Eddie the Eagle

(Dexter Fletcher, UK 2016, AD, 106mins) Taron Egerton is brilliantly funny as Eddie the Eagle, the unlikely British ski-jumper whose determination to take part in the winter Olympics sees him defying all the odds, and all common sense, to prove everyone else wrong. With all the charm of Billy Elliot, and the humour to match, this is a heart-warming and delightful feel-good comedy. Also stars Hugh Jackman. When a group of savages kidnap settlers from the small town of Bright Hope, an unlikely team of gunslingers, led by Sheriff Franklin Hunt (Russell), sets out to bring them home. Cleverly building the tension to a violent confrontation, this is an expertly plotted, character-driven experience that is very highly recommended.

Marguerite

(Xavier Giannoli, France 2015, 129mins, subtitled) 1921, near Paris: a party is being held at the famous Marguerite Dumont’s mansion. Nobody knows much about her except that she’s devoted her whole life to opera. Her passion sadly doesn’t translate to skill, and the noise she produces is awful. Yet after receiving a bizarrely positive review, she starts to believe in her own talent and aims to put on a proper performance. A massive success in France, this is a touching, light-hearted feast for the ears featuring music from Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi.

Gorgeously shot, this is a warm, witty and moving portrait of love and loss, from the award winning director of The Great Beauty. Also stars Jane Fonda.
