The Forest Food Processing Center (FFPC) is for the tribals of Doyapada village of Palghar district located in Maharashtra state. The structure is the product of a collaborative process between the architects, local masons, traditional knowledge systems of the context and a local NGO. The NGO is an organization which is working for judiciary and policy awareness of the tribes of Palghar district. All the above stakeholders come together to lay the foundation of a participatory design process. This interactive process generated structure which represents the local architecture and context and pays testimony to strength of culture which has evolved in the region over the centuries.

The Wattle & Daub House Private Project, Roha, Raigad

Site....

Site is privately own farm land situated in small village of Roha, Raigad district. The location for the structure is selected at extreme south-west corner of land considering wind directions and accessibility. The Hip roof was design as per the climatic condition of site and surrounding old houses. It is wooden roof with double Mangalore roof tile above it. Dormers were added for light and ventilation inside the house. It is also gives overall view to surrounding farmland.

External faces of structure are wattle and daub panels plastered with mud-cowdung and Lime plaster. Internal walls which serves as inbuilt storage and other inbuilt furniture were made of cob and plastered with cowdung.

The Wattle & Daub House was meant to be an abode for the client, who yearned to live a natural lifestyle since his early days working as a conservationist and later as a lawyer. A very strict brief of zero cement structure was laid out. Along with the house, the lifestyle of the person living in it was also designed. Initially, the house was not meant to have a toilet, was not provided with any electricity and had a traditional wood re fueled kitchenette. All of this to meet the clients brief of avoiding plastics in plumbing and electrical services. However, as his family started taking interest in the house, the client and the designers decided to provide for the comforts of the family by building separate kitchen and toilet structures in the same property. Electricity was also incorporated in the core mud structure. The core structure however, remained philosophically intact with no cement used. It was built with unstabilized wattle and daub with cob in the interiors. It is a single room structure with a verandah and an attic. Its designed keeping the principles of passive cooling in mind. The cob walls gave the designers lot of scope to sculpt each and every wall and make the house custom made for the client and his family.

Wooden structural system of house The main structural system of house on witch the its standing and taking load is wooden column (post) and beam system. Here the walls (wattle and daub and cob) are acting as secondary, they are used as covering/panaling and inbuilt storage and furniture purpose. Roong system is also made of wooden members. The above illustration is showing the whole structural system on which the house is standing.

Mohraan Farms an Agro-tourism Center Commercial Project, Shahapur, Thane

A triangular parcel of land with streams owing on all three sides and densely forested with a variety of native ora and fauna, this site is the closest of what we can call an oasis amidst the barren terrain around. Within this natural setting are a couple of young engineers and their families who are natural farmers by passion. With a strong urge to retain, conserve and propogate the ora and fauna on this parcel of land, all of them work on the lines of sustainability to such and extent that they have even left their Mumbai abodes permanently to settle in this natural reserve. CONFERENCE FACILITY

Designed as a multi purpose structure to function as a conference and community dining, this facility is starkly different than its peers. One of a kind “work-acation” spaces made much before the concept picked up. Amidst the green this space is open to the chirps of birds and hums of insects. At night this converts into a community gathering space and a tenting area. An experiment to make a structure from wooden portal frames taught us many lessons in the eld of structures. (New learnings come along a rough route but give insights for a very long time). The open and welcoming nature of the family staying here is highly reected in the amazing service they provide and smiles they spread around. An open area with a barbeque pit attached to the dining space is a great space for lighting bonres on cold winter nights. Steps from the dining go down onto a platform overlooking a stream adjoining the structure. A great space for all generations, this pocket is visually hidden from the chit chatty upper level. A kitchen facility as part of the structure. The black water from the kitchen is treated and diverted into beds planted with turmeric and ginger.

Portal Frames For buildings that require large spans and column free interiors, timber portal frames provide one of the most aesthetically pleasing solutions. Utilizing modern engineering technology, portal frame design transforms timber into a highly effective, efcient and economical structural product. Timber portal frames offer a strong, sound and superior structure. Structural action is achieved through rigid connections between column and rafter at the knees, and between the individual rafter members at the ridge.

COTTAGE

Designed initially as a helpers stay facility, this structure was converted into a pair of twin cottages for the family, friends, nature lovers, volunteers and guests who love to occupy this space. Made using natural materials and hyper local labour this cottage sets an example of a composite structure incorporating wattle and daub and timber frame construction along with load bearing brickwork. Completely plastered using lime and mud, we have gone beyond to even make wooden doors with bamboo in-ll that compliment the entire design well. A big entry veranda welcomes many people all at once to only later lead them into their private lobby, bedroom and back veranda spaces. The grey water is also diverted into two reed beds which grow bananas in return! The structure is also open to insects as they love to dwell in the structure as much as the guests.
