Let’s Go Ride A Bike by Paul W. Papa Entertainment & Food

One of my fondest childhood memories is the day I learned how to ride a bike. I remember the joy I felt when after so many tries, I was finally able to keep the thing upright. Riding Financial that bike, with my hands firmly gripping the handlebars, feet on the pedals, wheels spinning underneath me, I was given the gift of freedom—the ability to go anywhere thoseAuto two Travel wheels would take me.

Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail Although this dirt trail is only accessible to bikes with off-road tires, you can’t pass up a chance to experience first-hand a bit of Nevada history. Located at the entrance to Lake Mead, just below the Alan Bible Visitor’s Center, are a set of five tunnels that once housed the railroad used to transport many of the materials needed to build the Hoover Dam to the dam site. While the railroad tracks have long been removed, the overly large tunnels hewn into the iron-rich rocks still exist. In a town that quickly destroys its past, this trail is a bastion of history that has been around since 1931. The family-friendly trail is wide—remember, it used to house a train—and easily accessible.

other thing that makes this asphalt trail popular is that it is just charming. It is decorated with established plants, grass, and trees and there is even a rose garden on part of the trail. The trail is so well landscaped that when riding under the canopy of trees, it’s easy to forget you’re in a desert.

Angel Park Trail The 5.5 mile asphalt trail makes it way around the Angel Park Detention Basin toward the Angel Park Golf Course. The trail is well maintained and much of it is landscaped, plus you get a great view of the Angel Park Golf Course—and the Canadian Geese that like to hang out there. The entire asphalt sections are lined with lamps, allowing you to ride both in the day and evening. Paseo Verde Trail This is probably one of the most used trails in all of Green Valley, due in part to the fact that the trail passes no less than three parks. The Not That Old And Loving It!

Dogs Make Exercise an Adventure

If you are ever feeling tired or bored, your dog’s demeanour can take your mind off how difficult things are. If you are exercising with a dog, there is no need to limit yourself to short strolls around the park or hikes in the woods. Dogs crave variety and adventure, so you could try in-line skating, biking, or even swimming. You could even try a dog-friendly boot camp class or go for wind sprints in the park.

You Don’t Need a Dog to Exercise with One

If you don’t own a dog, you can still enjoy canine workouts: you can volunteer to run or walk a rescue dog at a shelter, or borrow a friend’s dog. There is a clear advantage to volunteering to take a rescue dog for walks or runs: people who walk shelter dogs have a tendency to stick to their commitment because they don’t want to let the animals down. Mash the blueberries with a potato masher and let them simmer for ten minutes. Then, place a mesh strainer over a large bowl and pour the liquid through. Press the blueberry pulp with a spoon to ensure all the juices are released. The juice is great to drink on its own or to use in recipes, while the leftover pulp is a great addition to fruit smoothies.

Who needs icing? This sweet topping is delicious poured over all varieties of cake whether they're frosted or not. Using a thermometer, stir the mixture until it's 155 degrees and thick. Let it cool, then pour over the blueberries in a champagne glass and enjoy. From The Outside Looking In, Happy Holidays The Car Business Looks Easy By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com With its impressive dealerships and flashy new vehicles – not to mention what appears to be great profits – it almost seems like anyone could build, own and stay ahead of the game in an industry that seems to constantly change. After all, the car business is vitally important to the well-being of not only a city but the entire nation but the automobile business is the first to feel an impending crash of the economy. This was shown by the economic collapse of 2008-09 and the recovery that followed. However, from the owner down to the lot porter who cleans the cars and sweeps the grounds, every corner of the car business has challenges. Many automobile dealership owners are also former athletes, and exceptional teamwork often is the difference between a good year and a mediocre year. Several local automobile dealers have followed in the footsteps of their fathers, who opened the doors decades long before explosive growth made Las Vegas one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The old-time car dealers had foresight and they were astute businesspeople. When Las Vegas was a tiny community, automobile executives like Pete Findlay, Don Ackerman, Fletcher Jones, Bill Heinrich, Jim Cashman and Fletcher Jones were digging in to set the groundwork in the industry.

In each case, the brilliant minds in the automobile business set the standards for others who saw opportunity in the desert. Automobile sales are often the result of a dealer first being involved in Southern Nevada. From finding homes for unwanted pets to providing funds for various charities, car dealers have led the way for more than 50 years. The earliest car dealers were at the forefront of the economy simply because their messages were consistent through good times and bad. When local charities or non-profits need help, car dealers have set the pace in community involvement and have set the bar for other Southern Nevada businesses. The new generation of new car dealers weathered the dreadful recession of 200009 but not without sleepless nights caused by reviewing budgets and considering the next move. In just about every case, the prominent names of the car business survived the downturn although not without some sleepless nights. In some cases, dealers were in an expansion mode when the recession hit creating sleepless nights. You can bet that the executives have often thought back to the advice of their fathers in the car business through good and bad times. “My dad (Don) was always much more conservative in his business approach and that Not That Old And Loving It!

Visiting The

Grand Canyon Happy Holidays

From Las Vegas While the fast pace and excitement of booming Las Vegas is fun, sometimes you simply need a quiet weekend away. If life in the never-sleeping big city is beginning to fry your nerves, it sounds like it’s the perfect time to head out of Vegas for a few days of vacation. The Grand Canyon might be just the place for you!

the canyon spans 1,217,403 acres. This natural wonder boasts striking red cliff walls that pique the interest of any geology buff or tourist. At the canyon’s floor you can clearly see the magnificent Colorado River meandering through the labyrinth of stone channels, while the top contains desert cacti and extraordinary overlooks.

The Grand Canyon

How to Get There

The Grand Canyon is a massive, fourthousand-foot deep canyon that is a mustsee for anyone. Truly “grand” in all respects,

long to some, the scenery makes the time fly by. The scenic drive passes through picturesque desert valleys and past beautiful red rocks. Depending on which route you take, you may also have the opportunity to take a few side trips, such as stopping by the Hoover Dam to snap a few photos. It takes very little time to drive over the dam’s impressive bridge, and you’ll be on your way.

Where to Stay

Once you’ve arrived at the park, there are many options for where to stay on your weekend vacation. As the destination of over five million visitors annually, the Grand Canyon has its share of beautiful lodges, hotels, and campgrounds.

Lodges: When you stay in some of the

park’s lodges, you aren’t just near the Grand Canyon—you’re on the Grand Canyon. Imagine throwing open your bedroom curtains and beholding the vast canyon right from your window! El Tovar is one such lodge, located just twenty feet from the south rim. This lodge is considered one of the park’s most distinguished accommodations, with its enormous porch, gorgeous views, and rustic setting. For those who want the Grand Canyon experience, without being too close to the canyon itself, the Grand Canyon Red Feather Lodge is located one mile away from the canyon, within walking distance of many gift shops and restaurants. Global Exhibitions Day Happy Holidays Impacts Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Las Vegas is unarguably known as the Entertainment Capital of the World but it’s also important to recognize our city is also a leading destination for business travel. As I’ve mentioned before, Las Vegas experienced record-breaking visitation with more than 42.9 million visitors in 2016. In addition to breaking a record for overall visitation, Las Vegas also hit an all-time high for business travel after welcoming 6.3 million delegates. On June 7, 2017, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), and Las Vegas as a whole, joins destinations and organizations across the world in celebration of Global Exhibitions Day. The observation, created by UFI- the leading global association of the world’s tradeshow organizers and exhibition center operators, aims to celebrate the outstanding value of the meetings and exhibitions industry. Las Vegas boasts more than 11 million square feet of meeting space in addition to a wide array of event, dining and entertainment venues that are also used for group business. Trade Show News Network recently recognized Las Vegas as the No. 1 trade show destination in the country for the 23nd consecutive year for hosting 57 of the top 250 largest trade shows in North America. In Southern Nevada, the meetings, conventions and trade show industry has a significant impact

on the local economy supporting 85,000 jobs and generating more than $12.4 billion in economic impact. Beyond job creation, the influx of events and business travelers heading to Las Vegas each year leave a lasting impact on our community through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The LVCVA works with these events, travelers and local organizations in need to make connections that will create mutually beneficial opportunities for all groups involved. CSR activities are becoming an increasingly popular aspect of the nearly 22,000 meetings and events that take place each year. Initiatives include volunteer activities, donation drives, charitable contributions and even the commitment to provide materials left on the trade show floor following a large-scale event. Event organizers are eager to explore opportunities to give back to host cities during their events. One shining example is the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Leadership Seminar taking place in Las Vegas July 1316. The group is expecting record number of participants, who will engage in intensive training and development while adding a number of community-service opportunities to the event itinerary.

"Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members from around the country and the globe are excited to leave a lasting imprint on the Clark County community as we host our bi-annual four-day Leadership Seminar focused on developing our members through training and learning opportunities and fulfilling our mission to be of service to all mankind,” said Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority President, Dr, Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson. “More than 8,000 members will mobilize around the International Program ‘Launching New Dimensions of Service’ by participating in seven high impact service projects that will benefit tens of thousands of Las Vegas residents and provide sustainable resources to meet local neighborhood needs.” The lasting impact of these efforts are echoed through the sentiments of organizations throughout the destination. “There are various groups the country who organize conventions, however, the work being done by the LVCVA is exceptional, and provides a service to the community above and beyond many others. Not only does the Las Vegas valley benefit from the economic impact from the conventioneers meeting in Las Vegas, but the philanthropy connected to those meetings provides an extraordinary social impact,” said Julie Murray, Moonridge Group Philanthropy Advisors, Principal and CEO. “There are numerous examples of conventioneers who donate time and funds while they’re in Las Vegas for their meetings. Things such as support provided to the Three Square Food Bank, United Way, Goodwill are just a few examples. As a result of their generosity, the community is a more vibrant and healthy place!” Looking forward, the positive impact of exhibitions, trade shows and business events has the potential to grow in Southern Nevada. The “ings” to Do in Boulder City Park”ing” Ok, so by the title of this article you’re probably asking yourself “I know there’s parking in Boulder City!”. Yes, there is plenty of parking! Let’s think about the other kinds of park’ing’ where you walk through shaded, grassy spaces, listening to the wind gently cross through the trees (or perhaps howl through the trees, depending on the day!). As part of our series of the “ings” to do around town, parks have made it onto the list. We have several parks in town; all of which have their own charm and character. The first and most popular is Veterans Memorial Park located at 1650 Buchanan Blvd.

52 Simply55+

June/July 2017

The park consists of 25 acres and includes four lighted multi-use ballfields. Two of those ballfields are used in October during the Boulder City Chamber’s Trunk or Treat! It also includes two beach volleyball courts, restrooms, a 3-acre fishing pond, model boat pond, soccer fields, skateboard and bike park, splash park, gazebos, horseshoe pits, and acres of open green space. Veteran’s park hosts some amazing walking paths as well, taking you through all of the parks and the ponds. Oh and bring the furry four legged friends too! There’s a dog park! Fido will love romping around the park sponsored by See Spot Run! They do a fabulous job maintaining the dog area! Not That Old And Loving It!

Hemenway Park is another famous park in Boulder City, home to the famous big horn sheep! Listed as one of the top five Best Parks and Nature Attractions in Nevada, Hemenway Park is located at 401 Ville Drive on your way to the dam. Comprised of approximately 10 acres and includes a playground, gazebos, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, and lighted tennis courts. There are two lighted softball fields to sit and watch your favorite baseball or softball team! Of course the main attraction is the bighorn sheep that come down from the mountains to water and graze. You’ll also enjoy some spectacular views of Lake Mead and the surrounding mountain range! Bicentennial Park is located in the heart of the Historic District. Home to annual festivals like Spring Jamboree, Art in the Park, Wurstfest, Best Dam Barbecue Challenge, Not That Old And Loving It!

Artfest and many more, the park offers an elevated gazebo, perfect for outdoor events or parties. There is also a grill, picnic tables and playground, perfect for family gatherings. Wilbur Square is perhaps the oldest of the parks located also in the Historic District. Established in the 1930s in conjunction with the Hoover Dam project, the park was established as a recreation spot for the workers and their families. Today, the park is home to events like Art in the Park and is the antique haven for Spring Jamboree. But don’t just visit during the events! Wilbur Square has the most beautiful trees that provide some shady canopies; perfect for a picnic or a little rest! Whatever park you visit, get out there! There is so much to do in our own backyard! +

The Best Medicine for Seniors by Rachel Wright

Calendar Of Events

Remembering Nevada

Happy Holidays

You may think of Fido and Fluffy as your faithful companions, but did you know owning a pet has serious health benefits, especially for senior citizens? If you’re looking to live a longer, healthier, and happier life, a dog or cat may be the best medicine!

gives the dog or cat a second chance at a happy, healthy life. Many believe that rescued pets simply know they were specifically chosen to join a new family, too! Walks, playtime, and socialization will keep both senior pets and owners active and engaged.

Medical studies show that owning a pet can help lower blood pressure and pulse rate, resulting in fewer trips to the doctor. Petting an animal helps reduce stress, and sharing your home with a furry friend can provide a sense of security and companionship. Taking care of a pet can also help seniors ease feelings of depression, isolation, and the grief of losing a loved one.

In animal shelters everywhere, “senior” dogs and cats -- often dogs over age 3 and cats over age 1 -- are frequently overlooked for puppies and kittens. Taking home an older furry friend has plenty of benefits, though! Older pets may already be housebroken, and adult dogs may have received basic obedience training from a prior owner or shelter volunteer. Animal shelters will also have a wider range of senior pets, so adopters can find the right breed, size, and energy level for their lifestyle. Many offer senior discounts, too!

Looking to get active? Adopting a dog will provide many opportunities for long walks, trips to the dog park, and meeting new people. Plus, owning any pet often requires a routine -- feeding times, walks, litter changes, etc. -- that can be both mentally and physically stimulating. The additional exercise will further add to the list of health benefits pet owners receive from their furry friends! Seniors aren’t the only ones who benefit from pet adoption. Adopting an older shelter pet

Saving the life of a shelter pet is the easiest way to help add more years to your own. With so many pets in the care of local animal shelters, make adoption your only option when the time comes to welcome a dog or cat into your heart and home. You’re sure to be bow-WOWed by the unconditional love and enjoyment you receive from an adopted furry friend! + Not That Old And Loving It!
