STAGING TRANSIENCE Consolidating Eventspaces for Kalolsavam Design Dissertation 2021-22 | Academics Guide: Niladwuti Chattopadhyay WHY

Kerala School Kalolsavam is a humongous annual school arts festival which brings in an influx of population into a district making it a melting pot of culture. To stimulate larger participation and promote continuity of cultural heritage of the state, Kalolsavam has to be reanimated through spatial architectural configurations.

HOW

The design proposal aims to provide a permanent solution to this problem by incorporating temporary modular event units that can be arranged in an open site. The same modules could be dismantled and used to solve various urban issues for the rest of the year until it is shifted to another district for the next edition of the Kalolsavam.

WHAT

Staging Transience is an attempt at exploring temporality in architecture through Kalolsavam. An array of modules having varied functions come together on a site to facilitate the event. The modules can be dismantled with no substantial site damage and can be individually used in different context to respond to different design requirements.

Kerala School Kalolsavam is an annual event conducted by the Government of Kerala, featuring several art competitions for high school and higher secondary school students of Kerala. The weeklong event is usually conducted in December–January months of a year and is considered to be the biggest cultural event of Asia. Every year, about 12000 contestants from all around the state, flock to around 20 competition venues in a district to participate in 232 events of performing arts and showcase their talent. Each year the venue of the Kalolsavam is changed from one District to another to ensure the participation of the people throughout the state.

PUNERI MEHFIL Semester 9 Architecture Design | Academics Location: Pune, Maharashtra Guide: Shilpa Vivekanand WHY

In recent years, emerging malls showcase similar character, functioning on artificial ventilation, closed building with many boxes of same sizes as tenants, with no local identity. Hence there is a need to Rethink and question the malls as they have to be transformed into thriving 3rd space with seamless shopping experiences.

HOW

Programmatic aspect of rethinking comprises addition of ephemeral eventspaces which amalgamates well with the cultural fabric of Pune. The architectural form of the mall is inspired from tradional wadas of Maharashtra that showcases great potential in adaptabilty and programmatic flexibility.

WHAT

Puneri Mehfil is a meticulously crafted third space for the city wherein retail spaces are woven around ephemeral eventspaces. Both the programs foster each other and contibute to the longetivity of the centre. These eventspaces are not only vital functions in the building but also acts as microclimate and temperature regulators.

SUBKO CRAFTERY Professional Practice 2021 Location: Byculla, Mumbai Team: STaND Design Studio WHY

Subko at Mary Lodge in Bandra needed to expand to a space where it could process coffee at a larger scale as well as create a engaging interactive experience with the customers. Amalgamation of two different process- Coffee roasting with Baking also had to be explored

HOW

Nestled in a leafy Byculla lane the 2,200sqft space has been inspired by microbreweries and wineries from around the world. By introducing industrial chic elements into the warehouse space a fresh perspective into the rich essence of coffee houses in the Indian Subcontinent is established.

WHAT

Subko Craftery is a ‘facility’ in Byculla that is a bakehouse, a roastery and coffee shop, all rolled into one.The Craftery allows Subko to make their production process visible to the public—coffee beans are ground, dough is prepped in an all-glass cold room.

HOUSE 2.0 Archdias Design competition 2021 Location: Kochi, Kerala Project Type: Residential Colonial streets along the water’s edge, festive and colourful Fort Kochi Operates at its own pace Sandwiched between one such street and the majestic beach lives a resident of the city, The House. The writer and the teacher start another day in The House Forced setting of working from home Is the idea of home the same as before? The House is now where there are no rooms stripped down to bare necessities A dwelling governed by activities. Activities dignified by interposing voids The House now has no sharp edges to rip the walls one continuous curved envelope. Punctuated orderly by windows; dwellers meander through spaces that flows The House has space for every accounted and unaccounted emotions to dissipate The House that celebrates aloneness, not loneliness.
