ABC is a national trade association representing the merit shop construction industry. The Pelican Chapter represents over 500 contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and industry professionals and covers 52 parishes in Louisiana. The Merit Shop Message is produced quarterly and distributed digitally to members.

Fall is finally upon us, thanks to this cool and welcomed weather. We have also been blessed (as of the time I am writing this) with a slow hurricane season in our region. What has not been slow is all the activity at the Pelican Chapter offices and training centers in Baton Rouge and Westlake. I was called to the office in late September to handle some routine business that should only take 15 minutes, and I left three hours later, inspired by the initiatives, events and community outreach efforts that are in the works. There are so many ways that you can get involved at the Pelican Chapter. The staff is doing an amazing job, and there is a lot to keep up with; I want to be involved with it all. I was very encouraged with all of the EIC entries this year and I think there will be some great competition on these outstanding projects completed by Pelican Members. A total of 33 projects have been submitted to compete at the chapter level, for a chance to go on to ABC National’s 29th annual Excellence In Construction (EIC) awards. This year’s “celebrity” judges included a mixture of local university construction management professors and industry association partners. Chapter-level winners were notified in mid-October, and I hope you’ll join us as we celebrate our winners at the Crowne Plaza on Wednesday, December 5.

Now that the 2018 ABC of Louisiana Membership Directories are out, I hope everyone is utilizing them as I do. When fellow members ask me: “Where can I get [industry specific xyz] from?”, I tell them to look it up in the directory. Or I give them member

companies out of the directory, which is a great starting point. I recently got a call from a vendor about doing business and while he was talking, I looked for their company in the directory and saw they were not members. I politely said that I choose to do business with ABC Members and if they were interested in joining, I could put them in touch with Anna Zebeau and if they joined, we could start talking about using them as a vendor. This is an easy way to encourage membership and I challenge you to do the same in your organization.

VOTE LIKE YOUR WORK DEPENDS ON IT BY JOHN WALTERS, ABC OF LOUISIANA If you are like me, your televisions, radios, social media outlets, inboxes and mailboxes are beginning to fill up with campaign propaganda. With 35 of the 100 United States Senate seats up for grabs and all 435 of the United States House of Representatives seats potentially on the ballot, it will certainly be an eventful midterm election cycle in Louisiana, in Washington D.C. and across the country. The primary election in Louisiana is on Tuesday, November 6, followed by the general election on Saturday, December 8. Candidate qualifying for these races ended in July. All six of Louisiana’s U.S. House seats are on the Election Day ballot; the two Louisiana Senate seats will not be on the ballot. The statewide race in Louisiana to keep your eye on is for Secretary of State. To view a list of qualified candidates for office for this election cycle, visit the Voter Portal section of the Louisiana Secretary of State’s website: www.voterportal.sos.la.gov/. While the last day to register in person or online in the primary election has passed, you still have time to register in person to vote in the general election. That deadline is Wednesday, November 7. You can register in person at any registrar of voters’ office, and you can also register in person at any of the following locations: •Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (must be at least 16 years old to register to vote); •Louisiana Department of Social Services; •WIC offices;

•Food stamp offices; •Medicaid offices; •Offices serving persons with disabilities; •Armed forces recruitment offices. You also have the option of registering online for the December 8 general election. Register online at: www.voterportal.sos.la.gov/VoterRegistration. The last day to register online to vote in the December 8 general election is Saturday, November 17. THE BR CLAY SHOOT WAS ONE FOR THE BOOKS BY LINDSEY RUSS, PROGRAMS & EVENTS COORDINATOR

We couldn’t have ordered better weather if we tried to at our annual Baton Rouge Clay Shoot. Clear skies, minimal humidity and a low-sixties to start and mid-eighties to end contributed to this great event. But what truly made this a successful event were our 120+ attendees who showed off their impressive shooting skills, and the help of the dozen LSU Construction Management students who volunteered their time and efforts. Our members and their guests began the morning of Friday, October 12 at the Covey Rise Lodge with some great breakfast biscuits and coffee, sponsored by American Covers Incorporated. The four-man teams then tackled 15 difficult shooting stations, each station ranged from six to eight shots (three to four pairs). Clays sailed and snapped in half countless times as the contenders enjoyed the company, weather, and on-course cuisine by Industrial Supply Municipal Company, Classic Industrial Services and Coastal Performance Sportswear. After each team completed their shooting cards, they returned to the lodge for some chicken, beans and rice, dished up by Mammoet and Beard Construction. They washed the meal down with some cold drinks, sponsored by Performance Contractors. Our staff and events committee members meticulously tallied the impressive scores while the attendees enjoyed lunch.

Third place was awarded to a fourman team from SAMUEL. Turner Industries took home second place with 360 points, and first place went to Triad Electric & Controls with an impressive 379 points. Once again, Triad will get to hold on to the trophy for one more year. The overall shooter, Thomas Sparks, was also on the winning Triad team! After awards, we drew for the impressive duck hunt raffle. We collected thousands of dollars to benefit LSU’s Construction Management ABC National Construction Management Competition team next year. The competition will be held March 24-28 in Long Beach, Calif., during the ABC Convention in 2019. Overall, this was a great day to support LSU and enjoy the Sportsman’s Paradise. We appreciate our event sponsors and each person that joined us!

CALLING THE SHOTS

ABC Pelican Members had the opportunity to enjoy two clay shoot tournaments this month, and we could not have ordered better weather on these backto-back Fall Fridays if we had tried! Our annual Southwest Clay Shoot hosted around 60 Members and their guests at the Lake Charles Gun Club the morning of October 19. The 14 teams wasted no time racking up the points, enjoying some friendly rivalries, and sampling some Cajun cuisine on the range. Even members of our staff joined in on the fun. Primoris held the coveted title as our winning team for 2017, and vocalized a friendly wager on our ABC Pelican social media platforms just the day prior that they were confident that they were keeping the winning trophy for the 2018 Southwest Clay Shoot. With that bit of color, *drumroll* for our winning teams: Congratulations to our first place winners, Repcon, who chalked up an impressive 363 13

points to claim the top award of the day, our second place team was Primoris Services Corporation with 298 points, and third place was ISC Constructors, L.L.C. with 277 points. The top shooter of the day, also from the Repcon team went home with not only bragging rights, but also a 4-man guided specklebelly hunt. From kick-off to graduation, the seven weeks spent in Uncommon Leadership were a challenging yet fulfilling journey. Each person in our class of 22 not only learned so much about themselves, but also learned so much about one another. All holding a range of different roles within our companies, each of us shared a desire to learn and lead.

leadership does not always mean a person holds a management position or is in a role labeled as “leader.” Rather, leadership is about selfawareness and empathy above all else. Throughout the class it became more evident than ever that effective leadership is not something that comes easy to those that lead. Leadership is a practice and a discipline for understanding our differences and leading others, not as we want to be lead, but as they want to be lead. I am

COURT RULES THAT SUPPLIER NOTICES OF NON-PAYMENT ARE NOT REQUIRED BY: JACOB E. ROUSSEL, LABOR & EMPLOYMENT ATTORNEY, BREAZEALE, SACHSE & WILSON, L.L.P. La. R.S. 38:2242(F) is the provision of the Public Works Act requiring an unpaid material supplier of a subcontractor to furnish a notice of non-payment to the general contractor and owner within 75 days from the last day of the month in which the materials were delivered. For general contractors, this notice requirement is a valuable tool by which the contractor can stay informed as to whether any subcontractors have failed to pay their suppliers during the course of a project. However, in August 2018, the First Circuit Court of Appeal held that material suppliers are not required to provide the 75 day notice in order to assert a payment claim against the general contractor and surety under the Public Works Act. The case of Woodrow Wilson Constr., LLC v. Amtek of Louisiana, Inc., 2017-1156, 2018 WL 3719719 (La. App. 1 Cir. 8/6/18), involved a claim by a material supplier against a subcontractor, the general contractor, and the surety which furnished the payment bond on a public construction project. It was undisputed that the owner paid the general contractor for the materials. However, a dispute arose between the general contractor and the subcontractor, resulting in the subcontractor not receiving payment for the materials from the general contractor and subcontractor not making payment to the supplier. After substantial completion of the project, the material supplier timely filed a statement of claim under the Public Works Act and later filed its lawsuit seeking to recover payment for the materials. Following a bench trial on the supplier’s claims, the trial court ruled that the subcontractor was obligated to pay the supplier for the materials but dismissed the supplier’s claims against the general contractor and surety. Specifically, the trial court concluded that the supplier did not have a claim against the general contractor or surety since the supplier failed to timely provide the 75 day notice of non-payment required by La. R.S. 38:2242(F). On appeal, the First Circuit reversed the dismissal of the supplier’s claims against the general contractor and surety. The appellate court analyzed the specific language of the applicable statutes of the Public Work Act and held that a supplier’s

failure to furnish the 75 day notice of non-payment only results in the supplier losing its right to a privilege against any unexpended funds in the possession of the owner. The court, however, determined that the supplier’s failure to provide the notice does not preclude the supplier from seeking payment from the general contractor and surety. The court stated that its interpretation of the statutes was consistent with the purpose of the Public Works Act, which is to protect those performing labor and furnishing materials for public works. From a practical standpoint, this decision could result in suppliers no longer providing notices of non-payment to general contractors on public projects. Suppliers may conclude that the hassle of timely providing the notices is not worth of the benefit of preserving a privilege against any funds in the possession of the owner since the supplier can maintain a claim against the general contractor and surety regardless of whether it sends the notice of nonpayment. As such, a general contractor may receive no notice throughout a project that a subcontractor has failed to pay a supplier, yet the general contractor can ultimately be liable to the supplier despite only learning of the unpaid amounts following substantial completion of the project. Of course, the effect of this decision on general contractors may be lessened by requiring subcontractors to furnish partial payment releases from suppliers with each progress payment. Nonetheless, the First Circuit’s ruling is significantly beneficial to suppliers and unfavorable to general contractors which previously relied upon notices of non-payment to stay informed as to whether any suppliers were unpaid during public construction projects.

Up dat e s f ro m A B C N A T I O N A L CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY ORGANIZES TO REDUCE SUICIDE RISK AMONG CONSTRUCTION WORKERS WASHINGTON, October 17— ABC was one of 17 member organizations of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention that met recently in Washington, D.C., to collaborate on how to equip companies to better address mental health issues and reduce the risk of suicide in the construction industry. Members of the Alliance, which was classified as a 501(c)(3) public charity this summer, formed governance, fundraising, education and marketing task forces during a strategic planning session during National Suicide Prevention Month. “Our industry’s steadfast commitment to safety needs to extend beyond our jobsites to ensure that workers struggling with mental health issues get the help they need,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development, who attended the meeting. “We are proud to be part of the Alliance to draw attention to the national issue of suicide risk and help increase access to mental health across the construction industry.” The construction and extraction industry had the second-highest suicide rate at 53.3 out of 100,000 workers and the highest total number of suicides by industry, according to a 2016 report from the Centers for Disease Control. Since the report was released, the construction community has taken important steps to provide and disseminate information and resources for suicide prevention and promotion of mental health in construction. ABC also encourages member companies to include employee mental health in their 19

safety programs. DURING CAREERS IN CONSTRUCTION MONTH, ABC EMPHASIZES THE NEED TO FILL SKILLS GAP WASHINGTON, October 10 – October is Careers in Construction Month, which creates the perfect opportunity to highlight the many career paths the construction industry provides for people with a variety of experience, education and expertise. And especially given the estimated 500,000 open construction positions in the United States right now, workforce development and filling the skills gap remains a key priority for ABC and its members. In a recent op-ed in The Washington Times, Michael D. Bellaman, president and CEO of ABC, emphasized that while a college degree is not required to have a lifelong and successful construction career, the industry also offers many professional opportunities with competitive salaries for college-bound students. Construction management—an undergraduate field of study that comprises the planning, design, safety, quality control and execution of construction projects—boasts countless career prospects for students interested in math, physics, economics, business management, engineering and communication. The major provides excellent employment options for recent graduates, with colleges reporting sold-out job fairs and outstanding jobplacement results. CELEBRATING CAREERS IN CONSTRUCTION MONTH

Throughout the month and across the country, schools, contractors and organizations partner together to host events and communicate to the public, stories and messages that raise awareness and introduce students and young professionals to rewarding construction careers. Annually, this nationwide campaign educates the public about the lifelong opportunities available for a craft professional.

On October 17, 23, 24 and 25, we hosted more than 1,000 high school students from across the state of Louisiana at Build Your Future events. These highly anticipated and hugely successful events would not have been possible without the hours of volunteering, expertise, innovation, equipment, materials, food and music donated by our fantastic Members and partners. We are very grateful for the way you invested in each of these students. For the first time for ABC Pelican, we held a Build Your Future event for one day only at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales on October 17. In another first, we partnered with the New Orleans/ Bayou Chapter to expand our reach. More than 35 Louisiana high schools from 15 parishes were represented as the students either watched or experienced scaffolding, safety, crane, millwright, electrical, drone, boilermaker, heavy machinery and pipefitting demonstrations. This hands-on exposure to the different crafts left a quality impression and solid understanding of the different craft opportunities. The students also met with local colleges and vendors to learn about the technical and craft courses that are offered across the state. They even enjoyed some delicious jambalaya prepared by MMR Group, and listened to some great music and safety moments from Chad Pierce, our Education and Manpower Committee Chair.

These high schoolers that joined us in Gonzales were primarily ninth and tenth graders so that they could understand the opportunities in the construction industry before determining a diploma pathway, which happens during the spring of their tenth grade year. Our hope is that this event and our efforts with high schools will help students learn of the benefits of the Jumpstart program and having a career following high school graduation. We were also privileged to host more than 500 high school students from 17 different schools at our Southwest Training Center in Westlake over the course of three days this week. These students from Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff Davis parishes heard from industry experts at the three-day learning event about the many career opportunities available in the construction industry. These students witnessed or experienced hands-on exposure to welding, a crane simulator, heavy equipment, pipefitting, electrical, instrumentation and millwright. All in all, both of these events touched about every corner of our great state, and were great ways to showcase our industry, educational opportunities and Members. BRTC’S STATEWIDE RECOGNITION & MORE

BY KELLY CARPENTER, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) released the Course Choice Provider Evaluation on September 5. The ABC Training Center received an overall score of 8 (the highest achievement with the LDOE)! Congratulations to Kacie Blanchard, Associate Director of Workforce Development for a job well done. Kacie has done a remarkable job maintaining accurate records and submitting weekly reports to school districts as well as the state department. The success of the program has hinged on the joint effort of the participating schools, member contractors and staff to maintain high academic achievement. The dedication will continue to keep the program in good standing and ensure the expectations required by the LDOE are met daily. The training would not be successful without the instructors and their commitment to continuing to focus on improving the quality of training provided for all students. It’s programs like these that will help increase the knowledge and awareness of the career opportunities in the construction industry. Thanks again to everyone for all the hard work to keep the ABC Training Center achieving outstanding performance. Danielle Birney, David Helveston and Kelly Carpenter met with the River Parishes Community College (RPCC) team on August 30 regarding students enrolling for college credits. ABC and RPCC are working on the details and planning to run a select group of students through the quick check for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA). This will help to determine how many qualify for Pell Grants, student loans, etc. RPCC is also in the process of determining alignment to ABC’s pipefitting program as a pilot for college credit. The annual Program Partners Signing Day took place on September 11 at the ABC Training Center with representatives from 20 area high schools participating. The signing day reaffirms 25

the commitment between contractors and local schools to develop the next generation of craft workers. The two entities sign agreements that outline the duties of the contractor and the instructor regarding the alignment of the industry needs so that students are career-ready upon high school graduation. The Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance, Inc. (GBRIA) Craft Workforce Development Awards was held on September 13 at the Renaissance Hotel. This awards program was designed to promote best practices to improve the skills and retention of craft personnel. The Baton Rouge Training Center was nominated by nine contractors and received a Workforce Development Award for our continuous efforts to improve the skills gap and provide training to individuals looking for a rewarding career in industry. The Pelican Chapter was recognized along with other secondary and post-secondary institutions for its achievements in workforce development. The Baton Rouge Training Center hosted another round of skills upgrade courses in Electrical, Millwright and Pipefitting. The upgrade classes continue to be advantageous to the students. Additional training in Rigging and Hydroblasting were offered in August. These programs are geared to help the students with additional training needed to achieve the cut score on the NCCER assessment. We recently hosted Build Your Future at Lamar Dixon. We saw some schools attend that have not participated in the past. It was exciting to see this unfold and the contractors and staff hosted 1,000 plus students. The ABC Southwest Training Center welcomes the Fall as we continue to train skilled craft workers each and every day. Our enrollment, which consist of on-campus and satellite training, currently sits at 920 total students. The accelerated Heavy Equipment class completed training September 13, and the accelerated Welding and Electrical classes are still in session. The night classes consisting of Millwright, Pipefitting, CSST, Heavy Equipment, Electrical, Instrumentation, Core, and Welding are about halfway through the semester. The 2018 Fall Semester is going along strong and will wrap on December 20.

Dual enrollment classes are off to a fantastic start for the 2018-2019 high school year. ABC SWTC is currently training 181 Course Choice students among 13 Welding classes and a newly added Pipefitting class at South Beau High. We are actively pursuing opportunities to increase dual enrollment training by offering craft classes in new locations. ABC is very excited to offer industry craft training to students at the high school level. This provides the younger generation with the opportunity to obtain the necessary skills needed for careers in the construction industry. The ABC SWTC hosted a Build Your Future event designed to promote industry training and careers in construction to high school students. Over recent months, Congressional Democrats have played politics with a humanitarian and national security crisis. Instead of seeking constructive dialogue to solve the problems at our southern border, the Left have used the situation to attack President Trump. This failure to work with Republicans has escalated recently into complete disregard for the rule of law and those who protect and serve. In order to address the problem, we must understand how it arose. The Obama catch-and-release policy, which allowed criminals to be freed from detention while they are involved in removal proceedings, gave notice to all potential illegal aliens that kids would provide get-out-of-jail-free cards. After being released from custody - the large majority disappear throughout our county and never return to court, unless they are arrested again for committing another crime.

But instead of supporting the DOJ’s efforts to amend the Flores settlement agreement or introducing bills to address the problem, Congressional Democrats have called for the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). You read that correctly: the Left wants to do away with an agency that, in just the 2017 fiscal year, arrested more than 127,000 illegal aliens with criminal charges or convictions and seized almost 1 million pounds of narcotics – including thousands of pounds of the deadly drugs fueling our opioid crisis.

Making matters worse were the numerous state and local jurisdictions that, in contravention of federal law, provided sanctuary to criminal illegals despite the fact that it has been settled since 1819 that a state cannot actively undermine the execution of federal law or discriminate against the federal government.

In their pursuit of open borders – the Left wants to eliminate a government agency that goes after those who have participated in war crimes, genocide, torture, or violations of religious freedoms. The shortage of skilled craft workers in Louisiana is hindering our state’s workforce and economic potential. Almost no one in industry would argue with you on that point, so the Pelican Chapter is working to fix this stigma towards the industry by strengthening the career pathways that high school students can pursue in construction and manufacturing. One way to tackle this challenge head on is to bring together the job creators and the teachers. Last month, ABC Pelican held Program Partners Signing Day by hosting representatives from 47 Louisiana high schools in 16 school districts and more than a dozen ABC Pelican member companies to reinforce their commitment to develop the next generation of craft workers. The local educators and business leaders at Signing Day were committed to educating and providing the necessary resources to entry-level craft workers in our state. Signing this yearly agreement re-affirmed an already strong relationship in developing the next generation of craft workers. Educators “signed” to align their teaching materials to meet industry demands for an entry-level craft worker and ABC Pelican Members “signed” to provide the tools, materials, and personnel required to meet those goals. Our annual Fall golf tournament is always a tap in. Held at the University Club Golf Course on the morning and afternoon of Monday, September 24, this year’s annual event hosted nearly 130 of our members and their guests for the two-man scramble style tournament. The temperature certainly did not indicate that we were officially in to the Fall season, but our participants were total champs in the heat and did not let it affect their aim or backswing. Even a late-afternoon rain did not slow down those follow through’s! Year after year, this tournament is one of our best events, all thanks to the top-notch competition, beautiful course and delicious cuisine. This year’s winning team was Casey Tanner and Joe Martin, guests of Repcon Inc. Their prize was not only an impressive trophy and bragging rights, but also custom-made Marucci Sports Baseball Bats. The runners up were players from Performance Contractors and Prime Occupational Medicine. Safety must be a top priority in the workplace, which is why one of our core missions here at ABC Pelican is to educate our members on best practices in creating the safest work environment. We recently hosted our annual Safety Seminar at our training center, and we were thrilled a room full of our members attended to listen to the tips given by presenters. We are thankful that Jacobs, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Primoris, DeWalt and MSA gave informative presentations on topics such as safety technologies, silica containment and 100% tie off systems. Groupthink is a good way to share rules and safeguards to ensure that each employee is working safely on any and every job site. The safety seminar was complete with breakfast, provided by Ringer Gloves, and lunch provided by PSS Industrial Group. We also want to thank Matt Flynn, former LSU quarterback and member of the Green Bay Packers, for sharing his inspiration behind his company, MyHy, and the importance of staying hydrated on the job site and in the office.

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION WITH SENATOR BILL CASSIDY AUGUST 10, BATON ROUGE Senator Bill Cassidy recently joined a roundtable discussion with our members at ABC Pelican. The Senator had reached out to us, requesting feedback from those in the construction industry about the impacts of federal legislation, executive orders, appointments, and regulations; specifically, how those policies are helping or hurting Louisiana industry. The candid conversation in the room was truly meaningful. The Senator began the discussion by providing our members an update from Washington, D.C., including his vote for the SCOTUS nominee, the implications of the upcoming midterms, and his take on the Trump economy. The floor then opened up to our members to ask questions. They discussed our broken tax code, including charitable tax donations and

re-writing our tax code, prison reform, workforce development, including the need to change taxable per diem for workers, and the concern that tariffs are creating for mega projects and potential projects here in Louisiana. They also discussed the probably of a national gas tax and what that would look like throughout Louisiana. Infrastructure and the safeness of our roads and bridges were also discussed at length. As the voice of the merit shop, our members had the Senator’s ear during the candid roundtable conversation. He vocalized his continual support for our mission and goals.

SOUTHWEST FALL MIXER SEPTEMBER 6, LAKE CHARLES

With more than 250 guests in attendance, our football-themed Southwest Fall Mixer was better than a pick six! On Thursday, September 6, ABC Pelican members and their guests arrived dressed in their favorite team colors; we saw a good bit of purple, gold and black in the room (Who Dat and Geaux Tigers!). Members, guests, and personnel from the local plants all networked together and watched the first game of the NFL regular season on the big screens [after the rain delay ended!], played tailgating games likes washers and corn hole, and enjoyed some great food and drinks in the grand ballroom of the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Lake Charles. Attendees got their head in the game by

vying for some top-notch tailgating prizes like a grill, a griddle, an LSU tent, an ice chest, chairs, a table and even some tailgating food and drink. CLOSING THE SKILLED WORKFORCE GAP BY: DAVID HELVESTON, PELICAN CHAPTER, ABC

You and I know that there is no better time to join the construction industry than right now. We also know that we must do a better job at educating the next generation about the opportunities available for them in the construction industry. As we recognize Careers in Construction Month this October, the team at ABC Pelican and many of our member companies have been hard at work getting the word out to the future employees of our industry.

There are currently an estimated 500,000 open construction positions in the United States. With a significant part of the construction workforce nearing retirement, ABC is committed to recruiting and training the next generation of workers to close this workforce and skills gap. One of the highlights of our year was partnering with many of you to host two Build Your

Future Day events at Lamar Dixon and at our Westlake Training Center. More than 50 local high schools from about 20 parishes scheduled half-day field trips for more one thousand students to learn about the many career pathways available for them in the construction industry. If you participated or attended any of these rewarding events, I appreciate your efforts. Thanks to the months of planning, craft training demonstrations, equipment, hands-on experiences, great food, and quality music, the energy at both events was truly unmatched. High school students were inspired to consider new careers and education options. Local media coverage further amplified our message of opportunity in the construction industry.

As representatives from our member companies met with high school students at Build Your Future Day, they explained that a career as a construction craft professional does not and challenges workers require a four-year college to constantly hone degree.
