Be a part of travel that changes lives.

Make a deeper local connection on your next journey with a visit to an Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy project.

“In just the past few years, travellers introduced to our AKP-supported projects during their journeys helped improve the lives of more than 125,000 men, women and children worldwide through donations to over 45 programs in 24 countries. That’s the impact that travel can make.”

Building on a Legacy of Partnership

Established in 1982, A&K Philanthropy (AKP) is dedicated to giving back to the vibrant environments and communities we are so privileged to explore. As part of our ongoing mission, AKP partners with local communities to improve education, conservation, health care and enterprise with over 45 projects spanning seven continents — a philanthropic commitment unequalled in the travel industry.

Experience an AKP Project Firsthand

A number of our Small Group Journeys offer opportunities to visit an AKP partner community, affording a wealth of moving experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Whether it’s celebrating a newly opened maternity ward or serving lunch to local schoolchildren, many of our guests experience their journey’s most impactful moments during these visits.

Sharing Genuine Perspectives

AKP employs a team of dedicated Philanthropy Coordinators stationed throughout the world, allowing for deeper, more meaningful cultural exchanges. AKP Coordinators facilitate the face-to-face interactions that reveal the true fabric of these communities, from speaking with a local teacher in a Kenyan village to witnessing the impact of clean water wells in rural Cambodia. If you’d like to meet one of our Philanthropy Coordinators and experience an AKP project firsthand, please contact A&K or your travel agent to arrange a site visit on your next journey. Case Study: Bwindi Bike Shop

AKP launched an Australian branch in 2018 which has already shipped more than 800 bikes to AKP Bike Shops in Africa, including shipments to a shop in Karatu in Tanzania, near the Ngorongoro Crater, and to the Bwindi Women’s Bicycle Enterprise in Uganda. The Bwindi Bike Shop employs five local women from the communities around the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to A&K’s Sanctuary Retreats Gorilla Forest Camp and to some of the world’s last remaining communities of mountain gorilla. The women in the Bike Shop have completed an extensive training programme to learn business skills and how to be bike mechanics, and they have used the shipments of used bikes and the shipping containers themselves to set up a village bike shop and tourism enterprise. The project has given these women the opportunity to earn a muchneeded income while also giving their community vital access to transportation. In addition to being a viable business model, the bike shop serves as a social enterprise, with a portion of the profits set aside to be used in charitable initiatives in the community; such as, fee sponsorship for orphaned students, investments in local health care and conservation initiatives. The Bwindi Bike Shop can be visited on the Uganda Post-Tour Extension to the Great Migration Safari in Style journey (page 24).
