It’s been a world wind for sure. Let us first start with the ever expanding space of low cost carriers. Few weeks ago, Wizz air took me (and Mrs. K) across from Brussels to Bucharest for all of Euro 69.99, never mind that I had to pay Euro 50 for all the extra baggage I hauled. Low cost travel is really defined by all the low points, an airport that is miles from civilization, fellow passengers that are an assortment of the socio economic class and service without a smile. Bucharest (hi Max), itself however is a majestic capital of this fabled nation- its wide boulevards, green spaces and replica Arc De Triumph made it known as the Paris of Eastern Europe, however the cruel rule of Nicolae Ceausescu made the country a living hell. After more than two decades of a brutal regime, the people finally fought back and he and his wife were killed by a firing squad. Sadly, Romania still is haunted by its past and its development indicators are one of the lowest of the EU countries. If you do end up there, then a visit to the parliament (Palace of the People) is a must to see what misguided ventures dictators do. The building is the world’s largest (1,100 rooms), most expensive and heaviest building. Also the night life around Lipscani in the old town is spectacular and something one day I hope we can emulate in our own desi way in the walled city of Lahore. Speaking of which Baoli Bagh hidden 42

From Henri Coanda Airport, Pegasus jetted us across to Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Istanbul. One can tell a lot about a country based on who adorns their bank notes and airports. Henri was a great inventor and one of the early pioneers of the Jet, and Sabiha was the world first female combat pilot. A weekend in Istanbul is always good for the senses. Shack up someplace in Nisantis (shout out to our host, Umut) to see the well- heeled Turks. These days, Duble at top of the Palazzo Donizetti hotel is the place to eat, with the postcard view of Istanbul, its fusion mezze and everything is tasted by the owner to ensure the right taste, though you have to book weeks ahead. Then head over to Stay, which is Levent’s new brainchild, for dancing it out in the tiny streets of Asmali Mescit. From Istanbul, it was time for a trip to the Allama Iqbal Airport (Poet), in Lahore, though thanks to the fog it was not a short hop. Lahore, well as Lahore should be in December. Decadent, delicious and dangerously cold. Yes we all know about the shortages of gas, electricity, common sense that are abundant back home, so I won’t dwell on that. But this is an appeal to install solar water heaters all over the city, the Turks make them mighty cheap. I know better than to say anything about Lahories, as I don’t want to shatter the glass house I myself abode. Back home though two topics seem to be trending. One is of course the heroic Aitzaz Hasan. Who died in a way no teenager should ever die (tackling a suicide bomber). So, I salute him for his bravery and sadden at the very act of bombing a school. The chickens are back home to roost, dear politicians and ISI, be warned as we all will be next. The other topic are the awful awful, judges of Pakistani Idol. In our culture it takes a brave soul to bare themselves and sing in public, especially girls. Ali Azmat, you will never have the wit or hair of Simon, so try being a nice guy for once. Insulting someone is just not on, and some of the contestants are actually very good. Maria Meer, you were great, thanks Ammanat for taking her on (check her out on facebook.com/AmanatAliOfficial) and you already are a bigger star then those that miss-judged you. As you know we are well into the New Year so let’s all try to be a better person, let us be thankful for all we have and please let’s share the abundance some of us are gifted with. On the literary front, I just picked up Critical Muslim’s edition on Pakistan which features a number of good authors. Would encourage you to get a few copies and read and distribute. I’m sure The Last Word would carry some.
