Mae The Marxist in Heaven gan Hattie Naylor yn ddrama sy’n gwneud yn union yr hyn a ddywedir ar dudalen y teitl. Yn ddoniol, chwareus, pryfoclyd, perthnasol ac yn llawn sgwrs, dadleuon, duwdodau a dawnsio disgo, mae’r alegori fywiog galonogol hon yn disgleirio ei golau sanctaidd ar faterion byd-eang ac yn gofyn y cwestiynau amlycaf - pwy ydym a beth ydym yn gwneud i ni’n hunain?.....a beth ydych chi’n defnyddio i drin eich gwallt? Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s Home performances for the National Theatre Connections Festival. The Marxist in Heaven by Hattie Naylor is a play that does exactly what its title page says it’s going to do. Funny, playful, provocative, pertinent and jampacked with discourse, disputes, deities and disco dancing by the bucketful, this upbeat buoyant allegory shines its holy light on globalization and asks the salient questions – who are we and what are we doing to ourselves?.....and what conditioner do you use on your hair?

Mae ei waith wedi ymddangos mewn print yn y Sunday Times ers 45 mlynedd; fodd bynnag rhoddir bywyd newydd i’w gymeriadau a’i fydoedd digamsyniol ar y llwyfan a’r sgrîn: Fel Pygmalion ‘rwyf bob amser am roi bywyd i’m creadigaethau - i ddod â nhw oddi ar y dudalen a rhoi iddynt gnawd a gwaed, symudiad a drama. Mae’r arddangosfa hon, ar daith o’r Tŷ Darluniau, yn ystyried gwaith helaeth Scarfe ym meysydd animeiddiad a theatr a dylunio gwisgoedd. Nodweddir brasluniau rhagarweiniol, bordiau straeon, dyluniau setiau a gwisgoedd, ffotograffau, effemera, gwisgoedd, darnau set ac animeiddiad. Gerald Scarfe (b.1936) is the UK’s most prominent political cartoonist, known for his acerbic and uncompromising satire. Although his work has appeared in print in The Sunday Times for 50 years, his unmistakable style is given new life on stage and screen: Like Pygmalion I always want to bring my creations to life – to bring them off the page and give them flesh and blood, movement and drama. Paintings and drawings are two dimensional. To give them 3D rotundity one has to make a sculpture. To give them life one needs animation or an actor on stage. This touring exhibition from The House of Illustration explores Scarfe’s extensive work in animation and theatre and costume design. It features preliminary sketches, storyboards, costume and set designs, photographs, ephemera, costumes, set pieces and animation cels.

Anna Falcini: Rhwng y Plygiadau gwelir Gronynnau In Between the Folds are Particles 16 Mawrth - 11 Mai | 16 March – 11 May Mae corff cymhellol o waith newydd yn sôn am sgwrs barhaus rhwng yr artist cyfoes, Anna Falcini, a’r artist Gwen John (1876 -1939) o Gymru, trwy archif llythyrau a dyddiaduron drafft John yn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru, Aberystwyth a ddarganfuodd yn ystod ei chyfnod preswyl yma. Mae tameidiau o fywyd John yn rhwym o fewn y deunyddiau archifol;

y pethau sy’n ei gwneud yn agored i niwed, y pethau mae hi’n teimlo’n angerddol drostynt, ei hamheuon a’i phryderon artistig. Wrth i Falcini ddechrau ymchwilio i Bapurau Gwen John yn 2014, darganfuodd fod profiadau John fel artist benywaidd yn debyg iawn i’w rhai hi, er gwaethaf cyfnod o gan mlynedd rhyngddynt. Cefnogir yr arddangosfa gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a Chronfa Eaton. A compelling body of new work tells of an ongoing conversation between contemporary artist, Anna Falcini, and the late Welsh artist, Gwen John (1876 -1939), through the archive of John’s draft letters and diaries at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, discovered during Falcini’s residency here. Bound within the archival materials, are the particles of John’s life; her vulnerabilities, passions, doubts and artistic concerns. As Falcini began researching the Gwen John Papers in 2014, she discovered that John’s experiences as a female artist closely mirrored her own despite being divided by a century of time. This exhibition has been supported by the Arts Council of Wales and the Eaton Fund.

Meddwl Thinking 17 Ionawr - 16 Mawrth | 17 January – 16 March Gwaith ar y cyd yw Meddwl lle mae aelodau Cerflunwaith Cymru wedi cymryd elfen gyffredin, sef bocs sgwâr, a defnyddio’r gofod mewnol i greu gwaith celf gyda’r teitl ‘Meddwl’ (sy’n chwarae efo’r dywediad ‘meddwl tu allan i’r bocs’). Mae terfynau mewnol y bocs a chyfyngiadau’r dimensiynau wedi gorfodi’r cerflunwyr i weithio mewn tiriogaeth anghyfarwydd. Wedi dweud hynny, mae’r cerfluniau unigol yn adlewyrchu hunaniaeth ddigamsyniol yr artist ac mae’r ymatebion i, a’r dehongliadau o’r gofod, yr un mor amrywiol ag ydynt yn debyg. Mae pob darn yn gwahodd myfyrdod gofalus ac, wrth gwrs, yn gofyn y cwestiwn ‘Beth oeddent yn meddwl? Thinking is a joint collaboration in which participating members of Sculpture Cymru have taken a common element, a square box, in which they have used the internal space to create a work with the title ‘Thinking’(a mild pun around the expression ‘thinking outside the box’). The confines of the box interior and the constraints of dimensions have forced the sculptors to work in unfamiliar territory. That said, the individual sculptures have the unmistakeable identity of the artist and the reaction to, and the interpretation of the spaces is as varied as it is similar. All pieces invite thoughtful contemplation and, of course, pose the question ‘What were they thinking’? 51

Donald Pleasence yn 100 Donald Pleasence at 100 9 Tachwedd - 19 Ionawr 9 November – 19 January Mae 2019 yn nodi canmlwyddiant genedigaeth Donald Pleasence. O bosib yn un o’r actorion cymeriad Prydeinig mwyaf adnabyddus, ymddangosodd mewn bron 150 o ffilmiau. Mae’r arddangosfa hon ond yn crafu wyneb ei yrfa anhygoel. Trwy ddefnyddio cardiau lobi gwreiddiol, posteri sinema a phecynnau gwasg o lawer o wahanol wledydd, mae’r gwaith a arddangosir yma yn anelu at ddangos nid yn unig amrywiaeth eang ei ffilmiau, ond hefyd y ffaith bod Donald Pleasence yn enw y byddech yn ei weld mewn cynteddau sinema yn llythrennol ledled y byd. 2019 marks the centenary of the birth of Donald Pleasence. Possibly one of the most widely known British character actors, he had appeared in nearly 150 films. This exhibition merely scratches the surface of his incredible body of work. By utilising original lobby cards, cinema posters and press kits from many different countries, the work on display here aims to show not only the wide variety of films he would appear in, but also that Donald Pleasence was a name you would see in cinema foyers literally around the world.

Sefydlwyd y Grŵp Celf a Chyfeillgarwch yn wreiddiol fel grŵp celf ac iechyd peilot a noddwyd yn ystod y blynyddoedd cyntaf gan HAUL. ‘Rydym yn griw o unigolion sy’n cyfarfod unwaith yr wythnos i greu celf gyda’n gilydd. ‘Rydym yn gweithio mewn ffordd organig, ‘rydym yn ystyried syniadau, yn rhoi cynnig ar wahanol ddeunyddiau ac yn dod o hyd i ffyrdd newydd o weithio gydag hen ddeunyddiau. ‘Rydym yn cefnogi’n gilydd i wthio’r ffiniau ac i archwilio ein potensial. Mae’r arddangosfa hon yn ein dangos yn rhoi cynnig ar rywbeth newydd, yn gweithio gyda’n gilydd i greu gwaith celf, gwaith ar y gweill, yn datblygu teimlad o weithio fel hyn. The Art & Friendship Group originated as a pilot art and health group which was funded and supported for its first few years by HAUL. We are a group of individuals who meet once a week to make art together. The way we work is organic, we explore ideas, try out different materials and find new ways to work with old materials. We support each other to push ourselves out of our comfort zones to explore our potential. This exhibition shows us trying something new, working together to create an artwork, a work in progress, getting a feel for working this way. 53

Stuart Evans: Ysgolion Ladders 15 Chwefror - 1 Mai 15 February - 1 May Bu Mecsico Newydd yn f’ysbrydoli wrth imi ddringo ysgolion pren garw i ogofeydd a fu unwaith yn gartrefi i Americanwyr Cynhenid Pueblo yn Bandalier. Bu’r ogofeydd yn cynnig llety a chartref diogel i’r bobl hynny flynyddoedd maith yn ôl. ‘Roedd dringo’r ysgol yn beryglus. ‘Roedd yn eich codi o’r tir a pheryglon llawr y dyffryn. Mae ‘na eirth duon, nadredd rhuglen ac hyd yn oed llewod yn dal i fodoli yn y dirwedd honno. Yr hyn a brofodd i fod y peth mwyaf peryglus i’r Americanwyr Cynhenid oedd pobl eraill. Mae ysgolion yn symboleiddio codiad i le gwell, dolen rhwng y ddaear a’r awyr, dringo i fyny i le ysbrydol. Climbing rough wooden ladders to caves which were once homes to Pueblo Native Americans in Bandalier, New Mexico inspired me. The caves had provided a safe, secure protection and home to those people so long ago. Climbing the ladder was precarious. It lifted you from the earth and the dangers of the valley floor. There are still black bears, rattle-snakes and even lions in that landscape. What proved to be most dangerous for the Native Americans was other people. Ladders symbolise a rise to a better place, a link between earth and the sky, a climb up to a spiritual place. 54

Bu Ross Andrews a Hannah Walters yn ffocysu ar serameg hynod addurnedig Abertawe a Nantgarw yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg. Ystyriodd Elin Hughes waith gan Frances Richards (1869-1931), un o’r crochenwyr stiwdio arloesol cynharaf. Daeth Nathan Mullis o hyd i ysbrydoliaeth yn sgleiniau gweadol Reginald Wells (1877-1951). Ross Andrews and Hannah Walters focused on the richly decorated 19th Century Swansea and Nantgarw ceramics. Elin Hughes explored work by Frances Richards (1869-1931) one of the earliest pioneer studio potters. Nathan Mullis found inspiration in the textural glazes of Reginald Wells (1877-1951). Aberystwyth Arts Centre Community Theatre Company will be auditioning for roles in ‘Vanity Fair’, written by William Thackeray (1848) and adapted for the stage by Richard Hogger and Tom O’Malley. This is an exciting piece, with a large cast, set in the early 1800s, before and after the Battle of Waterloo (1815). The characters strive for their place in a world of glittering prizes, temptations, hopes, and rivalries. It is a humorous, biting satire on the vanity of human aspirations. The auditions are on Sunday 26th January 2020, 12-3pm, Rehearsal Room 1, the Arts Centre. If it is impossible for you to make that precise time, but want to be involved, please contact: takepart@aber. ac.uk. Bwriad yr unedau oedd datblygu swyddogaeth Canolfan y Celfyddydau fel man creadigol ar gyfer busnesau celf, asiantaethau datblygu’r celfyddydau, artistiad a chrefftwyr. Gwnaethpwyd y Prosiect Unedau Creadigol, sy’n werth £1 miliwn, yn bosibl yn sgil cefnogaeth gan Brifysgol Aberystwyth, Cronfa Loteri Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a Llywodraeth y Cynulliad. | The Creative Studios project was designed to develop Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s role as a creative hub for arts businesses, arts development agencies, artists and craft workers. The Creative Studios Project designed by Heatherwick Studio, worth £1 million, has been made possible by support from Aberystwyth University, the Arts Council of Wales Lottery Fund and the Welsh Assembly Government.
