MOUNTAIN VIEW BUS SHELTER 2015 SHAC CHALLENGE WINNER Inspired by the scenic mountain view of Mt. Hutt from the site, the bus shelter allows the public to enjoy the spectacular scenery while waiting for the bus to arrive. It incorporates natural materials such as strawbale, local wood, (Douglas fir), and green roofing providing a sustainable and aesthetically pleasing shelter for both the tourists and the local community of Methven.

URBAN SCHOOL 2015 We designed a local school for around 200 students in an urban setting, situated on the inner-city suburb of Newton street. The aim for this project was to further our exploration of form, space, materiality and technology, and to create a sustainable building that is functional and comfortable to the occupants. To achieve an effective passive design structure, full consideration and analysis of the building’s relationship with the site and context was significant throughout the design process. The shape and orientation of the school was successfully designed to take advantage of the site’s conditions, and to help the building contribute to the health and vitality of the surrounding social communities. Its structure surrounds a central courtyard creating an enjoyable and interactive building for the students.
4
BIRD HIDE 2016 The aim for this project is to bring bird life back to Matuki Link and in this design, it comprises a long walkway to one entry point into the viewing space which sits on a dominant site that overlooks the idyllic landscape. The bird hide is made from weathering steel (Corten) that are perforated with leaf patterns designed to resemble the natural surroundings which also creates shadows that allows to camouflage the bird hide.
5
FOLLY ARCHITECTURE 2016 In architecture, a folly is a decorative building that does not serve much of a practical purpose. In this folly, it was created by the process of folding and cutting paper models to find the essential connection among paper and geometry. The final design of the folly was created from a thick paper and can serve as a sculpture, architectural installation, and a public space that people can rest and enjoy the site.
6
RIBBON 2016 “Ribbon” is a team of designers that focuses on exploring the different uses of, and ways, to extend the lives of the chosen waste materials (steel purloins and plastic bottles) by making a beautiful and engaging piece of temporary architecture – the installation invites the public to walk through the 10m space created and observe the structure from several viewpoints.
7
By cutting plastic bottles into strings, we are effectively upcycling – the resulting plastic string is durable and has the potential to be used in
.
everyday life over a long period of time, as opposed to the bottles themselves which are generally only used once and then recycled or thrown out. These plastic ribbons dress a supporting structure that is fabricated from steel purlins, which come from a waste stream from the Hornby factory of FESTA Dynamo sponsor Metalcraft Roofing. By using materials familiar to the public, we hope to encourage awareness of how anybody could make a difference in their daily lives through the repurposing of materials.

THE WHARE AT THE PAH 2017 The building known as ‘the Whare at the Pah’ is identified as heritage building located adjacent to the Pah homestead in Monte Cecilia Park in Hillsborough, Auckland. It remains in use for resource storage, a small central hall space, and meeting areas within the primary school complex which is generally in fair to poor condition. The aim of this project is to repair and restore the whare turning it into a community art centre. The proposed design is clad with vertical timber board and batten with double glazed windows. The entrance porch will be reformed based on the original plan, while the open veranda will be reinstated on the north side of the building between the two side buildings. The roofing will be replaced with Colorsteel roofing with insulation and an accessible outdoor space will be added on the south side of the building for functional and communal use. Overall, the main idea of this project is to design a community centre with suitable and affordable design to keep its cultural and historical value and provide a unique place for the community.
9
BEEKEEPING AND CONTEMPLATIVE CENTRE 2019
The architectural design of the centre encourages a sense of community, collaboration, and improvement through informal and formal spaces for interaction and contemplation. This is accomplished through the introduction of new habitat and addition of pollinators, specifically bees to the site. Beekeeping and the habitat created for pollinators gives a therapeutic opportunity that does not commonly exist in the urban environment. The rectilinear building features rammed earth walls that were made of soil excavated from the site. The heaviness of the earthen walls is contrasted with large expanses of glass and screens made of thin cedar strips.
10
The centre is conceived of as a unification of art, landscape and architecture to both replenish and invigorate the spirit.
11
The project is made with rammed earth walls, which will add to the building’s natural, sensory experience.
