The joke while I was in studying in undergrad was that I was “the child of studio. I am curious about everything. I want to question and touch everything. I believe that life is meant to be enjoyed and that architecture can be used as a tool to spread positivity and a childish wonder.

project Overview: The goal of this project was to create a “social incubator to revitalize the downtown area of Fountain Inn. Presently, Main Street acts as a highway for traffic to and from the suburbs and the more urban city of Greenville. The street is flanked with vacant parking lots and buildings in disuse and disrepair. Besides the farmer’s market, there is little to entice the citizens to congregate downtown. The Art Center will act as a node for the community to gather in order to socialize, to learn, and to excerise both their bodies and minds. It will provide a venue for education and entertainment. It caters to both adults and children alike; offering a locale to host classes, meetings, and other communal activities . 4

DESIGN + BUILD

CLEMSON UNIVERSITY: STUDIO SOUTH SUMMER 2012 10 The Rain Garden Pavilion

project Overview: Twice a year, the South Carolina Botanical Gardens (SCBG) host a plant sale. As luck would have it, the weather does not always cooperate. To solve this persisting problem, the SCBG commissioned Clemson University to design and build a pavilion. The pavilion was to provide shelter and protection from the elements. It was also to be used for commerical, recreational, and educational purposes. For example, it could provide a place to hold potting seminars or could be rented out to host social gatherings. Although storms were our initial enemies, we sought to not only create a safe haven from the weather but to also turn the rainfall into a scultpural element. We further hoped to use this project as a learning tool to teach others about the importance of sustainability.

project Overview: The River Arts District intends to build a greenway that will provide pedestrans and cyclists with a continuous pathway along the French Broad River. In order to achieve this, however, many small streams must first be bridged. The Asheville Design Center (ADC) offered to help. This particular bridge proved to be a challenge as we sought to engage the members of the community, to collaborate with the Department of Transportation, and to eventually redesign what was to originally supposed to be a footbridge to have the ability to support the weight of an ambulance.
