WANTS. NEEDS. AFFORDANCE The 3 Vitruvian alternatives was always a quest in design. Architecture has the power to shape spaces for the occurance of events coupled with a temporal eloquence. It has the widest span of influence, with the power to affect anybody who comes in contact with it. Shaping involvement, curiosity, perceptions - It always had the power to envigorate reactions. This very capability is what has always managed to fascinate me. The spectrum of architecture is large and I seek to put forth my contributions into this creative field. This portfolio is a compilation of a series of passionate works that was outpoured during the curated ventures. It is every bit a compromise, as also a promise. The studio experience documented has been produced through multi-disciplinary approaches that deemed fit to the pretext of the project, representing the conglomeration of values I hold as an architect for today and tomorrow.

ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION, LIKE LITERARY EXPRESSION, HAS A WIDE FIELD; DANCING, SCULPTURE, MUSIC, PAINTING ARE MORE LIMITED THAN EITHER, BOTH AS TO THEME AND IN EMOTIONAL RANGE. ALL THESE ARTS, HOWEVER, ARE RICHER THAN EITHER LITERATURE OR ARCHITECTURE CAN EVER BE, IN THAT THIRD ELEMENT WHICH MAKES DIRECT ASSAULT UPON OUR SENSES TO LEAD US HAPPY CAPTIVES IN THE REALMS OF DELIGHT. THIS THESIS IS INTENDED TO STIMULATE THINKING ABOUT THE ROLE OF THE LIBRARY IN THE DIGITAL AGE, ABOUT THE POTENTIAL—AND THE IMPERATIVE—FOR LIBRARIES TO MEET NEW NEEDS, AND ABOUT HOW THESE NEEDS WILL INFLUENCE THE DESIGN OF PHYSICAL SPACE. THE GOAL IS NOT TO CATALOG ALL THE INNOVATION OCCURRING IN LIBRARIES NATIONWIDE BUT RATHER TO TRY AN ARRAY OF PERSPECTIVES ON THE FUTURE OF THE LIBRARY AND TO DESCRIBE HOW THESE VISIONS ARE BEING MANIFEST IN SPATIAL DESIGN. THIS THESIS WILL AIM AT DESIGNING A LIBRARY, IN THE HEART OF A BUSY URBAN FABRIC, AND NOT TO CHALLENGE WHAT'S NEW PER SE, BUT IN THINKING WHAT DOES " NEW " BRING TO THE TABLE? AND HOW DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF A LIBRARY CAN FUNCTION IN CONGRUENCE WITH URBAN MOVEMENT AND ACTIVITY.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE LIBRARY
OBJECTIVES AND CONCEPTS
CONCEPTUAL IDEALOGIES AND INTENT The Seshadri Iyer Memorial Hall in Bangalore is situated in Cubbon Park. Built in honor of the dewan of Mysore Sir K. Seshadri Iyer, this monument in Bangalore is home to a luxurious library which offers literary classics that are not found anywhere else in India.
The Memorial Hall is a classic European style building supported by Tuscan columns is built in 1915, in honor of Sri K.Seshadri Iyer who was Dewan of Mysore State from 1883 to 1901.
The Memorial Hall houses the State Central Library. This library was set up 1915. The building is situated in the midst of a garden that also has a statue of Sir K.Seshadri Iyer.
The Library is entered through two porticoes at each end of the front, has a lovely rose garden at its frontage decorates and enhances the building. The Memorial Hall is Classic European style building supported by Tuscan columns is built in 1915, The Library is entered through two porticoes at each end of the front, has a rose garden at its frontage decorates the building.
The building was funded by donations from the public, supplemented with a generous donation from the then Maharaja of Mysore. The idea was for the Memorial Hall to be used for public purposes, specifically a library. The Hall still houses the State Central Library, justly famous for the over 2.6 lakh books in its collection, including a good selection of books in Braille
The Hall is built largely with brick and lime mortar.“The building’s setting, approach, and apsidal plan are all remarkable.”The Hall's galleries have flat roofs with jack arches while the side rooms have sloping roofs.
LANDSCAPE VS PROPOSAL
LANDSCAPE INTEGRATION
USER FRIENDLY
The central hall has an amazing volume, with a roof that is almost 14 metres high. The roof is a truss with tiled roofs, the wooden plans are a false ceiling.” The library quietude around the curved wooden bookshelves, the lambent light from two levels of windows high above and the soaring ceiling give the central hall a warm, hushed atmosphere.
Conceptually speaking, this proposal must be able to adhere to previously accepted norms of typologies used in desiging libraries, while in turn adopt understandings of the newer generation of end users. The following diagrams depict the abstract concepts, in terms of activity, spacing, massing, landscape, architecture and of course interactions.

PUBLIC GENERATOR 14M HIGH ROOF
To rethink how public libraries can be designed keeping in mind the various idiosyncrasies the urban public displays. To treat libraries not only as centres for books but also as platforms for social gatherings. To explore programmatically the potential of what public libraries can turn into viz educational, social and economical standards. To provide an extension to the State Central Library situated in Cubbon Park, Bangalore by incorporating the panoply of ideas mentioned.

SYNOPSIS This project aims at proposing an extension to the existing State Central Library ( The Seshadri Iyer Memorial Park ) situated in the heart of Cubbon Park, Bangalore. A series of important questions arise when contemplating a redesign of a library complex; " Whats new?", " Whats made available in this library which isnt already available online ?", " I want my library close to me at all times, what is it about this library which would make me schlep all the way into the confines of a public park to fulfil my reading needs?", " I require a place to acess books and work at the same time, where can i find such a building ?".
One of the planning strategies was to separate the site into 3 distinct sections; based on the level gradient. The central portion to be sunken while the peripheral portions to follow natural terrain.
DESIGN INFLUENCES The rose garden was initially designed to be the anterior signature of the Seshadri Memorial complex, marking the significance of the public library in the context of an urban forest. Studying the existing architecture, location and user group of the library, the proposal involves providing a platform to cater solutions to all of the questions above, which would tranform into an extension of the public library. The project aims at a typological reinvention of the current norms used in designing educational structures. A cityscale generator of public gatherings, a place of physical and digital sources of knowledge and information. A space for preserving manuscripts and for communal worksapces, incorporated into the world of books. 11
UNDERGRADUATE ARCHITECTURE THESIS
Proposing the use of the rose garden site; though sensitive to the public library gives immense potential ion porposing a revamp of the same. Integration of the rose garden with the design proposal makes another influence dervied from the site.
The longitudinal axis of the site helps in viewing the planning strategy in 2 effective possibilities. 1) Adhere to the original linearity and symmetry. 2) Break away from the symmetry and respond appropriately in contrast with the existing structure. The architectural language of the existing public library led to one the driving factors of design influences. Adapting a contrasting language of construction and design of the existing library was a firm strategy in the proposal.

DESIGN PROPOSAL
STRATEGY
CORE BLOCKS 1) MAIN LIBRARY BLOCK - Consisting of 'Public Access Lounges', Reading rooms ( both formal and informal ), Reference sections for students and academics, fitted with respective carrels, and standard book cores or borrow/returns. 2) WORKSPACE BLOCK - Cowork studios for new age entrepreneurs and/or students with access to a digital archive. 3) ARCHIVE DEPARTMENT - A Platform to store, preserve and document the classical dilapidated manuscripts currently housed inside the existing library. AUXILIARY BLOCKS 1) EXHIBITS - Creating a public convergence zone in the form of a platform to cater to different event based functions such as LIT fests, performances, book signings and so on. 2) CONCESSIONS - Concessions block as part of a retail zone, consisting of stores selling stationary, used books, souveniers and also print/xerox store. 3) - RESTAURANT - A restaurant with an exterior sitout under the cowork studios to compliment the same, as a pause point within the complex.
Given the oblong shape of the site, the existing rose garden and obvious height restrictions to be imposed on the deesign strategy, the planning for the design proposal involves opening up the central portion of site, to be able to craft an interesting entrance portal into the complex, while also providing different entry points to the different blocks of the building programme. The current entry from the south side involves the entrance from Hudson cricle via the Sri Chamarajendra Gate, following the one way road to face the facade of the existing library. Keeping this movement pattern in mind , the strategy for placing each block of the design proposal involves; 1) MAIN LIBRARY BLOCK - Placed along the central axis of the site, at the exact opposite end of the existing library. Entry from the southern tip of the site and from the sunken plaza level from the northern end of the block. 2) WORKSPACE BLOCK - Placed along the eastern periphery of the site, displaying an interior facade from the plaza and the peripheral facade from the east. Entry to this block is from multiple points, from ground level along the eastern edge and from the interior plaza. 3) ARCHIVE DEPARTMENT - The archive block marks the frontage of the design, placed exactly along the line of facade of the existing library, as a statement of OLD vs NEW, heritage vs contemporary. Consists of 2 floors , accessble from plaza and ground level at the front. 4) AUXILIARY BLOCKS - Different auxiliary blocks are part of this design proposal. These blocks are meant to compliment the core funcitons. They are, Confectionares, Restaurant, Public Sitout, Book tower, and Rose garden landscaping.

DESIGN PROPOSAL: FLOOR PLANS & SECTIONS ROSE GARDEN REVAMP Integrating the rose garden with the proposed complex was an important driving force in the masterplan proposal. Initially, the rose garden made up the entire front portion of the oblong site, being subjected to improper maintenance and its access was prohibited to the public. The new proposed complex involves pushing the rose garden into the sunken plaza, integrating the same with the archive department, the concessions block and the restaurant and the exhibits. Ensuring involvement of the garden with respect to the rest of the proposal.

ARCHIVE DEPARTMENT The Archive department is an introduction to the programme viewing the potential of the opportunities the existing library posed. Nearly 1/3rd of the 3.1L books housed in the State Library are dilapidated Braille manuscripts constantly undergoing degradation. Hence the decision to propose an archive department fitted with workcarrels for those hired to document/access such manuscripts.

DESIGN PROPOSAL: FLOOR PLANS & SECTIONS ARCHIVE DEPARTMENT
The State Library still houses over 2.6 lakh books in its collection, including a good selection of books in Braille. and around 300 periodicals and newspapers. The proposal of the archive department was a decision taken to forego the preservation of such dilapidated books currently housed inside the existing library. This department introduces the potential of the proposal to create a space for intimate and very specificity based activities such as hand documentation as well as digital documentation.
ARCHIVE DEPARTMENT
The interiors of the archive department house small scale intimate work carrels to cater to such tasks when required, accessible either by the library staff or by third party consultants hired by the library, or of course the public with special grants. This gesture of introducing the archive department in turn reduces the total volume of books stored in the existing library, making room for new arrivals or addition of additional furniture which is obviously lacking today. Placement : This block faces the facade of the existing library, highlighting the experiential entrance in the space between the exisiting and the new proposal, the roof proposal for the entire extension is a series of barrel vaults, to signify the contrasting expressions of contemporary vs heritage architectural language.

DESIGN PROPOSAL: FLOOR PLANS & SECTIONS MAIN LIBRARY BLOCK
MAIN LIBRARY BLOCK
The premise of this thesis is primarily based on the poor functioning of the existing library, mainly due to lack of an the panoply of functioning spaces which are required to adhere to current library typologies. This proposal adheres to compensate for such lacking spaces by introducing the very same into the programme. The Main block, proposed at the periphery of the chosen site exactly opposite to the existing library facade, is the primary focus of the entire complex proposal. The proposal conists of programmes such as References, Public Access Lounges, Formal and Informal reading lounges, Book cores and work carrels. The main block is accessible from both Plaza and ground levels, creating a sense of entry from both ends. The facade treatment for the entire complex revolves around the fact that the colour red is an extremely vital element in this project. To adhere to architectural coherence, the facades consist of a translucent perforated polycarbonate sheets, which is tinted red, along with steel louvers placed in strategic positions to trap breeze flowing through.

DESIGN PROPOSAL: FLOOR PLANS & SECTIONS WORKSPACES
WORKSPACES
Workspaces. Why do we need them? How do they make part and parcel of our public libraries? Global trends, the idiosyncrasies of todays urban youth, the typological changes in libraries, all led to the introduction of a productivity based function into the programme. This part of the programme consists of a targeted aproach to workspace environments, mainly towards urban youth involved in early entrpreneurships, startup companies or even in their years of academics. Creating this environment in congruence along with the world of books helps user groups expand their purposes of visit into the complex; also providing spaces for housing third party joints for concessions and cafeterias to craft a clear pause point within the complex.
SECTION XX FACING NORTH
This part of the programme includes Cowork studios open to the public, and available to rent on an hourly or daily basis, in turn aiding in generating revenue for the library. Along with cowork zones is a space of public congruence, transforming into exhibits, spaces for book signings, presentation halls for third party events, and other such activities. The workspace environments created are placed adjacent with respect to the rose garden and plaza, accessible from the plaza and ground levels, in order to ensure the proper integration with all of the mentioned.

The main block of the design proposal, being the heart of the proposal and the face of architectural contrast with respect to the existing library, is placed along the principle axis of the oblong site, with its interior facing the facade of the gable roof of the red brick structure. Accessible through 2 points of the masterplan, from within the plaza as well as from outside, consisting of flexible spaces for a library building such as access lounges, book cores, small scale carrels, reading rooms for both formal and informal uses.
The Archive department - designed to house over 1 lakh books, all including British classic literature, articles written in Kannada, and those manuscripts in Braille. Accessible from within the plaza as well as from the northern end of the proposal, whose front faces the facade of the the existing library. Consisting of spaces such as storage, documentation and digitization suites and a book tower for access purposes. DESIGN CONCLUSION
Workspaces - Cowork studios open to public, fitted with lung spaces such as restaurants and open to sky decks for ease of circulation and activity. Open for workdesk rentals either on a daily or a monthly basis. Spaces include digital rooms, cowork studios, a lift lobby which takes guests into the lower floors consisting of presentation halls for third party events as well as a space of public congruence which doubles as a gallery.
The overall intent of this architecture project was to experiment how a public library can function in ways beside the conventional methods, " Can a library do more than what it does right now? " " Is a library supposed to function as a standalone building?"
INTERIOR FACADE OF MAIN AND WORKSPACE BLOCK
The focus of this project was to workout these questions with the help of architectural solutions, a way to tweak orthodox architecture into the newer typologies of contemporary architecture. The usage of barrel vault roofing system was a way of highlighting the contrast between the Old vs New, the existing gable roof vs semicircular vaults, the red brick walls vs exposed concrete structure, all subtle hints to point out the contrast and similarities between the proposed and the existing. Therefore, to conclude, this project highlights a redefined typology for public libraries, aiming to involve the use of existing landscaping, developing public movement patterns and activities, including cityscale events such as literary festivals, public speeches, signings, music performances and so on. These gestures introduced into the programme helped in crafting out the entire design proposal, to create a coherent extension , for the public and institution.

LOCATION - CONTEXTUAL STUDIES ULSOOR LAKE
LOCATION South of India, State of Karnataka, Urban Bangalore city. CLIMATE Bangalore has a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Due to its high elevation, Bangalore usually enjoys a more moderate climate throughout the year, although occasional heat waves can make summer somewhat uncomfortable. The coolest month is January with an average low temperature of 15.1C and the hottest month is April with an average high temperature of 35C. The highest temperature ever recorded in Bangalore is 39.2C. There were also unofficial records of 41C on that day. The lowest ever recorded is 7.8C. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 14C, and summer temperatures seldom exceed 36C. The locality of ulsoor is a surrounded by many important landmarks such as the Lido mall, police stations and important temples such as Someshwara temple , Sri Subramanya swamy temple, flanked on the opposite side with beautiful flower markets and a large lake on the northern end. Ulsoor has been divided into a residential colony and a commercial colony, being able to cater to different classes of society with different means of living and equal employment opportunities, transportation facilities and marketed areas. During analysis stage, it was noticed that there exists different means of activity and character to each and every street at different intervals of the day, thereby enabling us to gain a keen understanding of their day - to - day routine, an understanding of their pre existing conditions with respect to comfort, money, advantages and disadvantages, religious needs, fodder, public amenities and so on.

The commercial typology is clearly seen in the case of Ulsoor's built background. We can see the varying scale of commercialisation , from the advancements of large scale malls that lie on the periphery to the neighbourhood-scale retail stores and markets.
BAZAAR STREET SYSTEM
PUBLIC TRANSPORT NODE
FISH MARKET SYSTEM
Pedestrian movement in such spaces described above is also defined by the character of sales. In case of Bazaar Street (1), the stores are placed wall to wall beside each other, while in the case of malls, there exists an entrance lobby and shops subsequently placed along a corridor.
Sultan Bazaar, which is over a hundred years old, started as a market to sell temple goods, hence its apt location behind Bazaar street. Today, it serves as a daily needs market, catering to a variety of customers, be they dwellers within Ulsoor, or just regular temple visitors.

DESIGN PROPOSAL: FLOOR PLANS & SECTIONS VISION FOR COMMERCIAL ULSOOR 1) The changes in trend with regard to how Ulsoor has moved from catering to a local user to a crowd that is much more cosmopolitan. 2) Plots and buildings that have existed without being subjected to change for many years are now suddenly being converted for commercial-use; Main reasons being that of location in the city as well as the migrant population moving to nearby areas. 3) Commonfolk have stopped using local bazaars and have started using malls and commercial centres, this is hurting the local vendors because people are going to places that provide different kinds of retail at one given location and not going to bazaars which specialise in one certain typology of retail.
GROUND FLOOR First phase of proposal, revamp this portion of bazaar street, which is a high footfall generating zone, by occupying sites being used by 2 dilapidated buildings, and propose to build a mixed use structure, while activating the front and rear of Bazaar street
"Juxtapose" - As the name suggests, this intervention, proposed in the heart of a busy market sector, is a way to harmonise the built environment, organise pedestrian patterns, and of course develop a smart system of formal vs informal commercialisation.
SOMESHWARA TEMPLE COMPLEX
The design proposal shown involves dealing with all the concerns raised during the analysis stage, and has been crystallised into a mixed use structure, where the use of an existing market street at the backdrop of a busy main road has been revamped to accomodate stores and shops with a higher level of efficiency and order, and provide housing options to such store owners at the same time.
TO PROVIDE A SUITABLE PUBLIC DOMAIN One which is open to all kinds of people, right now it consists of religious institutions that cater to only a religious crowd.

SECOND FLOOR
The first floor of the commercial block continues the language of a formal shopping complex, for those shop owners who are accustomed to a certain amount of revenue per day/per month, and are able to afford rent/lease. The housing block consists of a variety of living modules, depending on the carpet area of each module, usually targeting bachelors and/or small families. The 2 blocks are connected by a walkway bridge as shown, this bridge is repeated on the second floor as well keeping circulation and ease of access in mind..
Second floor consists of common facilities for the owners of the apartments living in the housing block. Staircase access to this floor is only accessible from the housing block or from the exterior stairway provided at the west side of the commercial block. Common facilities include kitchen, dining and toilets, and a game room to provide for recreational activities.

VISION
CIRCULATION
Ulsoor as a part of the city fabric plays a very important role in the overall development of the city of Bangalore, in terms of housing, market zones and commercial establishments.
Shown below is the view of the bridgway, connecting the commercial and the housing block together, while maintaining the circulation between the two in a convenient manner.
One of the main visions I can possibly see is the revamp of the market and commercial aspect of ulsoor. The presence of the esteemed Someshwara temple, the very colourful Bazaar street and its perpendiculars really provides an incredible opportunity for a revamp in market fabric. The currently depreciating Sultan market is also one very important reason to introduce a redevelopment in the fabric of Ulsoor. This provides us with a chance to make Ulsoor known for its character filled market. The design proposal consists of introducing a mixed use development around Bazaar street and its perpendicular streets with a 20 year future development plan.

DESIGN CONCLUSION
SOUTHERN FACADE / COURTYARD
Designing a proposal with such an enormous scale and various factors to take into consideration was a challenge, especially since the existing fabric of Ulsoor was growing in its own pace, with respect to market economies, population growth and advancing technological conveniences. The overall intent was to be introduced into the world of urban idiosyncrasies and to learn to deal with such ever-so challenging factors while proposing an architectural intervention. The proposed design shown thus far involves a specific logic into creating a utopian development for the fabric of Ulsoor. The growth of Ulsoor has been stunted in comparison to other parts of Bangalore urban, mainly due to improper maintenance by the government, lack of necassary funding, lack of necassary infrastructure, and of course roadwork.
MODEL VIEWS
Though Ulsoor is known by just about every Bangalorean there is, it has left an impression of a very dingy and unwanted locality, almost forgotten if not for the Someshwara temple, therefore this proposal, located on the same street of the renowned temple, aims to make Ulsoor into a magnificent commercialised zone, where the people of Bangalore urban can once again recognize where parts of history and heritage lie.

MARKET REVAMP A big part of Ulsoor's built fabric consists of a line of local markets, making both the frontage of Bazaar street, as well as its rear. Taking into account the existence of a small scale market zone at the rear of Bazaar street, a decision was taken in order to revamp this market in terms of accessibility, structure and convenience. Shown is the view from the central courtyard facing the rear facade of the main block, comprising of stalls and interior spaces for shop owners to occupy in order to make their living, all achieved by making a definite access point by providing a cross road ( left ) which connects to Bazaar street.

HOW DOES ONE ENVISION HIS LIFE POST HIS 50'S? DOES HE SEE IT AS AN ABUNDANT TIME MEANT FOR PRODUCTIVITY? OR AS TIME FOR ENGAGING WITH FAMILY ? OR IS IT A MIXTURE OF BOTH ? THE 9TH SEMESTER STUDIO CONFRONTED EACH STUDENT'S STAND ON THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LIFESTYLES OF THE YOUNG VS LIFESTYLES OF THE ELDERLY. THE STUDIO WENT ON TO STUDY AN ECLECTIC SELECTION OF COMMUNITIES WHERE LIVES OF THE ELDERLY WERE OF PRIMARY CONCERN. THE ARCHITECTURE PROPOSED HAD TO SINGULARLY RESPOND TOWARDS RECREATING THE BOURGEOUIS IDEA OF OLD AGE LIFESTYLE, WHILE HOLDING ITS GROUND WITH REGIONAL VALUES. WITH RESPECT TO SOCIO CULTURAL AND ON-SITE VARIABLES, THE BUILT FORM HAD TO RESPECT A CERTAIN SET OF GUIDELINES WITH RESPECT TO STANDARDISATIONS AND SURROUNDING CONTEXTUAL FABRIC. THE DESIGN PROCESS WAS SPLIT INTO 3 MAJOR STAGES; NAMELY, a) STUDY b) ABSTRACTION c) RECIPROCATION SITE ALLOCATED WAS SITUATED IN A SMALL VILLAGE ON THE FOOTHILLS OF A BETTA ( MOUNTAIN RANGE ) ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BANGALORE. MAIN CHALLENGES FACED DURING THE EXECUTION OF THIS DESIGN PROJECT INVOLVED THE COMPLEXITIES OF DESIGNING FOR ENDUSERS OF DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS , PRIMARILY FOCUS ON 60+.

OBSERVATIONS ON SITE
RURAL HOUSING TYPOLOGY LOCAL TRADITIONS One of the customs of villages is the way the villagefolk lock their doors. It involves latching the main door with a large wooden trunk and covering the entiredoor with hay. SAFETY METHODS
Normally each settlement comprises of 3 - 12 set of brothers / brother in laws, all living as one community. The system of joint family thrives in such places, helps the families grow and connect with one another during the good times and the bad.
AGNEETHI
The entertainment zone was usually the verandah. The family would sit around the "agneethi"” during night times, telling stories to one another about their respective days. Cooking and eating took place in one of the interior rooms of the house.
CASE STUDY A typical home designed by Laurie Baker. Stone Pillar construction, roofed by timber trusses and clay tiles.
THE PEOPLE
Located behind the school zone near the kalyani.Small hamlet of houses, really tiny spaces. Typical village life. Narrow spaces flanked by row of houses on both sides. Open drains for liquid waste. Rain Water harvesting atop houses. Women carrying tumblers to fill water. No access to borewell water, children running along the narrow streets entertaining themselves. Lush vegetation surround the base of the hills, small settlements developed through time and ended up as a hamlet.
POTTERY CRAFTSMANSHIP
THE PROFESSION
Agneethi means fireplace in the local language .
TOOLS
Backyard Verandah
The usage of traditionally crafted household tools was immense. For day to day activities such as washing clothes, cleaning dishes and so on , locally crafted tools were used. Cooking is done with the help of traditional tools , earthern pots. Women of the house sit together and engage in cooking. Key plan showing location of activities within 59

Housing : Housing units consist of single, 2, 3 and 4 sharing suites, suited for users of all age groups, while incorporating different activities on each floor which would be essential for a resort complex.
The overall intent of this project was to explore the ways as to how a retirement resort can be desgined, would it be in reference to only users of elderly age, or will we be able to incorporate users of all age groups? The focus of this project was to divide the brief into distinct practices of our everyday lifestyle and tweak it into the system. This was achieved by splitting the programme into 3 functional aspects of "new world opportunities", those which include Masterchef Kitchen, Winery and Smart Schools. Smart schools : Children attending the government school located adjacent to the proposed site could be provided exposure to different "new world" teaching techniques. Wine tasting and making, as one of the new world activities, and is appropriate on a site such as Sultanpet Village. The presence of lush farmlands and growing grapes and paddy helps in including winery into the programme.
MODEL VIEWS
HOUSING
With the masterchefs as one of the most famous television shows of the world, introducing such a programme would bring in all the cuisine fanatics of India, also gives the locals a chance to learn new methods of cooking. The above mentioned functions helped craft the design, to be able to cater to users of all age groups while maintaining the facade of an "Old Age Resort".

DESIGN CONCLUSION
LIVING ROOM FACING THE NORTH DRIVING FORCE IN THE PROPOSAL As the name suggests, the proposal involves designing a residence for 3 people, situated in the urban stronghold of Bengaluru city. Many constraints such as site size, vasstu orientation, exterior spaces were to be considered while catering to a comfortable and convenient dwelling experience. The usage of large fenestrations played a vital role in designing the home, in order to maximise and the determine the quality of natural light entering into the structure. The play of mass and voids turned out to become an important driving force in the design, both for aesthetics and practicality.
As a first live project, the design phase proved to be immensely dissimilar from the usual academic exercise. A lot of effort went into taking practicality into the design, while catering to external challenges such as vaastu orientations, crafting exterior spaces on a small site. In terms of learnings, this turned out to be a very productive design exercise, getting experience of dealing with the real world conditions while keeping in mind the teachings of architecture school.
