Design Thesis Pudu Community Market Pudu
In context, Pudu area has experienced slower pace development in term of commercial development compared to other commercial area surround it even though the diversity and socio activities are still there but yet not like it used to be. At this state, the existing society of Pudu which relied on commercial industry faced difficulties in sustaining the survival rate of commerce in that area. In which, due to the development, a lot of changes occurred and affects the residents in the area. Resulting in much-unwanted migration to the outskirts of the city, leaving Pudu to be a heartless city where only monotonous business activities are done only throughout the day. The market becomes prominent to our country as it is functioned as a place where the community can obtain their needs and goods and also act as a gathering space and nodes. The market has become a common building that which could be found in the most residential area in Malaysia. In coherent with the vast development that the City hall is imposing, how do we develop the city simultaneously without hurting the community within it. I feel the importance of commercial industry for the community in Pudu areas specifically, where the fact that market has been the centre of trading, social meeting platform and exchange things. Market typology plays a huge role in providing the needs of the community. Hence, the design thesis proposes a public community facilities (public community market), providing trade facility and community spaces under one roof.
Pudu known as a place which rich in cultural diversity and its neigbourhood. Pudu has been one of the district in the central planning area in the early development of KL city center. However, the growth of Pudu seems to be not fully formed compared to other new growth area in major sub centres around KL. In context, Pudu has experienced slower pace of development in term of commercial development compared to other commercial area surround it eventhough the diversity and socio activities are still there but yet not like it once used to be. At this state, the existing society of Pudu which relied on commercial industry faced difficulties in sustaining the surival rate of commerce in that area. In which, due to the development, a lot of changes occurred and affects the residents in the area. Resulting in many unwanted migration to the outskirts of the city, leaving Pudu to be a heartless city where only monotonous business activities is done only throughout the day. In coherent with the vast development that the City hall is imposing, how do we develop the city simultaneously without hurting the community within it?
Located in highly commercialized and evolving city area and one of district in the central planning area in the early development of KL city centre. Since then, Pudu has remained the same for the past 50 years and experienced slower pace of development compared to other commercial district around it. Transit Oriented Development is implementing in the city centre following by the Sg. Buloh- Kajang MRT Line where all sites nearby transits are developing to become mixed use development (high-rise offices, shopping malls, hotels and middle-end residential). However, this is not the best solution to place the highly commercial components near to a densely populated area mostly occupied by the lower income group in Pudu. The development should be sensitive to the resident’s need rather than having another “money making” development.

DBKL is projecting a decrease in population in Pudu area, and this will lead to more empty shop houses due to decrease in population. However, DBKL is looking into developing the red light district (San Peng) to higher density housing area in near future.
The development that growth rapidly and spontaneous disrupt the urban character in the Pudu area which lead to threaten the market as a community spaces. Apart from the fact that market has been a centre of trading where business process was occur, where people meet up and exchange things it play a big role in providing community needs. However, two of the important community market in Pudu area is now posed to a threats. • Pasar Jalan Merlimau Relocation project of Pasar Jalan Merlimau already took placed and waiting to be completed to the new location. • Pasar Pudu There been a news on a project proposal to redevelop/renewal Pasar Pudu by DBKL but yet still in early planning.

The project explores the potential of the current demands and needs of the public market that aiming to address the need for communityintegrated approach and better trading facility within the urban fabric, by introducing a new typology of the public market to reactivate the area.
The thesis focuses on enhancing the environment for well-designed public market by tapping into the new forms of commercial and economic interaction of community- based design. Wet and food market as the main program for the whole system while retails and offices spaces become part of the commercial programmes that were integrated into the building in creating a new typology of a community-based market. Thus, provide the necessary environment for socio activities to takes place in daily lives in the city and also part of the solution in providing a public space for the community.
This idea looks at ways to connect a market to city services and facilities, maintaining their contact to other citizens and reducing the social marginality. Through research, programs that are to be implemented can be divided into three as follow :
Few criteria listed by DBKL that should be concern and considered for planning strategies in Kuala Lumpur : • Cost of the land • Land use • Land utilization • Integrated Facilities/Building • Community Based
Pudu known as a place neighborhood. Throughout Pudu. The idea is to inject past 50 years and how it
that rich in cultural and diversity of its time, various industry started growing in a program that Pudu has become for the actually become a part of the city centre.
Market were traditionally part of the main system of open spaces of cities and towns. With new development areas, provision should also be ideally made for such public spaces. The market layout should not be disorienting and it is thus necessary to arrange the circulation system so that there is a hierarchy of spaces, with at least one major space, which might be the main market square or street, off which there are minor spaces serving other functions. To study the efficiency of consumer movement in relation with market design layout, three role of a behavior and the actions were set up.
decision for a planned route to get the desired product
choose a direction for the next move and avoiding any collision
decide the target and desired product to purchase
Figure: The procedure
Throughout the experiment, the result show that the best market stall layout design is the one with adequate space for two-way traffic, yields product variety and congregation of mixed products helps facilitate purchasing, saves consumer’s time, and encourages impulse buying.
Pasar Pudu is located in the neighbourhood centre of Pudu. The location is near to the residential area and lrt Pudu, which makes the market accessible easily by the public. This market consist of a indoor market and a street market and contained a total number of 1605 hawkers. It has been a significant to Pudu and become favourite marketplace among the Pudu resident as well as people who lived outside Pudu since it was started as a market. The stall is arranged in linear pattern along the street, with no clear separation on wet and dry zoning, while the indoor market is in linear zoning. The meat stalls is located at the middle part of the street, followed by the vegetable, fruits stall on both end. On the other hand, the indoor market stall is arranged in linear zoning with a clear separation of wet and dry zoning.
WHAT MAKES PUDU MARKET IS A SUCCESSFUL PUBLIC MARKET
Pudu is situated strategically in the city centre Zoning Plan of Kuala Lumpur and zoned for mixed-use industry & Industry commercial development. It is intended to promote clustering of similar activitie incorporating compatible and non-polluting industrial activities with support services such as storage, distributive trade, and service industries. This zone is predominantly industrial with maximum 30% commercial use. Proposed site sits on existing car park area and bounded by few well known street such as Jalan Pudu, Jalan Sungai Besi and Jalan San Peng. • The site is located at Jalan San Peng, Pudu, Kuala Lumpur • There are Pudu LRT Station adjacent to the site which can act as landmark to the site • Many issues that can be connected to trade problems • Total area of proposed site is approximately 4.77 acre. From the context, the proposed site deemed most suitable for the idea to happen. Shall be located within the more highly accessible portion, preferably within the Transit Planning Zones and along major public transport routes and pedestrian routes.

In response to the site's potential and the historical side of Pudu that once known as the city hub in supporting the city centre, the project also explores the idea of introducing mixing a series of corresponding programmes of small-scale food production (growing, processing, trading and living) to adjust and enhance the urban fabric. Thus, not only interconnect the community with the city, but also creating a relationship with the place and its ecological, economical, and architectural particularly. The integration of all different commerce approach under one building will allow for all traders to receive the appropriate platform based on their needs. Thus, it can help in the effectiveness of the industry, treating architecture as part of the solution.

The floor graded toward waste trap, so that during cleaning/ washing water do not flow into the surrounding apron (Public circulation). Common service coridor was provided to acess into the back of each stall. The floor level of the stall and passageway were designed such that to ease water movement during washing, and water do not enter the stall and vice versa. A refuse room is provided separately at ground level near to the TNB substation zone for the local authority to take away. This eliminates foul smell that comes from the refuse chamber as it is separate. The design of the external refuse chamber is according to the local authority requirement. For maintenance wise, the internal wall of refuse chamber was enclosed by a double leaves louvered door. The purpose of using the louvered door is to allow the natural ventilation inside the room. Moreover, it can prevent the rubbish to get musty.

Office Complex Imbi
It is near to the Berjaya Time Square Complex, Plaza Imbi and Bukit Bintang Plaza and Several Hotels. This office complex being speculative with multi-tendency usage for each floor compromises office tower, auditorium, some supporting retail outlets and multi-storey basement car parks. This design of this building requires the student’s understanding of the site, urban context, architectural history and development of Jalan Imbi and Bukit Bintang in particularly the social and commercial aspects.

Travellers Hotel Chow Kit
" How can you design spaces of transaction which facilitate the possibility of enhanced translability of people's sentiments, their perspectives, their affect, their ways of seeing things?" This project is about to design a travelers hotel for the travelers/tourist. We were given an opportunity to design a hotel for the travelers people. The hotel design itself, are more focusing to comfortable place to stay overnight rather than the high class ones as the new generation of travelers are not necessarily looking for a hotel experience. Plus those travelers are looking for a limited to basics and done well hotel. In addition, nowdays comfortable hotel is not considered luxury anymore. Thus, the concept of budget hotels is use for this project. It is a project that required a student to be able to get know the issue of it (intention to drive your idea, what actually you want to do with this project), get to understand the context of the site itself (everything about places, e.g Chow Kit) and how to deal with it (what is the solution of everything). In general, the idea is about to show and give the sense ot city to those travelers. What can be share and told about to them about a city. The destination. And what can we offer to them. In details, I want to give an experience to them of what the city is? What is Chow Kit? The old and the new one? The people, the activities, the business, the life, tangible and intangible element in Chow Kit. I want to reinact and reinvoke the sense of that city of Chow Kit in my hotel. The element of the city. What is hidden and the story behind it. And at the end what can 'it' (a city) can offer to the travelers?
Chow Kit Kita is a community mapping project by teens, for teens of Chow Kit. Feel attracted and inspired by this project on how to deal with the things that being forgotten and mapping out everything about Chow Kit. To show what is all about. From people to people

The basic unit of social development. It is a space of coexistence between humans. Human life is often inseparable from the development community. In general, Chow Kit’s society have its own culture, lifestyle, environment and quality materials to show what is all about.
