EXPANSION TO LOCAL INDEPENDENT CINEMA MEANS EVEN MORE CHOICE! Right in the heart of Whitley Bay, the Jam Jar Cinema offers the best in local, friendly, affordable, inclusive and diverse cinema, showing a good range of new releases and old classics. Following their expansion in 2019, Jam Jar Cinema now boasts three screens, two bar areas and a lift that makes it accessible for all. While the bigger, multiplex cinemas concentrate on their screens, seats and sound, Jam Jar take these high standards as a given. Instead they prefer to focus their highly trained staff, maintaining excellent customer service and ensuring complete accessibility for all. They believe a trip to the cinema is unique. It's a delight, a treat and a pleasure - nothing else can beat it for sheer escapism and sense of wonder. It can transport you from the daily chores and routine to a different realm, place, time or even galaxy. The name Jam Jar Cinema is a nod to historic times, where you used to be able to get into the cinema at a discounted rate, or for free, on production of a Jam Jar. 10

This originated in North Tyneside and continued until the 1970’s when the value of glass dropped. By this time it had spread to cinemas all over the country, typically in areas of heavy industry: Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Glasgow; where it was known as J’eely Jar Cinema. But it started here in North Tyneside, so what better name for a community cinema than ... Jam Jar Cinema! New releases being screened at Jam Jar this month include The Addams Family 2, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Dune and No Time To Die - the long awaited Bond film. And all of this is available at the centre of Whitley Bay! The Jam Jar Cinema means no transport headaches, no over-priced food and a relaxed, cosy, inviting bar to unwind in. They offer a cosy hug rather than a corporate handshake. Jam jar always have friendly faces
to welcome you - not a soulless machine on the wall. Finally, just like you, Jam Jar staff are moviefanatics - they eat, drink, think film. The team can't wait to see the latest flick and they love choosing the best of what's to come for our community to enjoy. Jam Jar are also doing everything they can to ensure that you are welcomed to a safe, socially distanced and enjoyable cinema experience. If you have any specific questions then you can contact them at info@ jamjarcinema.com, but they do have a dedicated Covid page on their website, with a Covid-19 FAQ's section, which you can check out first, just in case they've already answered your question. ▪ Jam Jar Cinema, 18-24 Park Avenue, Whitley Bay NE26 1DG www.jamjarcinema.com

Discover the Benefits of Reflexology LIFE Holisitc Therapies are offering a 25% discount on Relexology treatments throughout October to help raise awareness about some of the health and wellbeing benefits of this popular therapy. With its roots dating back more than four millennia, reflexology is based on the principle that special ‘reflex’ points found on the soles, tops and sides of the feet correspond to different areas of the body. In this way, the feet can be seen as a ‘map’ of the whole body. While the feet are the most common part of the body treated during a reflexology treatment, reflex points can also be found on the hands, ears and face. By applying specialised massage techniques to the reflex points, the aim of a reflexology treatment is to help restore balance to the body naturally and improve general wellbeing. As well as helping to aid relaxation and improve sleep, a survey of FHT reflexologists found that 71% of clients regularly use reflexology to support them
with long-term health conditions including stress and anxiety, depression, joint and mobility issues, and pain. LIFE Holistic Therapies offer a sacred space where you can relax and enjoy powerful, healing massage therapies. With over 17 years experience, it is ‘the’ place to look for all your specialised alternative therapy needs, providing first-class massage treatments including: Reflexology, Aromatherapy, Energy Work, and Indian Head Massage, helping relieve stress related conditions such as back pain, fatigue, muscular aches and pains, problems with sleep, headaches, mood disorders, joint mobility and flexibility, digestive issues and more! ▪ To save 25% on a reflexology treatment during October contact: LIFE Holistic Therapies, Tel: 07703 330662 www.lifeholistictherapies.co.uk Social media: @lifeholistictherapies

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS BOOST FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Not in education or employment, but looking for your next challenge? Northumberland County Council, in partnership with Newcastle United Foundation, might have just what you are looking for.
If you are aged 16-25 years and not currently in education or employment you could set yourself on the right track through an employability programme. The programme will aid you in gaining the skills you need to develop your career. Councillor Guy Renner-Thompson, cabinet member with responsibility for children and young people, said: “This is a great opportunity for those young people looking to get into work.“Learning key skills through team building can help you go a long way and set you on the right career path for you. We, as a council are committed to opening up opportunities such as this within our communities, and I strongly urge you to take part if you can.” During October, Newcastle United Foundation will be running a series of ‘Taster Days’ at Hirst park, Ashington ahead of the week-long programme in November. The Leadership through football course will provide an engaging introduction to leadership and developing key leadership skills through football. Practical football activities will be used to develop football leaders and wider, transferable leadership skills such as communication, planning and adaptability. This, alongside a mix of group workshops and peer support 14

will provide the basis for participants to achieve an award in Sports Leadership. Participants will also gain an accredited Emergency First Aid qualification. Both the award and qualification will be delivered by Newcastle United Foundation. Daniel Hancock, Senior Employability Coordinator at Newcastle United Foundation, said: “We are privileged to be able to offer this programme in Northumberland. We believe everyone aged 16 to 25 should be able to have access to the same opportunities to open up their employability skills. You don’t have to be into football to benefit either. There is something for everyone to gain from this. I encourage anyone who is thinking about what they want to do with their future to pop along to one of the taster days and speak with the team.” Taster days, including a meet and greet with Newcastle United Foundation staff will be held Wednesday 20 & 27 October, between 1pm and 3pm at Hirst Park Pavilion, Ashington. The week-long programme takes place from Monday 1 November and will include a leadership workshop, practical football engagement, Sports Leadership Award, Emergency First Aid qualification, team building and peer support and an introduction to long term support with Newcastle Football Foundation – all of which will aid job seekers in improving their confidence, leadership and practical development. This course will also provide an introduction to wider and more long-term employability and careers support through Newcastle United Foundations NE1 Works programme, to help connect participants with job opportunities and mentoring. “A huge thanks also goes to those who fund programmes such as these. Funding for this programme has been made available through North of Tyne Combined Authority, Postcode Lottery and Youth Futures Foundation” added Councillor Guy RennerThompson. ▪ For more details on the taster days or course email

ALTERNATIVE TO DOG OWNERSHIP COULD AID A HEALTHY RETIREMENT Looking to stay fit and active in retirement? The solution could have four paws and a waggy tail! With scientific studies showing that the company of a dog can reduce stress and increase physical activity and social interaction, there’s a lot to be said for spending time with a canine. However, dog ownership is a huge long-term commitment, both emotionally and financially. With the average lifespan of a dog being approximately twelve years, many people are discouraged from taking on such a responsibility. Barking Mad Northumberland offers a part-time alternative to dog ownership, where you can experience all the benefits without the full-time responsibility. ‘Host families’ become temporary companions for dogs whose owners are on holiday. Below, we look at the benefits they can experience:
GET FIT WITH FIDO
Dogs are great personal trainers, encouraging us to exercise and get out more. There is no greater motivator than a dog who’s eager to go for a walk – it’s impossible to resist those puppydog eyes! Research from St. Andrews University showed that dog owners were 12% more physically active than people who did not own a dog.
A HEALTHIER LIFE WITH A DOG
As well as helping lower blood pressure by encouraging us to exercise more, dogs can also help in another way and it’s all down to science! A release of the hormone oxytocin is triggered when you stroke a dog, particularly if you look into their eyes. This surge of oxytocin can lower blood pressure, ward off depression and boost immunity. A Swedish study of 3.4 million people also makes the claim: “In a nationwide population-based study with 12 years of follow-up, we show that dog ownership is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in single households.”
HOUNDS CAN MAKE YOU HAPPIER
Patting, stroking and walking dogs can help people to feel more relaxed and less anxious. This makes a huge difference to emotional and physical well-being. Dogs also have a huge capacity for unconditional love which can’t fail to make you feel happier! No matter how bad your day has been, a dog will always greet you with a waggy tail.
CARING FOR CANINES CAN EASE SOCIAL ISOLATION
Dogs can be a real catalyst for social relationships in neighbourhood settings. When you’re walking a dog, it really does break the ice with fellow dog carers/owners, as well as getting you out of the house in the first place. Barking Mad host families also benefit from joining a local community of dog loving individuals, with regular events such as group walks and meals out. Retired Financial Adviser, Helen, and retired Engineer/Gas Fitter, Steve, have hosted for Barking Mad since 2015, they said: “Being holiday hosts with Barking Mad gives us all the pleasure of having a dog with none of the cost, worries or being tied to home. It
enriches our lives. We also feel that as we get older, we don’t want to leave a dog that might have to be placed in a rescue centre if we were no longer fit to look after it. It’s amazing how much pleasure you can get from these four-legged bundles of fun! Each dog is different, so be patient and you’ll soon learn their likes and dislikes. Dog sitting is also a great way to meet likeminded people who walk their dogs.”
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Barbara Frater & Caroline Bradshaw of Barking Mad Northumberland explain, “Our fabulous doggy holiday hosts are generally active retired people or home workers, who enjoy having a dog to stay occasionally. We carefully match each dog to the host’s environment and circumstances to make it a great experience for everyone. Friendly dogs arrive to stay for a weekend, a week or two, with everything they need, such as food, bedding and toys, all provided. Transport, insurance and administration are taken care of by ourselves. We are on call 24/7 and provide full support and guidance. If you have a secure outside space, plenty of time to spare (when it’s convenient for you) and are a real dog lover, we’d love to hear from you.”
If you would like to find out more about becoming a Barking Mad host, you can call Barbara or Caroline on 01665 575981, email northumberland@barkingmad.uk.com or visit www.barkingmad.uk.com/become-a-dog-sitter 16

More Multi-Million Pound Investment Coming to Northumberland

M
ore multi-million pound investment is coming to the county after JDR Cable Systems (JDR), the global subsea cable and umbilical supplier and servicer, announced its plans to open a new state-of-the-art subsea cable manufacturing facility in Cambois. The news has been welcomed by Northumberland County Council, Advance Northumberland and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership which have worked tirelessly to support the project. JDR has confirmed its intention to go ahead with the project, subject to final agreements, with construction expected to begin in 2022 ahead of a 2024 opening, creating 170 high-quality local jobs on completion and safeguarding 270 jobs at JDR’s existing facilities. The initial project investment is estimated at £130m, which will be part funded by a grant from the BEIS Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Support (OWMIS) scheme. JDR and TFK plans to raise the remaining funding with support expected from financial institutions and UK Export Finance. The new facility is the first stage of JDR’s plans to expand its product portfolio to support the growing global renewable energy market, adding high voltage export and long length array cables to its existing capacity and product capabilities. Further stages of the development could result in over 400 staff working at the site, with supplied products complementing JDR’s existing capacity provided by the company’s Hartlepool and Littleport UK manufacturing centers. Tomasz Nowak, Chief Executive Officer at JDR, said: “As the energy transition gathers pace and the UK’s offshore wind sector continues to thrive, turbines are growing taller and farther from shore, calling for higher voltage subsea cables. We’re delighted to build on our legacy as a leading provider of subsea cables to the offshore energy sector by investing in this new facility.
We’re also delighted to continue our investment in the North East of England, and in bringing new jobs to Cambois, Blyth and Northumberland. Our proposed facility is strategically located to capitalise on the rapidly growing and largest offshore renewable energy market in Europe.” Northumberland County Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: “This latest investment in Northumberland is great news and another example of the area’s ever-growing reputation as a centre for renewable energy. With another 170 high quality local jobs in the pipeline we will look forward to working with the company to make this another county success story.” Tony Quinn, Chair of Energi Coast – the North East England’s Offshore Wind Supply Chain Cluster, adds: “We’re delighted that JDR has selected Cambois, near Blyth, for such a strategically important investment. It will make a significant contribution toward the development of an offshore wind industrial cluster in the North East, strengthening an already well established supply chain and creating hundreds of high value jobs.” As the UK prepares to host COP26 in November, the project is an example of the country’s commitment to its net-zero vision. At the same time, the facility fits with the government’s ‘levelling-up’
agenda in the North East of England, as well as its ‘Build Back Better’ ambition in the wake of COVID-19, helping to deliver on a number of strategic national priorities. The 69,000 sqm facility will occupy the site of the former coal-fired power station, continuing Northumberland’s emergence as a hub for renewable energy engineering and industry. Helen Golightly, Chief Executive at the North East LEP, which oversees the region’s 21 Enterprise Zones, said: “It’s excellent news that JDR Cable Systems has chosen the NEP1 Enterprise Zone site as the location for its new facility. Developing manufacturing capacity and supporting the creation of jobs in the offshore and subsea sector in the region is a strategic priority for the North East LEP. “As such, we have invested over £21m to support Advance Northumberland and Northumberland County Council in their efforts to remediate the site, including £2.25m from the Government’s Getting Building Fund and £4.4m from the Local Growth Fund. This investment has led to the creation of one of the UK’s leading deep-water offshore energy bases – attracting investors, securing high quality new jobs and reinforcing the region’s reputation as a hub for renewable energy.”

FANCY A BREAK? Right now we all need something to look forward to, and a UK coach break could be just the ticket! Local coach tourism experts Graham Wright and John Hindhaugh have started their own coach tour company and are taking bookings now. Graham explains more...
John and I have worked in the coach tourism industry as drivers for many years, the last few spent as tour drivers for the same local North East coach holiday company, until the Global pandemic had a catastrophic effect on our industry, with many companies going out of business. Over the years, on our numerous tours both abroad and in the UK, we have built up a fantastic relationship with many of our passengers, and are lucky to call many of them friends. They really appreciated our experience and knowledge of the places we visited, to the extent that a lot of passengers started asking who the driver would be before they actually booked a tour with the company. It was during a conversation with one of our friends that the question was asked about starting our own company doing our own holidays, so here we are. We have put all our years’ experience and knowledge to good use while planning our exclusive tours. All the tours are exceptional value for money, and we only select the best-established quality hotels, that are generally either known to us, or we have previously used before. The specific day trips on each tour are also carefully created, all based on our knowledge as well as any relevant previous customer feedback and suggestions to ensure they are always enjoyed. The trips do not leave the hotel too early, or return too late, so as to allow 20

everyone to make full use of the facilities of the chosen hotel. Guaranteed free time as well as entertainment are also key factors that we take into account to try and make a tour as pleasurable an experience possible. In such a short space of time, from the initial concept, we have managed to make massive progress. During this current difficult time we all need something to look forward to, and we currently have a wide range of fantastic tours in Great Britain. Our advert on the opposite page shows you what’s on offer, with more to follow! You can rest assured that you can book with confidence with us. We have been granted a COVID-19 Industry Standard Certificate which shows government and industry COVID-19 guidelines are followed. Plus, if your tour is cancelled due to the COVID restrictions, you will receive a full refund. We look forward to welcoming you aboard! ■ United Group Travel Ltd

Dealing with Dental Trauma
Joanne Duggan, Principal Dental Surgeon at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice offers some first aid tips on dealing with a broken or knocked out tooth
Kids get into all sorts of bumps and scrapes. Whether it’s falling off their bike or tripping on their roller skates. However, when your child knocks a tooth out, it can sometimes be traumatic My son had an accident when playing outside in the summer; his front tooth was hit with a tennis racket and it broke in half. As a dentist I obviously knew what to do, but would you know what to do if you or a loved one was faced with a dental emergency?
WHAT TO DO IF A TOOTH IS KNOCKED OUT
If a baby tooth is knocked out we would normally leave the tooth out, accept the gap, and wait for the adult tooth to erupt. However sometimes when an infant or child has knocked their mouth there can be quite a lot of bleeding. Injuries of the mouth often
24
|
ABC MAGAZINES
appear far worse as the soft gums can be damaged and bleed. Firstly try to stop the bleeding by applying a handkerchief over the area with light pressure. Then contact your dentist for an emergency appointment to properly assess and provide appropriate treatment. We want the injured child to receive the right care and follow-up appointments with the dentist may also be necessary. When an adult tooth is knocked out the advice is different and it should be dealt with as a real dental emergency as we want to try to save the tooth. The sooner you get help from your dentist the greater the chance of saving it. Follow the important first aid tips on the opposite page, if you are faced with this very unfortunate situation.
FIRST AID FOR TEETH FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE STEPS IF YOU’RE FACED WITH A BROKEN OR KNOCKED OUT TOOTH
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TOOTH WAS BROKEN OR FRACTURED IN AN ACCIDENT
If an accident means your adult tooth has broken, keep the piece of tooth if you have it and contact your dentist for emergency treatment. Sometimes if the fragment of tooth is available, it can be bonded back into position on your tooth. Alternatively your dentist will use white resin filling material to build the tooth back to its original shape. Any tooth that has been broken in an accident will need to be assessed by a dentist and will usually need follow up visits to monitor the health of the tooth. If it is a baby tooth that has broken the child will need to see a dentist for an emergency assessment. The broken piece of tooth will not normally be used as with an adult one. Realistically the treatment available will largely depend on the child’s age, stage of development and ability to cope with dental treatment.
1
STAY CALM
By following the steps below, you can hopefully limit the damage and improve the prospect of saving the tooth.
2 3
Hopefully you will never need to use the advice above, but however well we try to protect our loved ones, accidents will always happen. After any accident that involves your teeth or mouth, it is always best to seek immediate dental advice.
If you need help dealing with a dental trauma please contact us at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice on 01670 828402. We are located at 30 Front Street East, Bedlington, NE22 5AA. ▪ www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk
DO NOT TOUCH THE ROOT
Pick it up by the crown, (the white part you would normally see in your mouth).
RINSE ANY DIRT FROM THE TOOTH
If there is dirt on the tooth then briefly wash it under cold running water for 10 seconds and then reposition it back into the socket and bite down on a handkerchief to keep it in the correct position. If it is a baby tooth that has been knocked out then do not try to re-implant the tooth.
4
PUT THE TOOTH BACK IN THE SOCKET OR IN MILK
If you are unable to place the tooth back into the socket then put the tooth either into a glass of milk or hold it in your mouth between your cheek and side teeth. Take care not to swallow your tooth, therefore when a child has lost an adult tooth it may be better for the tooth to be placed in a glass or container of milk. Do not store the tooth in water.
5 A glass of milk can preserve a knocked out tooth
+
CONTACT YOUR DENTIST IMMEDIATELY
You need to contact your dentist immediately for emergency dental treatment. If the tooth has been stored correctly and not allowed to go dry for more than 60 minutes there is a greater chance of saving the tooth and your dentist will try to re-implant it. You will need antibiotics and if the tooth has been in contact with soil, and your tetanus cover would need to be checked. A re-implanted tooth will require careful monitoring and you will need regular visits with your dentist afterwards. The tooth may need further treatment such as a root filling. Sometimes after a blow to the mouth a tooth may not be fully knocked out but have moved from its normal position (further up, down, or sideways). The surrounding part of your mouth may be damaged, or the soft gum could be bleeding. With ALL of these cases seek immediate emergency dental advice and treatment. BACK ON SONG - BUT LET’S DISPEL THE MYTHS!
If you fancy joining Ashington Male Voice Choir, but you have some reservations, here they answer some misconceptions that you may have. After having to suspend our activities because of COVID, Ashington and District Male Voice Choir are definitely “back on song”. Our Thursday evening rehearsals have resumed at Bomarsund Welfare, and we are actively planning our forthcoming concerts. The choir are always pleased to welcome new members, but we understand that sometimes people might not be too sure what we are all about. Sometimes they might have the wrong ideas about us, so we thought we’d try to set the record straight. Some common misconceptions … “You have to be a really good, top class singer.” WRONG! You don’t have to be like Pavarotti or Russell Watson or even that bloke who flogs car insurance on the tele. (Go compare!). You just need to enjoy a good sing, no matter how good (or bad) you think your voice is. “The choir members are a bit snobbish and stand offish and I wouldn’t fit in”. WRONG!. The blokes in the choir are all “ordinary” folk from all sorts of different backgrounds. Everybody gets on well and enjoys each other’s company, as well as a good laugh. “You have to be able to read music and pass an audition to see how good you are before you can join.” WRONG! You don’t have to be able to read music and there is no audition. We are a community choir open to any men who want to sing. “The choir only sings highbrow, posh classical music and I wouldn’t like it.” WRONG! The choir sings a wide variety of music to fit all tastes. We sing popular songs of all kinds

and genres, from The Beatles to traditional folk songs, from Elvis to modern musicals. “The rehearsals are really strict and boring and if you sing something wrong everybody looks down their nose at you”. WRONG! Rehearsals are quite light hearted and enjoyable. Obviously the idea is to sing the music properly and professionally. Anybody can get it wrong from time to time but nobody gets upset or criticises. After all, that’s what rehearsals are for – so we can put right any mistakes. “It’s just a bunch of blokes getting together for a sing without any real purpose.” WRONG! Not only is singing good for you physically and mentally the socialisation with other people does you good as well. It’s not only good for the members the choir performs at a number of concerts during the year, not only to provide good entertainment, but also to raise funds for local good causes and charities. Every year we select
a charity or worthwhile organisation we can try to help in this way. “It’s not worth turning out and missing an evening watching tele”. WRONG! What can I say? There must be more to life than watching tele every night …… ‘’It would be too expensive. I don’t want to buy a uniform and music’’ WRONG! Uniform and music are provided free. There’s a small weekly subscription after the first six weeks…not much different to buying a tea or cofee. Hopefully the above might have given local men some insight into what the choir is all about and encouraged some to think about joining us. You’ll be very welcome so come on, give it a go! See our advert on page 6 for contact details or visit us on Facebook. ADVANCE NOTICE! Christmas is coming and so is our Christmas Concert on Saturday 11th December Bedlington.. WATCH OUT FOR DETAILS.

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 32

Prep your Garden this Autumn Although temperatures start to dwindle as we edge towards the final quarter of the year, now is the time to get outside and lay the groundwork in your garden, to allow it to spring into bloom in 2022. The expert team from Dobbies, the UK’s leading garden centre retailer, is here to help you along the way. Whether you have a seasoned green thumb or are new to planting, freshly moistened soil, longer evenings and comfortable temperatures mean the autumn garden is packed with opportunity and this should be embraced to maximise a garden’s potential for the year ahead. While spring may be the traditional time for deep-cleaning homes, Dobbies Horticultural Director Marcus Eyles, advises that autumn is the key season for sprucing up gardens. He recommends regular deadheading and cutting back of herbaceous plants and Roses - allowing them to produce some tidy growth, pruning (remember to keep sticks and stems so they can be used as plant supports next year) and continued weeding of perennials. Marcus said; “Autumn is the perfect time to wind down, restore and prepare our gardens for the new year. Spring bulbs, vegetables and leafy crops will welcome your attention throughout the season, as we prepare for winter and anticipate a healthy 2022 spring bloom." “Root systems will find it easier to develop under cooler weather, so now is an excellent time to plant potatoes for your Christmas dinner, or try beetroot and carrots for a hearty Sunday roast. Maintenance is key during the autumnal months, so make use of a quieter time to weed perennial plants and prune shrubs, but most of all, be sure to sit back and take a moment to wonder in the magnificence of the season’s rich colours.” As Marcus highlighted, autumn is not simply for maintenance, with lots of bright plants revelling in the cooler conditions of the season. From fiery 34

reds and oranges of the seasonal foliage to gorgeous greens from the vegetable patch harvest, for fans of colour, autumn can be beautiful. Dogwood and Birch will keep your borders looking suitably seasonal while Acers, Cyclamen, Pansies and Ornamental grasses make for beautiful displays in containers. In preparation for spring blooms, be sure to plant flowering bulbs, so they’ll burst into colour once the weather heats up again. Daffodils, Crocuses and Hyacinths can all be planted in October, but it’s best to wait until November for your Tulips. For planting in the ground, firstly check the planting depth of your bulbs and dig a hole as deep as required. Mix in Bulb Starter and add a layer of grit – this is important if you have very wet or heavy soil as it will prevent the bulbs rotting during the winter. Autumn is a season of change and transition. Peat-free compost is a great way to encourage sustainability in our gardens, and a healthy foundation for budding spring blooms. With a target to be peat-free by the end of 2021, Dobbie’s own brand peat-free compost, which is now available instore, is a sustainable alternative for those hoping to garden without compromising the environment. If food is at the forefront of your thoughts, autumn is an important time for the vegetable patch. Planting in this season gives crops a chance to start their life in warm soil giving them a strong base to establish themselves before winter and makes way for an earlier yield. Broad beans are one of the simplest vegetables to grow in autumn, doing well in most soils and climates. Excellent in risottos, stews or as a
snack, these hardy vegetables have large seeds that are easy to handle and don’t require any specialist equipment. For the best results, sow your seeds in two close rows between October and November. Garlic is another great addition to the autumn garden and will be ready to pick by July if planted now. If your soil is claggy, add grit to the bottom of the planting holes and pick a sundrenched spot. While the list of autumn tasks may feel daunting for gardeners, Dobbies handy check-list of top ten tips below should keep you and your garden on track. 1. Tidy herbaceous plants 2. Continue to do weeding, focusing on perennial plants 3. Plant bulbs ready to burst into colour in spring 4. Plant herbaceous plants 5. Empty pots and plant autumn bedding 6. Start to prune trees and large shrubs 7. Continue to plant leafy crops 8. Prep for Christmas potatoes by planting in August/September 9. Mulch beds with soil enricher, such as Bloomin Amazing 10. Make refuge for wildlife by not over-tidying Dobbies is ‘not your average garden centre’, so remember to visit our website for more information, or pop into store if you require any further advice or guidance, as the expert team are always on hand and happy to help. ▪ Dobbies Garden Centre, Gosforth Park, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne NE3 5EP www.dobbies.com

What’s the deal with Army Cadets? Army Cadets is for young people who are up for adventure, enjoy an adrenalin rush, like working with others, want to challenge themselves and, most importantly, like to have fun.
Who can join
?
Army Cadets is a well kept secret – it’s fantastic, but not many people know about it.
Army Cadets is all-inclusive – you just need to be aged 12 -18.
Will I have to join the Army later?
How does it work?
You aren’t expected to join the Army after being an Army Cadet, it’s simply an organisation for young people who want to live an awesome no-filter lifestyle.
Cadets join a group called a detachment. That’s your Army Cadet crew who you get to know well through your adventures. You bond with each other by taking part in activities and spending time at summer camp and on expeditions.
Done any Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards? That’ll give you a flavour of the expedition element of Army Cadets. In fact, the expedition training and DofE are aligned so you can do your DofE through Army Cadets at a fraction of the price you’d pay anywhere else.
How often would I go? Detachments meet one or two evenings a week and do adventurous training and camps on weekends and during school holidays.
What does it cost? Cadets pay a very small annual subscription for their uniform and access to incredible adventures. Weekends and camps are heavily subsidised; money shouldn’t be a barrier to joining. Read more

ENJOY YOUR CONSERVATORY THIS WINTER
If you’re fed up with your conservatory being freezing cold and unusable during the winter then Thermos Roof explain how they have the answer...
C
onservatories are a fantastic space to enjoy whilst looking out onto your garden, they are bright, spacious and give you a great sense of closeness to the outdoors. However, as most conservatory owners will know, whilst they bring all of those benefits, it is usually short lived and can only be enjoyed for two or three months of the year, the rest of those months being either freezing cold or blisteringly hot. At Thermos Roof, we have been insulating conservatory roofs since 2005 for two main reasons, firstly to increase its insulating performance and secondly to enhance its internal aesthetic appearance. Experience will have shown you that in the winter as soon as you open the door the heat is sucked out of your room into the conservatory and, during the summer, it becomes a dazzling sauna that’s so hot you need a fan to cool you down. FILM REVIEWS GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE Genres: Comedy, Fantasy, Supernatural Age Rating: PG-13 Release date: 19th November In ’Ghostbusters: Afterlife’, two grandchildren of the 1984 original ghostbusters get together to fight against a supernatural phenomenon that returns years after the first movie. The story starts with two siblings and their mother moving into a decaying farmhouse in the tiny Oklahoma city of Summerville, to take over their late grandfather’s failing farm. Following their arrival in town, the family begins to notice and sense odd activities taking place around the city. Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd), Trevor’s teacher, shares his thoughts on how current circumstances link to supernatural events of the 1980s. The family then proceeds to learn about their grandfather’s hidden legacy, and how supernatural powers threaten to take over the world once again. As a result, the children must blow the dust off the Ghostbusters’ equipment and use it to save the world, their friends and their family. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts have agreed to reprise their roles as five of the Ghostbusters original cast from the 1984’s ’Ghostbusters’. At the same time, in a moment that can almost be called a passing of the torch, the movie is directed by Jason Reitman, the son of director Ivan Reitman - who directed both ’Ghostbusters’ (1984) and ’Ghostbusters II’ (1989). Jason has already directed a number of other films as well, including ‘Tully’ (2018), ‘Labor Day’ (2013), and ‘Thank You For Smoking’ (2005), and in this one will also be acting as co-writer for the screenplay along with Gil Keenan and Dan Aykroyd. ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is set for UK release on 19th November.

wife. The mission doesn’t go as planned, but the horseman learns what it takes to be a good man as he crosses Mexico into Texas. Based on a 1975 book with the same title by M. Richard Nash, ‘Cry Macho’ has been announced under several previous projects. Director Brad Furman announced at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival that Arnold Schwarzenegger would play the horseman, but the project was cancelled after Schwarzenegger divorced Maria Shriver. The now 90-year-old Eastwood takes three main roles in this movie - leading actor, director, and producer. The multi-talented star becomes Miko, the horseman, along with several other cast members. They are Dwight Yoakam, Natalia Traven, Horacio Garcia Rojas and Fernanda Urrejola. It is not the first time Eastwood has taken more than one role. The last movie where he both acted and directed was ‘The Mule’ in 2018, playing the role of a horticulturist who turns into a courier for a drug cartel. ‘Cry Macho’ is set to be released in UK theatres on November 12th, 2021.
RON’S GONE WRONG Genres: Animated, Comedy, Family, Science Fiction Age Rating: PG Release date: 15th October
‘Ron’s Gone Wrong’ is the story of Barney, an awkward middle schooler who befriends his digital friend named Ron. Ron is a pod-sized robot that can walk, talk, and function like humans. Being the curious teenager that he is, Barney sees a friend figure in Ron, at least until it malfunctions. Only then he realizes what the meaning of friendship in the digital era truly is. Ron is voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer, a seventeen year old actor who recently made his way to popular child and teenager movies. He has voiced Alberto Scorfano from Pixar’s ‘Luca’ and played Eddie Kaspbrak in the Horror movie ‘It’. On the other hand, the tiny robot is voiced by comedian and actor Zach Galifianakis. Despite being known for his role in an adult comedy ‘The Hangover’ as Alan, he is also a recurring voice actor in animated movies such as Humpty Dumpty in ‘Puss in the Boots’ and Joker in ‘The Lego Batman’. Among the cast members are also Ed Helms, Rob Delaney, Justice Smith, and British actress Olivia Colman. 20th Century Studios partnered with Locksmith animation to make this computer-animated science-fiction comedy. The animation company is based in London, England, and claims to be the only UK animation company with high-end technology. This project will be its first movie. Jean Philippe Vine directed the movie together with Sarah Smith, with a screenplay written by Smith and Peter Baynham.
