Manhattan sports center MANHATTANCALL competition by Archicontest In collaboration with: Waleed Sherif

MANHATTAN, One of the world’s economic and adminstrative centers which led people to have faster base of life by which people tend to spend more time indoors than outdoors. East Harlem, Known for its ethic variety of Latino communities, chinese community and some italian who didn’t leave east harlem , That it has historically suffered from many social issues ,Such as a high crime rate ,drug abuse homelessness and etc... However since 2016 east harlem underwent many gentrification, So on the otherhand it was our duty to make a sport center which has a multipurpose, a place that can bring people together and act as a colletive zone for the people with activities, galliers ,conferences , concert hall and so on....

32

33

34

35

The projects context is made up of manhattan’s industrial style buildings of steel, brick and glass. we wanted to have integration between the building and area context but also wanted to look different to attract the audience, so we used the same industrial style with organic lines to be in contrast from the vertical & horizontal surroundings of Manhattan

36

37

38

The project approach is motivating people to engage in sports Through exposure where the building is transparent for those passing by. where at the beggining they will get attracted watching the activity inside ,Then they will engage as by nature humans are social beings where studies has found that people listen to good news more than bad news so by showing them the increase of the rates of people who excercise this will get them motivated to get engaged.

Rediscovering Nile Delta – Hands on Earth and Reed El-Shakhlouba urban analysis & design build

Location: El-Shakhlouba, Kafr el Sheikh, Egypt.

Site: The chosen site was located at the edge of the village between residential houses and large fish breeding basins. Being on the edge of the village was an opportunity to frame a beautiful view of the typical Nile Delta landscape which is dominated by water. As visible on the map the site is located within a larger space in the exsiting urban fabric.

- The design group followed the idea of introducing a structure or built landscape of different leveled blocks as a children play ground on the one hand and a shaded seating area for the older members of the community on the other. 40

41

The overarching idea was to create an intervention reflecting the community needs using local materials. The basis for this idea has started with some conversations with the kids who were curiously visiting the site. As shown in the sketches this block landscape is complemented by a roof structure to provide shading for the users.

42

Materials: Mud/Clay:

Reed:

Bamboo:

The main material the We were working with was mud/clay. In the context of the workshop it was decided to work with manufactured unburnt mud bricks, which are environmental friendly ever since, once broken they are basically soil that can go back on a field.

The second material identified being naturally from the region was the abundantly avaliable reed. Concerning its qualities the idea was to use it as material for screens, shading elements and/ or floor mats as it is also used by locals. In the end it was fairly used as part of the roof.

Bamboo had not been part of the original plans but since it was discovered during the workshop as a very popular material around the lake ElBorollos, where rods are mainly used as a raft type “tool” to move the fishing boats across the lake. The Bamboo proved to be a very integrative part of the roof.

Zamalek Arts Festival Re-Think Mohamed Thaqeb St. proposal

Great public spaces are those places where celebrations are held, social and economic exchanges occur, friends run into each other, and cultures mix. They are the “front porches” of our public institutions – libraries, field houses, schools – where we interact with each other and government. When theses spaces work well, they serve as the stage for our public lives.

46

Turning a VEHICULES ROAD into a PUBLIC SPACE found that to be successful, it generally must share the following four qualities: It is accessible; people are engaged in activities there; the space is comfortable and has a good image; and finally, it is a sociable place: one where people meet each other and take people when they come to visit.
