Dr Allama Tahirul Qadri’s plan to take on the government in the coming days is already creating ripples in the political circles across the country as to what the cleric is up to this time after a break of about a year from national politics. The Pakistan Awami Tehreek is all set to flex its muscles once again, organising protests in different cities against what it calls the “poor governance of the Sharifs”. page 05
Things will not be much different for the PML-N government after the exit of incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and change of guard at the GHQ, contrary to popular perception in the country. PML-N circles believe that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and top government functionaries would open up once they see the back of Justice Chaudhry. page 06
The federal cabinet is likely to be expanded in the next few days as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his kitchen cabinet are mulling a reshuffle in ministerial portfolios, Pakistan Today has learnt. Government sources said that a meeting of the prime minister and his close aides was expected in the next couple of days in which the top party leadership would discuss the matter. page 03
Terrorism is a threat to Pakistan and turning a "blind eye" to the problem is no solution, former US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice said. “After the Mumbai attacks in 2008, I came to India, my statement was public. I said it (the attack) was unacceptable and Pakistan must bear some of the responsibility,” Rice said, addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit on Saturday. page 06

PUNJAB CM’S EFFORTS FOR PROMOTION OF FOREIGN INVESTMENT START YIELDING RESULTS LAHORE APP
Efforts of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif with regard to promotion of foreign investment in the province have started yielding results. After the CM offered foreign investors to provide conducive atmosphere for investment, investors of Turkey, China and Iran are taking keen interest in making investment in various sectors. Pak-China friendship and longterm policy of cooperation of the PML-N government with China has also opened new vistas for Chinese investors in various sectors, including textile. Chinese Investment Institution Shandong Ruyi Technology Group Company Limited has announced that it will purchase 52 percent controlling shares of Masood Textile Mills Limited in Pakistan. The textile mill is the largest company of Pakistan regarding export of cotton yarn. The Punjab Board of Investment and Trade and Pak-China Bureau have played an important role with regard to investment and sale and purchase of shares between both companies. Due to the role of both these institutions of the Punjab government, new avenues with regard to foreign investment in textile sector will open.

HE Supreme Court on Saturday identified six ‘missing persons’ who had relatives complaining about their ‘forced disappearance’, saying the country’s powerful army took them into custody from a detention centre. The government earlier produced 14 ‘missing persons’ before Justice Amir Hani Muslim, a member of the three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry which had taken up a case relating to a missing man named Yasin Shah. The missing persons were brought to the premises of the apex court in two vehicles with their faces covered. Attorney General Muneer A. Malik was also present in the court’s premises. Relatives of the missing people launched a legal bid to force the military to produce 35 people who they alleged are being held in ‘unofficial’ military detention at a string of secret investigation centres. The apex court took up the case and ordered the defence ministry to produce these “missing persons”. Acting upon the court's advice, the authorities presented some of the detainees in the court Saturday during an “in camera” session. Of those, six were identified as missing people who had relatives complaining about their disappearance. “Six missing persons, who were presented in the court on Saturday, have been identified,” said Attorney General Muneer A. Malik. The court did not allow media to witness the proceedings. Ataullah, the superintendent of the internment centre in Malakand, had also
SUPERINTENDENT OF MALAKAND INTERNMENT CENTRE ALSO SUMMONED WITH RECORD OF DETAINEES been summoned by the court with all records pertaining to the detentions. Speaking after the proceedings, an official of the Defence Ministry said they had obeyed the court's order to present the missing persons. “We presented these people to obey the court orders and will present more people before the court on Monday or Tuesday to further act on the court directives,” Arif Nazir, a senior official of Defence Ministry, told reporters. To a query regarding the missing persons kept in the tribal areas, Nazir said, “If it had been possible for us to bring missing persons from Kunar, we would have brought here Fazlullah
(chief of banned TTP).” Earlier on Friday, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif did not disclose the names of the 14 missing persons but said that seven of them were living a free life and could be produced whenever the court so desired. Two are internees and information about five others are unsubstantiated but may be confirmed in a day or two, the minister had told the bench during Friday’s hearing. The bench, unsatisfied with the defence minister's explanation, had then ordered the production of the 14 before Justice Amir Hani Muslim at 10.30am on Saturday. Attorney General Malik was also ordered as required to ascertain the status of the persons. The apex court had also obligated the authorities to ensure the presence of one or two relatives of these persons who could identify them and, if needed, Justice Muslim and the attorney general may ask questions to ascertain facts and their status. The court had also ordered
that relatives of two of the internees — Sardar Ali and Nadir Khan who had died on Dec 29 last year and July 1 this year, respectively, in the Lakki Marwat internment centre inside the Malakand garrison — be produced before Justice Muslim to confirm if they had agreed to receive the bodies without autopsy. Defence of Human Rights (DHR), an organisation formed by the relatives of the missing persons, says that around 2,000 people have disappeared from across the country. Last month, a group of over two dozen people – mostly women – marched 700 kilometres (430 miles) from Quetta to Karachi to register their protest over disappearance of their relatives. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who retires on December 12, has actively pursued military and intelligence agencies, which are often seen as untouchable, demanding they explain the fate of missing persons believed to have disappeared into their custody.

ASWJ’s Muawia buried after govt promises to nab killers LAHORE RANA HAIDER Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader Maulana Shamsur Rehman Muawia was buried on Saturday after negotiations between government officials and party members were successfully completed, putting an end to ASWJ’s nationwide protests over the killing.
The Namaz-e-Janaza was supposed to be held on Saturday at 2pm but was delayed by protesters who demanded assurance from the government that the culprits would be arrested. They maintained that until they heard from the authorities, the ASWJ workers would continue to block roads and may even go to the Punjab Assembly to register their
protest. By early Saturday evening, the party ended the protests after a three-member delegation from ASWJ met with the Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) at his office and received an assurance from him regarding arrest of Muawia’s killers. Earlier during the protests, an angry mob shouted slogans outside the Governor’s House
and on Mall Road. ASWJ members also protested in Rawalpindi and Sheikhupura. They blocked the Faisalabad Interchange from all four sides. The motorway to Islamabad from Rawalpindi was also blocked, causing inconvenience to the general public. Murree Road and Kashmir Highway were also blocked by stick-wielding ASWJ supporters. Muawia was shot
dead in Lahore on December 6 by unidentified gunmen. The ASWJ leader was returning home after leading Friday prayers at the Muhammadi Mosque in the Ravi Road locality. On December 6, ASWJ had announced that its members will stage a sit-in on the Islamabad Highway at Faizabad on Saturday to protest the killing of its provincial leader in Lahore. The ASWJ members had rallied at Aabpara Chowk around 5pm on Friday to condemn the killing. The Kashmir Highway and roads leading to Aabpara Chowk had remained closed for over two hours, until the demonstrators started dispersing for Isha prayers around 7pm.

RS100b fOR 100k yOuthS! NAWAZ LAUNCHES ENTREPRENEURFRIENDLY YOUTH BUSINESS LOANS
SAYS EXCESSIVE NATIONALISATION BY PREVIOUS GOVTS DEVASTATED COUNTRY’S INDUSTRY, ECONOMY
SAYS GOVT’S DUTY IS TO PROVIDE SECURITY TO BUSINESSMEN, NOT RUN BUSINESSES ITSELF
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif addresses the launch ceremony of PM's Youth Business Loan Scheme on Saturday. ONLINE
ISLAMABAD MIAN AbRAR
p
RIME Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday launched the entrepreneur-friendly Youth Business Loans programme in a bid to control the spiralling unemployment in the country. The Youth Business Loan programme, which is part of the larger ‘Prime Minister’s Youth Programme’ initiative, is designed to provide subsidised financing at 8 per cent mark-up per annum for 100, 000 beneficiaries
through the National Bank of Pakistan and First Women Bank. Speaking on the occasion, Nawaz Sharif said that excessive nationalisation by previous governments had devastated industry and economy in Pakistan. “It is not the government’s task to be running businesses. That’s for the people to do,” Nawaz said. “The government’s responsibility, rather, lies in delivering the quality of security and law and order as is required by the people.” Nawaz said that everything from banks to mills and even the smallest
industries were nationalised in Pakistan, which hindered the country from running an economy on small enterprises, which other countries like Korea succeeded in. “I was surprised to see that in countries like Korea, these small enterprises form the very crux, the driving force behind the economy.” The PM went on to say that when he was first elected prime minister in 1990, the government privatised many of these industries including banks like Muslim Commercial Bank, Habib Bank Limited and others.
“It’s this privatisation that has borne fruit and made these companies, industries immensely profitable not just for themselves, but for the national exchequer account too.” Nawaz said that statistics indicated that a large percentage of the youth in this country was unemployed. “A large number of hands shot up at every occasion I asked for a show of hands by those who were suffering from unemployment,” he said. “It was heartbreaking to see this number of people unemployed, and to know that no one in Pakistan cared about these people, many of whom were degree-holders too.” Nawaz went on to say while inaugurating the loans scheme that the programme had received accolades and encouragement from various foreign officials. He especially mentioned US President Barack Obama Senator John Kerry while describing the kind of support Pakistan was offered to make an economic recovery. pM’S DREAM FULFILLED: Speaking on the occasion‚ the PM’s daughter and Chairperson of Prime Minister’s Youth Business Loans Maryam Nawaz said the launch is fulfilment of one of Nawaz Sharif’s prime election commitments. “The Rs 100 billion set aside for the programme will be disbursed among 100,000 talented and skilled youth in the next seven months,” she said. “The prime minister was deterred and discouraged by many people, who advised him against the idea of distributing funds to inexperienced youth. But he always said – and I’m witness to this – that we should trust our youth, that investment in youth is investment in the future of Pakistan.” Maryam Nawaz said there are only three conditions for the applicants – that they should be Pakistani‚ they should hold a valid Computerised National Identity Card and lastly, they should have a guarantor. She said forms of the Youth Business Loans will be available from Monday and these would be issued free of cost.
Special counters have been set up at banks and SMEDA offices to facilitate applicants and guide them. She also explained the procedure for the processing of applications and other details of the Youth Business Loans, clarifying that necessary checks have been put in place to ensure transparency of the loans. THE LOANS The total mark up rate would be 15% but the government would pay the remaining seven percent on behalf of applicants. Those falling in the age group of 21 and 45 years are eligible to apply for loans inside the range of Rs0.5 million to Rs2 million. Small business loans with tenure up to seven years plus one year grace period and a debt-equity ratio of 90:10 will be disbursed across the country including four provinces‚ Gilgit-Baltistan‚ Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Federally Administered Tribal Areas. Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority has been tasked with an advisory role in the implementation of Prime Minister’s scheme.
There are only three conditions for the applicants – that they should be Pakistani‚ they should hold a valid Computerised National Identity Card and lastly, they should have a guarantor.

NAWAZ MAKES AN OFFER KAYANI Premier set to expand MAY FIND HARD TO RESIST his cabinet of ministers SOURCES SAY FORMER ARMY CHIEF ‘SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING’ PM’S OFFER TO BECOME SECURITY ADVISER LAHORE SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Although General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani may have called it a day, it seems Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is in no mood to let go off his former army chief easily as he has reportedly offered an advisory role to the retired general which

the latter is said to be considering “quite seriously”, informed sources told Pakistan Today on Saturday. Gen Kayani cast himself in the role of an army chief who resisted the temptation to stretch himself further than the bounds of reason would allow, something which has earned him Prime Minister Sharif’s admiration, said the sources. Even though Gen Kayani's brother Brig (r) Amjad Kayani has said that the former army chief would not take up any job after his retirement, the sources said it was most likely that the prime minister would be able to bring
him onboard his team of advisers. Gen Kayani, retired on November 29, after six years as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff—making him the longest-serving army chief never to take over the country. During his long tenure, the general carved out a new, sleeker role for the army chief, retreating from active involvement in politics even as the army brass kept their control of foreign policy, national security, and certain sectors of the economy—poking the elected civilians, when necessary, from behind a thin veil of non-interference. Kayani jealously guarded the army’s traditional interests, while almost sundering the country’s longstanding alliance with the United States. His appointment in an advisory capacity would mean continuity in Pakistan’s approach ahead of a pullout of most foreign troops from Afghanistan at the end of 2014.
SARTAJ AZIZ LIKELY TO BE INDUCTED IN GOVT’S FINANCE TEAM LAHORE STAFF REPORT
The federal cabinet is likely to be expanded in the next few days as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his kitchen cabinet are mulling a reshuffle in ministerial portfolios, Pakistan Today has learnt. Government sources said that a meeting of the prime minister and his close aides was expected in the next couple of days in which the top party leadership, including Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, would discuss assigning new roles to the prime minister’s team of advisors and special assistants. “Sartaj Aziz, prime minister's adviser on national security and foreign affairs, will most likely be inducted in the government’s finance team,” said the sources. Currently, 16 federal ministers and nine ministers of state are holding various portfolios. Some of them, including Khawaja Asif and Pervaiz Rashid, have been given charge of additional ministries. Two federal advisers and a special assistant to the premier, who were appointed in October, have no official work to do as they have not been allotted any portfolios as yet. Imtiaz Sheikh of the Pir Pagara-led Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) was appointed as special assistant to Nawaz but he is yet to be assigned any specific job.
Same is the case of Ameer Bux Bhutto, son of Sardar Mumtaz Bhutto, who was named as adviser. “The PM has told us that he would shortly induct new ministers and would also reshuffle portfolios. Then we will be given ministries,” Sheikh said. The special assistant has the status of minister of state while the adviser has that of a federal minister, as per the separate official notifications issued on October 28 and October 14. Senior PML-N leader Amir Muqam, who was appointed as adviser to the prime minister, is doing “general work” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and has not been allocated any portfolio. Sources said that Akram Durrani, a former KP minister belonging to the Jamiat Ulema-eIslam-Fazl (JUI-F), is also expected to be taken in as a minister. Under the Constitution, the prime minister is empowered to have a maximum of five advisers. Imtiaz Sheikh’s incorporation brings the tally of special assistants to two with Tariq Fatemi being the other one.

Polling was suspended in Harnai district and a new date for polling would be announced later. Some 5,718 polling stations had been set up in the province for holding of the elections. Some 2,776 were declared highly sensitive, while 1,581 were tagged sensitive by law enforcement agencies. More than 50,000 personnel of police, FC, Balochistan Constabulary and Levies forces were deployed, while 5,325 soldiers of Pakistan Army performed duties at the polling stations. Voters in large number poured into Quetta’s ward-30 where they voiced satisfaction over the security arrangements. Polling staff at few polling stations of Khuzdar and Chaman turned up late causing some delay in the beginning of polling. In Dera Murad Jamali, polling was stopped for the missing election symbol of an independent candidate Mir Hasil Khan Solangi from the ballot papers. Several fake identity cards were used at a women’s polling station for the municipal corporation in Chaman which resulted in a confrontation between supporters of different candidates. At least five people were wounded in a scuffle among the supporters of two candidates in ward-14 in Qila Abdullah. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will issue the local bodies (LB) polls schedule for Sindh on December 9. The electoral body had asked the Punjab and Sindh to fulfill the legal requirements for the polls by December 6. However, both the provinces had sought three and seven more days respectively. The ECP Secretary Ishtiaque Ahmed said that LB elections in Sindh will be held on January 18 and in Punjab on January 30. The secretary also praised the Balochistan government, administration, political parties, political forces and the people for being the first province to hold LB polls in the country. He added that all political parties in Balochistan were satisfied with the preparation and execution of the scheduled plans.

Pakistanis are resilient people: Malala LONDON ONLINE
Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai, an icon for children’s right to education, has said the people of Pakistan are very hospitable and they always come together especially when faced with a crisis. “When we became IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) during Swat operation, people were so forthcoming in their support that we hardly ever felt homeless, it is this national resilience that is not commonly known in the outside world,” she said at the launch of her book at the prestigious Oxford Union on Saturday. Joining the ranks of Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and many other legends who have spoken at Oxford Union, she gave credit to her parents for inspiring her to struggle for the girls’ right to education. She thanked the people from around the world for showing solidarity with her cause. “You only realise the importance of something when it is denied, as happened in Swat. Therefore, people all over the world must come together to realise the universal right to

education in oppressed societies,” said the most favourite nominee of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. During the panel interview, which was attended by a jam-packed audience of Oxford University students and academics, Malala also highlighted the importance of peace and education in Islam and Pashtun culture. Malala said Islam is a peaceful religion. She said “Islam teaches us to be kind towards others. We greet others by saying AssalamAlaikum, which means may you be in peace. Our grand father always reminded us of the Quranic verse that killing one human is like killing all of humanity.”
Islam, she added, gives special importance to education. “The first verse of the Holy Quran to be revealed started with the word ‘Iqra’, meaning ‘learn’. Our Prophet (peace be upon him) said that seek knowledge even in China. These are the values which we learn at home, school and from elders in Pakistan.” Ziauddin Yousafzai, Malala’s father who sat besides her on the occasion, said that contrary to common perception, the desire for peace and education is well-rooted in Pashtun culture. “We must emulate the enlightened creed of Pashtun icons like Khushal Khan Khattack and Baacha Khan, who
taught us the virtue of humanity and knowledge,” he said. “That is why poor families would sell jewellery and whatever little land they have to educate their sons and daughters,” he added when asked about his experience of running a school in Swat. Malala said that her focus will now be on her studies. “Although I miss my school and friends back home, but it is a great learning experience at my school in Birmingham, where we are also taught a great deal about Islam,” she added. On the occasion, she was awarded Honorary Membership of Oxford Union, which was once presided over by Benazir Bhutto.

R Allama Tahirul Qadri’s plan to take on the government in the coming days is already creating ripples in the political circles across the country as to what the cleric is up to this time after a break of about a year from national politics. The Pakistan Awami Tehreek is all set to flex its muscles once again, organising protests in different cities against what it calls the “poor governance of the Sharifs” and increasing corruption and price hike in the country. PAT CHIEF PLANNING MASS PROTESTS AGAINST PML-N GOVT’S ‘CORRUPTION’ address the protest demonstrations and rallies through video link from Canada. His party sources say that Dr Qadri will visit Pakistan early next year most likely on the occasion of Rabiul Awal. The protest campaign will be kicked off from Lahore on December 29, followed by protests in Rawalpindi on January 5, in Karachi January 12 and Peshawar
on January 19. The mandate that Dr Qadri has given to his party is to gather 10 million people to bring about a “revolution” in the country and see the back of the existing political leadership. PAT officials are contacting local political leaders capable of bringing out people to the venue of protests or lend them a hand in mobilizing the people for the cause. In Lahore, the PAT is hoping to organise a protest at Minar-i-Pakistan or somewhere in the heart of the city. “Nawaz Sharif’s recent amnesty scheme for businessmen is an example of blatant corruption. The rulers in fact have made way for the vested interests to le-
galise their wealth amassed through corrupt practices,” said Faizul Islam, the PAT spokesman. As the PAT is busy putting together its plans which will again test Dr Qadri’s abilities to mobilise the people, the rumour mills are active once again in the country. The buzz as before is “who is behind Qadri?” Qadri and Imran Khan closing ranks against the Sharifs in the coming days is also talk of the town. Political analysts believe that Qadri has a mass following. People are aggrieved due to worst condition in the country. As such the situation is tailor-made for a person like Qadri to create some impact.

Imran Khan: change or illusion? Political forces believe PTI chief has failed in living up to his promises of change as the cricketer-turned politician is yet to adopt a credible stance in national politics LAHORE NADEEM SYED
M
OST political forces in the country have given up all hopes of seeing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in a lead role after his failure to adopt a credible stance in national politics in the last six months that could in anyway challenge the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) government and prove his leadership credentials. Interestingly, the promises made by Khan before the general elections, especially after the historic undoing of the Pakistan People’s Party, is no longer there. As such the political forces other than the PPP and PML-N that were once ready to accept his leadership are no longer inclined to forge any alliance under his leadership. It is learnt that leaders from the PTI especially from Punjab often float the idea of forging an alliance to counter and dislodge the ruling PML-N in the coming days, but they have not received a favourable response from any quarter so far. Efforts were once afoot to cobble together an alliance featuring the PTI, Pakistan Awami Tehreek of Dr Tahirul Qadri and Pakistan Muslim
League-Quaid besides other religious and political groups. “But the question is who will lead them? The leadership of Imran Khan is not acceptable in any such political venture,” a senior leader privy to the efforts commented. Political leaders privately say that in the last six months, Khan has failed to adopt any credible stance or rallying call around which other forces could conveniently gather. “It is one of the reasons why no other political force except Jamaat-e-Islami is ready to join the PTI in its anti-drone protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other provinces. “There are more pressing issues that need the attention of the country’s leadership. Look at the price hike and rising unemployment in the country,” said PML-Q President Shujaat Hussain. PTI surprised political observers when it went ahead with its decision to stop the NATO supply route in Peshawar and invited all political parties to join its
protest campaign. Both the government and the opposition benches shared a common thought that the attack on Hakeemullah Mehsud had scuttled the peace process with the Taliban, but the PTI was advised not to ‘fly solo’ in blocking the NATO supply route. The party still went ahead and its chief, Imran Khan, vowed to continue the protest until the drone strikes came to a halt. The PTI blockade has yet to create any impact nationally or regionally. The US and NATO did not attach any importance to the disruption of supplies initially. However, recently, the US declared that the protests did not pose any longterm threat to its plan of leaving Afghanistan using routes through KP. Khan might have scored some brownie points by persistently taking up the issue, but other political parties are not ready to lend the PTI chief a hand in his crusade against the drone strikes inside
Pakistani territory. They believe that Khan is dragging the issue needlessly when hardly any positive outcome can be expected. “It is something in which you cannot do much. You have disrupted NATO supplies, made your presence felt. Now what next can you do? You have lodged an FIR against the CIA over the Hangu drone attack. What’s next? Can you go after the CIA now?” a senior leader opined. Interestingly, in the entire episode, the federal government has remained quite aloof. It never tried to contact the PTI leadership or the provincial government to knock sense in them or assure them that it could handle the situation on its own. It seems the federal government is not ready to take the ownership of the issue. “For the sake of politics or otherwise, it would have been much appropriate if Imran Khan had put pressure on the federal government, forcing it to deal with the issue more convincingly and thereby exposing it,” PML-Q Senator Kamil Ali Agha said. The PPP leadership has also stayed away from the debate of whether the PTI is on the right track. “The standoff between the PTI and PML-N will benefit us. Let them burn their energies and wings on petty issues,” remarked a senior PPP leader, requesting not to be named. The PML-N position on Imran Khan’s initiative is clear but Amir Muqam, a senior leader of the party in KP, added a different dimension to it. “Imran Khan’s drone drama is an attempt to improve his party’s stocks in KP. The provincial government has failed to deliver as per expectations of the people. Hence, it is an attempt to bolster the party’s sinking fortunes in the frontier,” Muqam said.

pml-n troubles won’t end after justice Chaudhry’s exit
While PML-N circles believe their real term in governance will start after Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s retirement on Dec 11, many believe the ruling party may not have a smooth sailing it is anticipating LAHORE NADEEM SYED
T
HINGS will not be much different for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government after the exit of incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and change of guard at the General Headquarters
(GHQ), contrary to popular perception in the country. PML-N circles believe that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and top government functionaries would open up once they see the back of Justice Chaudhry. They expect Nawaz to take vital decisions once Justice Chaudhry leaves the stage, hoping the new CJP will mind his own business or lie low, giving the government a free hand. Some PML-N leaders even think that their real term of governance would start from December 11, when Iftikhar Chaudhry would retire after completing a very eventful and active tenure as chief justice of Pakistan. Interestingly enough, it is the incumbent CJP for whom the PML-N and Nawaz Sharif launched the historic long march that forced the then prime minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani to restore the deposed judges. Even before that, the PML-N leadership quit the coalition government in protest against PPP government’s delaying tactics to restore the judges. But now it is the same PML-N that considers Justice Chaudhry a bit of a hurdle in the execution of their agenda. Political and legal circles, however, harbour different
views on post-Iftikhar Chaudhry period. They say the restoration of NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik by the Islamabad High Court, without involvement of the chief justice or instructions from him should be an eye-opener. These circles maintain that a lot would depend upon the policies and conduct of Justice Tassadaq Hussain Jillani. However, there is a general impression that it would not be an easy task for the new CJP to conduct himself after the judicial activism of Iftikhar Chaudhry. “He will have to strike a delicate balance. He should not appear to be over-board and over-bearing as was the case with Iftikhar Chaudhry. But at the same time he cannot afford to give an impression of a weak person looking the other way while the executive resorts to corrupt and unconstitutional practices. Within no time people would start remembering Iftikhar Chaudhry. He needs to avoid the creation of such perception,” observed a legal expert. It is widely believed that if the government looks for some relief and respite, then it is quite premature to make such expectations. Legal experts say that the new CJP is
a legal-minded person who will prefer to speak through his judgements as opposed to his predecessors, who liked making headlines. It is expected that as opposed to the past, the new CJP will rely less on suo motu notices and would also be little less inclined to dictate to the executive or administration. These experts, however, do not find any place of judicial activism in the post-Iftikhar Chaudhry period. Experts are also convinced that even the new military leadership cannot afford to give much room to Nawaz in the formulation and execution of national security and foreign policy. Senior Pakistan People’s Party leader Tanvir Ashraf Kaira feels the same for the ruling PML-N. “They (PMLN) have kept some important decisions pending in the hope that the new CJP will give them greater liberty. We think their expectations will be dashed sooner than later. The new CJP will continue with the effective interpretation of constitution as done by his predecessor. He will stop the PML-N government from doing anything unconstitutional as happened in the case of the NADRA chairman,” he said.

“Many Pakistanis are tired of terrorists. Their leader Benazir Bhutto was killed by the extremists in 2007,” she added. The former US secretary, however, stressed the need for cooperation, saying, “We have to work with Pakistan.” Rice said the 9/11 attacks on World Trade Centre and Pentagon had changed the concept of security in modern days. Terming Taliban-ruled Afghanistan ‘failed state’ before the US military operations started in the country, she added that “ungoverned territories” and not big nations are the breeding ground for terrorists. Stressing India-US ties, she said the two countries had been sharing intelligence inputs to fight terrorism. “India and the US have worked together to deal with stateless terrorists who kill the innocent.” According to Rice, the “challenge is to stop before a terror attack happens” so that lives can be saved.
new book probes Benazir murder failures 6 years later UN team head singles out Rehman Malik in particular for refusing to give straight answers NEW YORK INP
A
new book brings to a wider audience a theory of cover-up, sweeping blame and staggering security failures behind the 2007 assassination of ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Author and Chilean diplomat Heraldo Munoz headed a damning UN report in 2010 that said Benazir Bhutto’s death could have been prevented and that Pakistan deliberately failed to investigate properly. Now a UN assistant secretary general, his book “Getting Away with Murder: Benazir Bhutto’s Assassination and the Politics of Pakistan”, goes on sale in the United States next week. Oxford-educated Bhutto served twice
as prime minister and had returned from exile to stand in elections when she was killed in a gun and suicide attack on Dec 27, 2007. Six years later, no one has been convicted of her murder. The government at the time blamed the Pakistani Taliban. Munoz compares the assassination to a collective murder plot in a 17th century play and singles out Pakistan’s ex-interior minister in particular for refusing to give straight answers. Asked at a New York launch event whether he feared for his life during his investigation, Munoz said “not really”, but revealed that in around January 2010 he was forced to step up security. “I got a warning from a very trustworthy source that ‘these people’ are capable of anything and
‘these people’ don’t know the world,” he told the audience. Although he never knew who “these people” referred to “I thought maybe we were stepping on some toes,” he said. Munoz likened the best explanation for who killed Bhutto to the 17th century Spanish play “Fuenteovejuna” by Felix Arturo Lope de Vega, in which a village united together to kill a hated commander. Al Qaeda wanted her dead, the Pakistani Taliban executed the attack and local police did a cover-up, Munoz said. Bhutto’s own security failed her and those who encouraged her to return to Pakistan did not provide her with protection, Munoz argues. At one point the US suggested she hire the security contracting firm formerly known as Blackwater, Munoz said, but
Musharraf refused to let foreign agents in. “Political actors, even those close to her, would rather turn the page rather than find out who did it,” he said. “She was clearly a target for the Pakistani Taliban and al Qaeda for sure,” said Munoz. “Sectors of the Pakistani establishment also wanted her dismissed or dead.” He said police were “clearly responsible for a coverup and I’m convinced that came from higher up”. Federal investigators were delayed in accessing the scene, first by cups of tea until it got too dark and then by a big lunch. In the end they collected only 23 pieces of evidence from the washed-down scene where Britain’s Scotland Yard said ordinarily thousands would have been expected. Munoz said it was
ridiculous to imagine that Bhutto’s widower, former president Asif Zardari, had been involved in her death. “He was helpful but I cannot say his whole government was helpful because we encountered all sorts of obstacles,” he said. He said former interior minister Rehman Malik, Bhutto’s head of security, had been in a back-up bullet-proof Mercedes but was nowhere to be found immediately after the attack. “They probably wanted to save their skin, to put it bluntly,” Munoz said. “Never could we get straight answers from him.” The diplomat said guilt was for the courts to decide, but that Musharraf bore “political responsibility” by not providing adequate security to a former prime minister living under threat.

five gunned down, several injured in unabated violence KARACHI STAFF REPORT
At least five persons including two real brothers were killed and several others injured in renewed violent incidents in different localities of Karachi on Saturday. Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies have arrested several accused and recovered arms and drugs from their possession. Police spokesperson said that unidentified motorcyclists opened fire at a hotel near Maskan Chourangi in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, leaving three persons injured and sped away from the scene. The injured including two real brothers Kashif Ahmed, Talib Ahmed and their cousin hailing from Multan were rushed to the hospital but they succumbed to their wounds. The Ahle Sunnat Waljammat (ASWJ) spokesman claimed the deceased were members of their party. SP Muqadas Raza said that 12 shells of 9MM pistol were recovered from the site of the firing. In Baldia Town Sajan Goth area, unknown miscreants gunned down one person. In yet another incident, a robber was killed in exchange of fire with police in Azizabad area of the city. The police recovered arms and stolen motorcycle from the possession of dacoit. Whereas, two security guards of a private company identified as Abbas and Liaquat deployed at the gate of a private apartment in Johr Morr Hill Stop were critically injured in firing by unknown miscreants. More than 10 persons including a woman were reported injured in separate firing incidents in different areas of the city. Meanwhile, a police party was attacked near Lyari Expressway but all remained unhurt while the attackers took to heels after the retaliatory action of security personnel. The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) and Anti Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) during joint action in Landhi Manzal Pump area recovered an abducted trader but the kidnappers managed to escape.
3,000 CRIMINALS ARRESTED DURING TARGETED OPERATION KARACHI STAFF REPORT
k
ARACHI once known as the city of lights has now slipped into the pit of terrorism. Over the years, multiple power houses including groups, individuals and political parties have claimed its authority. But unfortunately, none could prevent it from the plague of target killing, kidnappings for ransom, extortion, gang-wars and worsening law and order conditions. As per the statistics collected, an average of nine persons got killed due to the incidents of target killings on daily basis and monthly around 127 fall prey to target killing with the highest of all was 200 killings in a month. This daunting number of murders by unidentified miscreants has drawn attention of the international community, federal and provincial government alike. The government machinery has come to action and the law enforcement agencies (LAEs) are carrying out targeted operations against the ever-growing lawlessness to ensure durable peace in different areas of the metropolis. Everyday, Sindh Police and Rangers are conducting separate and joint operations in different localities to arrest militants and in doing so they have been successful in arresting hundreds of alleged terrorists. Many a militants have died in cross fire and several law enforcers have embraced martyrdom. Since the launch of this operation, at least 5,000 criminals were arrested jointly by the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) and the Karachi Police, however, the official data clearly mentions that out of these arrested criminals more than 3,000 have been freed due to unavailability of solid proofs. Before the launch of the targeted operation in September 5, 2013, crimes of various natures such as targeted killings, kidnapping for ransom, bhatta mafia, land mafia, existence of strong terrorist gangs and infiltration of banned outfits – Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LEJ), Jaishe-Mohammad (JeM) etc were terrorizing the citizens. The well-trained criminals of the banned outfits TTP, LeJ and other splinter groups infiltrated the city, mainly in the Ittehad Town of Manghopir area, Kanwari Colony, Gulshan-e-Buner of Landhi, Sohrab Goth, and New Karachi Industrial Area. But, soon after coming into power,
POLITICAL-MILITANCY PANDORA BOX OPENED AFTER ARREST OF AIJAZ JAKHRANI
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government showed major concern over this issue and brain stormed to launch multiple plans to gauge this security crisis. According to Rangers officials, the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) during raids apprehended at least 699 criminals in 650 targeted operations in different parts of the city. The arrested included 123 extortionists, 95 target killers, 9 most wanted criminals who would be trailed under the Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) and six from the gangs involved in kidnapping for ransom. Furthermore, in this period some 9 encounters took place in which 17 terrorists and two Rangers personnel embraced martyrdom while four kidnappees were also recovered, and seized 1,324 sophisticated arms like LMGs, SMGs, Pashpapa, short guns, bulletproof jackets and ammunition. In the mean time, the police on the other hand, also conducted more than 500 raids and held 4,300 criminals ranging from target killers to the drug peddlers. According to Rangers and police sources, majority of the alleged target killers belonged to the Muttehida Qaumi Movement (MQM), while there are also some reports claiming the involvement of other political parties i.e. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP). The sources opined that the pandora box was actually opened when the law enforcers arrested the killer of Superintendent of Police (SP) DIG East Range Shah Muhammad. The police apprehended a suspect Aijaz Jakhrani from Korangi area, on his tip the police approached Shujat Hashmi wanted by police in more than 80 murders on ethics grounds. While keeping ahead the crackdown against the criminals, the Rangers party raided a sector office of the MQM in Korangi where the weapons, particularly the LMGs being used by the Indian Army, were recovered in huge quantity. In reaction to the arrests, the MQM leadership came on television screens making a hue and cry of being one-sidedly targeted in the operation. In further development, it was for the first time in Pakistan’s history that the Karachi CCPO Shahid Hayat along with other Rangers senior officers held a joint press conference calling out the names of the target killers from MQM and
LG POLLS BRING POLITICAL PATRONAGE FOR UZAIR JAN, BABA LADLA GROUPS other terrorist organisations. In another operation on the cue of Intelligence Bureau (IB) and ISI, the law enforcers conducted an operation in a graveyard in Mehmoodabad Colony and New Karachi from where huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered. It was later confirmed that the arms were of the NATO supplies that had gone missing from the twin ports. LYARI PARDONED DUE TO LG POLLS: On the other hand, Lyari remains a safe haven for terrorists, neither the ruling PPP-led Sindh government nor the federal government wanted to get involved, as gang-war criminals of this area could play a major role in the upcoming Local Government elections. A committee headed by SP Faisal Bashir Memon comprising the officials of LAEs, with no prior experience of conducting raids, counter terrorism, warfare etc was inducted into the police force. As a result of which, from September 5, at least 32 people were killed and 50 seriously wounded in Lyari alone that clearly reflect that the politics was being done in this area and the two gangs headed by Uzair Jan Baloch and Baba Ladla were enjoying the political support from different political parties. HOME DEPT’S EFFORTS: The provincial government took another step and Sindh’s home department with Rs 30.5 million advertisement campaign requested people to voluntarily surrender their illegal weapons to the concerned offices of commissioners and deputy commissioners. But this scheme miserably met its end as only 18 weapons were surrendered. In yet another plan, the Sindh’s home department sought details of the arms purchase from the 60 licensed arms dealers. However, only two arms dealers have so far submitted their monthly report while the rest did not bother to comply with the notice period, the sources added. According to Sindh Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah, the targeted operation was in full swing and will continue till the restoration of peace on permanent basis. To a query about the success of the operation, the ACS was hopeful that the fruit of the operation will be positive, however, it will take little time. The Rangers spokesman, Colonel Sabtain said that the LAEs were carrying out indiscriminate action against the criminals to bring in
durable peace in the metropolis. More than 700 criminals have so far been nabbed in over 660 targeted operations in different areas of the city. A huge quantity of illegal weapons including LMGs, SMGs, Pashpapa, short guns, bulletproof jackets and ammunition were also recovered. Though people may see their efforts as ‘success’ but unfortunately, the official facts and figures are telling a different story. POLITICAL PARTIES’ STANCE ON KARACHI OPERATION: Sindh Minister for Information and Archives and Local Government Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the ongoing targeted operation will continue even for years till the elimination of the last criminal. The mess in Karachi is 25 to 30 years old, which could not be cleared in a span of merely few weeks or few months, he said, but the Sindh government was committed to restore peace at any cost. The Rangers and police were working against terrorists, despite all unfavorable challenges. Sharjeel said that the LEAs conducted numerous raids in the troubled locality of Lyari as police and Rangers always sprung into action and conducted raids whenever they get any intelligence report about the presence of criminals in Lyari and for that matter in any part of the city. The MQM’s Coordination Committee member Ameenul Haq said that his party had always extended support to the federal as well as provincial government to deal with the criminals iron handedly. However, MQM will not allow violation of fundamental rights of common citizens by the law enforcers. “The law enforcers cordoned-off the whole area, picked up 25 people by declaring them criminals, subject them to torture and then release 22 of them. MQM has always demanded that the operation be conducted without any discrimination, caste, religion and political affiliation, Ameenul Haq said. Sindh PML-N leader MPA Irfanullah Marwat said that his party had launched the targeted operation by extending cooperation with the PPP government. The Sindh chief minister has been the captain of the entire operation, adding that the LAEs should accelerate the pace of operation so that the smaller number of killing could be brought to an end, he added. ANP’s Bashir Jan said that the extremist elements were still operating in the Pashtun-dominated areas of the city and the party leadership fear for their lives. Referring to the threat calls being given to ANP leaders, he said the rangers and police must keep the operation on fast pace. The overall situation must be brought under control before the holding of Local Government elections, he said.

ppp in no mood for lg polls on jan 18 PARTY LEADER SAYS FEDERAL GOVT SHOULD FIRST HOLD NATIONWIDE CENSUS TO DETERMINE POPULATION KARACHI AFTAb CHANNA
w
HILE playing different cards on the issue of local bodies’ elections, the ruling party in Sindh, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) seems in no mood to hold the elections on January 18, 2014. The PPP-led Sindh government has been opposing the holding of local bodies (LB) elections even after the Supreme Court has issued orders in this regard. However, insiders in the PPP disclosed that the party
MEMON SAYS SINDH GOVT WANTS TO HOLD TRANSPARENT LG POLLS BUT JAN 18 NOT A CONDUCIVE DATE leadership is not in favour of holding LB polls in 2014. Reliable sources told Pakistan Today that the Sindh government was ready in terms of preparations but wanted to delay the holding of the elections until 2015. “The leadership tried different cards like raising the issue of delimitations, amendments to the Sindh Local Government Bills 2013 etc. However, they will now insist on holding census in the country before the LG polls are conducted,” a senior PPP leader told Pakistan Today.
“The party leadership wants to clean sweep the LB elections in the province and several elected and non-elected leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League -Functional (PML-F), PML-Quaid (PML-Q) and others are joining the PPP almost every day,” he said. The PPP leader said the population census was being delayed for the last 24 years and it was the need of the hour to first hold the census before going for local government elections. “The local bodies election in Sindh may get delayed for a year as the province is facing serious issues like lawlessness and the targeted operation against criminals etc,” he said.He said that minimum six months would be required for census and in some areas it might be delayed due to law and order or some natural calamity. SINDH GOVT TO DECIDE POLLS DATE: Sindh Minister for Information
and Local Government Sharjeel Memon told Pakistan Today that it was clearly defined under Section-34/2 of the Sindh Local Government Act 2013 that the schedule for conducting LB elections in the province would be decided by the provincial government with consultation of the provincial election commission. “Any announcement made by the provincial election commission on its own will be tantamount to working in violation to the SLGA 2013, which the elected provincial assembly of Sindh had passed,” he added. The minister said the Sindh government wanted to conduct LB polls in the province in a transparent, free and fair atmosphere. “Hence, it is imperative that no haste be manifested in conducting the LG polls in the province. The polls may however be held in March,” he said. Memon said that the LB polls should be
conducted simultaneously in KhyberPakhtunkhawa, Punjab and Sindh and the provincial chapters of the election commission should ensure provisioning and utilisation of magnetic ink and corrected voters’ lists. “It is not only difficult but impossible to conduct local bodies’ polls on January 18. The provincial election commission should conduct LB polls on a date given by the Sindh government.” MQM FOR TIMELY LG POLLS: Commenting on the issue, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Central Information Committee member Ameenul Haq said: “MQM is a democratic party and we want local government elections to be held on time so that power could be transferred to the grassroots level.” “The MQM has completed its preparations for LG elections in Sindh and the party will contest from all over the province,” he said.

Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon on Saturday said that the government will take all possible steps to restore its writ in the provincial capital. He asserted that the targeted operation could not be stopped over the concerns of any political party. Talking to media persons, Sharjeel Memon clarified that action against law violators in Karachi was aimed at ending target killings, extortion, kidnapping for

I will support my sister Tanisha: Kajol Actress Kajol Devgn says she completely supports her sister Tanisha Mukherjee, who is currently participating in ‘Bigg Boss’, despite the reality TV show putting inmates in an “unnatural situation” and “bringing out the worst” in them. Tanisha, 35, has been grabbing eyeballs with her increasing closeness to co-participant Armaan Kohli on the show. Kajol says she watches ‘Bigg Boss’ regularly and feels the show’s format is such that it brings out the worst in the person. “I watch it regularly and I will support her because she is my sister. I don’t think I have any advise for her because that place is such... It puts you in an unnatural situation and compels to get the worst reaction out of you,” said Kajol.
She was accompanied by her husband Ajay Devgn to the event. The couple chatted at length about their love story and how their marriage has worked because they are completely opposite. “We dated for almost four years before getting married and we are best friends. I think our relation has worked only because I speak a lot and he quietly listens. I can go on for hours and he can stay mum for hours... So the secret to our happy married life is that Ajay doesn’t say much,” said Kajol. Adding to this, Ajay joked, “I sometimes listen and sometimes I just pretend to listen.” The couple tied the knot on February 24, 1999 and together raise two kids - Nysa and Yug. NEWS DESK

Alec Baldwin is set to return to TV as a host for the show ‘Private Screenings’ on TCM on January 6. According to Deadline.com, the 55-year-old will be interviewing Robert Osbourne, Fox News reported. Osbourne usually hosts the series but he will switch chairs to get grilled by Baldwin as part of the network’s 20th anniversary celebration. Reps for TCM said that the former ‘30 Rock’ star was chosen because of his long association with the network, including serving as co-host of ‘The Essentials’ from 2009 to 2011. sunny Leone anD her husBanD unDer sCrutIny Actor Ranbir Kapoor feels the perception of him being unfaithful was a bit exaggerated. Ranbir was earlier in a relationship with actress Deepika Padukone and there was buzz about his link-ups with several other actresses. In the upcoming episode of a reality show, host Karan Johar asked Ranbir if he fears the pressure of being faithful after marriage. To this, Ranbir replied, “This perception of me really being this unfaithful dog has been a bit too stretched.” I think if you are in a relationship and if you are a good human being you will be faithful because that’s what you know, you need to be in a relationship because you don’t want your partner to be unfaithful to you... For the next 18 months actress Sunny Leone and her husband Daniel Weber will be under scrutiny. Whatever they say, do, wherever they travel, roving cameras and mics will record their every move. No, this is not for any reality show, but for a film documenting their lives, which will release in 2015. According to sources, a Canadian production house has signed an agreement for this documentary with the couple, besides bagging exclusive rights for the project. The team will capture raw footages for almost 18 months, as per the deal, to bring out the couple’s uncut life on reel. The project will shed light on their personal and professional life, including Sunny’s peaking Bollywood career. Sunny, when asked, confirmed the project. “Filming is already on. After the Indian leg, the production crew will head to another destination with us,” adds Daniel, “We are excited about the project as it will bring out several aspects of our lives.” Sources say the documentary, which is likely to release in two parts,
will also contain activities from behind the scenes. A member of the team, who’s currently in India with them, says, “The project is at a premature stage and right now we are just filming their routines.” Work on installing and setting of cameras in Sunny and Daniel’s hometown has also begun. The project brief goes likes this... In the first installment, their external lives like, profession, meetings, socializing sequences will be canned. And once the couple is back in their home, their personal life will be captured. “It will also talk about Sunny and Daniel’s meeting where they fell for each other. Bollywood and fame is one of the important flavours of the project.” However, as to how will the documentary recreate Sunny’s entry into Indian showbiz is yet to be discussed along with the creative team and Daniel. The project will be released worldwide and is touted to be a major work, which will negate several speculations around the couple’s life currently. NEWS DESK

The actress narrowly defeated Priyanka Chopra, TV star Drashti Dhami and current Box Office queen Deepika Padukone. She secured the top spot in the world-renowned ‘50 Sexiest Asian Women List 2013’ with Chopra coming second, Dhami third and Padukone fourth. A permanent fixture in the top three for the past six years, Kaif beat off competition from the world’s most stunning Asian women in the tenth edition of UK based newspaper’s definitive Sexy List. I like it because the newspaper is the one my sisters see because they live in London. It’s lovely, but also people are reacting to what they see. “Obviously if everyone were to see me when I wake up in the morning or in my track pants and then vote for me, then maybe I would be a little bit more believing of it myself. But of course it’s very flattering,” Katrina said. Like last year, the biggest surprise of 2013 list was the sheer dominance of television actresses from India. Dhami added to a dream year by becoming the first television actress to crack the top three while her friend Sanaya Irani entered the top 10 for the first time at sixth position. Other Indian television actresses who made
the list included last year’s highest new entry Nia Sharma (11), Jennifer Winget (15), Asha Negi (18), Krystle D’Souza (19) and Rubina Dilaik (26). The highest new entry was ‘Aashiqui 2’ star Shraddha Kapoor (12), who narrowly missed out the top 10. The highest placed Pakistani was Humaima Malick (15) and the only non-Indian in the list was ‘Anger Management’ star Noureen DeWulf (10). The American actress, who stars alongside Charlie Sheen in the hit US sitcom, dominated the non-Asian vote. The oldest women in the list were Bollywood icons Madhuri Dixit (23) and Sridevi (40). Other notable stars in this year’s list include Sonam Kapoor (5), Parineeti Chopra (14), Sophie Choudry (21), Mehreen Syed (22), Sunidhi Chauhan (28), Ankita Lokhande (29), Hina Khan (31) and Shreya Ghoshal (43). In a chat with TOI she says... You are the last singing star, after Sonu Nigam and Sunidhi Chauhan, to scale unprecedented heights, after emerging from a reality show, whereas all the other winners have come and vanished into oblivion... So, it’s not that we don’t have talent in our country; the talent is, in fact, not required today. So, it is the music composers, who have failed the talented singers? No! Com-

ITCHELL Johnson produced a blood-curdling display of world-class fast bowling to destroy England in the second Test in Adelaide. Johnson’s sustained menace bore comparison with the great fast-bowling spells of the modern age as he took 5 for 16 in five overs immediately after lunch to leave England in a state of bewilderment. England lost their last seven wickets for 61 runs in a wholesale collapse as bad as any they suffered during the days when they arrived in Australia as lambs to the slaughter. They will fear that lamb is back on the menu. They conceded a first-innings lead of 398 and with the match barely past its mid-point now face the ever-growing likelihood of going 2-0 down in the fiveTest series. And Perth, Johnson’s adopted home ground, the fastest, bounciest track in Australia, is up next. With two days remaining, Australia’s lead is already 530 runs: more than England have managed in three innings combined in this Ashes series. David Warner’s easeful 83 not out dominated a low-key final session after three of Australia’s batsmen fell carelessly to James Anderson and Monty Panesar, who turned one to bowl Michael Clarke, but the talk rarely strayed from Johnson. England were already in disarray at lunch at 4 for 117, which eased Johnson’s path. His ever-lengthening moustache, which he grew for prostate cancer awareness and which he has now kept as a good luck charm, gave the impression that he was a wild fast bowler transported from another age. England will have to hope it eventually grows so long it trips him up. It is a shot Pietersen feasts upon, and such is his determination to keep playing it that even if Australia stationed four short
LAHORE STAFF REPORT Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Irfan was picked for the final T20 against South Africa in Dubai despite carrying niggles. He was to be rested for that game, but ended up injuring his hip and is now likely to miss the series against Sri Lanka in the UAE. The PCB responded quickly by sidelining the team doctor and local trainer and recruiting a foreign physiotherapist to deal with fitness issues. Pakistan had been without a professional physiotherapist since June, after Faisal Hayat left to work in a hospital in Dubai. Since then the PCB had a doctor and a trainer with the team. ESPNcricinfo understands the doctor wanted to rest Irfan for the T20s against South Africa in the UAE, but the team management led by former wicketkeeper Moin Khan wanted Irfan to play because Junaid Khan was not fit. The spinner Abdur Rehman was available for selection but he was not chosen. Irfan’s fitness has been a talking point since he made his debut in 2010 and he played his longest international streak in the UAE. He bowled 65.5 overs in two Tests against South Africa and 13 overs in a game against UAE. Irfan played all five ODIs, bowling 48 overs, and it is understood that he needed adequate time off. In the first T20, Irfan was able to bowl only two overs, and in the second he bowled 1.4 before having to go off the field with a hip injury. Irfan had been rested from the Tests in Zimbabwe in August and was picked only for the limited-overs series, before making a comeback to all formats against South Africa in the UAE. Pakistan suffered several injuries in 2013, with Taufeeq Umar and Harris Sohail returning from South Africa at the start of the year. Umar Gul missed the Champions Trophy with a knee injury and is yet to make a comeback. All-rounder Shoaib Malik and Abdul Razzaq suffered injuries during the South Africa series in the UAE. However, they travelled to South Africa for the series in November but had to return to Pakistan after failing to recover.

midwickets it would probably not quell his desire. Siddle, too, has repeatedly unsettled him around off stump and that has increased his desire to find a get-out shot. But he has fallen in this manner twice in the series and Australia can celebrate a tactical victory. Bell was bent upon playing with natural freedom. He lofted his seventh ball, from Lyon, over long-off for six and, in Lyon’s next over, cleared the rope at longon. It had taken England 35 overs to get their scoring rate above two an over. But Australia checked them again when Harris and Shane Watson produced five successive maidens - the last ball of the fifth of them resulting in the dismissal of Carberry who pulled Watson forcefully and down, only for Warner to pull off an excellent left-handed catch in front of square.
green pitch, overcast skies await India in Durban DURBAN AGENCIES
In their first match on the tour of South Africa in 2006-07, India were bowled out for 91 in a 157-run defeat. Four years later they were blown away for 136 in a thrashing by an innings. On this tour it was the turn of their bowlers to be given a rude welcome. Rude enough for Dale Steyn to surmise that their bowling as it is won’t work, and their batsmen were a little frightened. Once again, India find themselves in a familiar situation of trying to salvage the tour. One more similar day, and they will already have lost the ODI series. There is no time for pleasantries on this whistle-stop tour. There is going to be no let-up in South Africa’s intent. During Johannesburg, some commentators wondered why they weren’t given similarly quick pitches against Pakistan. They won’t have much to complain about here; India have come to a green pitch in Durban, which is hard to distinguish from the square. It is overcast with spells of rain, and is expected to stay so during Sunday too. A tailor couldn’t have cut India’s task out better. South Africa,
though, won’t want to be complacent. They have been in this position before, and have dropped the ball previously too. Against India in 2010-11, they came here jubilant after an innings win, had a somewhat similar pitch and overhead conditions to work with, but were caught out by a rejuvenated India attack that included Zaheer Khan. South Africa have lost a Test here to Sri Lanka, too. Crowd-wise, Durban will be almost a home venue for India. The hosts won’t want to give the spectators much to cheer about.
TEAM NEwS Vernon Philander, who tripped a day before the first ODI and injured his shoulder, is fit and available for selection. That can’t be good news for India. He would have loved the conditions at the Wanderers, and will here too. He should replace one out of Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Wayne Parnell in the XI. An injured Imran Tahir is 50-50 for the selection, but an educated guess after looking at the pitch says he will not be needed.
South Africa (likely) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk) 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Dale Steyn, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Vernon Philander, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe/Wayne Parnell India doesn’t have many quick fixes to their problems. Most of the repair work will have to be done by the same personnel. They could think of bringing in Ajinya Rahane ahead of possibly Yuvraj Singh. Their Test specialists have stayed back in Johannesburg so a slightly drastic step of including Cheteshwar Pujara to bring in solidity has been ruled out. With the ball they might want to bring in a quicker bowler after their first-choice bowlers were found short on pace and menace. Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma are their options. It will be interesting to see if they go for a fourth quick. India (likely) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh/Ajinkya Rahane, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Umesh Yadav/Ishant Sharma, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Mohit Sharma.
Doesn’t matter whether PCB appoints foreign or local coach, says Hafeez LAHORE STAFF REPORT
Pakistan Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez believes that it does not make a difference whether the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appoints a foreign or local coach for the national team. Hafeez also felt that the outgoing Australian coach of the team, Dav Whatmore had done his best. “It does not
make a difference whether we have a foreign or local coach this is a decision to be taken by the board,” Hafeez said. “But I can say this Whatmore also worked hard with us and did his best. The coach can only do things to an extent the rest is up to the players,” he added. Pakistan manager Moin Khan, on the other hand, has spoken out against having a foreign coach for the national team. PCB is due to announce the
appointment of a new coach after Whatmore confirmed recently he would not be seeking an extension of his two year contract with the PCB. In this background, the statements from Moin and Hafeez, both leaving for Dubai for the series against Sri Lanka, carry a lot of significance. “I’ve always favoured a local coach. I said this even when I was not associated with the team as manager. Players can have
a good understanding with a local coach and this can be useful in bringing improvement,” Moin told reporters. “We should utilise services of our former cricketers for the task,” said Moin but expressed his availability for the position. “I am available to serve my country in any capacity.” Moin’s statement before the team departure was being seen as ill-timed by some former players and critics who
believe they would not help the environment in the dressing room for the Lanka series. There was speculation that the interim management committee of the Board at a recent meeting unanimously decided that former captain Inzmamul Haq should be approached with a coaching offer. According to sources, another former captain Waqar Younis is also in the running for the head coach’s position.

Robertson survives fightback LONDON: Neil Robertson overcame a dramatic fightback from Stuart Bingham to win 9-8 and book his place in the final of the williamhill.com UK Championship in York. The Australian led 5-3 at the interval and won the first three frames of the evening session to move to the brink of victory. But Bingham, who defeated Ronnie O'Sullivan in the last eight, had other ideas and battled back to level the match and send it to a deciding frame. And it was Robertson who came out on top after an edgy safety exchange, finally getting his chance to leave Bingham leaving snookers. Bingham led twice before the interval and potted more balls and scored more points in the session. But he would have been relieved to close the gap in the last frame before the interval, having trailed 5-2 following a surge from the world number one from Melbourne. Bingham made the early running and could easily have led 3-1 at the mid-session interval. A 72 break won him the opener and though Robertson responded with 70 in the next, Bingham restored his lead with an excellent 124. The turning point came, though, when after a break of 51 in frame four Bingham broke down and Robertson eventually took the frame with a good clearance of the colours. The Australian made the best of an unpromising position in the first frame back, potting a good long black and judging his cannons well to compile a high-quality 86. AGENCIES

OR New Zealand, it must have felt like spending numerous hours debugging a simplistic computer code, and just when it all looked ready, seeing the message 'core dumped'. Dunedin had been dry for almost 14 sessions, but the rain arrived just before tea on the fifth day to leave New Zealand stranded 33 runs away from their first Test win under Brendon McCullum. The rain intensity seesawed frustratingly before the match was finally called off, the third time New Zealand failed to close out a home Test this year. Thirty-three runs. At the rate they were going, New Zealand would have needed approximately 12 overs, or 50 minutes, to score those runs. West Indies' last three wickets had batted for 81 minutes in the morning, after the double-centurion Darren Bravo had been dismissed in the day's third over. The 38-run partnership between Darren Sammy and Shane Shillingford for the eighth wicket had eaten up 56 minutes. And this is without even considering the dropped catches on the fourth day. Shillingford was instrumental in delaying New Zealand with the ball as well. Venomous on a fifth-day pitch, he bowled unchanged for 15 of the 30 overs in the chase, picking up four top-order wickets to dash any hopes New Zealand might have had of a quick dash to the target. For West Indies, it was an epic escape. They had trailed by 396 runs after a forgettable first innings, were forced to fol-
low-on, and then put up a gutsy fight to take a lead. A draw was a massive boost for a side that did not last three days in both Tests on their recent tour to India. In

pARIS: Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull were officially crowned World Champions for the fourth successive year in Paris at the FIA's annual end-of-season Prize-giving Gala. Six weeks after clinching the 2013 Drivers' and Constructors' Championships at the Indian GP, Vettel and his all-conquering team collected their respective trophies from newly re-elected FIA President Jean Todt. Vettel's fourth title-winning year witnessed the 26-year-old break or equal a host of F1 records - including Alberto Ascari's mark for nine consecutive wins and Michael Schumacher's 13 victories in a season and the German admitted the season had been particularly special. "When I think of the times I've experienced with the team over the last few years, it's incredible," Vettel said. "It's a pleasure to jump in the car each weekend and to try and give it all I have. I'm pushing very hard along with the team and what makes us strong is that we love what we do and we're passionate about racing. was hard with an even cover of grass, bowling 46 over for one wicket. After four days of sunshine, however, the grass had withered and Shillingford was West Indies' only chance of defending 112. Sammy gave him the new ball and it took Shillingford only seven balls to strike. In the last over before lunch, Peter Fulton missed a flick and Denesh Ramdin appealed for a catch down the leg side. Umpire Paul Reiffel said not out but HotSpot highlighted a faint nick after West Indies asked for a review. Two overs later, Aaron Redmond fell into a trap, clipping a sharply turning delivery straight into the hands of Narsingh Deonarine at leg gully.

fact, West Indies had an outside chance at victory after Shillingford's spell. Shillingford had not had an impact in New Zealand's first innings, on a pitch that
Manchester United suffered a second home defeat of the week as they were stunned 1-0 by Newcastle United to further damage their Premier League title hopes. Yohan Cabaye grabbed the crucial goal just after the hour mark as the Magpies claimed their first win at Old Trafford since 1972 to move four points clear of the ninth-placed Red Devils. Best of the match: It was another subdued performance from David Moyes' men after their 1-0 loss to Everton on Wednesday, as Robin van Persie had a goal disallowed for
offside and Patrice Evra hit the post. Tim Krul also made a couple of decent saves but Newcastle were good value for their victory, which leaves Man United 12 points off top spot, having played a game more than Arsenal, and increases the pressure on Moyes. Seven changes from the midweek defeat by Everton, including the return of Van Persie following a four-match absence with a groin strain, should have had a positive impact. But the additional mobility compared to Wednesday was lost amid the tentativeness of a team who looked scared to lose in front of a crowd on the brink of a very negative reaction. Too often invention was spurned in favour of safety, which in turn reinforced the defences of a solid Newcastle outfit, who never looked in danger of coughing up the type of goals they did at Swansea on their last outing. Player-of-the-month Krul pulled off a decent save from Phil Jones in the early stages but had little else to do in the firsthalf. Fabricio Coloccini made an excellent clearing header to prevent Nemanja Vidic getting to Adnan Januzaj's cross, whilst the youngster was robbed in the box brilliantly by Yoan Gouffran. Javier Hernandez also had a penalty appeals rightly waved away when he dived in the box, but United rarely threatened. With Cheick Tiote controlling midfield and Loic Remy remaining on the move, United's defence did not look as settled as Newcastle's. And when Evra was caught out of position, it allowed Remy to slide a brilliant pass through for Mathieu Debuchy, whose thunderous first-time shot was turned away one-handed by David de Gea.

Manley eyes maiden win HONG KONG AGENCIES
Stuart Manley of Wales will take a onestroke lead into the final round of the Hong Kong Open on Sunday as he heads a tightly-packed leaderboard. A total of 13 players are within four shots of the leader at Fanling including three-time champion Miguel Angel Jimenez who is now very much within striking distance just two back following a joint best-ofthe-day 65. Manley - who shot to prominence at the World Cup of Golf last month where he followed a hole-in-one with an 11, before finally finishing in a tie for eighth - compiled a 66 to finish 'moving day' at 10-under-par. The 34-year-old, whose best finish in a regular European Tour event was a tie for ninth in Mallorca in 2011, mixed six birdies with a couple of bogeys to maintain his solid progress after consecutive 67s. "Pretty much from the first hole on-
wards, every iron shot was right down the pin," said Manley. "If it had been a good day on the greens it could have been a really low round, so it was disappointing not to capitalise, but I feel very confident the way I'm playing and I'm really excited about Sunday. "I wanted to be leading after
three rounds, and I wanted to be in the last group, so I'm delighted. There's a lot of golf left, but winning would mean the world." One of Manley's blemishes came at the 16th, where his approach landed on a sprinkler head on the fringe of the green and cannoned 60 feet beyond the pin.
tiger surges two clear hONG KONG: Tiger Woods blitzed the field with a scintillating second round of 62 to take a two-shot lead at the halfway point of his own Northwestern Mutual World Challenge tournament. The World No.1, who plays host at the Sherwood Country Club, tied the course record with a flawless performance that saw him rack up ten birdies, five on the front and five on the back nine. It saw the 37-year-old surge to the top of the leaderboard at 11-under-par, two clear of his nearest challenger, and overnight leader, Zach Johnson. Woods' day-two efforts were a far cry from his opening round, which began with a bogey on the first before he made gains at five and 11. AGENCIES

LONDON AGENCIES Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has led calls for loan deals to be treated in the same manner as permanent transfers. The Premier League leaders face Everton on Sunday, with the Toffees benefitting from the services of in-form Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku. Belgium international Lukaku has netted eight goals since joining the club on a seasonlong loan deal, sparking much debate about the nature of loan deals within the top flight. Lukaku is not allowed to face parent club Chelsea and Wenger believes the 20-year-old powerful striker is the prime example of why loan moves should be dealt with in the same way as a full transfer. "Once you are on loan, it should be a transfer - you play for the club," he said. "You cannot play for the club only in 19 games and not against another club. "If Lukaku didn't play for Everton, somebody else would play. I don't make a fuss of that, and it is our performance that will dictate the result on Sunday not only Lukaku. He is a good player, but the rules are the rules and we have to accept the rules. "If you ask me my opinion, I am not against loans, but you should be capable to play against everybody." –Arsene Wenger

Sturm on unfamiliar ground LONDON: Felix Sturm heads into tonight's world middleweight title clash against Darren Barker in Stuttgart on unfamiliar ground. Sturm, who has only fought once outside of Germany in 44 fights and will again enjoy home advantage, will face an English boxer as challenger for the first time. The former 32-year-old fought English fighters backto-back two years ago, claiming a controversial split decision over Matthew Macklin in June and then six months later ground out a draw against Martin Murray to escape with his WBA crown. Daniel Geal dethroned Sturm to claim the IBF crown last September, defended it against fellow Australian Antony Mundine four months later before losing it to Barker in Atlantic City in August. Sturm is now looking forwarding to tackling an Englishman as underdog for the first time. AGENCIES

EALING up a World Cup draw full of intrigue, FIFA on Friday set up a tantalising group phase at next year´s World Cup where reigning champions Spain will open their defence with a rematch of the 2010 final against the Netherlands. The draw in the northeastern beach resort of Costa do Sauipe saw a variety of other subplots with England drawn in a group containing three former champions -- themselves, fourtime winners Italy and twice winners Uruguay -- as well as Costa Rica. Spain, who won their first title in South Africa four years ago, start their

England, meanwhile, will start off with a Group D meeting against four-time champions Italy in the heat of Amazonian venue Manaus on June 14 -- though it is at least an evening kick-off. That match is a repeat of the Euro 2012 quarter-final, which Italy, who knocked England out of the 1978 World Cup qualifiers, won on penalties. "It´s a tough group, there´s no doubt about that," said England coach Roy Hodgson, whose team also face Uruguay, a third former champion in their group, and Costa Rica.

mcenroe wants doubles axed Tennis legend John McEnroe has called for doubles to be scrapped at grand slam tournaments. The 54-year-old American was hugely successful in the doubles format throughout his career, winning nine major titles to eclipse his seven singles crowns. But the former world No 1, who won 71 career ATP doubles titles - 57 of them with Peter Fleming - believes doubles no longer has any place at the big events as the elite players no longer take part. "Why we are even playing doubles at this point is a mystery to me," McEnroe told the Daily Telegraph. "I love doubles but I don't even recognise what this is. "If there was a volleying contest from the service line, most of these guys couldn't. They play an inch from the net. It is like wham, bam, thank you ma'am. "If you cut out doubles and gave that money to singles players ranked between 200 and 1,000, maybe that would do something for the game.

Barker and Sturm make weight SPORTS DESK Darren Barker and Felix Sturm looked in peak condition as they made weight for Saturday's world title clash in Stuttgart. Barker is defending his IBF middleweight belt for the first time and there were loud cheers from his large travelling support as he tipped the scales at 11st 5lbs. Sturm was 10 ounces under the 11st 6lbs limit and the two fighters displayed little emotion during the customary faceoff before Barker raised a fist to his vocal fans. The Barnet man is targeting a lengthy reign as champion and hopes to start his spell in style against Sturm. "When preparation has been perfect you look forward to getting in there and that's where I am right now - I just can't wait to get in there and do my thing," said Barker. "I've got a small and close team

I am as hungry as I've ever been, I'm proud to be a world champion and I want to have a long reign. "Coming out to Germany to fight one of their great champions is a big statement. I've won the title abroad and I'm defending it abroad - it's a sign of my belief that I will beat him and move towards securing a legacy in this great division."

OALITION and Afghan officials are continuing to plan for a US military advisory role after 2014 when the current combat mission ends despite the political uncertainty created by President Hamid Karzai's reluctance to sign a security agreement, US officials were quoted by USA Today newspaper on Saturday. "There's definitely not a feeling of
COALITION OFFICIALS SAY AFGHAN FORCES HAVE PROVED EFFECTIVE AT BEATING TALIBAN AND DON'T REQUIRE ADVISERS abandonment," said Marine Maj Gen Joseph Osterman, a coalition operations officer. "We're continuing to do what we plan to do in terms of working with the Afghan forces," Osterman said in an interview from Afghanistan. "We told them that. We're not letting off on that until obviously the policymakers tell us we need to change." Karzai's reluctance to sign the agreement soon has raised the prospect that all coalition forces could be removed by the end of next year. "I have not been told to plan for a zero option, but clearly, I under-
stand that it is a possibility, given the current impasse," Gen Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said this week. If that impasse continues military officials worry that political uncertainty will undermine the progress the coalition has made in improving the combat effectiveness of Afghan security forces. "What's hanging in the balance in Afghanistan is confidence," Dempsey said. Coalition officials are left with the task of easing Afghan worries. "Until a decision is made both the Afghan forces and the coalition forces are just going to keep on the same track we have been in terms of the mission planning and the support and everything else that we planned to provide not only through 2014 but into 2015," Osterman said. The bilateral security agreement would grant the United States legal jurisdiction over its own forces in Afghanistan after 2014, a requirement that needed to be included before Washington would agree to deploy
forces there after the current mission ends. Coalition officials are planning for a limited advisory mission after 2014 that would place American officers and senior non-commissioned officers at the top headquarters, or corps level, within Afghan security forces. Except for the possibility of occasional visits to operational units, they would not accompany Afghan forces in the field. "It's not the classic thought of an adviser being out toting a rifle out on patrol," Osterman said. Coalition military officials say Afghan forces have proved effective at beating the Taliban on the battlefield and don't require advisers embedded in operational units in the field. Instead, they need support in building systems that allow the Afghan army to sustain itself in the field for long periods of time, such as getting food and ammunition to troops deployed around the country. "Tactically the insurgents can't stand up to them on the battlefield," Osterman said.
Coalition officers say Afghan forces performed well this past summer, their first fighting season in which they operated largely independently. In addition to advisers, the coalition may also be able to provide some helicopter and fixed wing support after 2014, though much less than in previous years when Afghan and coalition forces teamed up for operations. The Pentagon has also said it plans to keep a counter-terrorism force in the country capable of targeting al-Qaeda or affiliated organizations. Some analysts worry that the number of US forces under consideration now is too small and reflects the Obama administration's pressure on the Pentagon to keep numbers low. "With those kind of force levels you're asking for trouble," said Seth Jones, an analyst at RAND Corp. and author of In the Graveyard of Empires: America's war in Afghanistan. "I don't think you can do that much."

NSA DEFENDS GLOBAL CELLPHONE TRACKING AS LEGAL WASHINGTON AGENCIES
The National Security Agency on Friday said its tracking of cellphones overseas is legally authorised under a sweeping US presidential order. The distinction means the extraordinary surveillance program is not overseen by a secretive US intelligence court but is regulated by some US lawmakers, Obama administration insiders and inspectors general. Documents obtained from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden showed that the NSA gathers as many as five billion records every day about the location data for hundreds of millions of cellphones worldwide by tapping into cables that carry international cellphone traffic. The Washington Post said the collection inadvertently scoops up an unknown amount of US data as well. The NSA said Friday it was not tracking every foreign phone call and said it takes measures to limit how much US data is collected. The NSA has declined to provide any estimates about the number of Americans whose cellphones it has tracked because they were traveling overseas or their data was irrevocably included in information about foreigners' cellphones. ''It is not ubiquitous,'' NSA spokeswoman Vanee Vines said in a statement. ''NSA does not know and cannot track the location of every cell phone.''
ManDeLa was onCe BranDeD a ‘terrorIst’ By us WASHINGTON AGENCIES
In 2008, just before his 90th birthday, the United States gave Nelson Mandela a special present, striking him from a decades-old terror watch list and ending what US officials called “a rather embarrassing matter”. By then the anti-apartheid icon had long left behind the jail cells where he was incarcerated for 27 years, and was already enjoying retirement and his status as one of the most revered statesmen of the 20th century after becoming South Africa’s first black president. In past years, US officials have beaten a path to his door in his family village hoping some of his almost saintlike aura would rub off on them. On Thursday, President Barack Obama hailed him as belonging “to the ages” and ordered that flags on US government buildings be flown at half-mast — a rare tribute to a foreign leader. Yet decades ago many in America did not share in the adulation of Mandela and his African National Congress (ANC), which had been billed a terrorist organisation by both South Africa and the United States. His severest rightwing critics painted him as an unrepentant terrorist and a communist sympathiser.
It was even reported that the CIA had helped engineer Mandela’s 1962 arrest when an agent inside the ANC supplied South African security officials with a tip-off to track him down. In the 1980s, however, late Democratic US senator Ted Kennedy drafted legislation with senator Lowell Weicker that would eventually become one of the global catalysts leading to the collapse of the apartheid system. President Ronald Reagan sought to bury their 1986 anti-apartheid bill aiming to impose economic sanctions on South Africa by imposing his veto, saying he believed it would only lead to more violence and repression for black South Africans. But for the first and only time
that century, Congress rebelled and overrode Reagan’s veto on a foreign policy issue, passing legislation that slapped sanctions on Pretoria, snapped direct air links and cut vital aid. Some observers maintain that the story of Mandela’s redemption and the undeniable justness of his cause hold unique lessons for Washington as it grapples with other flagrant abuses of human rights by repressive regimes around the world. Until five years ago, Mandela and other members of the ANC remained on the US terror watch list because of their armed struggle against the apartheid regime, which yielded to majority rule in the mid-1990s. The designation meant that the US State Department had to issue them with a waiver to enter the country for meetings such as the UN General Assembly, something former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice said she found “embarrassing”. When Mandela was finally removed from the list in 2008, then senator and current Secretary of State John Kerry, said: “He had no place on our government’s terror watch list, and I’m pleased to see this bill finally become law.” In a televised address from the White House on Thursday, Obama said Mandela was “a man who took history in his hands and bent the arc of the moral universe towards justice”.

The US Air Force has secretly developed a new stealth drone for long-range reconnaissance missions that could be operational by 2015, according to a report in an industry magazine. “The unmanned drone, dubbed RQ-180, is currently in the testing phase at the top secret Groom Lake air base in Nevada - the infamous ‘Area 51’ where the Air Force tested the U2 spy planes in the late 1950s,” Aviation Week said. The Air Force refused to comment when contacted by media. The new aircraft was reportedly built by Northrop Grumann, the company behind the Global Hawk and the X-47B drones, which landed on air craft carriers for the first time this summer. The US company may have obtained in 2008 a secret contract on the order of $2 billion to develop the latest drone, according to Aviation Week. An artistic rendering of the RQ-180 on the cover of the magazine shows a craft with striking resemblance to the X-47B, in particular in lack of rear stabiliser and its so-called "batwing" shape. It was developed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, but "could also be capable of electronic attack missions," the magazine said. It is similar in size and endurance to the Global Hawk, which can fly for 24 hours up to 1,200 nautical miles (2,000 kilometers) from its base. A first generation of unmanned aircrafts, the non-stealthy Reapers and Global Hawks, were used in Afghanistan and Iraq, but they were deemed too vulnerable in enemy territory equipped with powerful anti-aircraft defenses. Now the Air Force is slowly turning to stealth drones, better at passing safely over unfriendly territory. In December 2011, a spydrone that had until then been secret, the RQ-170 Sentinel, crashed 155 miles (250 kilometers) inside Iranian air space. The unmanned craft, which had taken off from Afghanistan, was on a mission to observe Iran's nuclear sites for the CIA, according to US press reports. According to Aviation Week, the new RQ-180 "eclipses the smaller, less stealthy and shorterrange RQ-170 Sentinel".
