrounding settlement, and soldiers pay and savings kept locked and guarded in the underground strong room of the Headquarters Building of the fort. Of course, as today, some of those coins got dropped or discarded and lost, only to be found by archaeologists centuries later. The exhibition uses large beautifully-lit images of the coins so that their detail can be clearly seen. Coins were a key medium for circulating the emperor’s public image and associated propaganda around the ancient world, and they present a fascinating story. Striking the Emperor runs until 13 May.

The main summer exhibition will be Saving Face, presenting a glorious array of cheek pieces from Roman helmets. All lent by a private collector, and not seen publically together before, this is a unique and exciting opportunity. The displays will explore the evolution and range of styles, designs and symbolism, of this crucial functional element of the iconic Roman helmet. Geoff Woodward, Museum Manager said, ‘With many of the cheek pieces belonging to cavalry helmets it marks an excellent follow-up to last years’ hugely successful Hadrian’s Cavalry exhibition. Together with the wider museum offer it should attract a large audience to the World Heritage Site this year.’ Saving Face runs from 26 May to 21 September. BEDLINGTON TOWN CENTRE SCHEME MOVES TO NEXT STAGE
P
lans to reinvigorate Bedlington town centre are moving to the next stage following funds being released by the board of Northumberland County Council's regeneration company for a multi-million pound redevelopment.
The scheme when completed will include a new store for a well-known food retailer, additional retail units, car parking and a number of new apartments which aim to transform the town centre economy. It is projected that up to 200 jobs could be created by the scheme once completed. In total the next stage of the works are expected to cost just under ÂŁ6.5m with other funds previously having been agreed for land acquisition and other preparatory works. The regeneration company is already in the process of discharging planning conditions for the scheme and tenders from contractors for the construction are due back within weeks. Subject to agreeing contracts, construction work will start later this summer. Chairman Cllr Richard Wearmouth said: "The new council administration said from the outset that doing right by the residents of Bedlington was a key goal for us. 54
"These proposals have the potential to be truly transformational for the town, giving a boost to the high street by pulling in additional footfall and generating new jobs for local residents. I am hugely looking forward to the start of work on the ground later in the summer." The three independent Bedlington county councillors, Malcolm Robinson, Bill Crosby and Russ Wallace issued a joint statement, saying: "This is very

welcome news for Bedlington and something which collectively we have been working towards ever since our election last year. "Bedlington has been Northumberland's forgotten town for far too long and this project represents an important part making sure our town thrives for generations to come. We are delighted at this news and confident that residents will now give the development their full support."

WITH BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL
A
s the days grow longer and warmer and we dare to throw open the windows and doors to welcome in the fresh air, many people’s thoughts will turn to spring cleaning.
Helen Ross and her Bright & Beautiful team keep the homes of North Tyneside clean and sparkling all year round but did you know that cleaning our houses at this time of year has a rich and varied history? The Chinese have an ancient tradition of cleaning their homes ahead of the new year, which occurs just shortly after the Western new year. They sweep the floors to get rid of any bad luck or misfortune that may have accumulated during the previous year. As well as having its origins in history, spring cleaning also has a lot to do with biology. In the winter, the shorter days mean we are exposed to less sunlight and this reduced exposure to light produces melatonin in the body, the hormone that produces sleepiness. When the days start getting longer and

lighter we produce less melatonin and feel more energetic. Helen, who runs the award winning Bright & Beautiful domestic housekeeping service in North Tyneside, looks after homes across the area, delivering the highest standards of cleaning, tidying and laundry. Helen says: “At this time of year we want to be able to enjoy our free time and make the most of the warmer weather – not be ironing, washing windows or mopping floors all weekend. Coming home to a clean and fresh smelling home, with the washing done and put away by our professional trained housekeepers, well it’s enough to put a spring into anyone’s step!”
