45th Anniversary of our beloved parish ■ THE REVEREND PETER DELVIZIS The following message was delivered by Fr. Peter at the 45th Anniversary Sapphire Luncheon held on October 2, 2011.

Y

our Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos, our shepherd and hierarch; beloved Reverend Father Alexander [Leondis] and Father Dimitrios [Antokas] who served this parish with much love, dedication and distinction; our Deacons in Christ; Beloved Presvyteres; honorable Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate; dear brothers and sisters in the Lord:

Philippians Chapter Four says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say rejoice!” Today is a tremendous day to rejoice because the Lord has deemed this day the 45th Anniversary of our beloved parish. I would be remiss if I did not thank the founders, who demonstrated their faith in the Lord and built this magnificent temple dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Because of them, we celebrate, rejoice and break bread together this afternoon. Additionally, I extend my thanks to the current Stewards of this parish. With your love, zeal and determination, together we continue to live, teach and project the mission of our Holy Orthodox Faith. Lastly, I wish to thank the many special donors who contributed to the renovation of the Narthex/Exonarthex.

These individuals, wishing to see but a mere glimpse of the grandeur and beauty of God’s heavenly kingdom in our world, offered to each of us and to their Lord and Saviour a most wonderful and treasured gift. With the completion of this project, our parish truly has been given a deeper and more majestic appearance. I opened by reciting a bit of Scripture: “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, rejoice!” This fourth verse in the fourth chapter of St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians continues in verse six saying, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God.” Think for a moment, how many times in the last 45 years were prayers and supplications and thanksgiving offered to Pag. 5

O

n Sunday, October 2, 2011, His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos made a pastoral visit to Holy Trinity in celebration of its 45th Anniversary. Additionally, many other events marked this auspicious day including: the dedication of the new mosaics & iconography; two members of the choir, Mary Vasilow & Kathyrn Athanasoulas, receiving honors; the tonsuring of four acolytes; and the elevation of Fr. Peter Delvizis to the rank of Protopresbyter. Included in this issue of The Promise are pictures capturing part of this day. Special thanks are extended to Costa Lymperopoulos, whose skill as a photographer give us all these images (pgs. 6 - 9). Thank you Cos for dedicating your talent to the church and for sharing these wonderful pictures. ^

PENNY PENFANIS

T

he Forty-fifth Anniversary of the first Divine Liturgy celebrated on Sunday, October 2, 1966 at Holy Trinity, Westfield NJ was commemorated on Sunday, October 2, 2011. His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos leading us in prayer, celebrated the Divine Liturgy together with Fr. Peter Delvizis, Fr. Alexander Leondis and Fr. Dimitrios Antokas, and also conducted the Dedication of the Narthex and Exonarthex, witnessed by the faithful from the Nave. Parishioners joined in fellowship in the Bouras Center, joyfully reconnecting and reminiscing over memories of the past 45 years. Parish Council President Ted Demetriou toasted all the generations who have built the foundations and looked to the future of our church. Angeliki Anderson, who traveled with her husband, Louis Anderson, from South Carolina, graced us with their presence and enlightened us with the history of the inception of Holy Trinity and honored the founders and their progeny for their love, dedication and sacrifices that have culminated in the Crown Jewel that is Holy Trinity. Fr. Peter, Fr. Alexander and His Eminence reflected on the spiritual strength of the community from its beginnings that has been resolute and dynamic as the parish has grown.

graciously donated wine and champagne, enjoyed by the adults. Peter Verenes’ unique artistry produced the handsome and distinctive logo and invitations for the Sapphire Events. Fr. Alexander and Peter Verenes developed a magnificent program detailing the afternoon’s celebration. Angie Hillier Ladas kindly reproduced exceptional posters. The Importance of Stewardship See the World as God’s Gift to You

THEODORE DEMETRIOU, PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT

W

e come to church to see God’s many blessings in our lives. What is your response to His gifts? In gratitude and thanksgiving, you offer your time, talent, and treasure in proportion to what you have been given. However, you will never overcome God’s generosity. In the early Church, every person coming to the gathering of the Church brought everything they could spare for the needs of the Church. They provided for the sustenance of the clergy, widows, and orphans; for helping the poor; and for all the good works of the Church. This is the Church that we as Orthodox Christians claim to be. We are able to fulfill God’s mission for the Church only to the extent that we support it. We do this by our physical, spiritual, and financial support. Giving to the Church is an opportunity—an opportunity to examine our priorities and

values. Come and see what we can do together with your support. This also means extending yourself. Committing. Serving. Be present in church. Participate in the secular and religious activities of our church. Some 25 years ago, Holy Trinity left the ‘dues’ system for our ‘stewardship’ method of financial support for our church. This allowed for a true Christian process of allowing those who were not as blessed financially, to give less than those with greater resources. Most of you have responded with true Christian spirit. But let me highlight one simple fact: in the last 25 years, that one-dollar bill that goes into the candle tray has lost half of its purchasing value. Meanwhile, the services, programs, and outreach of our church have expanded. For this reason, I call on you to be as generous as your Christian spirit allows you to be for 2012 ^

utreach is one of the most important ministries at Holy Trinity. Your Christian philanthropy helps touch the lives of so many. The Outreach Corner found in this issue of The Promise gives a quick glimpse of your Christian philanthropy at work. Recently, we have: • Donated $1,000 to support Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF), a national ministry for university students. • Donated $5,000 through the Holy Trinity Golf Classic to various national and local charities, including Camp Good Shepherd, the Metropolis of New Jersey Summer Camp. • Raised funds to support efforts to assist victims of Hurricane Irene. • Raised awareness of Lainie’s Angels and funds to support its mission. • Collected shoes for orphans, and clothing and supplies for the homeless. Everyone is encouraged to get involved in helping those in need. Please continue to support the many wonderful outreach programs at Holy Trinity. Your participation changes lives for the better.

CAREER DAY In June, the AHEPA sponsored Holy Trinity’s first Career Day, designed to more formally guide our youth and young adults in their educational and career paths. A panel of Chuck Anastasiou, Jim and Stefanie Gianakis, Maggie Stavrianides, and Peter Tarhanides shared its advice and experience with dozens of interested members of our youth programs, recent alumni and parents. The discussion centered on the following topics: Overview of the Corporate Hiring Process; Academic and Career Planning; Allowing Your Faith to Guide Your Career; Networking – In Person and Online; and Navigating the Changing Work Environment. We are working on new programs for 2011-2012 that will target the college admissions process, resume writing, interview skills, job and internship opportunities, mentor relationships, and so much more! We are also looking to expand the nature and scope of the series to assist adults in our community who are at a crossroads in their careers and to reach out to neighboring churches and communities. If you have an interest in participating in the program and/or have ideas for future presentation topics, please let us know! ^

Pag. 1 - 45th Anniversary of our beloved parish God from the faithful at Holy Trinity? Whatever the number may be, it must be staggering. Imagine how many prayers you yourself have offered inside the sanctuary. This number might be beyond counting and perhaps beyond memory. Prayer to God continues at Holy Trinity. Year after year, month after month, Sunday after Sunday, day after day, the prayers of the faithful, of you and of your family flow from your lips and from your mind, from your heart and from your very being to ascend heavenward to rest at the very throne of God. So the next time you are in church do me a favor. As you pray, watch the incense as it billows upward. As it rises to reach the icon of the Pantocrator in the dome, think of the incense as your sweet prayers meeting Christ. Prayer is that which connects us to God and therefore it is the main function of the Church and the great privilege of a Christian. I am pretty sure that for 45 years - 16,426 continuous days - prayers have been offered by the faithful of Holy Trinity. Since the beginning and founding of this church, prayers have not ceased. Every single day, in this period of time, our prayers have ascended from within the sanctuary to meet Christ. There are a variety of reasons why a prayer is offered. It can be for a joyous occasion such as a baptism or wedding or to express thanks to God for a blessing bestowed upon yourself or on your family. A prayer is also offered in times of sorrow or in a crisis such as in a funeral or natural disaster. As a parish priest who is here most every day, I am astonished at the number of people who walk into the church just to offer a humble prayer before the Lord. To witness this is a testimony of belief and trust in God. In this simple act, I can see faith that is alive. When a candle is lit and God’s holy name is invoked, faith rests at that moment in the tremendous power of God for Him to help direct their lives; perhaps to touch it and heal it; to restore physical or spiritual health; for vigor; for wisdom; for joy; for peace and inner concord of soul; for a family member; for a relationship with another; for strength; for mercy; for forgiveness; or just to make life a little bit better. A person, alone, in the peaceful confides of the church offering a silent prayer is a tremendous and overwhelming sight to behold. This is a visible image of faith. To be that person, alone, in a house of prayer offering his or her life to

God -surrendering it to Him - shows the soul’s willingness to trust and to accept God’s tender loving care. This that I describe happens on a daily basis. What can be better, more dynamic, fulfi lling, and lifealtering than the faithful connected to one another in the prayers of the Divine Liturgy approaching God? Here the Church Militant and the Church Triumphant celebrate together in the awesome heavenly banquet and mystical supper. Through this act of the Church, we unite ourselves to one another and to God and through this find salvation. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we are people of prayer and we thank our Lord for giving us such a beautiful church – a place where our faith is engaged, a place where our hearts open to the mysteries of God. For many in this room, Holy Trinity has been their home for many years. For some, they were born and baptized here, attended Sunday School and participated in GOYA. For others, they were married here or they buried family members here. With all, they found Holy Trinity to be a place to help bear their burdens and to increase their faith. Our parish is a place that seeks to instill virtue and purity in their lives. In other words, it is a place that illumines the soul and makes us a better Christian. From the past, we now plot a course into the future, and pray that the Lord will be continually with us blessing and guiding our steps forward. As I began with the reading from Philippians Chapter Four, I will also close with Philippians Chapter Four. I want to finish with these words for they are magnificent words that speak of the goodness that comes from prayerful reflection. They demonstrate a spirit that is found in our parish and although I can only speak personally about the last seven years, I can gather that for 45 years the prayers of the faithful have been directed to the higher things - toward the divine illumination found in Christ Jesus. I quote: “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.” Amen. †Fr. Peter ^

St. Basil the Great: “Love Can Not Be Taught” ■

ST. BASIL THE GREAT

L

ove for God cannot be taught. No one taught us how to enjoy the light or to desire life, nor does anyone else teach us to love our parents or those who raised us.

Similarly, knowledge of divine love does not come from outside, it is innately within. At the same time when man was composed, a seminal reasoning was deposited in us, which has by itself the causes of appropriating love... Only that which is good is considered properly beautiful and lovable. God is good. If we love that which is good, we therefore must love God. To be alienated and to depart from God is unbearable, something that is even more unbearable than the fire of hell. - From The Long Rules, Rule 2 ^ The Promise ^ November 2011 ^ Volume 35, Issue 8

Philoptochos ■ AVI KIRIAKATIS, PRESIDENT

To aid the poor, the aged, the hungry, the needy, and the sick through charitable works performed with discretion, courtesy, and kindness. From its inception, Philoptochos has exemplified Christian stewardship in nearly every area. Visiting and caring for the sick and elderly – providing for the poor and needy – reaching out to heal the infirmities of our changing society – giving moral support to families torn apart – these are only a few of examples of our Christian ministry of love.

Annual Philoptochos Retreat Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, N.Y. – Saturday, November 12, 2011 - 9:00 AM It is fitting that we spend a day of spiritual renewal among the beautiful surroundings of Saint Basil Academy. In addition to sharing a rich liturgical and spiritual experience, this program will help us keep in touch with reverend Father Constantine Sitaras and the wonderful children and staff of the Academy. While we share continued pride in the founding of Saint Basil by our beloved Philoptochos, our visit will allow us to draw inspiration from one another, as we enjoy the advancement made possible by our faithful support and prayers. Luncheon will be served at Saint Basil Retreat; $25.00 donation per person is

suggested. Our Ladies Philoptochos will present their annual donation to Father Sitaras. Advance notice is necessary and all participants’ checks should be made payable to “Saint Basil Academy.” If we get enough interest at Holy Trinity we can rent a bus for an additional $10.00 per person and attend this uplifting and inspiring event. If interested, please sign up at Fellowship hour.

n September, TOTS welcomed back old friends and made some new friends as new families joined our group. The children (and Moms) were happy to be together again after the summer break. They worked on apple crafts and paintings. We have plenty of fall crafts planned for the group. The children also enjoy lighting their candles in the Narthex and participating in a brief chat in the church with Father Peter. TOTS is open to all Holy Trinity families with toddlers and preschool children. We have three more meetings scheduled for this year- November 9th and 30th and December 14th. In general our meetings are twice a month on Wednesdays during the school year (September to June). For more information, please contact Joanne Paras, (908)322-3166, or Jenny Stellakis, (908)233-2321. ^

ive choir members attended the annual conference of the Eastern Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians hosted by the Annunciation Cathedral in Baltimore, MD from October 6 to October 10, 2011. From Holy Trinity the attendees were Kathryn Athanasoulas, Connie Baboukis, Stacy Carumpalos, Miriam Kotsonis and Louis Martin. From Thursday evening to Saturday evening, the beautiful Steven Cardiasmenos Liturgy conducted by Nicholas Kyrus of Alexandria, VA was rehearsed. Each year this conference is hosted by a different parish of the Metropolis.

Kathryn Athanasoulas, Connie Baboukis, Stacy Carumpalos, Miriam Kotsonis and Louis Martin.

His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos was the celebrant for Sunday’s Divine Liturgy and always renews his dedication and support to choirs, psalti and all who help with the music ministry. It is always a treat for the host parish to have this large group of dedicated choir members present a liturgy in their community. We had 86 beautiful singers this year. Next year the host may be in New Jersey. When the decision is made official, we will announce it and perhaps many of you can come to hear it. ^

For the eager religious student, our September feature, the Orthodox Study Bible, Old and New Testament version, is more valuable than all the glittering gems the earth has to offer. We still have many copies of this Bible available for the surprisingly low price of $32. Come and browse our variety of religious and cultural items, including icons to inspire your prayers, books and CDs, as well as books for children. If you don’t see what you want, we can order it for you: when you support the Book Store, you support our Church.. ^
