YEAR 5 - DESIGN DISSERTATION
RECLAIMING THE DEONAR DUMPING GROUND
The 5th year Design Dissertation is the evolution of the observations of a local garbage bin in the vicinity which studies how garbage can be repulsive and can cause nuisance around its immediate surroundings. These observations led to questioning of the garbage disposal system in the city. In a city like Mumbai, where availability of space is becoming a concern, hundreds of hectares of land has been kept aside for the purpose of disposing garbage. These landfills/dumping grounds have been there in the city occupying over 300 hectares of land and have led to many health hazards and environmental degradation over the last 3-4 decades. Considering the gravity of the consequences, the thesis states that there is a need to intervene in this particular area. After studying some alternate waste disposal techniques undertaken in different countries, the thesis aims to provide a proposal to establish infrastructure which will cater to the different kind of waste generated in the city and its disposal in an efficient way and thus creating a module which will eventually create public awareness and make the city landfill free. With this aim, the thesis draws references from a few case studies to propose a master plan which will have a green sanctuary with the proposed infrastructure scattered over an area of 135 hectares which will house intersecting pathways, viewing decks and cycling tracks overlooking the different waste recycling units. The Waste Research Centre which will serve as a gateway will act as a transition to draw in people before finally releasing them into the sanctuary and make them aware of the waste management techniques and the scope waste has if treated and managed systematically. The intent was to propose an intervention at an urban scale which will give something back to the city as well as the environment.

YEAR 4 - LOW COST HOUSING FOR MIGRANTS
REDESIGNING SHREE RAM NAGAR AS A SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY
The 4th year housing studio dealt with low income migrant groups located in nalasopara east. After studying the poor living conditions, the main objective was to provide better living conditions to the people by introducing sustainability which would cut down the costs and eventually improve the standard of living by harnessing natural resources and reusing waste. The master plan thus proposed, is based on the idea of sustainability and different housing schemes in the country. By orienting different housing modules based on the flow of the wind and the sun path, every street is decongested by the introduction of courtyards as a community space for household and commercial activities. The proposed housing modules are bigger than the existing ones and have an indoor toilet block as opposed to the earlier existing ones. These modules were further arranged in different permutations to create courtyards and spill out spaces of various sizes.

YEAR 4 - INSTITUTION
KALYAN PORT TERMINAL
This studio was based on the study and research of the area near the ancient river port of Kalyan on the outskirts of Mumbai. Starting as a port, this area has developed into a commercial/industrial centre now and has no provisions for the people to access and enjoy the river edge in any way since the existing industrial activities are scattered throughout and do not have any defined spaces and organized infrastructure. Considering the above aspects, a master plan was proposed to address the different issues and based on that its respective interventions were formulated. The idea of the ancient port was taken into consideration to propose the Kalyan Port Terminal which would activate an alternate mode of transport for the public through the river Ulhas and decongest the roads and railways and also open up an access to the river edge for the locals by creating a public community plaza.

YEAR 3 - OVERSEAS PROJECT
INDIAN HIGH COMMISSION, COLOMBO, SRI LANKA
The semester was based on the study tour to Sri Lanka to explore and experience the architecture by Geoffrey Bawa. As a neighbouring country, Sri Lanka shares a lot of common interests with India. The idea of strengthening these interests further with the objective of making the building showcase itself as an icon of India was the main objective of this project. Located in a high security area of Colombo, the site is next to the Independence memorial, surrounded by different embassies and high commissions. The intent was to subtly draw references from the surrounding fabric and incorporate them into the Indian High Commission and integrate them with the Indian-ness showcased by the building’s architecture.

EXTENSION FOR THE NAMGHAR, MAJULI, ASSAM
As an exercise to experiment with timber as a material, a model of the Noutun Kamlabari Sattra’s Namghar was made at 1 : 50 scale and was displayed in the Majuli Exhibtion in Jan 2011. In an attempt to replicate the original Namghar, no glue or nails were used to erect the model. Lap joints and Tenon and Mortise joints were used for the fixing of the members.
THE MODEL
The river Island of Majuli located in the river Bramhaputra is home to the Neo Vaishnavite people. Often referred as monks, these people reside in monasteries known as ‘satras’ which are self-sustainable in their own way. A community, aloof from the outside world spends most of its time in the ‘namghar’ a place of worship which hosts many songs, dances, prayers and ‘raas’ making it a unique performance space. This project deals with 3 random objects picked up from one of the satras which are then studied and their relationships as well as their characteristics are taken into consideration to evolve a program for a particular site. The process leads to the Namghar as a site where it is opened up into a spill out area which has a performance amphitheatre along with other ancillary extensions which can cater to a large group of people coming in during the festive occasions.
