Designs have the power to shape not only the physical environment, but also the emotional and psychological experiences of those who inhabit the spaces we create. By designing for the inner-child, we have the opportunity to tap into the innate sense of wonder and curiosity that exists within all of us, and create spaces that inspire and engage the imagination. My goal as a designer is to find the romance in everyday moments, and make playful discoveries that enhance the human experience for everyone involved.

Rethinking Typology

This project’s program is a bit different from your typical shelter, with a focus on rehabilitation of families affected by domestic abuse. It is the next step after emergency housing. It follows the cohousing typology, where a group of living units are supported by a community program that everyone has access to. The complexity of this has never been done before, so the cohousing model pushes the boundaries of what we think a typical shelter should be, but the risks involved with doing so are well worth the growth that can happen in a place like

Assembly

The building’s structure uses mass timber construction- specifically CLT. In the community house, It is composed of a post and beam grid with wooden stud and CLT walls for lateral support. In bungalows, entire slabs serve as the structure for both walls and roof. Systems become both embedded into the CLT slabs and

exposed in areas where ceilings are high. Most of the building and bungalows are clad in a limestone-colored terra-cotta tile system, yet the community hall is clad in a standing seam metal, mostly because of its size but also it’s difference in program.

Dining Details

Due to the autonomous nature of this facility, it was important to think of ways to invite people to spend time within community space. Although bungalows are equipped with their own kitchen, larger gatherings like group therapies and birthday parties will be able to meet and use the community kitchen.

The community kitchen is designed to be durable, but enjoyable for multiple families to reside in at one time.

Integrated cabinetry provides outlets, inviting people to spend more time in community space.

The San Pedro Creek Culture Park is a linear park in San Antonio, Texas that was opened in 2018. It is a project of the San Antonio River Authority and Bexar County, and was designed to celebrate the history and culture of San Antonio, as well as to provide a new public space for the community to enjoy.

The park features public art, landscaping, and educational elements that tell the story of the Creek and its role in the history of San Antonio. It is significant

because it represents a new way of thinking about urban development, in which community and cultural identity are prioritized alongside economic development. Being right next to our site, it is the perfect opportunity to display art, hold cultural events, and open up to community gatherings. This is where the new home of the San Antonio Museum for New Americans will be.

Essence Of Place - San Antonio

Design started with four conceptual art pieces to derive the essence of place. It was translated into the essence of our architecture. San Antonio represents an activation of place by the people, celebration, with a history of colonization alongside an existing, complex and vibrant community of people.

The Journey

Many immigrants experience leaving everything behind, packing their whole life into a bag in pursuit of a new life. For parents it is a selfless act, in hopes that they will be giving their children a chance to thrive.

The Pursuit

The culmination of these explorations comes to the idea of pursuit. Pursuit of a new life, and in this museum the pursuit of empathy and understanding in other cultures.

PORTFOLIO 17

Ascending in Pursuit

Galleries in the museum are organized to tell the story of immigration in San Antonio. In the lower levels, historical exhibits bring context. As you ascend, rotating storytelling exhibitions explore specific accounts of families that have made their home in the city. Adjacent to a teaching kitchen and dance

space is a lecture room for local organizations to hold events. The top floor of the museum is dedicated to first generation artists, so that they may hold art exhibits and complete residency with local community members. This space has views out through the city, making it special for those called to it.

Itzel Vilchez is a first-generation multimedia artist and printmaker practicing in San Antonio. She has graciously shared her art for the renders above. She is active in her community of latinx printmakers and her art speaks to growing up in Mexican

Community engagement was crucial to the schematic design of this project. Multiple residents of San Antonio and the latinx community were consulted and have generously shared their art with me. Their

work is inspired by their surroundings, personal experiences, and love of color. They have done several murals in the city and are part of an all female collaborative space known as Lavaca Studios.

BODY BODY MIND MIND

“As a whole, atmosphere behaves as the sign impressed on our senses and our intellect by the experience of architectonic space”

Canepa, 2022

Overview

The emotional potential radiated by the built environment makes up what we know as atmosphere. Architectural atmospheres define a state of resonance and identification (emotive and cognitive) between an individual and their built surroundings. In recent developments, architecture has begun to interact with cognitive neuroscience. Neuroscience, in collaboration with architecture can evolve the study of how people perceive sensory properties that compose a room. By studying body schema, physical affordances, and

architectural generators of atmosphere, we are able to better understand the illusive nature of atmosphere. This hypothesis runs congruent with the development of our Master Thesis project, and the following explorations of body, mind, and space take into account how we might go about plan for atmospheres. In order of plan, section, and elevation, the next three projects exercise our understanding of plan as choreography, section as program, and elevation through the lens of delineation.

Overview - Jesika

Jesika plans to use this space as a retreat from her busy life as a designer where she can be surrounded by the objects she has collected through her travels, and feel the warmth of the heirlooms passed down through her family. Her partner is a distinguished literature professor, and together they enjoy getting lost in books.

Objects & Routines

Jesika’s collection is extremely diverse, ranging from milk-glass vases, to vinyl records, to gemstones, hundreds of books, and even replica Egyptian artifacts. She enjoys reconfiguring her objects every few weeks, placing her favorites at the front of the room.

Existing Conditions

This apartment will house Jesika, her partner, and their 12 year old daughter. They will need a small spare bedroom for the occasional visitor. The shell for this space is on the 8th floor of Via Quadronno by Angelo Mangiarotti & Bruno Morassutti in Milan, Italy.

PORTFOLIO 27

Floor Plan - Choreography

Jesika’s plan follows her routine. When she arrives home, she will be met with the collections that fill her home. She can take her shoes off, grab a book, and head straight for her vintage wingback chairs at the fireplace. In the morning, she can retrieve her cup of coffee from the kitchen without seeing

anyone though a private corridor. An all-season porch allows her to enjoy panoramic views of Milan and ample access to daylight year round. All spaces are intimate, and charming just like her. The apartment brags her collection of hundreds of books, and she can easily access her favorites.

Sculptural Study

Explorations: Form and Site

Body schema is a term used in architecture to refer to the mental representation that an individual has of their own body and its relation to the physical space around them. It is a cognitive construct that allows people to understand and interact with their environment in a meaningful way, by providing a sense of the size, shape, and location of their own body and the objects in their surroundings.

Parallels between skateboarding and ballet come through with the analysis of movement. A large amount of energy is exerted for a few moments of airborne grace. The body meets the ground at small, controlled points, and balance is key. With this location and the presence of ballet and skateboarding, a dialogue is forced about performance, movement, counterculture, class, and art in one space

Sacred Tourism - Basilica Di San Lorenzo Graphite, Inkwash, and Watercolor

Filippo Brunelleschi, the leading Renaissance architect of the first half of the fifteenth century, was commissioned to design Basilica Di San Lorenzo. The building was not completed until after his death. Tourists and architecture students alike will pay over 15 euro to enter the church. The collision of tourism and sacred space has been a point of contention in Italy for years, and the redesigned facade opens the church up to onlookers from the street.

•Democratize the entry by providing visibility into the church •Preserve Brunelleschi’s facade as a textural and historical backdrop. Break it’s edges away, symbolizing a new era for the church with a new light. •Illuminate a monumental marble-clad spire that points to the cosmos. An incredible beam of light projects into the sky, symbolizing the ascension of prayer to the heavens above.

The Ethics and Design Principles of Permaculture, by Author

Overview

Permaculture refers to an approach to land management that adopts techniques found in flourishing ecosystems. It observes it’s design principles from nature. Terms like ‘ecology’, and ‘ecosystem’ only came into our common vocabulary at the end of the 19th century, yet today they seem

completely logical as conceptual ideas. As our awareness expands, how does this shape the design of our lives? Change is not only expected, but change seems to be the nature of nature itself. The clues lie in the work of ecological systems.

Bethel Elementary: A Vessel for Young Life

Ideation is a big part of design at NAC. Much of the schematic design phase was very interactive, with activities that allow the client to express their hopes, wants, and needs in a group setting. Designs are also presented to the entire firm during SCRUM, where everyone provides feedback and uses themed zoom backgrounds made by the in-house graphic design team: Handbuilt Studio.

Work - Life Sanity

What if there was a way to prevent urban sprawl, keep a healthy separation between work and life, and create micro-ecosystems that support biodiversity in an urban environment? In this tower, seven tiered ‘neighborhoods’ sprout from the base of the existing Docusign office building in Seattle, Washington, representing ‘regrowth’ of the building’s vitality. The relationship between

the neighborhoods and the office setting facilitates socialization that allows people to form budding relationships and supportive communities. Within each neighborhood is a bridged structure that connects the residential ‘branch’ to the main office tower creating a unique environment with plentiful amounts of daylight, waterfalls, and green space for residents and workers.

But in the solitude of the tower, She finds a different kind of peace. A wellspring of creativity, That never seems to cease.

For creativity is the fire, That burns within us all. And in the solitude of the tower, We can answer its call.
