LOC AL NEWS
NEWS FROM WHITLEY BAY CHAMBER OF TRADE The Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade are an independent, not-for-profit organisation. They aim to inspire, connect and support businesses, services, organisations and charities within Whitley Bay, Monkseaton, and Cullercoats. Here they share the latest initiatives they’ve been adopting to improve the economic prosperity in the area.
FIVER FEST
February saw the trial of an initiative called ‘Fiver ‘Fest’ in Whitley Bay. The basic idea is, if every adult in Whitley Bay spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops and businesses during the promotion, instead of online or the big supermarket, it would mean an extra £9.3 million per year going into our local economy. I’m sure you know there saying, “Lies, damn lies and statistics” but as numbers go, £9.3 million is quite an interesting one! The initiative was originally set up by an organisation called Totally Locally, which was the brainchild of Chris Sands and his business, “The Good Company”. They created all the branding, and the idea is to help businesses 6
to take part with promotional materials and support. The Chamber of Trade coordinated and promoted those members wishing to take part with their five pound offers. They will be collating feedback over the coming weeks and, once the impact has been analysed, there may be another later in the year - keep your eyes peeled for more details.
SLOW SHOPPING
How many people have heard of “Slow Shopping”? It was an idea introduced to the Chamber by one of their members, Newcastle Building Society who have already embraced the idea between 9.00 and 11.00 on a Wednesday morning in their Whitley Bay branch. Slow Shopping is the idea of Newcastle resident, Katherine Vero. As with many great ideas, Slow Shopping came from personal experience in dealing with her Mam’s dementia. To quote from her website, www.slowshopping.org.uk, “Slow Shopping is for anyone with visible, invisible or intellectual disabilities who may find shopping stressful or challenging. It provides a safe space and time to think
for all who need it as well as their carers and families. This might include those who suffer from anxiety, those with communication or literacy difficulties, the elderly, those suffering with dementia as well as those who have more visible disabilities. This is an inclusive project and is not meant to exclude anyone. Shopping is an essential part of our lives and involves social interaction, health, financial awareness and being out in the everyday world. Many carers and friends and families also find shopping very challenging. Slow Shopping offers dedicated times within the week where staff are aware of the needs of their shoppers and allows them time and space to shop. Chairs are available within the store so you can pause and take your time whilst inside the store. Help points in the store where staff are aware of the particular needs of their shoppers. Customers are not identified as having additional needs and there are no special aisles or separation which can be the source of more stress.” The Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade sees Slow Shopping as a great way to create a real sense of community within the town. There are other groups, organisations and individual businesses who are either already on board or would like to find out more and we would just like to be part of this great
WHITLEY BAY GIFT VOUCHERS
As a way to retain money in the local economy the Chamber of Trade came up with the idea of Whitley Bay Gift Vouchers. These were introduced in the third quarter of 2019 and completely sold out before Christmas. This means that potentially £5,000 will be spent in member businesses over the coming months. A new supply of vouchers are now in stock and available to purchase from Hamiedog Menswear on Parkview. Each voucher is for £10 There is a dedicated Facebook page www.facebook.com WhitleyBayGiftVouchers where over 30 participating businesses are listed. There really is something for everyone, from “Anne Thomas Workwear” to “Ocean Zen”. If you are ever stuck for a gift idea please think of these as a great option that is also supporting your friends family and neighbours who run these local businesses and help to keep our town alive and prospering. www.facebook.com/WhitleyBayGiftVouchers
initiative. It is still very early days but hopefully over the coming months we can start to promote those businesses taking part and publicise the times when Slow Shopping will be available. There is little or no cost involved and as an added benefit more shoppers will be encouraged to come into Whitley Bay. Although there are many Chamber members who are not in the retail sector, it would be fair to say that if the retailer businesses in the town were doing well then the town as a whole will also be thriving.
At Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade, we work hard to improve our towns economic prosperity and represent Whitley Bay business interests on both a local and regional level. The support we offer extends to both established and start-up businesses alike. We strive to encourage the development of trade and commercial activity in the town, the overall promotion of Whitley Bay and its immediate trading areas. To find out more visit our website.

Chartered Surveyors, Estate Agents, Valuers
Local Commercial Property Market bucks National Trend As Chartered Surveyors and Commercial Property Agents, based in North Shields, we continue to experience good levels of activity within the local commercial property market. This comes at a time of high levels of uncertainty within the economy and the national and regional Commercial Property Markets. It is of no coincidence that activity levels in the local commercial property sector have been enhanced as a result of the regeneration of the local area including projects such as the restoration of the iconic Spanish City. Proposals by North Tyneside Council to improve areas such as Wallsend, North Shields and the Fish Quay, together with further improvements to Whitley Bay and the Northern and Southern Promenades, will hopefully continue to attract inward investment into the local area and maintain the levels of activity.
James Barlow and Richard Fenwick RICS Chartered Surveyors and Commercial Property Agents
Park View in Whitley Bay in particular has bene ted from the introduction of a number of independent boutiques and businesses over recent years and was singled out recently in a list published by The Guardian as one of the “top 10 cool shopping districts around the world” where it shares the spotlight with the likes of a boulevard in Paris, a former distillery district in Toronto and an arty area in the Russian capital St Petersburg. We have acted as agents in a number of sales and lease transactions involving a broad range of buildings including retail units, o ces and industrial premises in the local area which have involved a number of new start businesses being established as well as those relocating into the area. If you are considering selling or letting your commercial property and require further advice, please contact either Richard Fenwick or James Barlow at RA Jackson & Son LLP. 5 TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE LONGTERM FITNESS RESULTS Making health and fitness resolutions is easy, sticking to them is the hard part. We introduce you to one local fitness expert who shares with us his top tips to achieve and maintaining those resolutions all year round.
M
y name is Aaron Phillips, Owner of Ocean Fit Personal Training Studio in Whitley Bay and Ocean Fit Online, a remote training platform. I have been a full time Personal trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coach now for many years working with 100's of people in the local area helping them change their lives for the better and now with our Online Training platform I am now able to work with people from around the globe. With time comes a lot of experience and I know this time of year a lot of people will be making resolutions to improve their health and fitness which is always fantastic to hear but hard to maintain if you aren't prepared for long term changes. I have listed the top things I know can help you maintain and achieve long term results with your new fitness & lifestyle commitment!
Aaron Phillips
1 BE 100% COMMITTED & SET REALISTIC GOALS
If your head is not in the game from the start you are pretty much guaranteed to fail. That is the harsh truth. Your goals need to me manageable and achievable. I LOVE to hear and see ambition from my clients but we have to be realistic with ourselves as well. Why not aim to lose a pound before a stone or complete your first Parkrun before signing up to a marathon. Small manageable steps!
2 HAVE A PLAN
How are you going to execute this new resolution? When will you train, what will you actually eat and when will you cook all this healthy food? You need to make a plan for the month at LEAST of how you will execute what you plan to achieve. That normally where I would become useful.
3 BE ACCOUNTABLE
Now this could be with a friend, family member or personal trainer. If you train with a friend/partner you are a lot more likely to stick it out a lot longer. Make sure you are both in it together from the start. Some people might feel self conscious about working with a friend or you may be at different abilities, you could always consult a fitness professional who will keep you on track, motivated and accountable every step of the way!
4 PREPARE YOUR DAYS
Now that you have made a plan of how you will execute a little longer term you can break it down daily. I always encourage my clients to have their clothes out and ready the night before, plan your meals for the next day. This doesn't have to be a 'meal prep' it can be just writing it down and committing to a healthier meal. Also if your not 16
working our from home, plan your journeys...what time do you need to leave, how will you get there etc. Our Beach Camp members are often faced with a frosty car in the winter, this is the perfect opportunity for them to turn around and go back to bed but by preparing the night before they are ready to deal with it and come straight down to the session!
5 BE CONSISTENT AND LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
With consistency comes results. You can not attend sessions every 2 weeks and be disappointed with nothing changes. This type of goal takes some real grit and commitment, you need to really chip away slowly in order to see long sustainable changes. In saying that it can also be counter productive to do too much, listen to your body and when it says stop then STOP! Take rest days and remember to enjoy what you do! If you would like any help, guidance or support with your fitness journey please do not hesitate to contact me at info@ocean-fit.com. CULLERCOATS COMMUNITY FOOTBALL CLUB
T TEAM
MANAGEMEN
VOLUNTEERS
WANTED
Cullercoats Community Football Club has been a key part of the local community in North Tyneside since it was formed in 1915. It has provided an opportunity for participation in association football throughout its history from its current home at the playing fields on Links Avenue, Cullercoats. Historically, the Club consisted of a senior (adult) team only. However, since the season 2005/2006 the Club has expanded to provide access to football for all ages from development (U6-7 years) to senior football (adults). The Club now has in excess of 220 footballers and also provides development opportunities for young coaches and referees. The development and mini soccer sections have several teams at each age group and this provides an excellent platform for the future development and success of the Club. The senior team play in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, having secured promotion last season, and the Club has enjoyed a great deal of success in other league and cup competitions over recent seasons. We are now seeking to further develop the Club, in terms of our pitches and club building, as part of a five year development plan. This work is facilitated by the Management Team. In order to expedite our development plan, we seek to increase the membership of the Management Team from within the local community. We are looking to recruit new volunteers and particularly welcome interest from people with experience in business, law and facilities development. Volunteering at the Club will involve committing a few hours a month to helping us achieve our development outcomes. It is a rewarding opportunity to be involved in the development stage on a project which is aimed at improving outcomes for our members AND the local community, as we seek to involve other community projects at Links Avenue, with a view to improving social welfare, recreation and wellbeing.

PARLEZ VOUS FRANÇAIS? If you fancy learning a new language, Barbara from Lingua Forme is on hand to help, explains Margery Wilson
D
o you set off on holiday to sunnier climes hoping that the hotel staff, waiters, shop assistants, bar staff, etc. all speak English? I always promise myself that I’ll learn a few words, even if it’s just ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, but I never seem to get round to it (and anyway I’m too old to go back to school I tell myself!) Yes, I’m one of the vast army of tourists who use the excuses ‘learning a language is too hard; learning a language will take too long; everyone speaks English don’t they’ to justify my lack of positive action! Learning a new language can be a very fulfilling experience, whether it is something you want to do as a family, are a regular traveler looking to increase your language range, a mature couple retiring abroad, or if you are simply keen to learn. Another myth is that everyone speaks English – I had a comical experience whilst on holiday abroad trying to buy an ankle support in a pharmacy. Believe me, there is only so much you can indicate with hand gestures!! If you like to visit destinations which are somewhat off the beaten track, you may discover few or no English speakers. With this in mind, let us introduce you to Barbara, owner of Lingua Forme, a French conversation classes for Adults business. Barbara is a fully qualified teacher of French with has several years’ experience. She has lived and taught in France, in Metz situated in the beautiful Lorraine region. There are about 220 million French-speakers worldwide, so French really can be a ‘Lingua Franca’. If you were taught French at school, you may remember it as a less than enjoyable time, sitting in rows chanting phrases and declining verbs on end. If you have been away from school for a number of 22
“Barbara runs classes in Seaton Sluice and Whitley Bay, covering all levels from beginners to advanced.” years you may feel embarrassed to be back in a learning situation and unwilling to take the first step. It can take a lot of courage to go through the door for the first time but the effort will be well worth while. For these reasons, let her explain how she runs her sessions. “We sit round a table in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and share knowledge, chat and exchange news. Learning is not confined to any one method but encompasses books, handouts, videos and CD’s. We also play games and learn in a supportive atmosphere where NO question is a stupid question (often the question YOU ask is what other people wanted to know but couldn’t pluck up the courage to ask.) So, all you need to become a proficient French speaker is dedication, hard work and a willingness to learn (and with a lot of laughs sprinkled through the sessions).” Barbara also runs extra classes for A level, GCSE and one-to-one
tuition, just call her to discuss availability and times. Barbara is presently running classes in Seaton Sluice, Whitley Bay and Morpeth, covering all levels from beginners to advanced, so please get in touch if you are interested. At the classes you watch videos, listen to CDs and play games, all aimed at making learning fun. The classes are all aimed at putting you at ease and making you want to learn. At Linga Forme no question is a stupid question. Learning a new language increases your knowledge, challenges you, helps you develop new skills, as well as increasing your confidence and self-esteem. So, why not impress your friends, family and the hotel and restaurant staff on your next visit to the country – it is never too late to learn French! CANNY YOGA FOR ALL VICKY BATSIOUDI IS ON A MISSION TO MAKE YOGA MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL
Y
oga is everywhere these days. There are classes for every style and every fitness level. There are classes full of mantra chanting and others with not a single OM in sight. While there seems to be an endless supply of yoga classes and teachers and despite the well-researched and documented benefits of a regular yoga practice, many people still seem reluctant to take it up. One reason may be that the popular depiction of yoga through numerous Instagram accounts makes it seem inaccessible or reserved for only very flexible people. Another reason might be that the cost seems prohibitive for the people who would actually benefit most from it. This is why Vicky Batsioudi of Canny Yoga, having run yoga classes for well over 5 years, has recently set up a community class at the top floor studio of Heaton Acupuncture Clinic, to tackle both these possible reasons and make this wonderful practice accessible to all. Apart from this class, Vicky has also been teaching pregnancy yoga for the past 4 years, helping dozens of women find peace and calm amidst the fluctuations and changes of pregnancy and providing them with useful tools to prepare for labour, birth and beyond. This is one of Vicky’s favourite classes to teach, especially when she gets

I am glad that I went to your class. Thank you. – Y.” Recognising that a public class may not be suitable for everyone,
Vicky is passionate about helping people discover yoga at their own pace so this is why she offers one to one sessions that can be tailored to suit the individual’s personal needs and goals. WHITLEY BAY ATHLETICS VENUE TO GET BACK ON TRACK
A
running track used by one of the largest athletics clubs in the North East is to undergo repairs. The council-owned track at Churchill Playing Fields, in Whitley Bay, is set to close for repair work in early March for an estimated three months. Both the six-lane 400 metre track and the seven-lane 100 metre section will be completely resurfaced to bring the facility into line with new competition standards introduced by UK Athletics in 2019. The work will also see the installation of a new perimeter fence and entry system to protect the track from misuse. Councillor Sarah Day, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: “It’s really important that we continue to maintain and improve our sporting facilities in the borough for residents and sports clubs to enjoy. This work will ensure that a valued community asset continues to provide opportunities in sport for local people and is a further sign of our commitment to keeping standards high at all our sports and leisure facilities in the borough.” The venue is home to the 117-year-old North Shields Polytechnic Club, which has over 600 members, and specialises in track and field, road running, cross country, fell running, and triathlon for both junior and senior members. John Sutcliffe, Chair of Trustees at North Shields Poly Athletics Club, said: “We are delighted that the council are supporting our club by carrying out this work. It will mean we are able to train and compete on an excellent facility that meets UK Athletics requirements.”

How BlephEx Works
• • • • • • • •
The revolutionary BlephEx equipment consists of a medical grade disposable micro-sponge soaked in a specialist gentle antibacterial lid which is spun precisely and carefully along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfoliating your eyelids.
Itching or scratchy eyes Foreign body sensation Tearing Crusting Redness/inflammation The build-up of bio-matter around the eyelashes Dry eyes Eye rubbing
These are all symptoms of blepharitis or dry eye disease. While we would always recommend an advanced eye examination for peace of mind, at Concept Eye Clinic we now offer a new eye hygiene service by BlephEx. BlephEx will reduce or alleviate these chronic and debilitating symptoms. The treatment is typically repeated at regular intervals, usually every 6 months. By eliminating the inflammatory causes, the overall health of the eyelid is improved. Your eyes can then begin to produce more of their own tears and enjoy a reduction in the chronic and irritating symptoms.
A 20 - 30 minute appointment is required on the first treatment but the procedure itself only takes approximately 10 minutes and is well tolerated. Most patients simply report a tickling sensation. After the procedure, you will be advised on how to maintain your lid hygiene between treatments.
“After the first treatment by Sam, my eyes felt fresher and vision clearer. As a contact lens wearer, the results were incredible” - S.N

COUNTING CALORIES? Sarah Howe, Director of three Curves Fitness Facility’s in the North East, explains why you need to think about more than calories if you’re trying to lose weight.
I
f you’re like most women, you have been on at least a handful of diets in your lifetime. You’ve probably spent more time than you care to remember counting calories. Most diets are based on the simple principle that if you eat fewer calories than you expend, you’ll lose weight. While this is true, it’s only part of the story. When you lose weight, you either lose water, fat, muscle, or most commonly, a combination of all three. Most water is lost in the first week on a weight-loss program. Water is stored with glycogen, a storage form of carbohydrate in your body. When you start to break down some of those carbohydrate stores for energy, you lose water as well. Fat is what you really want to lose! Fat is a storage form of energy and has vital functions in your body, but having too much increases your risk for chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. If you are overweight, you will want to primarily lose fat to prevent disease. Unfortunately, muscle is the innocent victim of most weight-loss plans. The average dieter loses about 30% of their weight in the form of muscle tissue. This is a problem because muscle is the engine to your metabolism. Muscle tissue is metabolically active (burns calories) all day long. Muscle also helps to give you a lean, toned appearance because it is more dense than fat and occupies less space.
WHAT’S WRONG WITH LOSING MUSCLE TISSUE? Because muscle burns calories all day long, if you lose muscle tissue on a given diet, you will lower your metabolism. Over time, it will become more and more difficult to maintain your ideal weight because you will be burning fewer and fewer calories each day.
WHY DO DIETERS LOSE MUSCLE TISSUE? If a diet program is based simply on calories, you will lose muscle tissue. You’ve probably heard of diets that allow you to eat basically anything you want, as long as it is below a certain calorie limit. If you follow a program like this, it might seem ideal and easy to follow, but a large portion of your weight loss will be muscle tissue.
Sarah Howe is a fitness trainer for women, Director of 3 Curves fitness facility’s in the North East and a mother of two. Follow Sarah on instagram @buffmammy
HOW CAN YOU MAINTAIN MUSCLE TISSUE AS YOU LOSE WEIGHT? Firstly, consume more protein. Eat meals that contain the right amount of protein to help maintain muscle tissue and burn fat. Secondly, strength train. It is essential to overload your muscles (make them work!) in order to build and maintain muscle tissue. The Curves workout helps you do just that. Many women fall into the trap of “I’ll just walk instead.” While walking is fantastic exercise, walking alone is not enough. You have to regularly strength train to build and maintain muscle tissue. The good news is BOTH of these are accomplished by following Curves Complete. MORE THAN THE NUMBER ON THE SCALE Now that you understand weight loss is about more than just a number on the scale, you can appreciate why it’s important to consume enough protein and strength train while dieting to maintain muscle tissue. And with Curves Complete, you’ll do just that – maintain muscle and burn fat!

LUFTHANSA TAKES OFF FROM NEWCASTLE INAUGURAL SERVICE TO MUNICH AND BEYOND
L
ufthansa’s newest route to Germany has taken off this month with a nonstop service from Newcastle to Munich. The six-weekly service operates Sunday to Friday and offers leisure and business travellers from the North East an affordable and convenient way to explore Bavaria’s capital city, in addition to providing over 130 onward connections throughout Europe, Americas and Asia Pacific. Fares start from £86 return and available to book now at lufthansa. com. Passengers travelling to Munich on the new service were welcomed at check-in at Newcastle Airport with an inaugural celebration to mark the official launch of the new route. Upon arrival into Munich International Airport (T2), passengers will enjoy a five-star service on-board and from Lufthansa’s modern hub ensuring onward travel and transit is an enjoyable travel experience year-round. Munich is renowned for its annual Oktoberfest, beer halls, classical music and iconic landmarks such as the Neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus and holiday-makers in particular can now take advantage of the convenient new service. This is the first Munich service for Lufthansa from Newcastle, opening its seventh destination in the UK and the new service complements the existing Eurowings direct flight to Dusseldorf, strengthening the North East’s accessibility for Business travellers to Europe and beyond. Announcing the new flight, Andreas Köster, Senior Director Sales UK, Ireland & Iceland, Lufthansa Group said: “We are delighted to be able to offer passengers in the North East with an additional and convenient new route into Germany.
34
At Lufthansa, we pride ourselves on being a premium, full-service, five-star airline and in connecting our customers to one of our two major hubs with our world-wide network. This new service will connect our customers from Newcastle to exciting cities and cultures in Europe and beyond.” The new Munich service will benefit economic development in both tourism and business across the two dynamic regions as Germany continues to be the North East’s largest inbound tourism market. Nick Jones, Chief Executive at Newcastle International Airport said: “We are delighted that Lufthansa, a globally-renowned, five-star airline, has chosen to operate from Newcastle International Airport. Watching the first flight take to the skies this morning was a very proud moment for the Airport and an important milestone for the region. As well as opening up Munich as a direct destination, this new
route will provide over 130 onward connections throughout Europe and beyond – providing both our business and leisure passengers with more choice and flexibility in 2020. I hope that the North East travelling public support and enjoy using this new service.” As part of the Lufthansa Group’s ongoing efforts to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, 2020 will also see a continuation of its fleet renewal programme. Two new fuelefficient aircraft - consuming up to 25 per cent less kerosene than their predecessors – will be delivered on average every two weeks until 2027. These efforts are complemented by various compensation measures, including the group’s new platform ‘Compensaid‘, which allows passengers of all Lufthansa Group airlines to offset their individual carbon footprint by either purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel, supporting a reforestation project in Nicaragua or a combination of both.

AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER FOR TYNEMOUTH LIBRARY Exciting plans are being drawn up that could see the transformation of Tynemouth Library into a modern hub for the community. The council’s Cabinet will consider the plans at its meeting in May 2020 as part of the Ambition for North Tyneside programme, which sets out how the council will regenerate all parts of the borough and make it fit for the future. The current building at 26 Front Street has served the community for almost 70 years, since it opened on February 10 1953. If the plans are approved, the building would be completely rebuilt as a modern hub that could accommodate library and financial services under one roof. The council will continue to operate the library and will partner with Newcastle Building Society to secure the creation of a community branch inside. High-quality private apartments could also be created above. Councillor Bruce Pickard, North Tyneside’s Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “We are committed to investing in the borough to keep it a great place to live, work and visit. The library would share the space with a community building society, to improve local people’s access to both library and community facilities. “The new building would be brighter and more
accessible, more modern and appealing, and sensitive to the historic conservation area in which it sits. The co-location of libraries and building societies has proven successful elsewhere in the North East and we are very excited about the prospect of working with Newcastle Building Society on this project. “We know how much our residents value Tynemouth Library for its convenience and accessibility, so even though the libraries at North Shields and Cullercoats are within a couple of miles, we will be operating our mobile library nearby while the work is carried out.” The new library would also have a Changing Places toilet to meet the needs of people with learning or physical disabilities. Andrew Haigh, Newcastle Building Society’s chief executive, said: “As the region’s largest building society, we believe that our high streets play a vital role at the heart of our communities. Our co-located, community branches ensure that local people can continue to benefit from the convenience of financial services on their high street. We’re looking forward to working with North Tyneside Council and the Tynemouth library to create another successful community hub within our region.”

GIVE SOMEONE POWER OF ATTORNEY… BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE Lasting Powers of Attorney are invaluable documents as part of the overall planning of your estate as managing your financial affairs can become more difficult as you get older. If a person is unable to manage their affairs due to mental incapacity and they have not made a valid Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney, their assets will be frozen as no one (including their spouse and children) has the authority to deal with them. At this point someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as the person’s Deputy. The Court will then authorize the Deputy to deal with the person’s affairs in a certain manner. This is a very time consuming (around 6 months) and expensive (in the region of £1,750) process. This situation can be simply avoided through the making of a Lasting Power of Attorney. By making a Lasting Power of Attorney you can decide whom you would like to manage your affairs in the event that you are unable to do so either due to physical or mental incapacity. There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney that can be made, one dealing with your property and financial affairs and the other dealing with your personal welfare. Personal Welfare
This power gives your attorney the authority to make decisions regarding your healthcare and medical treatment. Property and Affairs
This power enables your attorney to deal with your bank accounts and your property. This includes decisions in relation to selling or renting your property, paying your bills, applying for benefits you are entitled to and all aspects of dealing with your bank accounts, savings and investments.

GET YOUR GLOW ON! Unlike gyms focussing on working out, or weight clubs which focus only on calories, Glow classes believe the best way for better health is a combined approach of exercise and diet. Margery Wilson visited her local Glow class ran by Liz Ford to find out more...
I
t was with some trepidation that I arrived at my local Glow class on a dark, wet evening. It was years since I had done anything more strenuous than walking, but the information video on the Glow website assured me that I could work at my own pace and ability. As soon as I entered the spacious hall I felt comfortable – the buzz of conversation and the greeting of the coach, Liz, were very welcoming. Liz told me about the session and how she had a background knowledge of dietary needs and healthy eating plans. She introduced me to the members who had arrived and gave me a basic health questionnaire to fill in (this was purely for my own well-being). Having returned the form, the ladies around me included me in their conversation and told me about the myriad of social activities Liz arranged for them as well as taking the classes. After about half an hour, Liz gave a little talk – this week about Osteoporosis – then the work began! There were about 40 ladies there, and we started with a warm-up session which consisted of a series of gentle movements performed with background music. We then had a 'water break' and the workout part of the session began. For each exercise (which was repeated for 30 seconds) Liz showed an easy version and a more energetic one, and it was left to the individual to decide which one to follow. I opted for the easy version and found I could keep up, though my arm/leg co-ordination left a lot to be desired! As the session progressed, however, I found that I was getting into the rhythm
40
and although one exercise flowed into another I felt I was improving. Throughout the workout there were 'water breaks' so I never felt dehydrated. The cool-down at the end was very relaxing and rounded off the session perfectly. Liz showed me a timetable of the weekly sessions and each one consisted of different sets of movements so there was always variety. This variety applied to all her classes on different days, different times and in different venues. I have to admit that I was more than favourably impressed with my first visit. I have been to weight-loss groups and exercise groups before but to have them both included in one session was great. I have never been to a class where I felt so much at home and where there was no sense of others watching and criticising. The atmosphere from start to finish was genuinely friendly and sociable, the surroundings welcoming and the exercises were extremely 'do-able'. I would have no hesitation in recommending these classes (whatever your age, shape, size or fitness level) and am looking forward to next time. I feel as if I have made some new friends and I was certainly 'GLOWING' when I finished. Liz Ford runs Glow classes in Whitley Bay, Seaton Sluice, Blyth, Cramlington and Seaton Burn. TO END LONELINESS IN NORTH TYNESIDE Loneliness is an issue that is growing in awareness in our society, and VODA North Tyneside are working to tackle this issue in the borough
GOOD NEIGHBOURS SCHEME: Volunteers help older residents with odds jobs
T
he Government recently launched a new website - Let’s Talk Loneliness – to bring together organisations, resources and inspirational stories to get more people talking about loneliness. One of their first case studies featured Minn Marshall, a beneficiary of North Tyneside VODA’s Good Neighbours project, which looks to team up volunteers to provide support to isolated residents in North Tyneside with small tasks and errands typically associated with a good neighbour. Minn, an 89 year old resident of North Tyneside, was put in touch with the project by her warden when she started struggling with her shopping. Minn now attends Good Neighbour’s weekly shopping trip, supported by one of our volunteers. Minn said: “I really look forward to Tuesdays now and don’t know where I’d be without the Good Neighbours.” VODA has managed the Good Neighbours project in North Tyneside for a number of years, including a weekly supported shopping trip and volunteers who use their skills to help out beneficiaries with odd jobs that they can no longer manage themselves. We recently secured funding to expand this project to the west of the borough and have appointed a new project coordinator to recruit new volunteers and beneficiaries to support this growth.

In 2019, VODA secured funding for a new partnership – Ending Loneliness in North Tyneside – to bring together likeminded organisations to work in collaboration to tackle social isolation and loneliness in the borough. 42
Over the next four years VODA, Age UK, Citizens Advice and North Tyneside Carer’s Centre will be increasing our capacity to deliver services that improve people’s wellbeing and increase their connections within the community. Whether it’s volunteering, attending groups or engaging in social activity, each organisation in the partnership can provide a wide range of activities for all ages to reduce feelings of loneliness. The partnership launched in Killingworth on Thursday 6 February as part of ‘Time to Talk Day’ 2020. Further events will be held across the borough over the next few months.
THE SIGN DIRECTORY
VODA’s Ending Loneliness Project coordinator has also been working to identify new ways of working when tackling social isolation and loneliness. North Tyneside has a wealth of activity and community groups available to residents, but information can prove difficult to find. That’s why the partnership keen to increase awareness and public engagement with the SIGN Directory. The SIGN Directory is an online directory of over 200 providers of community services and events for the residents of North Tyneside. Based on the information available on the SIGN, Directory, VODA has produced the first in a series of ward-focused information booklets which list activities based on health, socialising, volunteering, learning and mental wellbeing. ’Things to do in Wallsend and Howden’ is available via GP surgeries, community venues, local libraries and the VODA website,
This winter, as part of the North Tyneside Winter Support Network, VODA facilitated the distribution of packs to residents who need extra support keeping warm during the winter months. The packs included a fleece blanket, hot water bottle, thermometer, thermo mug, thermal socks, hats, gloves and snood. Alongside this, volunteers have made almost 200 draught excluders so far, which have been distributed to the Bay Foodbank and Walking With in North Tyneside. HAPPY TO CHAT
Happy to Chat is another initiative that is launching this winter. VODA is working in collaboration with members of the SIGN Network and Whitley Bay Big Local to develop Happy to Chat schemes across North Tyneside to help reduce loneliness and social isolation. The aim is to recruit volunteers who are willing to Chat Happily with other residents who would like company or conversation. The aim is to encourage people to show kindness to one another, take time to listen to others and make connections in the local community. Volunteers will wear Happy to Chat badges so that people know they can approach them to chat. The scheme will then hopefully be extended to include cafes that are willing to host a Happy to Chat table on a regular basis, with volunteers available to sit and chat with people who would like to chat. Launch events were held at the end of January at the Beacon Centre in North Shields and Whitley Bay Big Local and based on these events, times will be confirmed for regular events at these locations.

LOCAL PROPERTY COMPANY BUILD ON THEIR EXPANDING PORTFOLIO INTIMATE BUNGALOW DEVELOPMENT COMMENCES IN BLYTH
F
ive years after launching a property development company specialising exclusively in building outstanding new bungalows, Morpeth-based husband and wife team Alan and Victoria Fleming are about to expand their portfolio of bespoke bungalows in Blyth. Alan and Victoria’s business, Altoria Development, saw their first development form at Furrow Grove in Stannington which took the market by storm. The quality and high specification ensured that all fourteen bungalows sold off-plan. Some would say quite an achievement for first-time developers! They are looking to match that success once more with their latest development named Oakfield Grove, marketed as an intimate development of four detached bungalows nestled into a cosy cul-de-sac off Inglewood Close in Chase Farm. Alan said “We are very much looking forward to bringing our product to Blyth. There is a clear demand for bungalows throughout Northumberland and we pride ourselves in the high-quality finish each home offers. Remarkably, before a spade was placed into the ground, we have had numerous enquiries about this development”. Altoria Development say their niche which sets them poles apart from other developers is their ability to offer a bespoke service that allows prospective purchasers to alter internal layouts and choose from a wide range of internal fittings to provide a new home that is fit for purpose. Oakfield Grove will be approached via a private roadway off Inglewood Close. Each home will be finished in a rustic red brick and a grey roof tile to compliment the nearby surroundings. At approximately 982 square feet, each property will include two 46

Hallway cupboard and integrated garage with electric door. Victoria said “As with all of our developments we have kept the specification high and everything is included within the sale price so there are no hidden extras”. Oakfield Grove includes as standard: a range of laminate worktops and co-ordinated cabinetry in a choice of colour, integrated Bosch appliances to include a tallboy fridge and freezer, induction hob, oven and extractor. Choice of internal white door and door handle, choice of tiling to family bathroom, range of flooring included throughout the property and choice of electrical layout throughout. Modern combination boiler with radiator system, turfed front and rear gardens and integrated single garage with electric door.
The couple saw construction commence in February and are aiming for an end of summer 2020 completion date which will see the first set of bungalow keys handed over. Victoria added “Completion day is the best part of my job. I work directly with each buyer to design their perfect new home from internal finishes to landscaping. So, when completion day arrives I’m privileged to walk the new homeowner through their bungalow, seeing their ideas become a reality. It’s a very proud moment for all of the team.” For a sales brochure or to request a site viewing please contact Altoria Development on 01670 432603 or alternatively visit the website www.altoriadevelopment.co.uk

INTRODUCING ELLIOT CHANNER Wildlife sculptor, Elliot Channer has begun exhibiting his bronze wildlife sculpture with Morpeth based Tallantyre gallery. Two of his latest bronze pieces, Diving Kingfisher and Harvest Mouse, are currently available in the gallery.
B
orn in 1989 in Staffordshire, Elliot showed a passion for wildlife and art from a young age. In 2013, after studying at The City and Guilds of London Art School, Elliot set up a custom-made studio in Staffordshire and began working as a full-time sculptor. Taking his inspiration from nature and the countryside, Elliot initially travelled throughout the UK in order to observe and photograph animals in their natural habitat. He now travels the world in pursuit of more exotic wildlife. However, in recent months, he has again sought inspiration nearer to home, creating two new pieces, a kingfisher and harvest mouse. Working from visual information gathered, Elliot first wanted to create one of his favourite birds in a dynamic and elegant pose - a great challenge to achieve in solid bronze. This led to
Diving Kingfisher 48
Harvest Mouse him to creating his Diving Kingfisher. The second sculpture at Tallantyre is a small harvest mouse. Another favourite subject of Elliot’s, he paid particular attention to achieving the character of the animal, giving the impression it may scurry away at any moment. Having taken as much visual information as possible through photographs and pencil sketches, the sculpting process begins by constructing a metal framework or armature onto which the clay can be built up. Whilst modelling, Elliot focuses on capturing the life and grace of the subject, concentrating on their key features. By introducing spontaneity when forming the main body of the sculpture he achieves an animated sculpture. Once a sculpture is completed, Elliot's clay models are then cast in bronze. He works closely with the team of skilled craftsmen at a bronze foundry in Birmingham where his work is cast using the ancient lost wax process. The process of patination is a key element of Elliot’s
work, through which he aims to achieve a representation of the true colours of the animal. Described as one of the 'young stars' of the international art fair circuit by Belgravia magazine, Elliot’s sculptures have been exhibited at numerous prestigious venues, including the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club and the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery, Pall Mall.

EXCITING PLANS FOR NORTH SHIELDS TOWN CENTRE
A
mbitious plans to transform an empty office block in North Shields into high-quality homes have been revealed. North Tyneside Council has completed the purchase of Unicorn House in Suez Street – a large three-storey building which has been vacant for nearly seven years. The plan is to clear the site to make way for a high-quality, housing-led regeneration scheme complementing the ongoing work at Northumberland Square. It is part of the council’s emerging North Shields master plan – aimed at transforming the town centre and riverside into an environment where more people choose to live, work and spend their leisure time. Deputy Mayor of North Tyneside Council Cllr Bruce Pickard said: “We are an ambitious council, which is reflected in our plans for North Shields and the borough as a whole. Unicorn House is a former office building in a prominent position which has been empty for some time and has become an eyesore. “This is a fantastic opportunity to really revitalise and breathe new life into this part of the town, which links the town centre with the riverside, and attract more people to live in the town centre. It will also complement our other exciting plans for North Shields and the rest of the borough and help keep North Tyneside a great place to live, work and visit. “This is an exciting time for North Shields as our master plan begins to take shape – we are working closely with residents, businesses and our partners and will be seeking their views and we’re sure everyone will be really pleased with the proposals.” Meanwhile, work to transform the landmark Grade II listed terraced property building in Northumberland

Square into luxury homes has undergone a complete internal and external refurbishment and is nearing completion. The sensitive refurbishment of these historic properties has seen the reinstatement of many of the original features, such as ornate cornicing and window details, which contribute to the character of the Conservation Area. A new build part of the scheme at the rear of the property is also taking shape providing 28 family homes with secure courtyard parking and gardens. Together these will provide new family housing opportunities in the heart of North Shields town centre. The £5m redevelopment is expected to be complete this summer. In addition, the square’s cherished Wooden Dolly has been raised from its plinth and transported to the workshop of sculptor Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson in Kilburn, North Yorkshire, where it is being sensitively restored. Once restored, the dolly will be returned to Northumberland Square. Unicorn House – designed by
Renton Howard Woods Associates of London - opened in 1968 as a purpose-built Government building which housed more than 200 staff from the Inland Revenue and Department of Health and Social Security. A report in the Shields Weekly News at the time described the three-storey building as “one of a number of industrialised office buildings being put up by the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works for government departments in various parts of the country”. The first such building in the North East was Lion House in Alnwick, which opened earlier in 1968. The report adds: “Its main advantage lies in the increased productivity which it provides on site, as well as in the design offices and in the factory.” North Tyneside Council later moved its social services and customer services departments into the building. Unicorn House eventually closed after the council’s lease on the building came to an end and its services were moved to the Customer First Centre.
