Environment and Habitation Thesis Dissertation

Much of the current discourse on ‘environment’ is centered around the idea of nature, flora and fauna. But in architecture and the crafting of space, it becomes important to think of it as a continuum of spaces and forces acting on it. The built form is seen as a shelter and an envelope for human inhabitation, that segregates one from the forces surrounding it. For this purpose, the thesis shall focus on the environment as a set of interactions, networks and flows working cohesively with the built form. It also focuses on how these flows significantly impact everyday practices and derive design principles which not only adapts, evolves, and responds to the flux in the environment but also balances and enhances the flows and forces for good habitable conditions.

Plan, Section

Environment and Habitation Thesis Design

Design Provocation The architecture of seamlessness where a living form adapts, evolves, and responds to the environment. Site The site is located in Worli near Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Its a ship dock that deals and operates within the dynamics of oceanic flows Currently, the site is largely occupied by the fishermen’s community for their daily fishing activities, and to rest and relax after finishing their job. Spatial Concept To keep the involvement of multiple species and also avoid any disturbance to the soil, the spatial conceptualization started around the idea of building on stilts. It allows for animals to connect with water, also allows them to have a shelter in the stilt area, and also allows for continuous flow of wind, water without any disturbance.

Vegetation Drawing The vegetation drawing indicates the varied species of trees selected, taking into account the saline water conditions around the site as well as the different birds it will attract. Since birds are one of the main user groups, the vegetation is carefully weaved into the built form.

Highrise

Team - Madhura Patil, Stuti Shah Site location - Goregaon, Mumbai Brief - To design a highrise structural system and layout that caters commercial and residential components. The form emerged from the idea of segregating program distribution i.e., commercial and residence into two towers that were to be connected at intermediate levels by commonly shared programs such as cafes, libraries and sky parks - a concept derived from our CCTV HQ, China case study. The form of the curving towers is such that the two towers lean towards each other for support aided by the arched trusses and secondary members that creates voids in between dispersing the encompassing heat around the structure efficiently and weakening the wind velocity thereby making the form more aerodynamic and reducing the impact of high winds on it.
