Welcome to Musicfest 2018. I am delighted that, thanks to the support of the University, the Arts Centre and the Music Centre, as well as the generosity of many individuals, Musicfest is still able to offer its Summer School and a varied programme of concerts by talented international performers. The highlight of Musicfest 2018 is the gala opening concert, in which cellist Sheku KannehMason, winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year award in 2016, who played at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, will play Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C and Simon Lane will play one of Bach’s finest keyboard concertos. They will be accompanied by our resident orchestra, the Orion, conducted by Toby Purser. Friday night will be a ‘nocturnal’ event, a delightful programme of nocturnes and songs devised by Tom Poster and also including Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ sonata. The final concert has a Nordic theme, with the Orion Orchestra playing Sibelius great fifth symphony and accompanying Tom in Grieg’s muchloved piano concerto. New music is not forgotten and there will be world premières of works by four contemporary composers.
