Australia India Business Council members approve constitutional changes to enhance Council’s business profile Historic constitutional changes come ahead of India Economic Strategy release.

D

uring an Australia India Business Council (AIBC) Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of members held on 5 April, 2018 in Sydney, members approved an historic transformation of the AIBC constitution to ensure a more business focussed direction. The constitutional changes come ahead of the release of India Economic Strategy and have been approved to ensure that: AIBC is a more business-based membership council, thereby increasing its business profile; business members are given more opportunity to lead through elections and nominations; individual memberships are offered to outstanding professionals in the bilateral business space; and new members are allowed time to assimilate. Commenting on the approved constitutional changes, AIBC National Chair Sheba Nandkeolyar said, “The India Economic Strategy report, led by Mr. Peter Varghese AO, Chancellor of the University of Queensland and

former Australian Foreign Secretary will be presented to Prime Minister Turnbull very shortly, and AIBC is taking proactive steps to ensure Australian businesses are well equipped to take advantage of the economic transformations underway in India. The amendments to the Constitution directly relate to, and support, the business approach and objectives of AIBC.” “AIBC has built a strong reputation as the only go-to bipartisan business council which facilitates trade and investment matters between Australia and India. AIBC is the first point of business contact for all stakeholders including the Government of Australia, the Government of India and the industry and as such, AIBC is committed to its role as a bilateral business council. Our members have indicated their approval to adopt a much sharper business focussed approach from 2018 onwards and in keeping with AIBC’s vision and reason for existence,” continued Ms Nandkeolyar.

Measured by purchasing power parity, India is the world’s third largest economy. Over the past 20 years, the share of its economy devoted to international trade has risen from 13 per cent to 40 per cent. Over a similar period, it has seen nearly a 20 per cent increase in foreign direct investment each year. AIBC National Vice Chair, Jim Varghese, AM said, “The sheer scale of the Indian economic transformation and complementary nature of the Australian and Indian economies cannot be ignored. The AIBC now has a modernised constitutional platform to add business-to-business value to these new emerging economic winds of change and opportunities.” The EGM was hosted by new AIBC National Gold Partner, McCullough Robertson Lawyers.

rowing up, I would look at the children next door and think that they looked happy.I wished I could be like them. They seemed so confident and in charge. I have discovered that many people, like me, have the habit of looking at others and comparing themselves to them. It didn’t make me feel good, though, comparing my life and myself to others.I guess I didn’t know how to appreciate what I had. It has taken me a lifetime to learn appreciation of what I have. It has also taken me a lifetime to learn and understand that my perception of others may not be anywhere near accurate.I have been judging others from the standpoint of the way I see the world.Now, if you look at the picture above, is there really a great difference between what I have and what my neighbours have? If I wanted the shade of their tree and the bench, I could plant a tree and obtain a bench I liked.If I wanted the perfect lawn, I would need to work as hard as they did, and do, to have that

perfect lawn and to keep it looking that way.However, I would have to give up my lifelong buddy, my dog, to have a perfect lawn.So, is it worth it?A house may look perfect on the outside but is there happiness inside?Would having what I see as the ideal house and garden make me satisfied, if I am not happy? Maybe my neighbours have been watching me through their curtains all these years, wishing they could be as happy and carefree as I look, spending time with my beloved dog, out in the yard. Maybe they wish they didn’t have to work so hard all the time at their jobs and at home, keeping up appearances.

Maybe they have wished they could be just like me!Wouldn’t that be amazing? It’s possible, at least sometimes, that they do have that thought. Maybe I am the fortunate one as, without having to do all the hard work my neighbours do, I can gaze over my fence any time I like and have the view of a perfect garden and yet be free to live and play in my own garden as I like. So, who is fortunate or more fortunate?Doesn’t it all depend on our point of view, on the way we see things?

The Forgotten Hero

Sultan-ul-Qaum Jassa Singh Ahluwalia Harmohan Singh Walia

T

he 300th birth Anniversary of Baba Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was celebrated at Red Fort Delhi in April 2018. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee are celebrating the 300th birth anniversary of great Sikh general Jassa Singh Ahluwalia at a large scale, in April-May 2018. The former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh while delivering his speech in New Delhi, on 23 March 2018, said, “The Sikh warrior Baba Jassa Singh Ahluwalia had aimed at founding the Khalsa Raj. Jassa Singh, who was inspired by Mata Sundari, conquered Delhi defeating Mughals and left for Punjab after getting the historic places of the Sikh community liberated. His aim was not to establish his kingdom. In 1783, Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, Jassa Singh Ramgariya and Bhagel Singh had defeated Mughal emperor Shah Alam, who had gone into hiding.” The former Prime Minister said that the Sikh community should come together leaving their personal benefits aside and adopt their lives according to the path shown by Gurus to establish a new society.

Former Chief Justice of India, Justice J.S Khehar said, “Jassa Singh had won all wars he had fought against Mughals in Delhi, Lahore, Amritsar and Kapurthala and proved a natural leader of the Sikh community.” Others who spoke on the occasion were Brig Sukhjit Singh, scion of the Kapurthala royal family, Manjit Singh GK, president of the DSGMC and Professor P.S Kapur, former ProVice Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was born on 3 May 1718 in village Ahlo near Lahore. Hence, the name Ahluwalia (meaning from Ahluwal). His forefathers were landlords, who were rewarded four villages Ahlo, Hallo, Toor, Chak for their bravery in wars. The main function was held on 3 May 2018 at Manji Sahib near Harimandir Sahib, Amritsar. In 1939, Nadir Shah, the Turkic ruler of

Persia, invaded much of Northern India, including Punjab, defeating the Mughals at the Battle of Karnal, he plundered the city of Delhi (Shahjahanabad) robbing it of treasures like the Peacock throne, the Kohinoor diamond and the Darya-inoor diamond and either massacring or enslaving much of its population. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was 21 years old at that time, he planned raids to free all slaves. He along with other Sikh bands attacked Nadir Shah forces, freed all slaves and send those slaves back to their families safely. In 1745, Nawab Kapur Singh reorganised 11 jathas (Misls) from 65 jathas (Misls) and gave the name “Dal Khalsa” (Army of the Khalsa). Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was nominated as the Supreme Commander of the Sikh Confederacy. Nawab Kapur Singh appointed him as his successor on the eve of his death in 1753. Elated at his successful helmsmanship, the Khalsa honoured Jassa Singh with the title of Sultan-ul-Qaum (King of the nation), when they captured Lahore in 1761. He has been credited for rebuilding the present day holy Harimandir Sahib, in the year 1764, which was destroyed, during the Afghan Invasions. In April 1761, Abdali was returning triumphant having destroyed Maratha power at the third battle of Panipat. His booty included 2200 Hindu women being taken to Afghanistan to be sold into slavery. When Jassa Singh Ahluwalia came to know about this, he left immediately with a volunteer force, caught up with the Afghans at the River Sutlej at Goindwal, rescued the women and had them gallantly escorted to their families. This action which required great audacity, swift and flawless execution and a complete indifference to danger, made him a household name in north India. On 5 February 1762, in the vicinity of Malerkotla, about 20,000 Sikhs were killed at the end of a single day’s action by Ahmed Shah Abdali near the village Kup. This battle is known in the Sikh history as the Wadda Ghalughara (The Great Holocaust). During the course of the Battle, Jassa Singh was reported to have had 72 wounds on his body but still survived, as did his counter paths

from the other Sikh misls; Charat Singh Sukerchakia for example rode five horses one after the other to exhaustion and Jassa Singh Ahluwalia sustained injuries to his body. Upon verbally challenging Ahmed Shah Abdali himself, Jassa Singh is known to have almost killed Ahmed Shah Abdali, narrowly missing him and killing his horse instead. Despite the Ghalughara disaster, by the month of May, the Sikhs were up in arms again. Under Jassa Singh, they defeated the Afghan faujdar of Sirhind, Zain Khan at Harnaulgarh in revenge for aiding Ahmed Shah Abdali in the holocaust. Abdali made a mild effort to win over them and sent an envoy with proposals for a treaty of peace. The Sikhs were in no mood for peace and insulted the emissary. The second battle of Amritsar was fought on 17 October 1762 and Jassa Singh captured a large portion of Ahmed Shah Abdali’s troops.

daughters), he was succeeded by Sardar Bhag Singh Ahluwalia, whose son, Fateh Singh became a close collaborator of

Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Like the other Misldars, Jassa Singh also established a Katra or colony for his misl in Amritsar,

which was later named Katra Ahluwalia in his honour. In the year 1783, the Sikhs marched to Delhi, capturing the Shahi Lal Qila, the royal palaces of the Mughals, and hoisting the Nishan Sahib, and throwing away the Mughal flag down. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia died on 20 October 1783 when he was coming to Amritsar from Fatehbad for Diwali celebrations. He stopped at village Bandala for a while and passed away on his way to Amritsar. According to his will he was cremated close to Sardar Kapoor Singh’s Smadh in Amritsar near Burj Baba Atal Rai. Jassa Singh’s tomb still exists at parikarama of Baba Atal Rai. A Gurdwara was constructed by Jagirdar Ahluwalia’s family at Bandala village where he made his last halt on his way to Amritsar.

In November 1766 Abdali came to the Punjab for the eighth time with a vowed object of “crushing the Sikhs”. The Sikhs had recourse to their old game of Dhai-phut (‘hit, run and turn back to hit again’) tactics. Inflicting a humiliating defeat and forcing him to retreat, with five thousand Afghan soldiers killed. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia with an army of about twenty thousand Sikhs roamed in the neighbourhood of the Afghan camp, plundering it. Jassa Singh continued with his campaigns. After Abdali’s ninth and last invasion in 1769, Jassa Singh wrested Kapurthala in 1774 from Rao Ibrahim Bhatti and made it his headquarters. Being without a son (but having two

Support like this is important to ensure Australia remains an open, inclusive and cohesive multicultural society.” “We are proud that Australia is the most successful multicultural country in the world and the work of The Salvation Army and other groups in forging closer integration by new residents is a key part of this success,” continued Mr Tudge. The Salvation Army’s National Chief Secretary, Colonel Mark Campbell, says the organisation’s services are open to every person who calls Australia home. “Wherever there is human need, we will be there to serve without discrimination,” Colonel Campbell says.

The Salvation Army, affectionately known as The Salvos, provide a number of important social services for multicultural Australia, which can only be achieved through the continued support of the Australian community. “These services include homelessness support, women’s and children’s services, financial counselling through Moneycare, addiction and recovery services, legal assistance through Salvos Legal Humanitarian, English classes and many more,” Colonel Campbell says. “We are urging the Australian community to dig deep to support this year’s Red Shield Appeal. It is only through the public’s support that The Salvation Army is able to provide a hand up to the most disadvantaged people in our community and give hope where it’s needed most.”

their country of birth, they are also proud that Australia has provided them with a new beginning and look forward to opportunities where they can contribute back. Mr. Joseph Assaf, Chairman of Ethnic Business Awards and staunch supporter of The Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal for over twenty years said, “The support The Salvation Army gives disadvantaged Australians, including those from multicultural communities, is very valuable and important. I encourage everyone to volunteer for this year’s doorknock and donate.” To volunteer for this year’s Red Shield Appeal doorknock weekend, please call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or register online at salvos.org.au.

The Five Stages of Purchasing a Property Mittu Gopalan

Finance Before searching local property listings, you should meet with your mortgage broker and have your finance approved. This will make it much easier during the settlement process and avoid any delays in settlement because of delays in finance approval. Using a Buyer’s Agent Real Estate Agents work for Vendors to help them sell their property. However, if you are engaging a Buyer’s Agent to help you locate a property or to bid on a property for you at auction, be sure to have their agreement reviewed. Know what fees, terms and conditions you are signing up for. Reviewing the Contract Before bidding on a property at auction or signing the contract, we recommend you have the contract reviewed by a Licensed Conveyancer or Solicitor. This is to ensure that the contract does not have any clauses that may be detrimental to you and so that you are aware of any conditions that you will be subject to when purchasing the property. Some properties purchased by private treaty will have a cooling-off period of anywhere between 3 and 10 business days (this is something that your conveyancer or solicitor can negotiate for you). During this time, your solicitor will be able to negotiate with the Vendor’s solicitors and you will be able to arrange an Inspection of the property. A cooling-off period is a set number of days after entering into the contract in which you can decide to proceed with the purchase of the property or terminate the contract. In New South Wales, this period is usually five business days long and if you decide to terminate the contract you will be liable for a termination fee to the seller (0.25% of the purchase price). Properties purchased at auction do not have a cooling-off period. You should conduct all enquiries and investigations well before the date of auction, so you

22

have enough time to negotiate and make a decision. You should also look into arranging a Building and Pest Inspection and/or a Strata Report prior to the auction. Once the cooling-off period ends, you will officially enter the “post-exchange” period. Post-Exchange During the post-exchange period, your solicitor/conveyancer will be making arrangements with the Vendor’s solicitors, your bank, the real estate agents and any other interested parties to make sure that settlement takes place on time. Your representative will ask for the following details which you should provide straight away to avoid delays in the settlement process:

your solicitor/conveyancer if you are a Permanent Resident and have recently travelled out of Australia. From this stage, there is very little contact that will need to take place between you and your conveyancer until the days leading up to settlement.

2. A copy of the signed contract for sale.

Rest assured, radio silence does not mean that your matter is not being worked on. During this time, your solicitor/conveyancer is planning for settlement to take place, negotiating with the Vendor’s solicitors and your bank to ensure that all takes place smoothly.

You will need to meet with your solicitor or conveyancer or arrange an appointment with a certified Verification of Identity Agent (Australia Post or ZipID if your solicitor/conveyancer is registered). You will need to have the following documents available to be certified:

You will not need to meet with the solicitor/conveyancer thereafter, as the only further contact made by your representatives will be the long-awaited phone-call that you now own the property. You will then need to contact the real estate agent to collect the keys to the property.

1. Your mortgage broker’s details, including the details for your incoming mortgagee;

Proof of Citizenship of Australia (Birth Certificate, Passport, Citizenship Certificate);

If you are a Permanent Resident or are in Australia on a Visa, you will need to provide your Foreign Passport and copies of any documents form the Department of Immigration detailing your Visa conditions;

Your Drivers’ License/Government Issued Photo Identification Card;

Your Medicare Card;

A utility bill.

If you are unable to provide any of the documents, you can speak with your solicitor/conveyancer about the options available to you. You should also notify www.DesiAustralia.com

May, 2018

You should engage a conveyancer/ solicitor who has expertise in this area so that you do not run into any situations where your questions remain unanswered. Settlement Settlement is a transaction that takes place at a venue nominated between parties. You will not need to attend. Once the property has settled, the Certificate of Title is handed to your mortgagee. If there is no mortgage on the property, the Certificate of Title will be handed to your solicitor/conveyancer on settlement. If your solicitor has safe-custody facilities, you may want to think about storing the Certificate of Title with your solicitor. If not, make sure you store the Certificate of Title somewhere safe.

Known as the most successful singers of the 1990s Kumar Sanu and Arnuradha Paudwal gave actors like Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon, Akshay Kumar and Govinda their iconic hits and made them household names overnight. Their voices not only mesmerised audiences but made many a Bollywood film timeless across the world through their memorable songs. The energy they brought to their songs was reflected in the audiences who came from across Sydney to see their favourite singers. Crowds were lining up already humming songs and moving to the rhythm as they waited to get inside the concert hall an hour before it started, excited to hear the voices that still continue to mesmerise today. A big percentage of the crowd was made up of teenagers and young adults like myself who grew up being taught how to romance, how to dance and how to live life from the beautiful

ydney finally got to see, or rather hear, for the first time ever, the romantic duo from the 90s era Kumar Shanu and Anuradha Paudwal. Held at Withlam Leisure Centre, Liverpool, in Sydney South west, the show was organised by Crestwood Indus Care- Bhaskar Ratnam songs sung by the duo. The concert lived up to its excitement by starting with a lively dance to some of the hits like Dindong Ding, Husna hai Suhana, building up the excitement as the audience made themselves comfortable. The already excited audience were then treated to beautiful songs of the era gone by, by local talents. The crowd were uncontainable when Kumar Sanu finally made an entry on stage following a brief slideshow chronicling his journey in the Indian film industry. He did not keep his audience waiting for long but dived straight into singing some of his hits like ‘Ashiqi ke Liye’ and ‘Ek Ladki ko Dekha’. He didn’t just sing but entertained the audience with his stories of interactions with directors like RD Burman and his own personal journey. He kept the audience rapt and focused by taking them along on his journey through Bollywood. Taking a little break, he exited the stage to introduce his co singer the great Auradha Paudwal. Anuradha herself described the 90s as a “mesmerising time” with songs that had romance, dance and a whole lot of excitement in them that made people fall in love, made them get up and dance and made them memorable hits. And that excitement could be seen at the concert hall where the crowds were uncontrollable with their cheering, humming and clapping. While Kumar Sanu entertained the crowd with upbeat, popular songs, Anuradha Paudwal brought another

aspect into the concert, with her songs chosen for their deep lyrical meaning and sense of innocent romance in the days gone by. She brought tears to the eyes of many a person by singing one of her personal favourites and probably one of most philosophical songs ever of Bollywood ‘Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma Hai’. Taking the audience back to an era of songs that made one think about life, love, loss and grief, she summed up her song by reminding people that music has the power to change and influence the thoughts and that it is probably the only universal language that will appeal to even the hardest of hearts. Adjourning for a brief dinner break where the audience had a chance to indulge in hot foot provided shop for some jewellery, the concert resumed for the most awaited part- the duets. Starting off in typical Bollywood style, the duo started with the all time favourite ‘Tujhe Dheka Toh ye Jana Sanam’ from DDLJ, making the crowd go berserk. The duet followed by many other famous ones ‘Yeh Dil hai ke Manta hi Nahi’ and ‘Nazar ke Samne, Gigar ke pas’. The concert lived up to its promise of a spectacular night and we can confidently say that it amazed every single person sitting in the audience from the 16 year old to the 86 year old with its timeless songs, great charisma and the beautiful romance that can only be found in Bollywood.

Breaking barriers through song & dance:

the 2018 International Festival of Language & Culture brings peace and unity to a sold-out audience

O

n Saturday 5 May, Amity College and Affinity Intercultural Foundation brought the 16th International Festival of Language and Culture (IFLC) back to Sydney for one spectacular night of song, dance and diversity. A diverse audience of more than 2,000 guests including politicians, academics, members of the diplomatic corps, community leaders, artists, human rights activists, legal professionals gathered at the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney for a breathtaking multicultural journey across 19 countries, with the help of MCs Janice Petersen of SBS and legendary SBS veteran George Donikian. The three-hour event opened with a special Aboriginal smoking ceremony and dance performance featuring students from Redfern Dance Academy. An Acknowledgement of Country was given by Serena Williams from Barker College. Standout performances included a special drum performance from Japan, an impressive martial arts showcase from China and a heart-thumping Haka performance from New Zealand.

The evening also featured a quasimusical narrated by veteran voice actor Phillip Hinton, recreating the stories of Nelson Mandela, the Prophet Joseph as well as Cain and Abel. Students from Amity College performed the song, ‘Let them be free’, dedicated to children in custody around the world. Representing the Premier Gladys Berejiklian; NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Ray Williams

commended IFLC for its contribution to multiculturalism in his speech. “We are so lucky in this country, and I’m thinking about this theme tonight, ‘Colours of the World’ as we celebrate the richness of our diversity.” he said. Senator Kristina Keneally commented on the sense of hope and unity that the young performers had instilled in everyone, remarking on their ability to bring people together. ‘If students from 19 countries can sing and dance together, we can create peace together. Hope for peace in our world relies on young people because they have peace and respect for one another burning in their heart.” she said. “Tonight, we are celebrating the idea that no matter who are parents are or where they were born, what the colour of our skin, whether we are male or female, we are fellow human beings.” Former NSW Premier Barrie Unsworth delivered the closing speech, acknowledging Australia’s rich Indigenous history and their significance in modern Australian society. “Tonight, we’ve been right around the

A Guide to Smart Homes Sarang Vengurlekar

W

elcome to another informative edition of Desi Australia eMagazine. We have briefly touched upon the subject of Smart Homes in our previous Desi Australia eMagazine in the month of September 2017, there are many questions that are still un-answered related to Smart Homes a.k.a Home Automation; Recently there has been a big surge upwards about the confusion that consumers are facing trying to get their head around different types of home automation systems as we are flooded with thousands of brands and products in the market.I have received many calls and email enquiries from general public to clear up the confusion of what type of system to pick and to further explain home automation. Smart homes are houses and buildings that have several smart devices which are interconnected with each other to form a wireless infrastructure. This type of network infrastructure allows us to control the temperature in the house, schedule a washing machine to start washing clothes at a specific time or turn on the hot water kettle just before waking up. Although this technology has been around for a long time nowadays smart homes are becoming more complex than ever before as there are more and more devices available. Smart homes are changing our way of living and we will rely on this technology as we move forward in to the future. The consumer demand for smart-home technology has constantly been surging, with reports predicting the industry will

reach well over $100 billion in-between 2020 and 2025. Although the idea of automating a home has increased in popularity, many people are unsure about what constitutes a smart home, how this technology works, and how it will contribute to the value of their home if and when it comes to selling their property. I believe a lot of misunderstanding is between the termsused by general public versus the terms used by the industry professionals. It can get very technically at times trying to deal with various abbreviations and trying to make sense of it but we hope to set you on the right path by trying to provide you with various examples and scenarios. As an example difference between the termshome automation and scheduled timer; simply setting your lights on a timer does not constitute it as a smart home. It is in fact much more than that. I will endeavour to elaborate more on it as we move forward in understanding and differentiating the terms used from a general public perspective. A smart home system typically consists of a centralised hub which acts more like a brain and a command centre as the commands are sent to automation devices to perform a certain function. A smart home simply is a home that can replicateand automate our everyday actions without the need for human intervention. It is purely because of the configuration on the central hub that was mentioned earlier. It is a combination of commands set on the central hub that will eliminate the need of any manual intervention by us. Since there is a massive outburst of unbranded home automation systems

in the market it is very important for a buyer to ensure that they are buying the right technology. It is always a good idea to buy something where you are able to recognise the brand name specially if you are familiar with the name through a friend or a family member. A massive confusion is that many consumers think wireless home automation systems all run on a normal Wi-Fi signal therefore as long as there is a Wi-Fi connection, all smart-home devices will automatically work in tandem. This is absolutely incorrect, although Wi-Fi connectivity is a crucial part of smart-home technology, different devices have different means of exchanging information between them, and this is known as communication protocols. Many wireless transmitters use infrared technology such as television remotes, split air-conditioning, while others use Bluetooth such as Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox, similarly for automation there are many protocols such asWi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, Insteon, Thread, Push, C-Bus, ZigBee, Z-Wave and X10. There are few more protocols in use which are more proprietary therefore not mentioned in this article. It is imperative that all of your devices are on the same wireless protocol; otherwise, they will not connect together due to communication issues hence won’t be compatible with your central home automation hub. Although my comments above are correct but at the same time contradictory as traditionally all the central hubs consisted of one protocol but this is changing as in recent months many new hubs have been introducedto have support for two or more protocols which provides the flexibility of choosing a wider range of products that are not a part of the same protocol but yet

to close all the curtains and roller blinds to main privacy from outside. This type of workflow is totally possible based on various trigger points as demonstrated in the example above and therefore the end result is a whole automated process. There are many other factors that can be included in the above example scenario by incorporating IF THIS THEN THAT (IFTTT) conditions such as not to turn the lights on if it is day time or to send notification once the garage door is open etc. I am sure you get the idea behind how flexible home automation can be to program and to do unlimited scenarios. Your imagination is the key. The home automation systems come as DIY or can be professionally installed. Simple ones are easy to DIY but if you are planning a whole home to be automated then my advice would be to engage a professional as they know all the in’s and out’s and what devices to use in various scenarios. work in harmony as the communication translations between these protocols are taken care of within the central hub and behind the scenes.The end result will be the device will work and you will not notice a thing in regards to conversion / communication translations.

trigger would be to switch on the air conditioning to a desired temperature once the car enters the garage. The fourth scene to trigger would be to close the garage door.The fifth scene to trigger would be to open the front door lock and the final sixth scene would be

I hope this article has provided some useful information and has assisted you in understanding a bit more about the home automation technologies. If you are looking for further information then please get in contact with us on info@desiaustralia.com

A central hub will always make it easy for users to automate, schedule, and control scenes and tasks on all of their smart devices, typically via a smartphone or tablet app. Most of the smart home systems also incorporate GPS positioning therefore it is possible to trigger a number of scenes automatically based on distance remaining to your premises. In most cases a possible scenario is to automate lights to come on at night while you are 100 meters away from approaching your home. The second scene to trigger would be to open the garage door once you pull up in your driveway. The third scene to

Wanting to do something to express herself, her personality, something she was passionate about and which would become her identity. Realizing that Events industry was in line with her passion, experience and her love for creativity, Gaytri took a leap of faith and “Sakhi Divas” was formed.

This year Gaytri was joined by Ritika Bhalla to take the event to a new level with novel ideas, even more creativity and a burning passion shared by two people. Themed as the “Vivacious Diva”, the event saw the beautiful ladies of Sydney dressed to express their own unique style statements. With a 4 course meal, sizzling performances, prizes, surprises, games,

free airbrush tattoos and lots of entertainment all under the one roof, the ladies enjoyed a fun packed night. “Kookie’s Coo-My Creative Nest” decorated the venue and provided the props for the night. The event was attended by over 300 attendees, and some of the lucky ladies took home some great titles. Ms Veena sharma won the much coveted title of the night ‘Vivacious Diva’. Ms Kaur Sona won the title of ‘Enchanting Diva’, Ms Elicia took home the title ‘Scintillating

Diva’, while Vinti Anand was awarded the title Best Dressed and Ms Safal Tuli won the ‘Brand Ambassador’ title. Despite the titles being awarded, every woman in attendance was made to feel like a Diva in her own right with a token of appreciation which was generously sponsored by Tuli Jewellers.

What a World - Hanging Coffins Harmohan Singh Walia

W

e humans have come up with some very creative ways of burying or burning dead bodies of our elders in the past and have built tombs, but the most fascinating way was in China, Bo people, an ethnic minority, who used to live on the borders of China’s Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, created hanging burials. They flourished until 400 years ago, when they mysteriously vanished from the area. Nobody is exactly sure what caused their disappearance, but during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) they were persecuted and massacred by the Imperial Army. Nobody even knew these burials were there until 1978, as the cliff face was too smooth to be climbed and they could not be seen from the ground. It wasn’t until archaeologists started to explore the cliffs and excavate in the caves that these unique coffins came to light. These burials are coffins that literally seem to be hanging in the air off the side of a cliff, often in a gorge with a river running through it for several thousand years. So who put them there and how did they do it? There are indeed many more such mysteries still to be solved on this earth, which is great, as it would be very boring if we knew them all. We should not consider our ancestors less intelligent than we are today. So far around 300 hanging coffins have been discovered. The hanging coffins have been found in lots of different shapes and sizes, but most of them are notable for having been crafted from a single piece of wood, many originally with bronze covers, and they were

not painted. They either lie on beams that have been driven into the side of the cliff, were placed on projecting outcrops of rock or were hidden in high up, seemingly inaccessible, caves. The lowest coffins hang about 10 metres in the air while the highest are up around 130 metres. Recently over 40 ancient coffins have been renovated and restored to their places; first cleaning them, then measuring and classifying them before finally recording their contents. A number of interesting grave goods were discovered in the burials, including two blue and white porcelain bowls, an iron knife and a couple of iron spear tips. There was also great excitement when some rock paintings were found, as experts hope that these will help to shed more light on the culture and beliefs of this ancient civilisation. Many interesting artefacts were also found in and around the burials, such as pottery, musical instruments and ornaments carved from jade. The question arises, what was the significance of having coffins suspended so high in the air and how did they hang the coffins? Being buried at a great height might also have symbolised being nearer to the gods, placing the occupant of the coffin closer to the heavens, a spiritual and practical nature for hanging coffins from cliffs. This unique burial custom was carried out to prevent the dead bodies from being eaten by wild animals and was also believed to be a way for the soul of the deceased to gain an eternal blessing. Also the Bo People lived through some troubled times, enduring years of wars, unrest, crop failures and natural disasters. So may be they craved peace and

tranquillity in the after-life, and looked forward to spending eternity surrounded by the beauty of nature. While the Guyue people had slightly different beliefs, as to them the mountains were sacred and they had a deep reverence for high places. A more practical reason that has been put forward is that the higher the coffins could be suspended, then the less likely they were to be broken apart and scavenged by wild animals. Another mystery which has not been solved satisfactorily is how they managed to suspend the coffins from the mountain side. The method they used has been hotly debated by scholars as some think that the coffins were lowered on ropes, built earth ramps to carry the coffins up or drove wooden stakes into the cliff to climb up. The only method where there is evidence for is lowering the coffins over the side, as some of the coffins have marks that show where the ropes rubbed as they were being hung. Since then, many of the hanging coffins that are more accessible have been robbed. The grave goods are gone and the sites disrupted. But many of them are still intact, hidden in caves and crevices and rumoured to contain great amounts of wealth. Luckily, for those who lie in coffins that prove too difficult or dangerous to reach, they rest in peace. Perhaps they are pleased that their families gave them the most auspicious and unreachable sites. The world is still full of wonders to resolve. We do live in a very interesting and wonderful world. So don’t fancy your coffin being hung over the side of the cliff - a nice cliff with good view is better than urn stuffed in the back of a cupboard.

What’s trending this winter “Trench Coat” Dramatic yet classy

Abbey Singh

Y

es winters are here and there are plenty of different styles that are in fashion this winter, though it is to be noted that anything oversized in the coat context shall keep you in the trendy zone. The oversized coats can be tricky to style as there’s a lot of fabric and volume to deal with. The easiest way to work your way around it is to balance the coat with defined pants and shoes. If you match your pants with the shoes

(like, black or grey), you’ll add some height which will help you pull off the coat in a fashionable way. You can go for a sleeveless long coat and pair it up with gloves and snuggle up with a nice scarf.

A floor-length coat is said to be very dramatic and classy. Keep the rest of your outfit very simple so it does not look overboard. You can play with different colours. It is a winter season so you can choose dark and vibrant colours

YouGo with Rajni Let’s Be Mindful Series Welcome to my Mindfulness Series – Let’s Be Mindful. Through this series I will share mindfulness tips and exercises on-the-go that will help you to de-stress and relax. You will learn tips on how to tune out of past and future worries and apprehensions by simply stepping into the present moment. Bring your attention to every thought, belief, emotion and sensation. Rajni Ghai Malhotra

Part 1 – What is Mindfulness - Mindful Breathing We live busy lives in busy times. So many things to get done, so many places to be, so many ideas and conflicting thoughts to juggle. •

Does it ever happen that you’ve beenout walking and found that you’ve walked a few rounds without even realising it?

Or driven a few minutes without actually noticing the route or the traffic around you?

Or sat through a conversation and discovered that your mind had wandered and you had missed what was being said?

Bring your attention to where you are, what you see, what you hear, what you feel and what you experience. To be in a state of awareness of all these and to watch in a non-judgemental manner, not to change anything, but watch just as an observer. Watch and simply let be. Mindful Breathing The easiest and quickest way to becoming more mindful and relaxed is to practice breathing, mindfully.

you may be sitting cross legged in a quiet room, or sitting in your car stuck in traffic, minutes before an interview or presentation, or simply when you are out for a walk.Follow the steps mentioned below. Mindful Breathing Steps: 1. Make yourself comfortable whether you are seated or standing

You, dear friend, are not present in the moment and this is where Mindfulness comes in.

2. Breathe in (Inhale slowly to 6 counts)

What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is about being RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW.

3.

4. Breathe out (Exhale slowly to 8 counts) As you inhale and exhale, focus on your breath and bring your attention to your surroundings.

Simply put, it means to bring your attention to everything within you and around you in the present moment. Your breath is the one thing that goes with you wherever you go. Your breath is with you. The question is, ARE YOU WITH YOUR BREATH? That is the key to mindful breathing. It allows you to connect with yourself through your breath. Mindful breathing can be practiced onthe-go, by focusing on your breath and allowing your mind to reset itself by bringing it into the present moment. You can practice this breathing exercise anywhere and at any time. For instance,

54

Hold your breath (for 2 counts)

5.

Repeat 3-5 times

Even as your mind starts to wander, bring it back to the present moment by taking the next breath and paying attention to it – unhurriedly, just as it is. Voila, you have reset your mind and are ready to go on with your day, mindfully. Yours Mindfully, Rajni Founder, YouGo Yoga and Mindfulness
