Research Question

The main objective of the thesis is to understand the exacerbated impacts of climate change on water availability in the Johannesburg region and how can territorial contestations between environment and urban settlements be integrated with the natural flow of systems. The urban design research investigates the characteristics of the spatial landscape and seeks alternative modes of development to redress the contemporary and future challenges of the city.

Fleurhof- The site is located in Witwatersrand minebelt and is considered important to implement suburban development project to link Soweto in south with Northern areas.

Klippoortjie agriculture hub - The peri-urban fringe is constantly under develompental pressure of housing and expanision of city’s edges.
