orCES loyal to the Turkish government fought on Saturday to crush the remnants of a military coup attempt which crumbled after crowds answered President Tayyip Erdogan’s call to take to the streets and dozens of rebels abandoned their tanks. More than 161 people
— including 41 police, 47 civilians, two military officers and 104 described as “coup plotters” — were killed in clashes that erupted since Friday after a faction of the armed forces attempted to seize power using tanks and attack helicopters, some strafing the headquarters of Turkish intelligence and parliament in Ankara, others seizing a major bridge in Istanbul. accuse the coup plotters of trying to kill him, and promised to purge the armed forces which in the past have staged a number of successful coups. “They will pay a heavy price for this,” he said. “This uprising is a gift from god to us because this will be a reason to cleanse our army.” Turkish authorities have already detained around 2,839 members of the armed forces, officials said.
Chief of staff Hulusi Akar, who had been reported held hostage by the rebels, has been rescued, a senior official said. A successful overthrow of Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey since 2003, would have marked one of the biggest shifts in the Middle East in years, transforming a major uS ally while war rages on its border.

PPP to file reference with nAB AgAinst PM nAwAz, fAMily PARTY SOURCE SAYS DISAPPOINTED BY INACTIVE ECP, PPP CONCRETE EVIDENCE BEING COLLECTED TO MAKE WILL NOW FILE REFERENCE WITH ACCOUNTABILITY WATCHDOG SURE PM, HIS AIDES DO NOT GO SCOT-FREE ISLAMABAD
D
MIAN ABRAR
ISAPPOINTed by inaction of the election Commission of Pakistan (eCP), the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) is all set to move a reference with the country’s top anti-graft body, National Accountability Bureau (NAB), against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and members of his family for their alleged corrupt practices, money laundering, tax evasion and owning offshore companies according to the Panama Papers. A well placed source in the PPP told Pakistan Today that party’s Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari had directed PPP Secretary General Senator Latif Khosa to move the NAB against the Sharif family in a bid to exploit all available legal platforms to seek action by state institutions against the ruling family’s alleged corruption, money laundering and misuse of authority. “The reference is in the process of preparation and concrete evidence is being collected to make sure that the prime minister and his aides do not escape the law,” the source said. Senator Latif Khosa was not available for comments despite repeated calls and text messages by this scribe. Nevertheless, it remain unclear why the PPP seeks action from institutions like the NAB and eCP, which according to analysts, are grossly compromised and have failed time and again to take action against the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). On Friday, the accountability watchdog cleared Finance Minister Ishaq dar,
a close aide to Prime Minister Sharif, of corruption charges, pending against him since the year 2000. The NAB had also failed to take action against Chaudhry Shujaat and other members of his party Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid during its government between 2002 and 2007. The same happened in the case of PPP-Patriots, a breakaway group of PPP rebels. Later, the Bureau also cleared top PPP leaders, including former president Asif Ali Zardari and his close aides, of corruption charges. Asked why the PPP wanted to move the NAB which had been a mere spectator since the exposé made in the Panama leaks, the source said that party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari wanted to exhaust all legal forums before going to the court of masses. “Bilawal does not want to leave any excuse for the ruling party to make a hue and cry when the PPP moves the people’s court. He strongly believes in democratic system and wants to try all forums before going to the masses,” added the PPP source. Asked when the reference is likely to be filed, the source said that preparation on data collection had already been launched and reference would be filed against the premier and his close relatives. documents available with Pakistan Today suggest that the PPP leadership is banking on most of those documents it had earlier filed with the eCP seeking disqualification of the prime minister and his close relatives on corruption charges. The source said documentary
proofs against the prime minister and other members of his family as well as statements of his cousins and other relatives were being collected for filing the reference. Although the PPP source refused to share some ‘exclusive documents’ to be made part of the reference, he shared some of the details with Pakistan Today which are likely to be made part of the reference. MONEY LAUNDERING/FAKE ACCOUNTS: Per documents available with Pakistan Today, the PPP plans to provide documents to the NAB suggesting money-laundering of the Sharif family since 1992. One of the documents alleges that Nawaz Sharif established a solid Monetary Foreign exchange Base abroad in an alleged bid to convert his black money into white money under the facility of economic Reforms Act, 1992. For the purpose, the document alleges, the services of Javed Kayani, a nephew of Sheikh Saeed from Washington, and a director of Rai Textile Mills, Arooj Textile Mills and Chanab Sugar Mills, Sheikh Saeed, a close friend of Nawaz Sharif, were utilised. The document details that in August 1992, Javed Kayani allegedly opened three foreign currency accounts in the name of Suleman Zia, Mohammad Ramzan and Asghar Ali with Habib Bank, AG Zurich Branch, Lahore. Investigation further reveals that these accounts were opened with fictitious identity cards. Investigation proved that foreign exchange and travellers cheques with $ 37,94,762 were deposited and on the

basis of the same, dollar Bearer Certificates (dBCs) worth $ 49,20,000 million were issued, adds the document. The document further alleges that Javed Kayani then opened more fake accounts in the name of Kashif Masood Qazi and Nuzhat Gohar Qazi at the Bank of America, Lahore and Sikandar Masood Qazi at Citibank, Lahore. Both banks were later pressurised into sanctioning substantial loans in respect of Hudaibiya engineering (Pvt) Ltd and Hudaibiya Paper Mills Ltd owned by the Sharif family against cash deposits of $ 1.5 million in account of Kashif Qazi and Sikandar Qazi and $ 500,000 in account of Nuzhat Gohar Qazi. The documents also refer to account numbers of Suleman Zia, Javed Kayani, Qazi and Sheikh Saeed families and others which were allegedly used for money laundering. The documents also refer to the alleged transfer of ‘huge amounts’ of laundered money into offshore accounts of Hassan Nawaz’s Flagship Investments Management Ltd. The documents also include tax returns of the Flagship Investments Management Ltd. PANAMA LEAKS: The list also includes the ostensible/benami offshore assets owned by the Sharif family. These include: 1. One Hyde Park, London, purchased on March 30, 2016 with 42.5 million British pounds. 2. The document alleges that Hill Metals est, Jeddah, one of the leading businesses in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Middle east, is a benami property of Nawaz Sharif.
3. Maryam Nawaz, daughter of PM Nawaz Sharif, is beneficial owner of two offshore companies established in 1993-94. The document alleges that during the establishment of these companies, Hassan, Hussain Nawaz and Maryam were underage and couldn’t own these assets. The companies involved are Nescoll Ltd, Neilson Holdings Ltd, Coomber Group Inc. and Hangun Property Holdings. The PPP alleges that the actual owner of these companies was Nawaz Sharif, who according to the documents had injected sums of money through Hawala/Hundi during his tenure in the public office and later on. The reference will also contain conflicting statements of the Sharif family with regards to the Panama Papers. The reference alleges that the prime minister showed wrong asset details of his wife and children and misled the state institutions about his income tax returns. It also alleges that the prime minister has committed money-laundering. The 46-page confessional statement of Ishaq dar will also be made part of the reference which was recorded with a judicial magistrate. LOAN DEFAULTS: A certificate from the State Bank of Pakistan has also been attached with the reference wherein the Sharif family had been purportedly declared a defaulter of loans worth Rs 6 billion. The PPP claims the Sharifs had been defaulters till 2013 and even if they returned this loan in 2014, the disqualification clause still applied to them, as the last elections were held in the year 2013 on the basis of which they were elected to the assemblies. Repeated attempts were made to contact Federal Minister for Information Pervaiz Rashid for his comments on this development but he was unavailable.
Kashmir issue has fallen victim to Nawaz-Modi friendship, says Bilawal MUZAFFARABAD STAFF REPORT
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has failed to address the Kashmir issue since his foreign policy is based on “friendship with Modi”. “Can’t he [Nawaz Sharif] see the killings of innocent Kashmiri youth and disgrace that Kashmiri women have to face? How many times did he mention Kashmir in the past few days?” he asked to a charged crowd in Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir during electioneering on Saturday. Bilawal said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lacks the wisdom to lead a better foreign policy and have miserably failed in this regard. “Is there a single border where we are not facing tensions?” he asked while referring to the PML-N run foreign policy. Speaking against Indian forces atrocities in Kashmir, PPP chairperson said the oppression in the region has increased to an extent that now the occupying forces are firing pallets bullets on Kashmiri children, making them blind for the rest of their lives. However, he remarked that “in these 68 years, Kashmiris’ passion for freedom has not diminished in any way”. Lambasting the PML-N led government, Bilawal said that the prime minister is not a politician but a businessman who has benefited from running the government.

“In six months, neither did they [PML-N] create electricity nor did the load-shedding end. However, corruption has increased manifold,” he said. Asking the passionate gathering to vote for his party in the impending election, Bilawal said that if the PMLN government is formed here in Azad Kashmir, then I fear the resources of the valley will be taken to the Raiwand State. “I implore the youngsters of Peoples Youth Organisation (PYO) and Peoples Students Federation (PSF) to keep a check on PML-N rigging on the day of election. The youth have greater responsibilities in the upcoming election,” he added. The general elections in Azad Kashmir is scheduled to be held on July 21. On Thursday, Bilawal Bhutto questioned the silence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the latest spate of violence in the valley, terming it
“unfortunate.” Addressing a rally in Rawalakot, the PPP chairman said that the premier had done nothing during the past three years except establishing offshore companies. Bilawal called on the international community to help settle the dispute as per the wishes of the Kashmiri people to ensure durable peace in South Asia. The PPP chairman has also been criticising PM Nawaz for his alleged offshore wealth as exposed by Panama leaks. Leaked documents from the Mossack Fonseca law firm in Panama had showed the prime minister’s three children – sons, Hassan and Hussain, and his daughter, Maryam – owned at least three offshore holding companies registered in the British Virgin Islands. On April 30, Bilawal had urged the premier to resign from his post until investigation into the disclosures is over.

‘Black Day’ against Indian atrocities in Kashmir rescheduled to July 20 ISLAMABAD: Taking back its earlier announcement, the federal government on Saturday decided to observe ‘black day’ against Indian atrocities in India-held Kashmir on July 20 instead of July 19. In a surprising move, the federal cabinet on Friday had decided to observe a countrywide ‘black day’ on July 19 for expressing solidarity with people of India-held Kashmir, several of whom were killed while protesting against the murder of freedom leader Burhan Wani. July 19 is observed every year in renewal of the historical resolution of Kashmir’s accession to Pakistan passed by the people of the state. The All Jammu Kashmir Muslim Conference on July 19, 1947, in Srinagar demanded the then dogra rulers to materialise the accession of the Jammu Kashmir state to Pakistan honouring the decision and point of view of the majority population of the Muslim majority in the state. “Kashmir’s Accession day will be observed on July 19 while nationwide ‘Black day’ will be observed on July 20 to protest the brutalities of Indian forces in Kashmir,” the government announced on Saturday. Indian authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in most parts of IHK after Wani was killed, but massive protests continued despite attempts to suppress violence. Paramilitary troops and police in riot gear patrolled villages and towns in the region. Most shops were shuttered, businesses were closed and cellphone services were suspended. More than 25 people were killed in clashes between Indian troops and protesters. STAFF REPORT
Qandeel Baloch’s murder a lesson for others: Mufti Abdul Qavi LAHORE: Mufti Abdul Qavi, who got suspended from Ruet-e-Hilal Committee membership after selfies with Qandeel Baloch generated a lot of controversy, said the murder of the model is a lesson for others. Reacting on killing of social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch, he said no one should make mockery of Ulema. However, he said, he condemns the murder of Qandeel and he has forgiven her from the core of his heart. Mufti Qavi’s statement sparked criticism on social media. TV anchorperson Meher Bokhari said, “No honour in murder. Shameless Qavi portraying this as a consequence of wrongfully blaming someone. He doesn’t stand purified in Qandeels death.” TV anchorperson Farrukh K Pitafi in a tweet said, “My question to news would be why they air such an irresponsible statement of Qavi which amounts to open threat?” Sukaina Ali said, “Mufti Qavi says he forgives Qandeel Baloch. What a thirdclass banda.” Qandeel was allegedly murdered by her own brother in Multan on Friday night. Qandeel had earlier claimed she was receiving death threats and had sought security. However, following “no response” from the Interior Ministry on her application for getting personal security, social media starlet Qandeel was planning to settle abroad after eidul Fitr, citing security threats in the backdrop of her scandal with Mufti Abdul Qawi as the reason. Qandeel set the social media on fire after she posted on her facebook page at least three selfies of herself with Mufti Abdul Qavi of the Veena Malik fame. STAFF REPORT

He death toll in the latest clashes in the Indian-held Kashmir has risen to 43 with the killing of two more youth by Indian forces and succumbing of another injured on Saturday. The protest was triggered by the killing of top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, Burhan Muzaffar Wani, on July 8. In a bid to crush freedom uprising in the divided Kashmir, television broadcast has been suspended and newspaper offices have been sealed. To prevent coverage of the grave human rights violation in the valley, many journalists have also been picked up. Senior Hurriyat leaders, while extending their strike call for another three days, thanked the Pakistani government for supporting their freedom cause. A youth, Mushtaq Ahmad Ganai, was killed when Indian troops opened fire on protesters at Tangibal Khurmiyal in Lolab area of Kupwara district while another youth identified as Sayar Ahmad Kumar was shot dead by Indian police by firing upon peaceful protesters
at Yaripora in Kulgam, the Kashmir Media Service reported. Meanwhile, a youth, Hilal Ahmad of Batamaloo succumbed to his injuries in a hospital. He had sustained injuries in the firing of police and paramilitary personnel on protesters early this week. Internet and mobile networks across large parts of the territory remained suspended but the blocks have not stopped the spread of unrest. The protesters in
drugmulla area of Kupwara said that Indian police fired upon them while an army helicopter also opened fire and lobbed shells on them. Another report from drugmulla said that army personnel thrashed the attendants who were ferrying injured to Srinagar in a vehicle. Over 2,500 people have been injured so far due to the firing of bullets, pellets and teargas shells by Indian troops and police on peaceful demon-
strations during the ongoing Intifada. More than 120 persons have received pellet injuries in eyes and many of them have lost their eyesight. On the other hand, the Indian forces continue to impose curfew and other restrictions in the territory on the 8th consecutive day on Saturday to stop people from protesting against the innocent killings by Indian forces. Internet service and mobile services have been suspended to stop people from informing the world about the latest situation of the occupied territory. The authorities have put the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Syed Ali Gilani, and all other Hurriyet leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabbir Ahmad Shah, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Shahid-ul-Islam, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Javaid Ahmed Mir, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Zafar Akbar Butt, Qazi Yasir, Ayaz Akbar and many others under house arrest or illegal detention. The action is aimed at preventing the leaders from leading demonstrations against the killings.
Kashmiris’ struggle renewed with commander Burhan’s killing, but at a cost SRINAGAR MUHAMMAD AFFAAN
After being hit by a burst of pellets in his face, twenty-year-old Omar Altaf of Islamabad from South Kashmir is disabled forever. He has lost the vision in his left eye while his right eye has faint sight. His blaring eyes are witness to the mayhem he saw on roads when Indian forces fired pellets. Omar was fired upon with pellets by Indian forces when he was protesting against the killing of militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani. Kashmir witnessed mass protests after Jammu and Kashmir Police declared on July 8, evening that poster boy of “new age” militancy, Burhan Wani, was killed in an operation in South Kashmir. The police chief said that Burhan Wani along with his two local associates was killed in an “encounter” with Indian forces in Bemdoora village of Kokernag area. Bemdoora is a forest village which lies in the high-end tourist destination Kokernag. The village is calm and on that afternoon, which coincided with third eidul Fitr, was taken over by Indian forces. The Indian troops, which included special forces from Special Operations Group (SOG), spread a word that the chief minister was visiting the
area. However, by 7:30 pm, social media was taken by surprise when images of slain Burhan made instant flash news. It may be noted that Burhan Wani was a tech savvy militant who used social media and put forward his word among the youth. His actions were virtual mostly. Following the killing of high-end targets, Kashmiris upped their ante and took to streets. People marched on roads towards Wani’s hometown Tral. Omar said he was protesting peacefully as part of the march which strolled along when the forces came running towards them and fired pellets in which he lost his eyesight. He is admitted to the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital and is being attended by his brother. The worst part is that his parents don’t know that he has lost his eyesight. The reason for that is the cell phone services have been snapped across Kashmir to “contain” the intensity of protests. However, Omar, a driver by profession, said, “I’ve no regrets.” despite a curfew being in place for the past seven days, people including men, women and children, have been holding protests against the Indian occupation in the region. “I have a blurred vision in one of my eyes. It doesn’t really matter,” Omar said. At Valley’s main hospital, named after Kashmir’s
last autocrat, there are over 120 people who are being treated for pellet injuries and a large number of them have lost their eyesight forever, said dr Javaid, a surgeon, who operated upon many of the wounded. The doctors treating the injured said that they have performed 150 eye surgeries in the past seven days and are receiving fresh cases as well. “All of these injured may lose their eyesight,” dr Javaid said. Among the pellet victims is fiveyear-old Zohra. Zohra was hit by a dozen pellets when she along with her mother was outside her house in Srinagar’s Qamarwari area. “Without warning they (police) fired shots from airguns at us,” said Zohra’s mother. What followed the loud bang was a volley of small sharp-edged lead pellets and 12 of them pierced through Zohra’s body. The delhi-backed government has been maintaining that it is a “non-lethal weapon” that helps breaking protests without casualty, but the human rights groups reject the assertion, saying it blinds people and must be banned. In the current protests, it has already consumed two precious lives. “I was out of my home to get medicine for my mother when a group of armed men appeared suddenly and opened fire at me. There
were no protests at the time,” a student said. Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Special director General SN Srivastava told media persons that the pellets are non-lethal weapons. “The lethal weapons are those which kill a person. We don’t use lethal guns on protesters and instead use nonlethal means like the tear smoke shells and the pellet guns. It is very rare that the pellets hit the face or the head,” the CRPF official said. The government also clamped down on cable television, mobile phone networks and internet services in the Valley. Of the 1,365 people who have been injured in clashes, 110 have been admitted with bullet injuries in the three major super specialty hospitals. Over 390 persons are admitted in SMHS, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and Bone and Joints Hospital in Srinagar. They have injuries caused by bullets, pellets, tear gas shells and lathi charge by Indian forces. Questioning the use of live bullets on stone throwing protesters, a senior doctor at SMHS said that the “aim seemed to escalate rather than control”. “How can we justify this wanton use of force? In many cases, bullets and pellets have been fired above the waist. The objective definitely seems to kill or maim the person for life,” the doctor said.
Brother kills Qandeel Baloch in name of ‘honour’ POLICE OFFICIAL SAYS ACCUSED WASEEM HAD BEEN THREATENING HIS SISTER TO STOP POSTING CONTROVERSIAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEOS ON SOCIAL MEDIA MULTAN STAFF REPORT
Popular social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch was killed in Multan on Friday night allegedly by her brother in the name of “honour”. The 26-year-old, who was known for posting risque videos and statements on Facebook, was killed by her brother, Regional Police Officer Sultan Azam told reporters. Qandeel’s brother had been threatening her to stop posting photos and videos on Facebook, the police officer added. Her brother fled after killing Qandeel, whose real name is Fauzia Azeem, but was arrested by police late on Saturday. According to some reporters, the murderer had escaped with Qandeel’s wallet, jewelry and
cell phone. “Qandeel Baloch has been killed, she was suffocated to death by her brother, apparently it was an incident of honour killing,” Sultan Azam said. No marks of torture were found on Qandeel’s body, said another senior police official. The post-mortem of her body was conducted at Multan’s Nishtar Hospital. Qandeel was in Multan to visit her parents as her father had been unwell, and spent eid with her family, her mother told police. Her brother, who was identified by the police as Waseem, went to meet her at night. When Qandeel was asleep at night, he suffocated her by using a pillow. Qandeel’s father Azeem stated in the First Information Report to the police that his sons Aslam Shaheen and Waseem were responsible for their
sister’s death. Azeem said that Aslam allegedly provoked Waseem to kill Qandeel as she reportedly “brought disrepute to the family”. Aslam is currently serving in the army as a Naib Subedar, reads the FIR. The complainant further said that his sons killed Qandeel for her money. “My daughter was brave and I will not forget or forgive her brutal murder,” he said. Responding to reporters’ questions at the police press conference, Waseem said that he had killed his sister Qandeel for posting controversial pictures and videos on Facebook. “She was bringing disrepute to our family’s honour and I could not tolerate it any further. I killed her around 11.30pm on Friday night when everyone else had gone to bed. My brother is not involved in the mur-

der,” said the murderer before being taken away by the police. REqUEST FOR SECURITY IGNORED: Three weeks ago, Qandeel had written to the interior minister, the director general of the Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) and the senior superintendent of Islamabad asking them to provide security to her and has requested action against those who made her identification documents public via social media. She had said her life is in danger and that she is being threatened via calls on her mobile number and that she did not have security measures installed in her home. She wrote: “I need security from you”. WHO IS qANDEEL BALOCH? Baloch, who became famous through her tireless selfpromotion and suggestive “selfies” posted on social media, had amassed tens of thousands of followers. “Nothing is good in this society. This patriarchal society is bad,” Qandeel had said in a recent interview with Images. In one of her last Facebook posts, Qandeel reiterated her un-
apologetic approach: “No matter how many times I will be pushed down under... I am a fighter, I will bounce back.” “Qandeel Baloch [is an] inspiration to ladies who are treated badly... I know you will keep on hating, who cares?” wrote Qandeel, who often referred to herself as a “one-woman army”. She is derided and feted in equal measure in Pakistan, but the popularity of her videos evidence frustrations of many young people tired of being told how to behave. She shot to fame in Pakistan in 2014. earlier this month, Qandeel released a music video which she starred in alongside little known young singer Aryan Khan. Titled ‘Ban,’ the music video touched on Qandeel’s status as a controversial social media icon, and was provocative given Pakistan’s conservative standards for entertainment. days later a man claiming to be Qandeel’s ex-husband made an appearance on TV, saying that Qandeel had a son with him during their brief marriage. Qandeel confirmed his claims, saying she was forced into the marriage.
04 NEWS US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen behind coup plot, Istanbul informs Washington ISTANBUL AGENCIES
Turkey’s foreign minister said on Saturday he had made clear in a call with US counterpart John Kerry that followers of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen were behind the coup attempt, but had not directly discussed the cleric’s possible extradition. A faction of the armed forces, deemed by the government as loyal to Gulen, tried to seize power using tanks and attack helicopters overnight. One hundred and sixty-one people were killed, including many civilians, in the ensuing violence. “The topic of extradition did not come up directly in our conversation yesterday. However, I said very directly once again that this was an attempt by Gulen, who is residing in their country, and his structure within the military,” Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview in Ankara. President Tayyip Erdogan officially designated Gulen’s religious movement a terrorist group in May and said he would pursue its members. Turkey has long been expected to request his extradition from the United States. Cavusoglu said the military now needed to be “cleansed” of Gulenist influence. The reclusive Islamic preacher, who lives in a tiny town in the Pocono Mountains of the US state of Pensylvania, was immediately accused by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday of being behind the coup attempt. His movement, however, denied involvement, saying in a statement that it was committed to democracy and was opposed to any military intervention. “For more than 40 years, Fethullah Gulen and Hizmet participants have advocated for and demonstrated their commitment to, peace and democracy,” the Alliance for Shared Values said in a statement on Friday. “We have consistently denounced military interventions in domestic politics. These are core values of Hizmet participants. We condemn any military intervention in domestic politics of Turkey.”

He said this while talking to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on phone, who called him to inquire about his health. Afghan president also confirmed that Umar Naray, the mastermind of the gruesome attack on Army Public School (APS), had been killed in a drone strike in Afghanistan. He said the dismal incident of APS was a big loss to the world and Pakistan. Nawaz said Pakistan was fighting against terrorism and was fully committed to eliminate the last terrorist on its soil. He said terrorism was a common threat for both countries and must be dealt with concerted efforts and better coordination. Umar Mansour, alias Khalifa Mansour, alias Umar Naray, was killed, along with another militant leader Qari Saifullah, in the US drone attack in the Bandar area of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province on Saturday. A brief statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations on July 14th said that the Commander of the Resolute Support Mission General John Nicholson called Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif and confirmed the death of “terrorist Umar Naray alias Khalifa Umar alias Khalid Khurasani” in Afghanistan. Umar Naray masterminded the December 16, 2014, attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar which left 122 students and 22 teachers and staff dead.

RIME Minister Nawaz Sharif and other national leaders on Saturday strongly condemned the attempt to undermine democracy by a failed coup in Turkey and congratulated its people on saving democracy. In a statement, PM Sharif said, “We deeply admire the resolve of the brave and resilient Turkish people, who stood up against the forces of darkness and anarchy to express their support and commitment to democracy. We express our complete support and solidarity with President Recep Erdogan, the democratically-elected government of Turkey and democratic institutions of Turkey.” He said that Pakistan reaffirmed its abiding interest in a democratic, peaceful and stable Turkey, adding, “We highly value our strong and historic ties with Turkey.
The premier further said, “We wish to convey our prayers and good wishes for President Erdogan’s well-being and welfare of the people of Turkey as well as the unity of the Islamic Ummah.” “I wish to reaffirm full support of the government and people of Pakistan to the elected leadership and government and the people of Turkey,” concluded PM Sharif. Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari condemned the attempted coup in Turkey, and expressed the hope that it would come out as a stronger democracy and stronger nation after quashing the coup. “The people of Turkey deserve to be complimented for coming out on the streets and facing military tanks and artillery with bare hands to force the coup makers run,” he said, adding, “Democratic forces anywhere therefore would celebrate the triumph of democracy and the defeat of coup makers in Turkey.” Bilawal further said that the Turkish opposition parties and President Erdogan’s courageous leadership during the
crisis was also most commendable. Meanwhile, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi telephoned Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and expressed solidarity of the people and government of Pakistan with the Turkish government and democratic institutions. In a statement released from his secretariat, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the military coup in Turkey was a conspiracy against progress and prosperity of the masses which the Turkish people have foiled through their unity and spirit of patriotism. Sharif felicitated Turkish President Erdogan, Prime Minister Bin Ali Yildirim, other leaders and Turkish people on behalf of the people of Pakistan over the failure of the conspiracy against democracy. He said it was a proof that Turkish people loved their president and were committed to democracy, adding that the Turkish people had practically proved their commitment to the concept of rule of people.
Turks fail military coup, consolidate Erdogan’s rule COTINUED FROM PAGE 01 However, a failed coup attempt could still destabilise a NATO member that lies between the European Union and the chaos of Syria, with Islamic State bombers targeting Turkish cities and the government also at war with Kurdish separatists. Erdogan, who had been holidaying on the southwest coast when the coup was launched, flew into Istanbul before dawn on Saturday and was shown on TV outside Ataturk Airport. Addressing a crowd of thousands of flag-waving supporters at the airport later, Erdogan said the government remained at the helm, although disturbances continued in Ankara. Erdogan said the plotters had tried to attack him in the resort town of Marmaris. “They bombed places I had departed right after I was gone,” he said. “They probably thought we were still there.” The death toll has risen to 90, staterun Anadolu Agency reported, with 1,154 people wounded. Turkish authorities have detained 1,563 military personnel across the country. ‘No more coups for Turkey’: Turkey’s acting chief of staff Umit Dundar on Saturday said the country has “closed the chapter of coups for good, never to be opened again”. Giving details to media representatives on how the bid to overthrow a democratically-elected government was thwarted, Dundar said: “Swift measures by our police and prosecutors and standing by democracy and rule of law prevented the coup attempt.” Turkey’s senior military command was against the idea of overthrowing an elected government from the “very start”, Dundar said. He added that the coup was attempted “largely by troops from air force, gendarmerie and some armoured elements”. Close to 200 unarmed soldiers at the Turkish military headquarters surrendered to state authorities, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported. Turkish authorities also removed 2,745 judges from duty on Saturday,
broadcaster NTV reported, citing a decision by the High Council of Judges and Prosectors (HSYK). Five members of HSYK, Turkey’s highest judiciary board, were also removed, state-run Anadolu Agency reported. smarT phoNe address: In a night that sometimes verged on the bizarre, Erdogan used social media to speak to the Turkish people - even though he is an avowed enemy of such technology when his opponents use it, frequently targeting Twitter and Facebook. At one point Erdogan effectively addressed the nation via a video calling service, appearing on the smart phone of a CNN Turk reporter who held it up to a studio camera so that viewers to the network could see him. The pro-coup faction said in an emailed statement from the Turkish military General Staff’s media office address that it was determinedly still fighting. Calling itself the Peace at Home Movement, the faction also called on people to stay indoors for their own safety. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said rebel soldiers who had taken control of

military aircraft had fired from the air and fighter jets had been scrambled to intercept them. Gunfire and explosions had rocked both Istanbul and Ankara in a chaotic night after soldiers took up positions in both cities and ordered state television to read out a statement declaring they had taken power. However, by dawn the noise of fighting had died down considerably. Around 50 soldiers involved in the coup surrendered on one of the bridges across the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul after dawn on Saturday, abandoning their tanks with their hands raised in the air. Reuters witnesses saw government supporters attack the pro-coup soldiers who had surrendered. Earlier, around 30 pro-coup soldiers had surrendered their weapons after being surrounded by armed police in Istanbul’s central Taksim Square. Lawmakers iN hidiNg: The coup began with warplanes and helicopters roaring over Ankara and troops moving in to seal off the bridges over the Bosphorus Strait that links Europe and Asia in Istanbul.
Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid also commended the people of Turkey for thwarting the military coup attempt and protecting the democratic system. Talking to state-run Pakistan Television, Rashid said Turkey had become the first Muslim country that had foiled martial law attempt with the help and support of the people and it was made possible due to democracy. “Thwarting the military coup with the power of the masses is also good gesture for all Islamic countries and Turkey deserves congratulations for this,” he said. In his statement, Jamaat-e-Islami chief Sirajul Haq congratulated Turkish President Erdogan on the failure of the coup attempt against him. He said the Turkish people foiled the mutiny by a small group of Turkish army, demonstrating their deep love for the elected leadership. He said it was a message for the world that nobody could harm a true democracy. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf also hailed the people of Turkey for saving democracy. “Turkey proves once again that biggest defence of democracy is not constitution or laws but citizens who own the system as their own,” PTI legislator Asad Umar said in a tweet. Authorities had shut the strait to tanker traffic, shipping agent GAC said. In the early hours of Saturday, lawmakers were hiding in shelters inside the parliament building, which was being fired on by tanks. Smoke rose up from nearby, Reuters witnesses said. An opposition MP told Reuters parliament was hit three times and that people had been wounded. A senior Turkish official said later on Saturday attacks on the parliament had “largely stopped”. A Turkish military commander also said fighter jets had shot down a helicopter used by the coup plotters over Ankara. State-run Anadolu news agency said 17 police were killed at special forces headquarters there. Momentum turned against the coup plotters as the night wore on. Crowds defied orders to stay indoors, gathering at major squares in Istanbul and Ankara, waving flags and chanting. “We have a prime minister, we have a chief of command, we’re not going to leave this country to degenerates,” shouted one man, as groups of government supporters climbed onto a tank near Ataturk airport. Erdogan and other officials blamed the attempted coup on followers of Fethullah Gulen, an influential cleric in self-imposed exile in the United States who once supported Erdogan but became a nemesis. The pro-Gulen Alliance for Shared Values said it condemned any military intervention in domestic politics. US Secretary of State John Kerry said he phoned the Turkish foreign minister and emphasised “absolute support for Turkey’s democratically elected, civilian government and democratic institutions”. European Council President Donald Tusk called for a swift return to Turkey’s constitutional order, saying tensions there could not be resolved by guns. fLighTs resume: Flag carrier Turkish Airways resumed flights on Saturday, Erdogan said. Malaysia Airports, the operator of Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, Istanbul’s second airport, said it would continue to process flights in and out of Turkey. Soldiers took control of TRT state television, which announced a countrywide curfew and martial law.

ORLD leaders urged “respect for democratic institutions” in key NATO member and European neighbour Turkey as parts of the military launched a coup attempt late Friday against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that saw violence erupt in Istanbul. The United States, Russia, NATO and the European Union appealed for stability, with US President Barack Obama calling on all parties in Turkey to back the “democratically-elected” government. Detailing a call between Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, the White House said both agreed that “all parties in Turkey should support the democratically-elected government of Turkey, show restraint, and avoid any violence or bloodshed.” UN chief Ban Kimoon meanwhile lashed out against the attempted coup, as he called for civilian rule to be maintained. “Military interference in the affairs of any state is unacceptable,” Ban said in a statement. EU chiefs Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker backed Erdo-
gan’s government and urged a “swift return” to normal. “Turkey is a key partner for the European Union. The EU fully supports the democratically elected government, the institutions of the country and the rule of law,” they said in a joint statement with EU foreign policy head Federica Mogherini. “We call for a swift return to Turkey’s constitutional order.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Moscow was “deeply concerned” about the situation, with President Vladimir Putin being kept up to date by the foreign ministry and intelligence services. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had earlier called on Turkey to avoid all “bloodshed” and insisted that the problems in the country be resolved “in accordance with the constitution.” Turkey will now likely dominate an EU foreign ministers’ meeting on Monday which will also be attended by Kerry. Ankara in March signed a controversial deal with the European Union aimed at stemming migration to the continent, and has recently mended ties with Russia after a major diplomatic crisis. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg called for
“calm and restraint, and full respect for Turkey’s democratic institutions and its constitution,” adding that the country was “a valued NATO ally”. Obama, like other Western leaders, has repeatedly expressed concern about authoritarian steps taken by Erdogan’s government. But the country is a key NATO ally and part of the coalition fighting Islamic State in neighbouring Syria and Iraq. The US has military assets at Incirlik Air Base, carrying out strikes against the militants. The ongoing coup attempt is not affecting operations targeting IS, and American forces will continue flying missions from a key airbase there, a US defence official said Friday. The situation “has no impact on counter-IS operations from Incirlik Air Base in Turkey,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity, and using another name for IS. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton urged “calm and respect for laws, institutions, and basic human rights and freedoms” in the country. The French Foreign Ministry meanwhile called for “the avoidance of violence and respect for democratic order,” in an appeal echoed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “Support to the elected (Turkish) government,” a spokesman for Merkel said. “Everything must be done to protect human lives.” German-Turkish relations have come under increasing strain in re-
cent months, with Berlin criticising Ankara’s tough line against dissenting journalists and the country’s Kurdish minority. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also said his country, which neighbours Turkey, was monitoring the situation with “great concern”. “Stability, democracy and the security of the Turks are the priority,” Zarif said, according to the Iranian government website, as he stressed “the need to preserve unity” in the country. Iran and Turkey have been at loggerheads in regional conflicts including Syria, where they back opposing sides in the five-year civil war. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, whose nation also neighbours Turkey, has meanwhile expressed his “support for the democratically elected” government following the attempted coup, a government source said early Saturday. Tsipras’ diplomatic advisor sent the “message of support for democracy in Turkey” to his counterpart in the crisis-hit nation, the source said. The two leaders were set to speak by telephone later Saturday. Television pictures showed tanks deployed outside Ataturk airport in Istanbul. Reports said that flights into the airport had been halted. Greece’s Aegean Airlines confirmed it had cancelled Saturday’s flights to Istanbul and the coastal city of Izmir. German carrier Lufthansa said it had delayed its flights to Turkey “for up to 12 hours”.
Protests and bloodshed in coup-hit Istanbul ISTANBUL Agencies
Troops filed into Taksim Square uncertain of how they would be received. Before long, angry crowds had gathered to denounce them. In the famous square where anti-government protests took hold in 2013, a huge crowd chanted against the putsch, draped with Turkish flags across their shoulders. The scenes were reminiscent of the mass demonstrations three years ago against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was then prime minister. But this time, the crowds were on his side — and it was the military, badly outnumbered at a hundred against a thousand, who were the target of their ire. “Military get out,” they chanted, crowding around a monument that marks the birth of the Turkish republic almost a century ago. “The people are afraid of a military government,” said Dogan, 38. “Most of them have been in military service - they know what a military
government would mean.” As a helicopter flew overhead the crowd began to boo, shaking their fists at the night sky. Then there was horror as the soldiers opened fire. At least three people were hit. One man lay bloodied on the ground. Ambulances arrived, their blue lights illuminating the angry faces of the crowd. “The military, they did this! Murderers!” screamed one man above the shouts of the crowd. Minutes later riot police poured out of trucks, brandishing their shields and clearing the space. Crowds gathered on the side streets straining for a glimpse as an eerie quiet descended. Smatterings of gunfire echoed across the almost empty square. The occasional ambulance streaked across space, as white police vans stood guard. Soldiers also opened fire at thousands of civilians trying to cross the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge across the Bosphorus by foot, a photographer witnessed, leaving tens of people injured. One man stood stunned in the street nearby, a bloodied Turkish flag stuck to his chest. Crowds
gathered around an elderly man receiving CPR. ‘BrOTHErS SHOuLD NOT SpiLL BLOOD’: Shops had closed hurriedly as news of the coup attempt broke. Dozens queued at ATMs to get money, worried about what the next days might bring. In the bustling streets of Istanbul’s Sisli neighbourhood, people panic-bought water before disappearing into their homes, from where the loud sounds of live news broadcasts rang out. Parts of Istanbul were left looking like a ghost town, and it was not until hours later that the crowds took to the streets, possibly heeding a call by Erdogan for the public to come out and resist the coup. The two bridges that connect the European and Asian sides of the Bosphorus — usually packed with cars at all hours — were devoid of traffic. But at one bar at least, a group of young men stayed defiantly in their seats, saying they would not leave their tables or their drinks. No military coup would stop them enjoying a Friday night in Besiktas, a hip neighbourhood on Istanbul’s European side.
Turkey’s army: one of the best-trained in the world LONDON: A section of the Turkish military, the secondlargest army in NATO after the United States’, caught the world off guard on Friday by staging an attempted coup. The move stunned Turkey observers, who believed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Islamic-rooted Justice and Development Party had brought the secular-minded army to heel. Acting army Chief General Umit Dundar announced Saturday the putsch had been foiled. The Turkish army, which comprises 510,600 troops, down from around 800,000 in 1985, is considered one of the best trained in the world. Over the past year it has been focusing most of its energies on fighting separatists from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the south-east and carrying out air strikes against PKK bases across the border in northern Iraq. Hundreds of Turkish military personnel have been killed in the fighting which restarted after the collapse of a two-and-a-half-year truce in mid-2015. Turkey last year also joined the US-led coalition that has been pummelling Islamic State jihadists in Syria from the air. According to 2016 figures from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), the country has 402,000 soldiers (77,000 professionals and NCOs/325,000 conscripts) in its land force, 48,600 in the navy (14,100/34,500) and 60,000 in the air force. Added to this are more than 100,000 members of the gendarmerie, or paramilitary police, who fall under the command of the Ministry of the Interior rather than National Defence, according to figures from 2015. Turkey also has a total of nearly 400,000 reservists in the three services. The navy has 13 submarines, 18 frigates and six corvettes, while the air force can currently draw on over 200 F-16s, the second-biggest number after the United States. “The airforce is well equipped and well trained,” the IISS report said. Security intelligence group Jane’s says the land army has also come a long way since the early 1990s, developing “highly mobile forces with greatly enhanced firepower.” Agencies
Greece to examine Turkish soldiers’ asylum requests ATHENS: Greece will examine the request for political asylum by eight Turkish soldiers who fled to Greece in a helicopter earlier on Saturday, two Greek government sources said. Greece arrested the men after they landed in the northern Greek city of Alexandroupolis. They are due to appear before a Greek prosecutor on Sunday, one of the officials said. The Black Hawk helicopter the soldiers fled in will be returned to Turkey immediately, the sources said. Agencies
Turkey Mideast allies rally behind strongman Erdogan DOHA: Turkey’s regional allies on Saturday condemned a deadly but foiled coup attempt by a faction of the army against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s rule. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif spoke with his Turkish counterpart three times since the crisis began. On Twitter, he hailed the Turkish people’s “defence of democracy & their elected government” which he said “proves that coups have no place in our region and are doomed to fail.” “Deeply concerned about the crisis in Turkey,” Zarif tweeted late on Friday. A Saudi foreign ministry official said in a statement that the kingdom “had followed with much concern developments in brotherly Turkey” and “welcomes the return of the situation to normal under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his elected government.” Qatar was the first Gulf Arab state to condemn the coup attempt and later congratulate Erdogan. In a telephone call with the Turkish leader, Qatari emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani “congratulated (Erdogan) on the support of the people of Turkey on his rule against the failed military coup,” the official QNA news agency reported. Coup bid in Turkey carried live on social media despite blockages SAN FRANCISCO Agencies
The attempted military coup in Turkey exploded across social media late on Friday despite restricted access to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube during the first hours of the putsch. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, an avowed enemy of social media who has frequently made Twitter and Facebook a target, addressed the country via a FaceTime video call that was shown on TV. He also tweeted: “I call our nation to the airports and the squares to take ownership of our democracy and our national will” and retweeted posts from the prime minister and the official presidency account condemning the coup. Critics of Erdogan were quick to note the irony of his using a medium that he has repeatedly denounced to save his own presidency. At the same time, both supporters and opponents of the coup inundated social net-
works with commentary and images, many of them live videos. Vivid but often confusing scenes from Turkey unfolded on screens across the world as videos showed explosions at the Turkish parliament, helicopters firing on protesters and opponents of the coup standing in front of tanks. “It’s almost 2am and mosques across Istanbul are relentlessly calling people to the streets to resist and protest the military coup,” wrote Twitter user Ceylan Yeginsu. Backers of the coup criticised Erdogan’s rule, using social media to urge government opponents to take to the streets. A map of all Facebook Live videos showed dozens of live streams coming out of Turkey, including videos of hundreds of people, gathered out on the streets. On Twitter, users shared images and videos of scenes in Istanbul and Ankara, with gunshots heard in the background of some videos. Turkey’s military said on Friday it
had seized power, but the prime minister said the attempted coup would be put down and Erdogan himself later vowed to
punish the plotters. During the initial phases of the uprising by a section of the military, it was difficult or impossible to
access social media for many users except by using a “virtual private network” to bypass local internet providers, local residents, and monitoring groups said. Twitter said it suspected an “intentional slowing” of its traffic. YouTube said it was aware of reports that its site was down in Turkey although it was not experiencing any apparent technical difficulties, indicating that an order to restrict access came from within Turkey. It was not immediately clear whether the government or another actor ordered blockages, but it later appeared that service had been restored. Hotspot Shield, an app that allows users to connect to virtual private networks, said it saw a more than 300 percent increase in new downloads in Turkey within two hours of the coup becoming public knowledge. The Turkish government under Erdogan has repeatedly moved to block social media in periods of crisis and political uncertainty.

F you travel up country from Karachi, you may spot billboard on all the roads of the port city leading towards the Superhighway, guiding visitors to a Pakistan Army residential, commercial and mixed-use elements project, DHA City. Almost 56 km from the city’s core area of Karachi, 35 km from the Jinnah International Airport (JIA) and 26 km from Karachi’s Toll Plaza, the DHA City has been envisioned as ‘the first sustainable city of Pakistan’, which will serve as a model for future independent cities in the country. Spreading over 19,640 acres of land, the DHA City has almost all the facilities and luxuries available in a city. Besides the residential and commercial plots, DHA City is offering villas, farmhouses and a golf resort within. With its own dedicated water and energy resources, DHA City Karachi will also house an Institute of Business Administration (IBA) campus, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) teaching hospital, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust (SKMT) cancer hospital as well as a research centre. To connect the DHA City Karachi with the DHA, the project developers have planned Malir Motorway; the Sindh government has allocated funds for its development in the 2016-17 budget. The Motorway will cut down hour-long journey into just a 20 minute drive. The project was started five years ago, but the development work was sped up in the second half of 2012. The DHA City project developer claims that the best engineering practices are being followed in the design and construction of the project, but a moderate rain in the last month exposed loopholes in the infrastructure of the much-awaited housing project.
A day-long visit of the DHA City Karachi revealed that the rainwater had damaged the recently constructed roads network of the project, raising questions about the design of the project and the material used in its construction. Unfortunately, even the moderate amount of rainfall that the city receives appears to be causing a disproportionately high amount of damage to the project. Although the construction of houses, villas and farmhouses is yet to start at the DHA City Karachi, the rainwater has already caused breaches in the roads and the sewage network. The boundary wall of the 19,640 acres piece has been damaged at various points. The roads in Sector 5 and Sector 9 were also damaged badly in the rain. The project administration placed pieces of blocks and stones around the damaged roads to block the vehicular traffic. In some places, damaged roads were seen cordoned off with ropes. As the DHA City Karachi project was launched on a semi-hilly piece of land, at some
places pieces of hills were seen fallen on the lower lying areas. ‘DHA NOT ACCEPTABLE’: Just one kilometre away from the project site, billboards and hoardings were seen chalked with slogans ‘DHA is not acceptable’. When the residents of the adjoining areas were interviewed, they claimed that the army is trying to increase its presence by launching housing project in the area. They were of the view that the DHA City Karachi is extending the project as they acquired 8,000 acres of land in 2014 and that the extension of the project is a threat to the rural culture. “We will not allow anyone to destroy our culture and will take steps if need to save our decades of norms and values,” they added. DHA City Karachi has two villages within its boundary wall; Haji Allahdad Goth and Kareemdad Goth. When the residents of the two villages were questioned about this project, they said they had not been forced to vacate the land by
the project management. “We have been living here for a decade and will not leave at any cost,” they said. NOTHING LACKING IN CONSTRUCTION OR DESIGN: Talking to Pakistan Today in his office, DHA Administrator Brig Zubair Ahmed said that the DHA had tried to ensure the best engineering practices in the design and construction of the DHA City Karachi’s infrastructure. The DHA administrator praised the efforts of Pakistan Today in identifying infrastructure problems of the DHA City Karachi. “Despite our efforts, some loopholes have surfaced in the infrastructure, but we are tackling these faults seriously,” Brig Ahmed claimed, adding, “We are looking at whether it was the weather, design or materials that caused the problems.” “There is usually no rain in Karachi, but this year the city received heavy showers which created problems,” Brig Zubair said, adding, “Rainwater devastated infrastructure in the US and China
too, so, we can’t underestimate the water’s destructive qualities.” However, Brig Zubair rejected impression that the locals were unhappy about the project and maintained that the DHA City has included two villages within the city which fall in Sector 6 and the theme park respectively and that it had established a school and a dispensary for the residents of the two areas. “Not one protest has been held against the DHA City Karachi since the start of the project, even though people have protested against other projects,” he pointed out. The DHA administrator claimed that the locals are supporting the DHA and that they, in turn, are creating job opportunities for them. “DHA is a trendsetter and we are reaping rewards of the credibility we earned in the past,” Brig Ahmed said, and pointed out that the prices of plots of the DHA had escalated 400pc in the last two years which indicated the success of the project.

Centre deprived Sindh of its due share in funds: Chandio KARACHI STAFF REPORT
Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister for Information and Archives Moula Bux Chandio said on Saturday that the PML-N government should activate the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Indus River System Authority (Irsa) and Wapda in real manner ahead of expected flood nd provide sufficient funds to Sindh for strengthening Indus River’s dykes. “Though the work of strengthening dykes of Indus River, taking precautionary measures and allocating all required emergency funds in view of expected floods is supposed to be carried out by
the federal government, but this work is being done by the Sindh government alone. The Centre have deprived Sindh of due share in funds including those for flood protection, while share from gas and oil resources have also been reduced by 50 per cent which is great injustice”. He said the province had even been deprived of payment of the curtailed share since last three years. He said the PML-government also seemed lethargic in activating NDMA, IRSA and Wapda in real manner as these national institutions need to prepare a joint national action plan and coordinate with the provincial governments, including Sindh. The federal government needs to
provide necessary technical assistance and special financial assistance to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (Sindh) for tackling expected floods, he said. The adviser said that the Sindh government had taken proper measures to tackle expected floods from Indus River. “Floods are likely to hit Sindh, and therefore, precautionary measures are necessary to be taken forthwith,” he said. “All district governments in Sindh should also devise their comprehensive plans in view of expected floods and heavy rains forecast. They should monitor the sensitive points of River Indus dykes and strengthen all vulnerable

points of all dykes.” He said that hospitals across Sindh should also establish their strategic plans to meet any emergency situations during floods. Chandio also advised the Sindh Irrigation and Drainage Authority (SIDA) and district governments in Sindh to cleanse water channels and strengthen River Indus’s dykes ahead of floods so as to avoid human and financial losses. All successive PPP governments, under the dynamic leadership of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari paid great attention towards flood issues and provided relief to all affectees, he added.

The officials wanted to question Kharal about his alleged role in two corruption cases worth Rs 500 million, in addition to being links with criminals, sources said. However, the incident resulted in escape of the corruption accused. Rangers on Friday raided the home
of Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal in Larkana, in connection with the arrest of a suspect wanted by the paramilitary force. They were on the lookout for a suspect Asad Kharal. It has been alleged that Asad Kharal has close links with the brother of Sohail Anwar Siyal. The Rangers had also detained 10 people including former naib nazim Abid Bughio. The Rangers recently said that they have launched a comprehensive operation against criminals and militants in interior of Sindh. DG Rangers Major General Bilal Akbar had said that the operation has been launched under the National Action Plan.

The dreaded deporTaTions ThaT would surge under Trump TIJUANA
T
AGENCIES
HE bell rings at the gate of the Tijuana border post as US agents return 12 Mexicans home with their belongings inside paper bags and backpacks. Such deportations occur on a regular basis, but they could increase exponentially if Donald Trump — set to be confirmed as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate next week — wins the election in November and makes good on his promise to expel millions of undocumented immigrants. At the San Ysidro border station, most of the deportees look on dejectedly, several of them lacking any identification, as a Mexican agent unlocks a metal door and interrogates them to make sure they are really Mexican. “Where are you from?” he asks. “What’s near that town? Do you have ‘pisto?’” That’s a trick question. “Pisto” is Central American slang for money, a term not used in Mexico. After they pass the improvised citizenship test, the migrants walk through a
wooden door into the El Chaparral repatriation center. “Welcome home,” reads a sign in Spanish. “Goodbye America!” says a migrant looking back wistfully. Some 30,000 of the 207,000 Mexicans deported from the United States last year were sent back through the San Ysidro gate — which separates Tijuana and San Diego, California — according to Mexican government figures. Children, unaccompanied teenagers, pregnant women and elderly people are taken through the gate. Some are returned shortly after crossing the border illegally, others have unsuccessfully tried passing the border bridge with fake IDs or had lived in the United States for years. Trump has angered Mexicans by vowing to build a massive wall to block such illegal crossings by people he has described as “rapists” and drug dealers. Juan Carlos, a 35-year-old day laborer from the northern state of Sinaloa who was among those recently deported, suggests another idea for Trump. “It would be better for this gentleman to help so that we
could get paid better here and not go over there,” he said. Juan Carlos, who declined to give his last name, was wearing a shirt still covered with dirt from hiding in the hills when he snuck across the border. Now he was eating a sandwich provided by the Mexican authorities as he sat in the El Chaparral waiting room expecting a repatriation document along with others. He planned to make another attempt to cross the border. “They threatened to send me to prison if I returned,” he said, adding, “I will go back.” Javil Cortez, 28, illegally crossed the border because he wanted to “be someone in life.” The farmer had hoped to improve the lives of his four children in the violent western state of Michoacan. Unlike Juan Carlos, he planned to go home. Millions of people have been deported from the United States in recent years. Latino advocates call US President Barack Obama the “deporterin-chief.” But Obama has also sought to spare millions from deportations in a program recently blocked by the Supreme Court.
For his part, Trump has vowed to deport the 11 million undocumented migrants in the United States, most from Mexico. “As long as I can remember, there has been anti-Mexican feelings, xenophobia,” said Nancy Landa, who migrated to Los Angeles at the age of nine but was deported through El Chaparral 20 years later because she lacked proper documents. “It’s a problem of ignorance about the reasons why people migrate.” Landa, who earned a degree with honours in business administration in California, is among two million so-called “Dreamers” — undocumented migrants who arrived in the United States as children. She is among 200,000 Dreamers sent back since 2009 to a country she didn’t know, with no Mexican documents. “It’s complicated. People noticed from my Spanish that I wasn’t from here,” said Landa, who initially worked in a call centre thanks to her English skills and now lives in southern Mexico. “For a while, I felt that there was a stigma attached to a person who was deported because they
think that you have a criminal record,” she added. Deportations have split up many families. Border cities such as Tijuana have become refuges for those who have been expelled but want to stay close to relatives remaining in the United States. Yolanda Varona, 49, was deported in 2010 after living in California for 17 years with an expired tourist visa. She left behind two sons. Varona founded the Dreamers’ Moms group. Every Thursday, she and other deported mothers and fathers — many with US-born children on the other side — meet to talk and cope with their pain. Trump is not popular in the room. “I think that this gentleman is
sick,” Varona said. “Not all Mexicans are thieves or rapists or ignorant. I think that we have helped the United States become such a powerful nation.” But around half of foreigners deported by the United States are criminals, according to the US Homeland Security Department. Mauricio Hernandez-Mata was deported in 2010 after serving prison time for drugs and illegal gun possession. But the 34-year-old Mexican, who was raised in San Diego, said he deserved better treatment after his US military service in Afghanistan in 2004-2005. “Everything I did was from the heart,” he said. “My actions must be taken into consideration.”
Obama condemns call to deport US Muslims who believe in Sharia WASHINGTON AGENCIES
China calls for greater global cooperation against terrorism ULAANBATOR: Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called on Saturday for greater global cooperation against terrorism, state media said, as the Asian giant seeks greater international support for its antiterror fight. Speaking at an Asia-Europe summit, Li said various security challenges conventional and unconventional remain prominent even though those regions had remained generally stable and peaceful. “Acts of terrorism are common challenges faced by every nation. Countries should work more closely to fight terrorism, and build societies that are truly open and tolerant so to root out the soil where it grows,” said Li. China has sought Western support for its own “war on terror” since the attacks in Paris last November. Hundreds of people have been killed in the past few years in China’s western region of Xinjiang, home to the mainly Muslim Uighur people. The government blames the violence on Islamist militants who want to establish an independent state called East Turkestan. But rights groups say Beijing’s repressive policies in the region have fueled the unrest, a charge the government denies. Western countries have generally been reluctant to share intelligence with China or otherwise cooperate, while independent experts on Uighur issues have said China has provided little evidence to prove the existence of a cohesive militant group operating in Xinjiang. President Barack Obama strongly condemned what he called a “repugnant” proposal by a top Republican to test every Muslim living in the United States and deport whoever believes in Sharia law, following the deadly truck attack in Nice. “In the wake of last night’s attacks, we’ve heard more suggestions that all Muslims in America be targeted, tested for their beliefs, some deported or jailed,” Obama said, referring to a proposal by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. “And the very suggestion is repugnant and an affront to everything that we stand for as Americans. We cannot give in to fear or turn on
each other or sacrifice our way of life.” French officials said that the man who rammed his truck into a crowd in Nice on Thursday during Bastille Day celebrations, killing at least 84 people, was a “terrorist” born in Tunisia who likely had links to violent extremists. Gingrich, who had been in the running to become Republican presidential contender Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick but was ultimately passed over, unleashed harsh new anti-Muslim rhetoric after the Nice attack. “Western civilisation is in a war,” Gingrich told Fox News on Thursday. “We should frankly test every person from here who is from a Muslim background and if they believe in Sharia law they should be deported. It is incompatible with Western civilisation.”
S Korea premier pelted with eggs, bottles over missile site SEOUL AGENCIES
Angry residents in a rural South Korean town threw eggs and water bottles at the
prime minister and blocked him for more than six hours Friday to protest a plan to deploy an advanced U.S. missile defense system in their neighborhood. Earlier this week, South Korea an-
nounced that the missile system called Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, will be placed in the southeastern farming town of Seongju by the end of next year to better cope with North Ko-
rean threats. Seongju residents launched protests, saying they fear possible health hazards from the missile system. Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, accompanied by the defense minister and others, visited Seongju to try to explain the decision to residents but was immediately disrupted by jeers. Some hurled eggs and water bottles, shouting “We oppose (the THAAD deployment) with our lives,” according to TV footage. A senior police officer was injured on his forehead. Hwang didn’t appear to be directly hit by any objects as security guards and aides used umbrellas and bags to protect him. But his suit jacket was tainted by eggs and he evacuated to a town hall office. When he and the others came out of the building into a minibus, they were surrounded by hundreds of protesters, some using tractors. Hwang was held in the bus for more than six hours. South Korean officials have dismissed as groundless a belief that THAAD radar systems emit electromagnetic waves that can cause health problems. Defense officials say the U.S. system is harmless if people stay at least 100 meters (yards) away from it. Seongju residents criticized the government for unilaterally deciding on the deployment without consulting them. About 200 Seongju residents made a protest visit to Seoul’s Defense Ministry on Wednesday, and some wrote letters of complaint in blood. A group of 13 local leaders went on a hunger strike. Defense Minister Han Min Koo told residents Wednesday he would personally stand in front of the radars to prove they aren’t harmful.

HE Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the truck attack that killed 84 people in Nice on France’s national holiday, the media reported on Saturday. Amaq quoted an Islamic State security source as saying one of its ‘soldiers’ carried out Thursday’s carnage “in response to calls to target nations of coalition states that are fighting (IS)”. Four men believed to be linked to the Tunisian who killed 84 people when he drove a truck into a Bastille Day crowd in Nice were arrested overnight Saturday, a judicial source said. The 31-year-old driver of a truck who killed scores of people on the Nice seafront was a Tunisian petty criminal described by neighbours as an unfriendly loner who showed no outward sign of being a devout Muslim. Investigators were on Friday piecing together a picture of the father-of-three who slammed into crowds who had been watching a Bastille Day fireworks display, killing 84 people including 10 children and adolescents. Anti-terrorism prosecutor Francois Molins identified him as Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, “a delivery man, of Tunisian nationality, married and with children” adding that he had a criminal record but no known terrorist connection. His identity papers and a bank card were found in the truck and his identity had been confirmed by fingerprints, he said. Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was shot dead by police at the wheel of the 19-tonne lorry. As forensic scientists, backed by armed police, searched his apartment in a four-storey block in a working-class neighbourhood of Nice, neighbours told AFP they had little to do with him. They portrayed him as a solitary figure who rarely spoke and did not even return greetings when their paths crossed. Sebastien, a neighbour who spoke on condition that his full name was not used, said Lahouaiej-Bouhlel did not seem overtly religious and often dressed in shorts. Only
NICE: Five children and 21 adults were still fighting for their lives in hospital on Saturday after the Nice truck attack, the French health ministry said. In a statement the ministry said a total of 121 injured people remained in hospital while another 182 people had sought care in hospitals around the city and in nearby towns. Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel, 31, smashed a 19-tonne truck into a packed crowd on Thursday night just as a fireworks display was ending, killing 84 people, including 10 children. The children were being treated at the Lenval Foundation paediatric hospital in the French Riviera city. Lenval spokeswoman Stephanie Simpson said that “five children are still in critical condition and one child has stabilised”, adding the hospital had treated 30 children the night of the attack. Among the children is an unidentified eight-year-old boy who may be a missing Romanian national. “Three Romanian nationals, two spouses and a minor, who were in the Nice area at the time of the attack have not yet been located”, Romania’s foreign affairs ministry said. “There is one minor (at Lenval) who could be the missing child”, it added. Simpson, the hospital spokesperson, said the youngest to be treated at Lenval was six months old, with most of the children being treated for head trauma and fractures. “We are used to treating lots of children, what has been difficult to manage is the psychological aspect,” Simpson said. A team of trauma counsellors has been working at the hospital, seeing over 50 families since the attack. AGENCIES
Investigators piece together picture of Nice truck attacker one neighbour said she had had any concerns about him, describing him as “a good-looking man who kept giving my two daughters the eye”. ‘NeveR ATTeNded mOSqUe’: LahouaiejBouhlel was often seen drinking beer and never attended the small mosque near his home, other residents of his home district told AFP. “I never saw him at the mosque,” said the caretaker of an apartment building as he sat in a restaurant next to the mosque, who asked not to be named. Three bearded Muslims with him agreed — they had never seen the man at the mosque either. Molins said that although Lahouaiej-Bouhlel had never been investigated by the security services, he was known to police. “He had a police and judicial record for threats, violence, theft and acts of criminal damage between 2010 and 2016, and had been sentenced by the Nice criminal court to a six-month term, suspended, on March 24 2016 for violence with arms, committed in January 2016. “On the other hand, he was totally unknown to intelligence services, nationally and locally, and was never
flagged for signs of radicalisation,” he added. Lahouaiej-Bouhlel’s wife was brought in for questioning on Friday morning, Molins said. Neighbours said the couple had three children, including a baby, but were separated. One resident of the apartment block where the family had lived until 18 months ago before they split up said Lahouaiej-Bouhlel was a violent man who had an extreme reaction to his wife’s request for a divorce. “His wife had asked for a divorce after a violent argument,” said the man, who also asked not to be identified. “I don’t think there was a radicalisation issue, I think there was psychiatric problem,” he added. Police investigators and forensic experts entered the apartment where he moved to at around 9:30 am with an armed police intervention unit in support, and brought out bags of material later. Eighty-four people were killed, including 10 children and teenagers, and 202 were injured, 52 of them critically, Molins added. President Francois Hollande has declared the attack was of “an undeniable terrorist nature.”

NDIA on Saturday said it hoped that Pakistan will avail provisions of the bilateral Indus Waters Treaty to amicably resolve matters of mutual concern pertaining to hydro-electric projects and not violate it by rushing to a third forum. Noting that a Pakistan team led by water and power secretary visited India recently, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said the visit was in response to India pointing out that Pakistan was violating provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in rushing to a third forum without attempting to avail Treaty provisions for amicably resolving matters of mutual concern pertaining to two hydro- electric projects. The two projects are - Kishenganga (330 MW on Jhelum tributary) and Ratle (850 MW on Chenab). “During the talks, both sides stated their views at government level. We hope that the Pakistan side will see rea-
son in our suggestions on the way forward,” he added. The Indo-Pak meeting came amidst reports that Pakistan has decided to move the Court of Arbitration (CoA) against India for alleged breaches of IWT 1960 by erecting Kis-
hanganga and Ratle Hydropower Projects with objectionable designs. Pakistan’s Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif on Friday tweeted, “talks were held for two and half years with India on the resolution of Pakistan’s objections regarding
Kishinganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects. The talks failed. Pakistan with the consent of stakeholders decided to take it to full court of arbitration.” The Indian government invited Pakistani side to discuss points of dispute under the Indus Water Treaty (IWT). The secretary water and power heading an eight-member delegation held two days talks on July 14-15 in India, the minister further informed. India is developing, 330 MW Kishanganga hydroelectric project on the River Kishanganga, named as Neelum in Pakistan and 850 MW Ratle hydroelectric project on Riven Chenab in Indian occupied Kashmir. Under the IWT, Pakistan has rights over both the rivers but India can initiate run of the river projects. Pakistan’s primary objection is against the designs of both the projects that allow far greater pondage, water storage, as compared to run of the river projects. Pakistan has apprehensions that the water storage could be used for declining river flows to Pakistan.

Intervention in cotton trade opposed Stakeholders in the cotton economy have strongly objected to a government proposal to allow the state-owned Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) to intervene in the market, fearing the move would distort trade and hurt the exports of cotton and its allied products. The government wants the TCP to procure cotton from ginners at support price in the hope of benefiting growers. In a statement issued the other day, the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) said the state intervention would negate the policy of free trade in cotton being followed successfully for the last so many years. The sustainable future of all stakeholders, including growers, depended upon the continuation of non-intervention policy, the KCA said. It also reminded the government that such moves had not borne fruit in the past as well because the benefit of purchasing cotton at prices higher than the market could not be passed on to growers. The KCA suggested that if the government really wanted to protect growers’ interest, it should provide direct benefit to them by subsidising electricity, fertiliser and pesticides to reduce their cost of production. This would not only ensure direct benefit to growers without any middleman or malpractices, but also help reduce losses to the government. All Pakistan Textile Mills Association’s Chairman Tariq Saud also deplored the government’s proposal and criticised the Ministry of Textile Industry for even suggesting an indicative price for cotton on the pattern of wheat and intervening in the market through the TCP. “The ministry seems to have no clue about the dismal state of affairs of the textile industry where cotton consumption has already declined to 13 million bales from 16m bales,” he said. He said 35 per cent of the spinning capacity has totally collapsed and another 30pc is incurring losses due to high cost of doing business. NEWS DESK
Venezuelan president accuses Citibank of ‘financial blockade’ CARACAS: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused Citibank of mounting a “financial blockade” on the country after the US bank decided to close the government’s international payments account with it. Citibank confirmed the move Tuesday, saying it made the decision “following a periodic risk management review,” without explaining what that review found about its operations related to the deeply troubled Venezuelan economy. Maduro said Monday that Citibank gave no warning when it decided to close the Venezuelan central bank’s accounts with it. “That is what you call a financial blockade,” the embattled president said in televised remarks. He said the move amounted to an “inquisition” by US President Barack Obama’s administration. The Venezuelan president said his South American nation, a major oil producer suffering heavily from the crash in crude prices, uses the account to make payments to other accounts in the United States and worldwide. Danielle Romero-Apsilos, a Citi spokeswoman, said the decision came after a bank risk review. “This decision is not a reflection of our commitment to a country we have served for almost 100 years. We value our dialogue with the president’s administration and hope to address its concerns in the interest of continuing to serve our clients,” she said in a statement. Maduro’s socialist government has often claimed that US interests and local business elites were trying to undermine his state-led economy and prevent Venezuela’s access to international credit. “Do you think they are going to stop us by putting in place a financial blockade? No, ladies and gentlemen, nobody stops Venezuela! With Citibank or without it, we are moving forward. With Kimberly or without, we are moving.” Earlier Monday the government moved to let workers to assume control of the Venezuela facilities of US consumer goods giant Kimberly-Clark, two days after the company announced it would cease production because of high inflation and difficulties getting enough hard currency to buy raw materials. Labor Minister Oswaldo Vera said at the facility’s plant in the central city of Maracay the government would “authorise immediate occupation of the workplace known as Kimberly-Clark de Venezuela... by its workers.” After signing the authorization, Vera said machines would be back in operation within hours. SBP to issue commemorative coin of Rs 50 in honour of late Edhi KARACHI STAFF REPORT
State Bank of Pakistan Governor Ashraf Mahmood Wathra has said the SBP would issue a commemorative coin of Rs 50 in memory of Abdul Sattar Edhi as a small token of appreciation to remember him in the history of Pakistan. He was addressing a ‘condolence’ gathering arranged Saturday to pay tribute to late Abdul Sattar Edhi who served the needy, orphans, widows and destitute regardless of their caste, color and creed. The event was attended by senior management of the bank, Edhi’s son Faisal Edhi, representatives of the financial sector, philanthropists and notables. Paying tribute to late Edhi, the SBP governor said social welfare was no ordinary feat. He said developing countries generally faced a lack of welfare facilities and private sector in such countries filled the void. He
complemented late Edhi for being among the first ones to come forward for the cause of humanity in the country. Wathra said that “although there is no dearth of welfare organisations in this country, Edhi never sought elaborate gatherings for fund raising, rather he depended upon the common man of Pakistan for this purpose”. He went on to add that this approach was symbolic of the philosophy of ‘help yourself’ and understanding pain and anguish of each other. The governor recalled that services rendered by late Edhi had been recognised locally as well as internationally. “He felt
proud of being a member of Jinnah Society when an award was conferred upon him for his outstanding services,” Wathra said as he urged members of financial services, presidents of commercial banks and other high ranking officials present there to come forward and fully cooperate with Edhi Foundation and other social welfare organisations under corporate social responsibility. Jinnah Society President Liaquat Merchant, while recounting services of Edhi, said he was at the forefront to serve humanity in any eventuality. He added that late Edhi was legend in his lifetime and perhaps people like him
are born in 100 years time. Pakistan Banks Association Chairman Aftab Manzoor called late Edhi as the “greatest humanitarian” and “beacon of hope” in face of every distress and calamity. He prayed to Allah Almighty to grant him the highest place in Jannah. Speaking at the condolence gathering, son of late Edhi, Faisal Edhi said although his father had gone but his memories and mission was with them. He said the love extended by people from everywhere had no example and prayed that this love and prayers remain with them for the successful achievement of the mission of Edhi Sahib. Faisal Edhi recalled that recently Sikhs, Christians, Hindus as well as Muslims belonging to various sects were present at the residence/office of late Edhi and all of them prayed together for his absolution and success of his mission. “After seeing them I am sure that Edhi Sb’s mission cannot be stopped,” he added.

AttemPted turkey CouP mAy imPeril region’s Crude trAnsPort Turkish military sets up a road block in Istanbul.

HE attempted military coup in Turkey may boost oil prices by imperiling crude shipments through the country, a major energy-trade corridor. For now, shipping lanes are clear. The Turkish straits are open and shipping traffic hasn’t been disrupted, an official at the Istanbul-based shipping center said by phone Saturday. “Any uncertainty in that region almost invariably results in an increase in
oil prices, particularly given the interaction between what goes on in Turkey with Syria,” Craig Pirrong, director of the Global Energy Management Institute at the University of Houston’s Bauer College of Business, said in a phone interview. Analysts will be looking to see whether there’s a “spillover to the major oil producers,” he said. At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Turkey is a vital conduit of crude transport from Russia and Iraq to the Mediter-
ranean Sea. Millions of barrels of oil travel through the nation’s waterways and pipelines each day. The nation is also on the fringe of broader conflict in the Middle East. Syria borders Turkey’s southeastern edge. Turkey’s leaders said they have quelled the attempted coup after hours of clashes that saw tanks blockading roads, soldiers fighting police and warplanes bombing the parliament in Ankara. More than 1,500 military personnel were arrested, the presidency said. Oil Gains Crude oil futures rose above $46 a barrel in after-market trading in New York following the unrest, extending gains from a force majeure declared by
Exxon Mobil Corp. on crude shipments from Nigeria. David Goldwyn, a former State Department special envoy and coordinator for international energy affairs in the Obama administration, said it was too early to assess the impact on energy transportation from the unrest in Turkey. The Turkish Straits, including the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, are one of the world’s major chokepoints for seaborne crude transit, with about 2.9 million barrels of oil passing through in 2013, the latest year of available data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Turkey is also home to pipelines that transport crude and condensate from na-
tions including Iraq and Azerbaijan to Ceyhan, on the Mediterranean in southern Turkey. Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan, a pipeline operated by BP, exported 67 million barrels of crude, or about 740,000 a day, from the port in the first quarter, according to the British company. The flow to Ceyhan hasn’t been disrupted, according to a Turkish Energy Ministry official who asked not to be identified in line with government policy. At least 10 crude tankers were signaling Turkish ports at the time of the attempted coup, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. They included six Suezmax and two Aframax ships bound for Ceyhan and two Aframax ships destined for the Turkish Straits. AGENCIES
Agriculture mechanisation plan to be launched in Punjab SIALKOT: The Punjab government has mapped out a plan for the promotion of agriculture mechanisation to enhance production and to track agriculture sector on modern line in the province. Sources in the Agriculture Department said that under the plan, the Punjab government would provide agriculture implements on 50 per cent subsidy to the growers. The promotion of agriculture mechanisation programme would be implemented in all districts of the province, they said. The Agriculture Department had finalised necessary arrangements for the implementation of the programme in a transparent manner in the province. Under the programme, home-made set of agriculture machines and implements like disc harrow, rotavator, seed drill, chisel plough, sugarcane ridger will be provided to farmers on 50 per cent subsidy for one set of implements to a farmer. dollar firms vs euro on solid us economic data NEW YORK: The dollar strengthened against the euro Friday after solid US economic data supported the Federal Reserve’s plan to raise interest rates, rebounding from a week in retreat. Retail sales in June jumped 0.6 per cent, much better than expected, signaling stronger growth in consumer spending that drives about two-thirds of the US economy. Inflation held steady last month but a key core measure pointed to a slow pickup in price gains. “Big day for US data, stronger than expected for the most part, especially in retail sales,” said Vassili Serebriakov of Credit Agricole. The dollar rose 0.7 per cent to $1.1041 per euro. “The odds of a rate hike before the end of the year have been moving higher, so that’s helping the dollar,” Serebriakov said. The Federal Reserve has not raised interest rates since December, but has been actively weighing doing so all year. The pound, battered since Britain voted to leave the European Union three weeks ago, had resumed its slump against the dollar after a sharp rally Thursday following the Bank of England’s unexpected decision to not cut rates following the Brexit vote. The pound sank nearly one percent to $1.3174 on Friday. “Sterling’s best week in seven years may not be sustainable with expectations high for the BoE to chop rates to new lows as soon as its next meeting on August 4,” said Joe Manimbo of Western Union Business Solutions. European shares slip; safe-havens gain on attempted Turkish coup NEW YORK AGENCIES
European shares edged lower on Friday after at least 84 people died in an attack in France and U.S. stocks dipped from record peaks, while benchmark U.S. Treasury yields eased off three-week highs after the close of U.S. stock markets as Turkey’s military said it had seized power. Shares of European travel and leisure companies fell, weighing on the region’s stock markets, after the attack in the city of Nice, which also injured scores of people. The benchmark S&P 500 and Dow Jones industrial average stock indexes edged up to fresh record intraday highs on stronger-than-expected June retail sales data before trading mostly flat, with financials weighing after disappointing results from big banks. Safe-haven U.S. Treasuries, gold, and the Japanese yen got a bid after Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said a group within Turkey’s military had attempted to overthrow the government and security forces had been called in to “do what is necessary.”Benchmark U.S.

The dollar was last down 0.47 percent against the yen at 104.83 yen after hitting a three-week high of 106.30. Oil prices extended gains in post-settlement trading, and spot gold prices got a boost after Turkey’s armed forces said they had taken power in the country to protect the democratic order and to maintain human rights. “The instability in the region probably puts a bit more focus on the
U.S. as a safe-haven environment,” said Bucky Hellwig, senior vice president at BB&T Wealth Management in Birmingham, Alabama, on the attempted uprising in Turkey. The S&P hit 2,169.05, topping Thursday’s record intraday peak and marking its fifth straight record intraday high, and the Dow hit 18,557.43, its fourth consecutive record peak. The S&P 500 hit record closing highs for four straight days earlier this week, while the Dow hit record closing peaks for three straight days. Data showing China’s economy

Aziz Ansari gets Emmy nomination for a lead role

NOWN for posting risque videos and selfies on Facebook and Instagram, the Pakistani model was easily the most talked about and controversial star of her time. Never seen without her make-up, the 25-year-old gained popularity in recent months for her controversial selfies and subsequent televised spats with a noted Pakistani cleric and her widely trolled ‘twerk’ video, Ban, among other things. As mystery shrouds the social media sensation’s death and her personal life, here’s a look at why Qandeel was the queen of controversy and some of her shocking moments. 1. In June, Qandeel uploaded selfies on her Facebook and Twitter accounts with cleric Mufti Abdul Qavi, which went viral. The Facebook celebrity and Mufti Qavi made an unlikely pair, but that’s not the only reason why their selfies stirred up a storm. The photos made headlines when their ‘controversial’ nature led to Mufti Qavi’s suspension from the religious Ruet-e-Hilal Committee as well as the National Ulema Mushaikh Council. The Facebook star
claimed the Mufti had contacted her numerous times and she met him on his request. 2. In March, Qandeel announced her intention to perform a strip dance for Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi if he succeeded in leading his team to victory in a World T20 match against India. The video appeared to be the tipping point for Facebook users in Pakistan. Many seemed to have reported her page for nudity, resulting in a temporary block on her page. 3. In April, 2016, she shifted her attention from Afridi to Indian cricketer Virat Kohli. She made a steamy video where she bluntly asked Virat to leave his rumoured girlfriend,
Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma, and be with her instead. Expressing her love for Virat, she called him “very charming”. “Virat Kohli is so charming, he is so handsome. During the India versus Pakistan match in Kolkata, the way he played I went crazy. Seriously, he should leave Anushka and think about me (in a very seductive tone). I would love to be with him. Virat I love you baby. Please, please, please, please leave Anushka. Leave her,” Baloch said in her video. 4. It’s safe to say Qandeel was the second social media sensation from Pakistan (after Taher Shah) to be trolled outside the country. You might have missed it, but Qandeel was all over
Salman Khan breaks silence on ‘raped woman’ comment
ENTERTAINMENT DESK Known for his work in the Netflix series Master of None, Comedian Aziz Ansari has become the first South Asian actor to receive an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. While there have been a few actors of South Asian descent to be nominated for Emmys (Naveen Andrews for Lost and Ben Kingsly for a number of miniseries like Mrs Harris and Joseph), Ansari is the first to be nominated for a lead role. Prior to this Emmy nomination, Ansari earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, also for his part on Master of None. Ansari plays the role of Dev Shah, an actor trying to make his way around New York. The show has been appreciated for breaking down stereotypes surrounding Asian men and also for the diversity present in the series, which has earned it the right to be called progressive compared to many other shows.
Salman Khan, who is currently enjoying the success of his film Sultan but also embroiled in controversy over his “raped woman” remark, said something he says is liable to be taken to mean something else. At a press conference held at his Panvel farmhouse yesterday, the superstar was asked about the controversies that keep surrounding him. “Should I give you something to survive for the next two weeks? If I don’t say anything, I am boring. See I understand your responsibility towards your job. But, if I say something, my people won’t like it,” Salman told the reporters. “So you guys tell me what you want me to do. If people are taking advantage of his silence,
you reply, you don’t reply. People will still write what they want to. I may say something; it will be taken as something else. Phir Ek Statement Ko Ghuma Phira Ke Kya Hota Hai you also know. It’s sad,” he added. When asked if he feels controversies cannot touch him as his fans will still continue to support him, Salman said, “No, I don’t think like that. To me, it’s the performance of the last film that mat-
ters. That does the work. The whole cycle begins from there again. Once that chapter ends, another one begins.” Salman courted controversy after he said during a media interaction that he felt like a “raped woman” walking out of a ring in his role as a wrestler in his upcoming film Sultan. He later said, “I don’t think I should have” and explained that he found it hard to walk. AGENCIES
BEN AFFLECK, JENNIFER GARNER NOT PARTING WAYS ENTERTAINMENT DESK Fans were heartbroken when lovebirds Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck had announced plans for divorce last year, but reportedly, ‘things have changed’ over the course of time. According to US Weekly, the couple married for 10 years may not have moved on after their divorce, and the divorce proceedings have been put on hold as of now. Sources close to the couple revealed that neither Jen nor Ben have filed for divorce. “Jen mentioned that the divorce was going through very soon, and then a few weeks ago, things changed,” says a source close to Garner. “It does not seem to be moving in that direction.”
By the looks of it, the two still have feelings for each other. “Jen seems to still be in love with Ben but doesn’t allow her mind to go there,” added the
source. “She just focuses on the kids.” “If it was up to Ben they would be together. He feels like he can’t live without Jen,” said a second insider, However, another Affleck source claims that the details of their divorce are being laid out privately by lawyers. “They were never in a rush to file. This was always the plan.” Although the two live in the same five-bedroom mansion, the source disclosed that Ben sleeps in the guest room while Jen sleeps with the eldest daughter. “They want their kids’ lives to go on as uninterrupted as possible,” revealed the source. This looks like good news for the fans! Let’s all hope that they work things out fast!

the internet and trending on Twitter for her controversial video, Ban. Qandeel Baloch and young singer Aryan Khan dropped a music video in early July, and it was everything people in Pakistan hoped it wouldn’t be. Featuring twerking (well, almost), a slashed bodysuit and lots of lace, the music video was classic Qandeel: very OTT (over The Top, if you will). 5. Recently, the internet sensation accepted that she had been married previously and had a child from that marriage. Speaking to media, a man called Ashiq Hussain claimed early in July that he married Qandeel in 2008 and that the couple had a son who now lives with him. He also said that Qandeel’s real name
was Fowzia Azeem. Ashiq says the marriage ended in 2009 and that, contrary to Qandeel’s claims, he never physically abused her. 6. Qandeel has also been in the news for her ‘love’ for Pakistan Tehreeke-Insaf chief and Oxfordlearned former cricket captain, Imran Khan. She had showed up at his house in Lahore’s Zaman Park after his rally in May and was quoted by media to be heartbroken after Khan did not meet her. After Khan’s third marriage rumours surfaced recently, Baloch didn’t agree that it was the right move for PTI leader and even said that he must have chosen her as his life partner. 7. When Qandeel was not being hailed as Pakistan’s Poonam Pandey, or making headlines for wanting to strip dance for the Pakistan cricket team during the World Cup in March, or exposing a mufti or engaged in a war of words with her former husband or openly expressing her love for Imran Khan, she talked about Amitabh Bachchan. In a recent interview, she said, “India mein main ek hi bande ki fan hoon — Mr Amitabh Bachchan. Virat Kohli is charming and handsome, but I would strip only for Mr Bachchan.”

There is also a gorgeous photo of the actress on Facebook. Over 3.5 million have already liked her Facebook page. The actress reportedly threw a bash on Friday evening to celebrate her birthday. According to DNA, Katrina’s friends including Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Karan Johar, Ayan Mukerji, Sultan director Ali Abbas Zafar, Kabir Khan and his wife Mini Mathur, Sidharth Malhotra and her manager Reshma Shetty were partying with her. HE UN’s cultural agency on Friday added four new sites in Iran, India, China and Micronesia to its World Heritage list. The sites named by UNESCO include the so-called qanat water systems in Iran, the Zuojiang Huashan rock art cultural landscape in China and the archaeological site of Nalanda Mahavihara in India. The landscape in China is all that remains today of the bronze age culture — known as “bronze drum” after its most characteristic artefacts— once prevalent across the country s south, the agency said in a statement. The site in Iran is an example of an ancient water-supply system — known as qanat — suited for the most arid areas. The fourth site is Nan Madol — a
ceremonial centre of eastern Micronesia in the Federated States of Micronesia containing mediaeval palaces and tombs. The Micronesian site is a series of 99 artificial islets built with walls of basalt and coral boulders.
It was, however, immediately placed on UNESCO’s list of heritagein-danger. The UN agency warned threats to the site were notably the construction of navigation channels which was leading to the uncontrolled growth of
the mangrove, making the historic edifices more fragile. The heritage-in-danger list is intended to highlight the risks facing world heritage sites that need protection and allows the committee to allocate immediate support from the World Heritage Fund. UNESCO named the old towns of Djenne in Mali and Shakhrisyabz in Uzbekistan on Wednesday on its heritage-in-danger list during its 40th meeting of its World Heritage Committee in Istanbul. All five of Libya s World Heritage sites were named on Thursday by the agency as at risk of damage from the civil war that continues to rage in the country. Meanwhile, the complex of churches and holy sites in the Georgian town of Mtskheta was removed from the in-danger list, where it had been listed since 2009. The meeting will end on July 20.

Mexican taxi driver seeks to ride Pokemon Go craze A Mexican taxi driver has jumped on the Pokemon GO craze sweeping the world by driving smartphone-armed customers around in search of the augmented reality game’s target creatures. The mobile phone game has become an instant hit with more users in the United States than Twitter a week after launch. Players are spending longer on the application than they do with some of the most popular social platforms such as Instagram or WhatsApp. The Nintendo Co game is not yet available in Mexico, but some users have worked out how to access the game. To play the augmented reality mobile phone game players must physically walk or drive around in the real world to capture Pokemon creatures. Emilio Cacho, a 29-year-old cab driver from the city of Minatitlan in the eastern state of Veracruz, said he began offering services as a “Pokemon hunter” on Monday and has received more than 20 calls since the start of the week. “I didn’t know about the game, but I heard a lot of talk about people going out to look for Pokemons, so I thought it was a good way to make money, now that the economic situation in Veracruz is so difficult,” he said by telephone. Perched atop a cherry picker truck several stories high, Brazilian graffiti artist Eduardo Kobra sprays puffs of paint on a sprawling mural in the colours of the Olympic rings. With three weeks to go to the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Kobra and his assistants are racing to put the finishing touches on the 3,000-square-meter (32,000square-foot) painting that graces a wall in the city’s newly overhauled port district. The mural depicts five indigenous faces representing the continents of the world, awash in the blue, yellow, black, green and red of the Olympics. Thailand’s Karen people represent Asia, the Huli of Papua New Guinea represent Oceania, the Tapajos of the Brazilian Amazon represent the Americas, the Chukchi of Siberia represent Europe and the Mursi of Ethiopia represent Africa. “There is growing intolerance in the world,” said Kobra, 40, of the motivation behind the work. “Look at Europe, where people are rejecting refugees, rejecting what is different. I hope this
mural, in the Olympic spirit, will help remind us that we are all different but all one: the human race.” Kobra and his team spent 15 days preparing the former shipyard wall by plugging its holes and painting it white. For the past week, they have been working 11 hours a day to cover the wall — about half the size of a football pitch — in spray paint, acrylic and varnish. They have already used 2,000 bottles of spray paint, 200 litres (50 gallons) of acrylic and 100 cans of varnish, says Kobra, who grew up tagging walls in a hard-
scrabble neighbourhood of Sao Paulo called Campo Lindo. From the age of 12 years old, “the street was my way to socialise, have fun and also protest against social exclusion,” he said. Today, he does graffiti “only with permission,” he said. His current work, called “We Are All One,” is sponsored by the Rio 2016 organizing committee and city hall. His goal is to finish it several days before the August 5 opening ceremony — in time for the thousands of tourists and athletes expected to descend on the city’s iconic waterfront.
Is invisibility cloak on its way to reality? WASHINGTON Agencies
Invisibility cloak has hidden Harry Potter and hobbits from view and now, this sci-fi staple may be moving closer to reality! Scientists at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) have made an object disappear by using a composite material with nano-size particles that can enhance specific properties on the object’s surface. Researchers demonstrated for the first time a practical cloaking device that allows curved surfaces to appear flat to electromagnetic waves. While the research might not lead to the invisibility cloak made famous in J.K Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ novels quite yet, this practical demonstration could result in a step-change in how antennas are tethered to their platform. It could allow for antennas in different shapes and sizes to be attached in awkward places and a wide variety of materials. Co-author Yang Hao said: “The design is based upon transformation optics, a concept behind the idea of the invisibility cloak. Previous research has shown this technique working at one frequency. However, we can demonstrate that it works at a greater range of frequencies making it more useful for other engineering applications, such as nano-antennas and the aerospace industry.” The researchers coated a curved surface with a nanocomposite medium, which has seven distinct layers (called graded index nanocomposite) where the electric property of each layer varies depending on the position. The effect is to ‘cloak’ the object: such a structure can hide an object that would ordinarily have caused the wave to be scattered. The underlying design approach has much wider applications, ranging from microwave to optics for the control of any kind of electromagnetic surface waves. First author Luigi La Spada said: “The study and manipulation of surface waves is the key to develop technological and industrial solutions in the design of real-life platforms, for different application fields. Spada added, “We demonstrated a practical possibility to use nanocomposites to control surface wave propagation through advanced additive manufacturing. Perhaps most importantly, the approach used can be applied to other physical phenomena that are described by wave equations, such as acoustics. For this reason, we believe that this work has a great industrial impact.”
Fiction authors imagine DonalD trump’s presiDency NEW YORK Agencies
Imagine its 2017 and Donald Trump is president. He’s been informed by national security adviser Sean Hannity that Russia has launched a nuclear missile to Canada and war may be unavoidable. Only a fellow celebrity can make it right — at least if you ask Richard Hine, author of the novella “Kim Kardashian Saves the World (After President Trump Nearly Ends It)”. “I’ve taken the idea of how ridiculous it would be to put a reality TV star in the realm of the presidency, and how you need a bigger TV reality star to step in,” explains Hine, whose book is among a wave of fiction about the presumptive Republican nominee.
If Trump’s political rise is proof that reality can outwit the most inventive minds, then some are trying to win back the narrative by jumping into the future. Thanks to the speed of digital technology, several authors have managed to complete and release Trump fiction in time for next week’s GOP convention, with titles including “Operation Golden Mane: The Donald Trump Incident,” ‘‘Donald Trump Builds a Wall: A Funny Story” and “Trumpocalypse Now: A Horror Satire”. Last month, The New York Times published a short story by acclaimed fiction writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, whose “The Arrangements” views the campaign from the perspective of Trump’s wife, Melania. “She sagged suddenly with terror, imagining what would hap-
pen if Donald actually won,” Adichie writes. “Everything would change. Her contentment would crack into pieces. The relentless intrusions into their lives; those horrible media people who never gave Donald any credit would get even worse.” Andrew Shaffer is another Trump fiction author, a pro at parodies from “Fifty Shames of Earl Grey” or “How to Survive a Sharknado and Other Unnatural Disasters”. Shaffer’s “The Day of the Donald” is set in 2018, with a wall along the Mexican border under construction and a wouldbe Trump biographer mysteriously dead. Shaffer bills his story “A completely untrue, utterly unauthorised but not thoroughly impossible thriller”. “Here’s a guy who’s a readymade Bond villain — he’s rich,
he’s eccentric, he’s always got a beautiful woman on his arm (whether it’s his wife or daughter),” Shaffer says. “Plus, look at that hair. You can just imagine him walking into a room where James Bond is tied up and then cackling maniacally.” The books aim for laughs, but
the authors say they want to address serious issues. Hine supposes in his novel that a Trump victory was made possible by voting restrictions that kept students, minorities and other presumed Democratic voters from the polls. He also critiques how candidates use the media.
“It’s so easy to make fun of Trump’s bombastic, arrogant and narcissistic style, pointing out the flaws in his statements and factfree approach to his tweets,” says Hine, whose Twitter parody @RealDonalDrumpf has more than 40,000 followers. “So I wanted to write something that comes out of a slightly different angle. I wanted to say something about celebrities and social media and how Trump has used social media and traditional media.” Paul Bellow, the pseudonymous author of “Trump Drumpf: A Political Satire Novel”, said his book arose from conversations with friends about the election. The story takes us to 2023, when the country is being run by President Trump and vice-president Facebook and Detroit is in the arms of China.

AKISTAN leg-spinner Yasir Shah on Saturday registered his name in the record books after he broke Australia’s Charlie Turner’s 123-yearold record for most wickets after 13 Test matches. Yasir’s sixth wicket in his splendid six-wicket inning haul on the third day of the first Test against England at Lord’s bagged him his 82nd Test wicket, one more than the Australian seamer. He became the first leg-spinner to achieve the feat in 83 years. It is worth mentioning that Yasir has another innings to widen the one wicket gap. The leggie is on the way to reach 100 Test wickets mark in shortest time, a feat that was achieved 120 years ago by English great Geroge Lohmann. Yasir, who made his Test debut in October 2014 against Australia, has 5 innings to pick 18 scalps which will earn him the accolade of breaking the record. In his 13 Test

Red-ball transition our biggest challenge: Khawaja
SportS DeSk Australia batsman Usman Khawaja has said transitioning to red-ball cricket after a long break from Tests will be his side’s biggest challenge in their upcoming
series against Sri Lanka. Australia last played a Test in February this year, against New Zealand. “We haven’t played red-ball cricket for a while,” Khawaja said. “Weird seeing the red ball coming down the first time when it did [in an intra-squad practice game]. We were out in the field all day yesterday and you forget how tough being out on the field is. Going to have to do five days of it. Test matches is the hardest form, I reckon, mentally and physically. Going five days, especially in heat like this If it goes that far, it’s going to be pretty tough. It gets easier the more you do it. “In a way it’s nice we have got three formats of the game. It can be a lot sometimes but I really enjoyed playing white-ball cricket. Now enjoying coming back for some Test stuff, doing something different.” Since the Tests against New Zealand, Australia have played T20s in South Africa, the World T20 and the ODI tri-series in the West Indies. Khawaja, who announced yesterday that he had got engaged following the tri-series, suggested Sri Lanka’s heat could also be an obstacle once the Tests start. “The weather is a big challenge. Very hot and humid. The conditions are different, similar to what you get in West Indies and India. Not too foreign, but one of those places where if you start scoring some runs, you’ll get comfortable. If the wicket deteriorates, though, it could get tough to score too.” Australia’s squad of 15 is playing intra-squad warm-up games in Colombo, leading up to the first Test in Pallekele from July 26. That will be followed by Tests in Galle and Colombo, before the limited-overs leg featuring five ODIs and two T20s.
The world’s top doubles pair of Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert put France 2-1 ahead of the Czech Republic in their Davis Cup World Group quarter-final on Saturday. Wimbledon champions Mahut and Herbert, ranked first and second in the world, beat Radek Stepanek and Lukas Rosol 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in just over three hours Mahut and Herbert took only 25 minutes to cruise through the opening set on the hardcourt of the Werk Arena in the eastern Czech steel hub of Trinec. The Czechs recovered in the second set, making fewer mistakes and taking a 3-0 lead which they converted into a 6-3 win. The French pair regained their dominance again in set three, winning 6-3, but the Czechs, led by 37-year-old veteran Stepanek, fought back in the fourth with two breaks to one. Finally, Rosol lost his serve to love in the first game of the last set and that was all the French needed to take the set 6-4. “I think we played a fantastic game against the world’s best pair, we gave it everything,” said Stepanek. “One set doesn’t mean anything in these long rubbers, we managed to come back and fought until the end.” On Friday, the Czechs took a lead as world number 78 Rosol stunned 10th-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (10/8), 6-4. Lucas Pouille, ranked 21st, then swept 50thranked Jiri Vesely 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 7-5 to put France level in his Davis Cup debut. In Sunday’s reverse singles, Vesely is due to face Tsonga before Rosol takes on Pouille. The Czech Republic won the Davis Cup in 2012 and 2013, while France last lifted the trophy in 2001.
GLOUCESTERSHIRE SEAMERS DISMANTLE ESSEX SportS DeSk Gloucestershire’s seamers bowled them to a 61-run County Championship win over Division Two leaders Essex at Cheltenham. Starting out on 16 for 1, requiring a further 197 for victory, the visitors crashed to 152 all out by early afternoon, with Liam Norwell, David Payne and Craig Miles all profiting from the overcast conditions. Norwell claimed four wickets in the innings, while Payne and Miles took three each, maintaining an exemplary line and length to put constant pressure on the batsmen. The result catapulted Gloucestershire into the promotion race as they took 21 points to the six earned by Essex. They now trail the leaders by only 11 points, with a game in hand. Norwell removed nightwatchman Jamie Porter with the first ball of the day, Gareth Roderick holding a thin edge at the second attempt, and followed up by having Tom Westley caught at first slip for 17 before left-armer Payne pinned Nick Browne lbw, pushing forward. Miles then claimed a split-innings hat-trick when bowling Ravi Bopara for 3, shouldering arms, with his first ball of the day, having also struck with his final two deliveries of the first innings.
He followed up by dismissing Dan Lawrence, who drove a catch to extra cover and Ryan ten Doeschate, caught behind, in a six-over spell of 3 for 26. “My dad had mentioned to me that I was on a hat-trick after the first innings and Hamish Marshall reminded me before I ran in to bowl my first ball today,” Miles said. “I gave it everything and it was a great feeling, whether it was spread over a few overs or not. I’ve never taken a hat-trick in any form of cricket. “The ball I took the last wicket with is the one I get to keep and have mounted. But it was a real team effort by the bowlers. Liam Norwell and David Payne probably deserve a ball each too.” Essex did their best to be positive, but the quality of the bowling, with the ball swinging and seaming off the pitch, allowed Gloucestershire to dominate the morning session. James Foster pulled Norwell for a defiant six in the final over before lunch, but then edged a wide delivery through to wicketkeeper Roderick and departed for 7. That left Essex 124 for 8 at lunch, still requiring 89 runs, with spots of rain in the air. The afternoon session saw only one run added before Graham Napier edged a defensive shot off Payne to give Roderick his fourth catch.
Ashar Zaidi smacked Norwell for a six over wide long-on, but the following ball saw the left-hander, on 37, get an inside edge onto his stumps and it was all over at just before 2.15pm.

That gave Norwell 4 for 65 from 16.3 overs, while Payne finished with 3 for 40 and Miles on his lunch figures of 3 for 26. It was a high class bowling effort on a day Essex began as favourites.

Woakes stars but Pakistan stretch ahead LonDon

F there were any doubts about how well prepared Pakistan were to challenge England in this series, they should have now been dispelled. The progress made by Alastair Cook’s side has hinged on their ability to seize key moments in a Test but at Lord’s they have come up against experienced and skilful opposition who refused to buckle when the pressure mounted. A second five-wicket haul from Chris Woakes giving him ten in the match for the first time in Tests provided the spearhead for England’s efforts to wrest back control after Pakistan had secured a valuable first-innings lead on a pitch that was beginning to exhibit signs of variable bounce. Punchy 40s from Asad Shafiq and Sarfraz Ahmed kept England at arm’s length, however, and they were facing a target approaching 300 and prolonged fourth-innings examination at the hands of Yasir Shah in order to win the first Test. Sarfraz was dropped on 36 by Jonny Bairstow, another unwanted entry on his wicketkeeping ledger, and his seventhwicket partnership with Yasir, promoted up the order after taking 6 for 72 in England’s innings, took the score on by another 40 valuable runs. Woakes then chipped out Sarfraz and Wahab Riaz in his third demanding spell as stumps approached to leave the contest finely poised. England have won only one of their last five Tests at Lord’s and, with the sun beating down on basking MCC members, they had to fight tooth and nail to prevent another match drifting away from them. None of the five completed first-class
matches on the ground this season had produced a result - no team had even managed 20 wickets - but that sequence is set to end. When Pakistan were 60 for 4 during the afternoon England had visions of inducing a complete collapse but a strange, staccato innings from Younis Khan nevertheless managed to hold things together. Frequently jumping into position, playing the ball with one or both legs in the air and appearing about as comfortable as a man trying to fight his way through a hedge, he survived two lbw reviews on DRS and battled his way to 25 from 95 balls before being the fifth man out, chopping Moeen Ali on to his stumps during the evening session. His 69-run partnership with Shafiq prevented Pakistan from being ambushed after they had lost 3 for 16, including captain Misbah-ul-Haq for a two-ball duck. Shafiq was by far the more fluent, although he needed some luck early on, seeing a delivery from Moeen miss everything after spinning inside a drive and then edging Jake Ball wide of a motionless James Vince at third slip. His next delivery was crunched more authoritatively through point for four more and he mixed attack and defence well until Woakes speared a delivery between bat and pad to hit the off bail. Woakes was curiously held back by Cook, despite taking six wickets in the first innings, but he made his first breakthrough after lunch with a well-executed plan to have Shan Masood taken at slip. Having bowled a series of deliveries coming back into the left-hander, then drawing him into the drive with one pitched up, Woakes shortened his length and pushed the ball across to take the outside edge. With Azhar Ali and Younis be-

calmed, Woakes struck again. For the second time in match, Azhar left the field shaking his head after a failed with a review against a tight lbw decision, HawkEye siding with umpire Joel Wilson’s decision that the ball would have gone on to clip leg stump. Cook had brought Moeen into the attack without delay, perhaps as a show of faith in his spinner, and he even burned a review for a bat-pad catch against Azhar two balls before lunch. Moeen returned in the afternoon and he gained a measure of revenge for his first-innings chasing by Misbah when Pakistan’s captain attempted to impose himself again and sent his second ball high towards deep midwicket, where Alex Hales took a good running catch. Pakistan’s top order had been corralled into a corner, with England taking three wickets at a cost of 20 runs in 15 overs after lunch. They used their second review shortly after against Younis, who had succeeded in getting a bit of bat on a
delivery from Ball to save him from being lbw; and it was then nearly 75 for 5, when Wilson eventually raised his finger to Younis, who jumped across to be hit in front of leg stump in Steven Finn’s third over. DRS overturned the umpire’s decision this time, with the ball shown to be going ever-so-slightly high and wide. The morning had been unquestionably Pakistan’s, after they gained a 67-run lead on first innings and then increased that beyond three figures for the loss of Mohammad Hafeez - whose ill-judged slash at Stuart Broad resulted in a sharp catch to second slip - in 17 overs against the new ball. England would have hoped to get closer to Pakistan’s first-innings total but Yasir took his tally to six wickets and Woakes was left stranded as the last three wickets fell 12 runs inside four overs. Misbah began with a combination of Wahab’s pace and Yasir’s wiles and the pair saw off England’s innings within 40 minutes of the first session. Broad struck
one boundary off Wahab but was then worked over by a succession of short balls, before a brace of yorkers ended his stay. The first flew through past leg stump but Broad did not heed the warning and hung back again to be bowled off his boot next ball. Finn has been known to block up an end and Woakes was happy to let him have the strike but he fell to Yasir, trapped in front of leg stump by a ball that skidded on. That gave Yasir the first six-for by a Pakistan spinner in England since Mushtaq Ahmed at The Oval in 1996. It was also the 82nd wicket of his short Test career - the most by any player after 13 matches. Ball sliced a four off Yasir for his first Test runs but he was run out from the first ball of the next over, with Woakes pushing for two to retain the strike. Wahab completed the dismissal at the bowler’s end and Pakistan were congratulating themselves on a job well done before the third umpire confirmed Ball’s fate.
Argentina will not miss Messi at major events: Hernan Crespo
SportS DeSk Argentina will fight for major honours despite Lionel Messi retiring from international football after the disappointment of last month’s Copa America final shootout loss to Chile, the country’s former forward Hernan Crespo has said. The 29-year-old Messi, a fivetimes World Player of the Year, is
Argentina’s top scorer with 55 goals and although he has played in three Copa America finals in 2007, 2015 and 2016, plus the 2014 World Cup final, Argentina have lost them all. Despite media reports suggesting the Barcelona forward is reconsidering his decision, Crespo, 41, said the focus should now be on ensuring Argentina remain a force and take the next step to end the coun-
try’s 23-year wait for a major trophy. “The Argentina national team is very competitive. If you watch the last three tournaments - two Copa America finals and one World Cup final - you are competitive, you arrive in the final of great events,” he told reporters on Saturday. “I hope to see our national team win but I don’t want to say that Messi was at fault, it’s not good. Messi played very well. He is the top scorer of the national team. He is the best player in the world. It’s unlucky. “But it’s not about Messi. It’s about the last 23 years the national team never won (a major trophy). Yes they won the Olympic games (in 2004 and 2008) but, at the same time, we have lost a lot of finals. However, we are still competitive. “This is just the way. I think maybe next time we will win.” With European clubs poaching players
from South America at a relatively young age, Crespo, who played for clubs across the continent, including Chelsea and AC Milan, urged aspiring youngsters to stay levelheaded when they are in the spotlight. “The world is changing now ... Now it’s worse because in six months when you start, somebody (tries to) buy you, and in Argentina you need this kind of money to maintain (hold onto) that level of player,” added Argentina’s thirdhighest goalscorer, who plays in India’s Premier Futsal league. “Maybe they are not mature enough to come to Europe but you never know which is the right way. You need to fill your passion. You need to follow that. It’s not about sacrifice, your passion is enough to play football. I changed not only the country but the continent when I was 21.”
Cristiano Ronaldo in pole position to win Ballon d’Or SportS DeSk
Classy Cavendish claims another stage win SportS DeSk Mark Cavendish’s superb form in the 2016 Tour de France continued as he claimed yet another stage victory in a bunch sprint on Saturday. Saturday’s 208.5km trek from Montelimar to the Parc des Oiseaux at Villars-les-Dombes provided little entertainment up until the final kilometres, as the main contenders for general classification glory made relatively stress-free progress within the peloton. A four-man breakaway was
gradually swallowed up before the sprint specialists took centre stage and it was Dimension Data rider Cavendish who again proved the class of the field, the Briton claiming his fourth stage win of this year’s Tour and 30th overall. Etixx Quick Step’s Marcel Kittel was left unimpressed at the finish, the German apparently believing he had been blocked off by Cavendish in the surge to the finish line. Kittel waved his right arm in frustration as he crossed the line in fifth, behind
Cavendish, Alexander Kristoff (Katusha), Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) and John Degenkolb (Giant-Alpecin). “I was way past him, so I don’t think there’s anything wrong,” said Cavendish, whose success on stage 14 was swiftly confirmed. Team Sky’s Chris Froome maintained his overall lead of one minute and 47 seconds over Bauke Mollema (TrekSegafredo) as the GC standings remained unchanged. A stage featuring three categoryfour climbs was largely devoid of incident, Jeremy Roy (FDJ), Martin Elmiger (IAM), Cesare Benedetti (Bora-Argon) and Alex Howes (Cannondale-Drapac) the four men to lead for much of the journey. Howes and Beneditti found themselves reeled in
by the peloton first before their fellow breakaway riders were also caught inside the final four kilometres. Cavendish then triumphed in the dash to the line, although Sagan continues to hold a comfortable lead in the green jersey standings.

Barcelona attacker Neymar believes Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is sitting in pole position to win the FIFA Ballon d’Or following his successful 2016. Ronaldo guided Madrid to Champions League glory at the expense of Atletico Madrid in 2015-16, before winning Euro 2016 with Portugal following a 1-0 win after extra time against host France. He had to settle for second place behind Lionel Messiin the race for the Ballon d’Or last year, but Neymar believes the 31-year-old is the favorite to lift the prestigious individual trophy this time around. “Winning titles plays a big role in the race for the Ballon d’Or,” said Neymar. “Ronaldo won the Champions League and now Euro 2016 as well. So I reckon he is in a good position. Plus Ronaldo is a great player. I have no qualms in saying that.” Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, 2013 and 2014, with Messi lifting the trophy in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015.
