THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING IN WOMEN Whether you are 25, 35, or even 85, everyone can benefit from improving their strength! By Sarah Howe

I

ncreased endurance levels, improved stability, a better metabolism and building healthier bones... all of these can be achieved by strength training!

Our metabolism is based on the amount of muscle we have, So as we age & lose muscle we will in effect burn less calories. This is when women can not understand how they are gaining weight and starting to feel “Flabby”. How many of you go back to the good old diet that worked last month…Last year, The diet that you have been on for the last 10years? What actually happens when you diet & lose “weight on the scales” is that you are also losing 4% of your muscle mass which yes you guessed will lower your metabolism once again. Inactive Adults lose muscle mass every year as we age on average 3-8% of muscle mass per decade. By Strength training you can help minimize your muscle loss & increase your metabolism, As you age the percentage of fat will increase on your body if you do not replace the lean muscle that you are losing. Regardless of your age strength training helps preserve and enhance your muscle mass & Participating in a regular strength training program will help burn calories more efficiently. What’s more, when you strength train you get more Calorie – Torching bang for your buck. It keeps your body working long after you stop “The after –burn” the harder you workout the longer the “After burn” will last. So the big question WILL I BULK UP? Many women miss out on the effects of strength training in the fear that they will “Bulk up” and look like Arnold Schwaznegger but this is all a misconception. Due to women having high levels of Oestrogen it makes it

16

difficult to become overly muscular – The effects/ benefits of strength training on women are more for strength, endurance & resulting in a firmer look. The benefits of strength training is a key component to overall health and fitness, and goes alongside a good balance of aerobic and cardio exercise. It also has many more health benefits i.e. reducing the risk of osteoporosis, Diabetes, High BP, bad back & joint pain, Arthritis – the list continues! Routinely strength training will slow down the bone deterioration and helps bones grow stronger which reduces the rick of osteoporosis, Falls, Fractures and breaks. This comes increasingly important as you age to maintain independence. At Curves we offer a safe environment for all women, all ages, shapes & sizes – You will have a coach with you at all times to supervise you and help you reach your goals …. Weather it be to fit into your clothes, to complete a charity challenge, keep up with kids/grandchildren or even just to carry your own shopping bags and reach for the cupboards. Curves is a fitness facility designed for women, it’s a 30minute workout that combines strength Training & Cardio with no lycra or leotards… no Mirrors or Make up just good old results

AUTUMN PROGRESS FOR CHOIR

C

ontinual efforts over the last 12 months are now showing fruit for Ashington & District Male Voice Choir which has attracted several new members whilst also having greater success in its performances at a variety of venues and more ‘first time audiences’. The first concert of the new season is a

first visit to the Bedlington East Community Centre at Bedlington Station during a community festival and a further visit is probable in the New Year. The community choir performs for many charitable and voluntary organisations and is always willing to talk about helping raise funds for worthwhile causes or assisting groups to maintain their efficiency. This is in addition to the choir also adopting its own charity each year. 2017 saw nearly £3000 being added to the County Council’s Civic Head’s Charity, MacMillan Cancer Support for Northumberland and this was through two concerts. On the other hand there were a number of small concerts for local groups who enjoyed an evening’s entertainment. The 2018 choir’s Christmas Concert is also heading to a new venue at St. Cuthbert’s Church in Bedlington. Taking place on Saturday 15th December at 7pm with an

excellent programme of festive pieces mixed with some choral classics and plenty of opportunity for audience participation. The new members have all brought something new to the choir as well as increasing the overall strength but more new members are always welcome. No auditions, no need to read music nor have previous experience, just a willingness to give it a try and that’s why there is a 6 week ‘trial period’ and it will be surprising if you try it, you find it’s not for you. Just pop along to Stakeford & Bomarsund Welfare at 7:00pm on a Thursday evening. Visit www.ashingtonmalevoicechoir.org or their Facebook page for details.

SUNDAY LUNCH

WITH A VIEW

Enjoy the view of the golf course while you dine

Burgham Park Golf Club offers fresh and tasty Sunday lunches with a fantastic view. Richard Wilson headed up the A1 to give them a try...

O

nce in a while it’s nice to go for a drive on a sunny Sunday lunchtime, and let someone else worry about cooking and those dreaded dishes created by a Sunday Lunch. That is exactly what we decided to do, and we chose Burgham Park Golf Club as our destination. Located conveniently just off the A1 (and well signposted) about 10 miles north of Morpeth, Burgham Park is set in beautiful tranquil countryside, a perfect location for a relaxing Sunday Lunch. The clubhouse has a bar and conservatory area on the ground floor, whilst the restaurant is situated on the first floor. The room makes full use of the magnificent views on offer, with floor to ceiling windows allowing dinners the chance to gaze out over the 18th hole and the fields that stretch beyond whilst enjoying their lunch. The room itself is beautifully laid out with a large open fire and a really warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Sunday Lunch menu is kept purposely simple to ensure everything is served fresh. There are three starter options, two choices of main course and three desserts. 20

For our starter we chose the traditional prawn cocktail. Nicely presented and a very pleasing appetiser for the main course. The chef cooks a choice of two different meats every week, rotating the selections, and the offerings when we visited were beef and pork. Both myself and my wife opted for the beef and when it came neither of us were disappointed with our choice! The slices of beef were coated in a delicious thick gravy and accompanied by both roast and mashed potato and a gigantic Yorkshire pudding. Vegetables are served separately, and our helping consisted of turnip, carrots and Brussels sprouts with delicious pancetta. The dish was warm, hearty and tasted very much home cooked in the best traditional sense. The portions are very generous and all in all the meal left us both very satisfied. Stepping outside into the earlyafternoon sun, we pondered as to whether a stroll in the beautifully grounds was in order, but this review wasn’t going to write itself, so we settled for the scenic drive back. If you are looking for a nice

A SORE R SUBJECT

Root canal therapy is a phrase that strikes fear in most of us, but it shouldn’t according to Andrew Ratsey, Dental Surgeon at Bedlingtonshire Dental Practice. Here he discusses the misunderstandings about the procedure.

oot canal therapy is one of the least understood and most feared dental procedures.

When patients are informed they need a root canal they often respond with apprehension and dread. But is this reputation deserved? Are root canals something to fear? The short answer is no. Modern techniques allow for pain free and comfortable procedures. Would you believe me if I said root fillings are the most common treatment patients fall asleep through? In this article I will look to set the record straight about root canal therapy. I will discuss why we do root canal, how we do it and most importantly why it is nothing to fear.

WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?

A root canal is a dental procedure that is used to save a tooth that would otherwise be extracted. The medical term for root canal therapy is Endodontics from the Latin Endo, meaning inside and Dont, meaning tooth. This is fundamentally what we are doing; we are treating the inside of the tooth. Teeth are made up of different layers. The outside is the hard enamel; underneath is the dentine and in the centre of the tooth is the pulp which consists of blood vessels and nerves . The pulp is the area we are interested in when we perform root canal therapy. www.bedlingtonshiredental.co.uk

LEFT: A diagram of a healthy tooth. The pulp is the area a dentist is interested in when they perform root canal therapy.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? To fix the problem the infected pulp needs to be removed and there are two methods of doing this. Your first option is to extract the tooth. Removing the tooth will remove the infected tissue within the tooth, but will mean you have lost a tooth and have a gap which may affect your smile or how well you can eat and chew. Your second option is to save the tooth and involves the removal of all the bacteria and infected pulp from within the tooth, then sealing it back up so no new bacteria can get back in. This is the process known as the root canal filling.

THE PROCEDURE

WHY DO YOU NEED A ROOT CANAL?

The main reason you would need a root canal is because bacteria has got into the pulp. Bacteria can enter the tooth either by a hole made by tooth decay, or by trauma that exposes the pulp. Once the bacteria is inside your tooth it begins to break down the blood vessels and nerves. This can lead to pain as the pulp becomes inflamed and swollen. As the pulp swells the pressure builds up inside the hard tooth. The pain associated with an inflamed pulp is severe and can be constant. The pain may stop you sleeping and even painkillers may not take it away, making you feel thoroughly miserable. Patients when asked to rate this pain often describe it as 10 out of 10. Occasionally bacteria can enter a tooth and not cause any pain. Initially this may mean you are unaware there is anything wrong. However as the bacteria spreads through the root breaking down the nerve, by-products are produced. These by-products are highly toxic and when they start to exit the root, your body tries to create a barrier between the infected tooth and the rest of your body. To achieve this specialist immune cells begin to destroy the bone around the tooth. As the bacteria continues to spread your immune system brings more troops into the area. As the immune cells attack the bacteria they begin to fill the space in the bone with puss and fluid. This is a dental abscess, and whilst not in the same league as the pain associated with the inflamed nerve, it is still sore enough to really spoil your day. 24 24

The first and most important stage of treatment is getting the patient out of pain. The good news is this is really simple. For all their nasty side effects, bacteria are fairly easy to upset. Removing the tooth decay and opening up the space in the centre of the tooth, (the pulp), is enough to alleviate the symptoms in most cases. If the dentist has enough time then the root canal can be completed in one go, but most often the procedure is completed on subsequent visits. First the diseased pulp needs to be fully removed from inside the tooth. This is followed by a thorough rinse with a strong anti-bacterial solution to kill any bacteria left behind. Once the tooth is completely clean on the inside then it is dried, and finally a filling is placed which seals the top of the root down to the tip of the root so that no more bacteria can get back in. The final part of treatment is to restore the top of the tooth, and place either a permanent filling or a crown to completely seal the tooth and root canal system. This will return the tooth back to full function.

IS IT EFFECTIVE?

What many people say when they are told that they need a root canal is that they have heard that they don’t work. This is simply not true. Studies have shown that when root canals are performed to a high standard then the success rate is over 90%. If the tooth can be cleansed of bacteria and no new bacteria introduced during the treatment, then the healing process will begin.

DOES IT HURT?

This is another common misconception about root canal fillings. Modern anaesthetics delivered to the right areas around the infected tooth can successfully numb the tooth and allow pain free treatment. It often takes longer to freeze up than for a standard filling, but it will get there. The reason for this is when the nerve becomes inflamed, the inflammation alters how the anaesthetic works on the tooth, meaning you may need slightly more or different

types of anaesthetic. Once numb you can really just relax as the treatment will be comfortable. Another factor that has improved patient comfort is the creation of super soft metals from which the instruments used to shape the root canals are made. Historically the instruments used in root canal were made from steel that was much stiffer and harder. This created a lot of vibration and pressure which many patients found unpleasant. The new metal alloys allow for instruments that gently and smoothly shape the inside of the tooth, leading to a much more pleasant experience.

SO WHY DOES IT HAVE SUCH A BAD REPUTATION?

There’s no denying that root canal has a reputation that needs repairing. The treatments of previous generations has left a real mark on the general population. One of the issues is lack of positive stories, whilst people will readily

recount stories of bad experiences, few stories are ever heard of the great root filling they had. Root canals can be performed by any dentist, routine cases can be conducted to a very high standard and allow for great healing. Occasionally the root canal system can form unusual shapes that make achieving the high standard to allow healing difficult for a general dentist. At this point the services of a dentist who has trained further in Endodontology can be employed. These dentists use high magnification devices and specific knowledge so that the finest details of the complex root canal system can be easily seen and treated, meaning they are more likely to get a successful outcome. Root canals are not to be worried about or feared. Modern techniques allow for pain free and successful treatments, but if you are unsure the best thing to do is to speak to your dentist. They will be able to reassure you and recommend the best course of treatment for you.

Andrew Ratsey is an enthusiastic Dental Surgeon with a passion for endodontics, (he just loves it!). He has completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Endodontology with merit but was awarded a distinction in his clinical assessments. Andrew is currently working towards his MSc in Endodontics and has just completed his thesis on how the manufacture of endodontic instruments affect their ability to shape the root canal system. This has given him a unique insight into the most appropriate instruments to use in a given situation. Andrew is committed to providing the highest quality of root canal treatment using the latest equipment and techniques. Bedlingtonshire

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare.

Personal Welfare

This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment.

Property and Affairs

This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments. 28 28

All work we undertake is at fixed fees: Single Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney: £300 inclusive of VAT Double Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney (suitable for couples): £420 inclusive of VAT Single Will: £120 inclusive of VAT Mirror Will: £156 inclusive of VAT It is imperative that specialist advice is taken in order to ensure that the power given accurately reflects your wishes. WOOL OR MAN-MADE? WHICH IS THE BEST CARPET FOR YOU?

M

ichael Metcalf Carpets pride themselves on being honest and transparent. With decades of experience within the carpet trade they are able to offer the most reliable advice to accompany their first class service. One of the most frequent questions they are asked by their customers is “which is best, a traditional wool carpet or one manufactured from man-made fibre?” Here is their explanation...

30

A wool carpet keeps its appearance wonderfully

WOOL

Wool is without question the best material for the manufacturing of carpets. It is natural, sustainable, has superb insulating properties, dyes easily, and keeps its appearance wonderfully. For many years it has been recognised that the inclusion of a small proportion of nylon into the wool yarn prior to the manufacturing process gives the wool a stronger property. For this reason it has become standard practice to create the finest carpets with a blend of eighty percent wool and twenty percent nylon, commonly referred to as an 80/20 mix. Quality carpets are generally graded in terms of weight. We find carpets described as 40 ounce, 50 ounce, 60 ounce and so on. This is a description or a general indication of the amount of wool/nylon content in weight per square yard. However, sometimes a 50 oz carpet may be more durable than a 60 oz from a different manufacturer. The reason for this is because the 60 oz may have a longer pile than the 50 oz and therefore more weight, while the 50 oz could have a shorter pile length but may be of a much tighter construction than the 60 oz. We advise our customers to look for and feel for a density in carpets rather than simply relying on weight descriptions. Therefore, we believe it is the density of the pile, or the amount of tufts per square inch (to use an old imperial term) that will deter the breaking or distortion of carpet pile, and help retain the appearance of your new quality carpet. We can supply all of the major reputable and established carpet brands, most of which we have on display in our two showrooms at Morpeth and Bedlington.

POLYPROPELENE

Polypropelene is the next best ideal product for carpet manufacturing, and has in fact several distinct advantages over wool, the first of which is the fact that an equivalent carpet of this construction will be around half of the price as a wool one. The other fantastic quality of polypropelene is that it can be cleaned usually very successfully if and when it is subject to soiling or spillage. Therefore many families with small children and pets prefer this material because certain stains cannot be cleaned so easily from a wool carpet. Interestingly, in recent decades in the UK it has become common practice in many homes to remove ones shoes before walking onto carpets, which is probably the most single factor that we can advise toward prolonging the appearance of your new carpet. Outdoor shoes will carry grit as well as dust and water from outside, so making it a practice to take off your shoes when coming through the front door is a great idea. The cleanability of polypropylene carpets is not a new thing, though at first this fibre was tough and hard to the touch. Then in 2015 the carpet manufacturer Whitestone Weavers introduced the Invictus range of carpet. It was so soft to the touch that it took the industry by storm, and during the next two years or so commanded a great deal of the UK residential carpet market. So successful was this, that long established carpet manufactures scrambled to copy this product, employing laboratory plastics experts to try and find out how a polypropylene fibre could possibly be manufactured in such a soft and silk like format. This really was a great step in carpet manufacturing. Now only a few years on there are several brands available with similar super soft carpet pile. This carpet feels amazing if you walk bare foot in your home and is the number one choice for bedrooms in particular, though is also suitable for sitting rooms and hall stairs and landings. Please come and browse at your leisure in our two high street shops, though please note that the greater selection of polypropylene carpets are on show in our larger, Bedlington premises. service will take place at the Ashington Memorial Garden on Thursday 1 November to recognise Sergeant Hugh Cairns VC and the role of the Ashington Airfield. The ceremony will unveil a commemorative stone for Hugh as part of the national programme marking the 100th anniversary of those who received the Victoria Cross (VC) during World War One. A commemorative stone will also be unveiled to recognise those who served at the Ashington Airfield and the important role it played as part of the Home Defence Stations in the war. Hugh Cairns was born in 1896 and attended Bothal School before his family emigrated to Canada in 1911. With the First World War raging Hugh and his brothers Albert and Henry enlisted in the Canadian Army with Henry being the only one of the three to survive the war. In 1917 Hugh was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty and was then awarded the VC for ‘the most conspicuous bravery before Valenciennes on the 1 November, 1918’. He died on the 2 November from the wounds he received the previous day. The Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust are pleased to honour the Ashington Airfield by also placing a commemorative stone within the Memorial Garden. The Ashington Airfield was to the west of the town and had a cross shaped wood planted to help pilots locate the landing strip with No. 36 Squadron flying from the airstrip during World War One. The service at the Ashington Memorial Garden will be led by the Reverend Michael Hedley and will commence at 11am. The event has been organised by the Ashington Branch of the Royal British Legion, Ashington Town Council and Northumberland County Council. Music will also be provided by the Ashington Colliery Band.

SAYING THANK YOU TO WOMEN OF THE WAR 2018 marks 100 years since the end of the First World War and to commemorate this historic year, The Royal British Legion is leading the nation in saying Thank You to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed and changed our world.

W

hilst most of the soldiers on the frontline were men, The Royal British Legion has produced a very special brooch to say Thank You for the massive contribution made by women in the war, and to those women who continue to be such an integral part of the Armed Forces family today. Women not only played a huge role in directly helping the war effort, from being nurses in field hospitals to working in dangerous munitions factories, but the war also helped change women’s place in society and demonstrated that they were the physical and intellectual equal of men. Edwardian women were expected to be mothers, carers and homemakers. But with men leaving to fight in the war, women had to take on the jobs of those who were serving. From 1914, millions took on jobs traditionally held More than 1.5 million women flooded into these industries and others to replace men away at the front. In 1914 just over 2 million worked in factories and by the end of the war it was nearly 3 million. For the first time, large numbers of women worked in the civil service, 44

business, banks, shops, transport and farming. Many women who had been in solitary occupations prior to the war, such as domestic service, revelled in the “sisterhood” of larger groups. Although when the war was over many women were forced to quit industrial jobs to make way for returning men, their role in the war had fundamentally changed how society regarded them and in 1918 around 8.5 million women first got the vote, following the actions of the suffragette movement. The Women of the War brooch is a stunning piece of jewellery. Plated with a gold tone and hand finished with brilliant baguette crystals, the poppy brooches are dedicated to the memory of the courageous women who served and lost their lives as a direct result of the First World War, whose names are recognised by CWGC as women serving in the auxiliary units during the First World War. Each brooch comes with a certificate commemorating the life of one of these brave women and also acts as a way of saying thank you to all the women, who often have untold stories, who ultimately went on to change society and women’s place within it. With all profits raised from the sale of the brooches going directly to the Legion and their important work, they also help support the British Armed Forces family today. The Women of the First World War brooch is available from The Royal British Legion’s official online shop www.poppyshop.org.uk for £29.99
