MODULE 1 SITE & CITY
YOUR CITY COLLAGE
After the initial exercises, the first attempt on discovering your imagined city. The collage focuses on the diverse nature of the city with a clear transition in the density of people and the built very similar to the works of M C Escher. From southwest to northeast one can experience a smooth shift to a more urbanised approach. From dense life on streets to neat green scapes with people and car following the grid.
MODULE 1
CONSTRUCTING THE CITY
LETTER TO FRIEND ABOUT LIFE IN THE CITY
Dear Friend Now when I am finally done with my shifting and unpacking I have decided to write you a letter about my new residence and the city. So far as expected the city has been to good to me, coming from a city like Chandigarh it has been a different experience. The city on a major scale is like a park, with so many different types of built forms and activities. I live in the south east part of the city, which is not too far from the center. I think my part of the city I like the most, It’s a good mix of urbanity and the old fabric. The streets are filled with different colours and very fascinaying trees all over. There are some nice buildings around me street but most of them are in the north, which has a different vibe on its own. I prefer to ride the cycle because of the good roads and too many cars, I hope everyone starts doing that. We even have a separate cycle track so that make things pretty easy. There are many old buidlings here which have been renovated and made in to public areas, where you can find the best and the cheapest food! But most of them are in the south, The north is more fancy. Though I really appreciate how the city has managed to use the liminal spaces here, Spaces like under the bridge, inside the bus stations, train station also even below of some residence buildings you can find markets. Yesterday I spent the whole day walking and I am not going to deny that but the city looks incredibly beautiful with all those nights and people walking their dogs. Thought on my way to the denser part of the city I found I could relate it more to my time in Ahmedabad. Where the people and buildings fused together to create the city fabric. You could see different communities getting formed there. There are some local artisans markets near to the highway also which I really liked and felt it’s a perfect destination to go out with your camera. As I mentioned before the northern part stood out like a cheery on the top of the city, with newer buidings and fewer people with really good green cover all over, in the morning you could see the working people going there for a jog or a walk with their dog, In the afternoon the parks became quiet and the streets became loud with people and cars everywhere. My friends took me to a fair there, I felt it was expensive. After that we spent the whole evening playing footall at the park nearby a museum. It was mix of both worlds there at that moment, later we went to the south to eat some street food. I am really looking forward to explore more of this small town and I hope you visit soon till then I will look for all the secret corners! Cheers!

CONSTRUCTING THE CITY
ILLUSTRATED MAP OF THE CITY This hand drawn perspective map is a reflection of city through the eyes of a cyclist on the streets, the journey goes though the diverse parts of the city experiencing different activities at different times of the day. The experience of cycling gives one the experience of how the city emerged and how it is growing.

Detailed drawing of the elevator, covering three levels i.e ground, midway deck and the bus stop. This elevator is designed very sensitively according to the requirements and needs of the poeple using it. It allows passengers park their cycle while they travel vertical. The thin rods supporting the roof also consists of hooks for haning heavy luggaes. The very light metalic railing also keeps the eleavtor transparent serves the purpose. The doors slides down each level for open access.

THE CONCEPT An urban school, the building caters to learning as a holistic experience. Spaces for learning are shared halls called the ‘learning halls’ which are seperated uniformly by spaces meant for inter-disciplinary learning and laboratory-like activities. Each learning hall inhabits two grades which includes 120 students. Learning halls consist of workshops, classrooms, and spaces meant for a fruitful learning experience as a whole. This typology is followed on each floor. The simplicity in the design strategy makes for a harmonius working in the school. Two major axes guide movement withtin each floor, and the liminal spaces formed hence, themselves become spaces which encourage learning in various ways.

THE DYNAMIC SCHOOL Taking the character from the pedestrian intervention near the fly over, the extensions are an extension of the same concept, both literally and in idea. The building has a total of 6 ‘moving floors’ and 4 passenger lifts. Each extension moves across different floors, acting as additions to the space and function of the spaces housed within the existing structure. They contain a variety of different functional equipment and furnishing, allowing them to morph into workshops, and other multi-purpose spaces, depending on the part of the school that they are stationed at. These lifts stop at the terrace level, allowing for balcony-like niches around the terrace.

EXPLORATION OF MOVEMENT AND ENCLOSURE Using model making as a design tool, qualities of movement and enclosure were explored in great detail. Models made of acrylic, the movement was denoted using opaque white materials and the enclosures were created using transperent acrylic.

THE TERRACE The terrace of this school is a reflection of the life in the city. The floor which is a culmination of the school and which is the threshold between this school and the sky, This space plays a key role in the life of the city as well as the school itself. It houses activities like movie screenings, public events and events personal to the school and the community involved with the school.
