A favorite route of advanced hikers is the Cleaver Crack route to Mt. Wilson. It starts at Oak Creek Canyon and follows the trail into the canyon. This route has lots of scrambling and some exposure. Allow about eight hours to complete the hike. Bridge Mountain is a very popular peak to hike. You gain about 700 feet in six miles if starting from the trailhead on the Rocky Cap Road. You will need a Jeep to drive all the way to the trailhead. You can park along the Scenic Loop Road in various spots and walk to the trailhead, if needed. Give yourself at least seven hours to complete the hike. This route has exposure. There is an advanced route to Bridge Mountain that starts at the Pine Creek Parking Area about 10 miles along the Scenic Loop. This route has more elevation gain (3,200 feet) and scrambling. I highly recommend you have a route description before trying any of these hikes. All of these hikes are in my book: Hiking Las Vegas 2011 edition. Another option is to go with someone or group that knows these routes very well. The 52 Peak Club, created by me in 2011, has done these routes dozens of times and leads not only these hikes, but hikes to all the other peaks in Red Rock Canyon and Mt. Charleston. according to Harvard Medical School, so even doing it for a few minutes is going to help you add intensity. Find a set of stairs at a local park -- or even the ones at your home -- and run up them a few times at the start of your walk and then a few times at the end.

Don’t Go On The Same Route Every Time. The human body is incredibly efficient at adapting to the stress you put upon it. If you walk the same route for the same distance every time, your body is going to adapt to that stress, and you’ll find that eventually you won’t have to work as hard. Of course, adding more time to your walks is one way to add more intensity, but if you don’t have the time or inclination for that, you can get a similar effect by simply choosing different routes. Choose a hilly course one day a week, walk in the opposite direction as you normally walk, or find a new hike you can explore every weekend.

Run Just A Little Bit. If you’re walking because you don’t like running, that’s OK -- you’re not the only one. Instead of running for a long period of time, try really short bouts of sprinting. Sprint for one block and then resuming walking until you feel composed enough to sprint again. If you manage to do six to eight sprints, you’ve added a high-intensity interval workout to your walk. HIIT, as it’s called, can help increase your metabolism for the rest of the day and help you burn abdominal and subcutaneous fat.

If You Don’t Want To Run, Try Skips, Lunges Or Hops. Try any of these alternatives to running to help you increase your heart rate and get that HIIT feeling. With a little creativity, you may find you’re having more fun and getting in better shape while you do it. +

Once a classic wild west mining town, where 75 gunshot victims were buried in the cemetery before the internment of the first person to die a natural death, Pioche now preserves its mining ghost town as a tourist attraction along with an historic main street and modern amenities including a museum, golf, and opera house. Ely, 107 miles north of Pioche, and just an hour west of Great Basin, is the tourist hub of the area, with rides on restored steam locomotive trains, a local history museum, and the restored six-story Hotel Nevada and Gambling Hall, with rooms themed after the celebrity movie stars who once visited. One hour east on U.S. 50 from Ely is the town of Baker, the gateway to Great Basin National Park, with accommodations, food, local crafts, and a casino.

Geography, Flora, and Fauna Great Basin Nation Park, established in 1986, takes its name from the unusual hydrological nature of the Great Basin of Nevada and western Utah. The Great Basin is what is called an endorheic area, meaning that rather than flowing to the sea, rivers, streams, and rain drain internally, either sinking into the ground or flowing into salty lakes, the most famous of which is the Great Salt Lake. Climate Great Basin has four true seasons, with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. The 8,000foot altitude difference between the lowest and highest points in the park means that you can, to a degree, choose your weather by varying your elevation. A general rule of thumb is that every thousand foot increase in elevation corresponds to a three to five degree decrease in temperature. If you want to get out of your car and explore on foot, you can choose among 14 designated trails, ranging from several short (.25 to 1.5 mile) nature trails to long day or short overnight hikes. If you are an experienced backpacker, free permits allow you to explore the backcountry at your leisure. Some of the best choices are the one-mile Lexington Arch Trail leading to a six-story limestone arch and the two 3-mile trails through the bristlecone pine forest. The strenuous Wheeler Peak Summit Trail, at 5 miles long with a 3,000-foot elevation gain, is quite steep and rugged, but rewards the experienced hiker with panoramic views from a summit 13,063 feet above sea level. In winter, consult with park staff concerning safety and access before exploring snow-covered trails on snow shoes or cross-country skis. You can escape inclement weather with a 1.5 hour guided tour of Lehman Caves, with their dramatic limestone flowstone, popcorn, stalactite, stalagmite, helictite, and shield formations. Grape Expectations provides the education of wine making in a fun environment By Mike Henle www.mikehenle.com It’s August and a busy time at Grape Expectations. Some 5,000 winemakers are planning their scheduled stops at Grape Expectations ordering grapes, which are harvested in the North Coast American Vitircultural area for processing at Grape Expectations in September. The facility situated at 7360 Eastgate Rd., Suite 125, in Henderson has become the hotspot for people who want to have fun while learning about what makes the wine business so enjoyable. In a world rife with issues and setbacks nowadays, a sign saying “Don’t whine; drink

wine” is sure to be on the wall somewhere at Grape Expectations. For thousands of enthusiasts each year, making wine has become a ritual in a facility that might be better known as the “Disneyland of Grapes”. Grape Expectations opened in 2005 after the Nevada Legislature approved the bill that would allow a wine making school in Nevada. “It took us some time to convince people that we were legitimate,” recalls Patty Peters, who joined her husband, Charlie, a well- known mixologist and bar manager. “We opened the doors in February of 2007 with Not That Old And Loving It!

70 barrels,” recalled Patty, who Charlie named “Chief Wine Wench.” “We were serious about what we were doing, although we had no idea the economy was about to collapse. We would have gone ahead with the idea even if we had known the pending disaster was imminent.” In what may be the perfect example that every dream is met with a challenge, Charlie and Patty decided to move their operations to its current location, an 11,000 square-foot facility that measures about four times the size of the original building. “There were multiple reasons why we survived,” Patty recalled, adding that the science of wine making is fascinating. “Charlie died right after we moved into the new building. Between his death and the economy crashing, we had our hands full, but we survived because of our winemakers who believed in us. “In addition, after Charlie died, we were either going to make it or break it. Without Charlie, we were in no-man’s land. The move was not without a leap and a prayer.” Meanwhile, Grape Expectations is going fullspeed ahead setting the pace and attracting

huge followings that range in age from 21 to 91. Grape Expectations consists of several key employees including veteran PR guy and wine aficionado KJ Howe, the former head of the Mint 400 off-road race and a U.S. Army veteran who did tours in Vietnam, Germany, Korea, and the Republic of China; along with Production Guy Chad Evans, and co-owner general manager Mike Schoenbaechler. “Grape Expectations is a very fun educational experience,” said Howe, now 78. “It’s cool because of the unique way we present the curriculum. We keep the snobbishness out by teaching the wine making process in a lighthearted manner capitalizing on the essential elements of the process. “Our customers are the students and they

do everything including crushing the grapes, fermenting, pressing, barreling, racking and bottling nine months later. That way, they all understand fully the process and the nine-month period required to create 240 bottles of wine.” The gang at Grape Expectations is opening the Vegas Valley Winery that is adjacent to the wine making school. The winery will afford customers a wine lounge and tasting bar that is due to open around the end of September. From front to back, Grape Expectations and Vegas Valley Winery has it all covered. Evidence that Grape Expectations has reached the pinnacle of wine making is the customers who frequent the facility including former Metro Lieutenant Chris Carroll and former off-road racer Kenny Cox.

Grape Expectations Professor of Yeastologist KJ Howe, center, is seen with wine makers Kenny Cox, left, and Chris Carroll.

“I had taken some wine classes when I was a cop,” Carroll said. “I knew Patty for 20 years because we both worked at Metro. I heard that her husband was opening Grape Expectations and I was immediately intrigued. I ended up joining Grape Expectations as a customer and wanted to learn more about wine so I enrolled at Sommelier wine school.”

Cox, whose family has been in the plumbing business since 1965, loves the experience.

Carroll, 52, discovered the fun of wine school in 2011 and he’s been hooked ever since.

“I enjoy a good glass of wine, but I also appreciate the technical side of making wine. We have been making wine since 2009.”

“We’re all close friends at Grape Expectations,” said Carroll. “There is no such thing as a bad day at Grape Expectations, which adopted Regan as the junior professor. “I come-and-go and we’re all kind of at the geek level. “Being a cop can be very stressful, and I found that Grape Expectations is the ideal therapy.”

“They are great people and it’s nice to get a group of people together and have some fun,” said the 61 year-old Cox, who moved to Las Vegas in 1961. “You cannot have a bad time when hanging out at Grape Expectations.

Cox said that Bordeaux blend is his favorite. “We seem to be able to mix five different varietals and come up with a great-tasting wine,” Cox said. “In fact, if wine was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for the rest of us.” + Not That Old And Loving It!

LVCVA Celebrates Happy Holidays 100th Birthday of Bill Darwin By Oscar B. Goodman, LVCVA Host Committee Chairman

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) August board of directors meeting featured a very exciting surprise presentation- a special recognition in honor of the LVCVA’s eldest staff member, soon-to-be 100 year-old, Bill Darwin. That’s an achievement we can all aspire to! An LVCVA employee since September 2008, Darwin works for the organization’s registration services to help staff various meetings, events and trade shows throughout the destination. He has worked for 102 shows in the destination via the LVCVA. When the LVCVA staff learned Bill was turning 100, the organization wanted to find memorable ways to honor and thank him for the incredible customer service he provides to Las Vegas’ valued visitors. In addition to recognizing Darwin’s birthday at the August LVCVA board of directors meeting, the LVCVA honored him with a special award for

His video has received millions of views on social media, which has even helped him gain recognition when he is out-and-about in our community. Many times, Darwin is also asked to stop and pose for photos with admirers. Darwin is an inspiration to the LVCVA, our community and thousands of visitors the nearly 43 million visitors that travel to the destination each year. Darwin says interacting with the high volume of convention attendees, including the many international visitors who travel to Las Vegas for business, keeps him young and healthy. What’s the secret to Darwin’s good health and vivacity? He claims maintaining a simple lifestyle, moderate exercise schedule and avoiding stress are the Continued on pg. 28 Not That Old And Loving It!
