THE LAST GAME Tracy James scores two TDs and QB Sema’J Davis is solid in one-possession game at Lamar
A
bilene Christian recovered from a rough beginning to build a 24-17 lead through three quarters, only to see the Lamar Cardinals outscore the Wildcats 10-0 in the final 15 minutes. The visitors had redshirt sophomore Sema’J Davis making his first collegiate start at quarterback, and he combined with Lamar’s Jordan Hoy to star in an entertaining performance by the dual-threat signal callers. Wildcat running back Tracy James scored his FCS-leading 11th and 12th touchdowns of the season and Davis threw the first two scoring passes of his career for Abilene Christian, which surrendered 10 points in less than three minutes during a key stretch of the final quarter. Hoy threw for two touchdowns and scored the game’s decisive TD on a 4-yard run with 6:20 left in the game. “I’m proud of our players,” said head coach Adam Dorrel. “Sema’J played very well in his first collegiate start on the road. The whole team played extremely hard, and with focus and energy. I saw some good things on defense and offense. We didn’t turn over the ball, and on defense we got beat on some double moves but to that you have to tip your cap to their offense.” The Wildcats had earned just one first down and trailed Lamar 10-0 with less than five minutes left in the second quarter when Davis and James ignited the ACU offense, which scored 13 points to rescue what had been a dismal first half. And they added 10 more points to begin the second half. However, scoreless first and fourth quarters bookended the mid-game productivity, and a breakdown on special teams led to the Cardinals’ winning score late in the contest. Abilene Christian forced a turnover on Lamar’s first drive of the third quarter when Brandon Richmond forced a fumble that was recovered by Adonis Davis at the ACU 35-yard line. The Wildcats cashed in the gift when Zepeda kicked his eighth field goal of the season, a 36-yarder with 9:25 left that grew ACU’s lead to 16-10. Lamar bounced back with a 10-play, 75-yard drive to regain the lead, 17-16, on a 31-yard TD pass from Hoy to tight end Mason Sikes at the 4:45 mark. ACU answered with its own 75-yard march on the 2

ensuring drive, to close the third quarter. James scored his second TD of the night on a 5-yard pass from Davis with seven seconds left, then James threw a halfback option pass to leaping tight end Brandon Hohenstein for the two-point conversion, putting the Wildcats up 24-17. The score became tighter at 24-20 when Giffen pulled the Cardinals closer with a 41-yard field goal with 9:30 left, and Lamar got the ball right back when an onside pooch kick on the next play was recovered
by Lamar’s Michael Lawson at the ACU 45-yard line. “I’m disappointed in the onside kick,” said Dorrel. “We worked on that in practice and knew it was coming. We just didn’t execute. We were up four at the time, and a recovery on our part may have led to another score or at least flip the field on them.” Hoy took advantage of ACU’s first and only turnover of the game, running 4 yards for a TD to put his team on top for good, 27-24, with 6:20 remaining.
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more.

SATURDAY’S GAME Houston Baptist and Bailey Zappe bring red-hot offense into Wildcat Stadium
T
he Houston Baptist Huskies are no longer the perennial doormats of the Southland Conference. That’s right. The same program that the Wildcats have defeated five times in six meetings by 57, 45, 28, 21 and 25 points, now lays claim to the No. 1 offense in the Southland Conference. The Huskies first put up 34 points in a seasonopening loss to FBS-member UTEP and then hit the 50-point threshold in back-to-back games with Texas Wesleyan and South Dakota. Their 53-52 shootout win over the Coyotes resulted in two Southland Player of the Week awards for quarterback Bailey Zappe and defensive end Andrew Walker, while senior kickoff returner Gamar Girdy Brito was selected as the STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week. From there, HBU whipped Northwestern State, 48-21 in H-Town, and then the Huskies pummeled Texas Southern thanks to 31 third-quarter points. Two days later, the program made its first appearance in a national poll, tying for 25th in the AFCA Coaches FCS rankings. HBU slipped back into the receiving-votes category this Monday (Oct. 7) after a 38-36 loss to Incarnate Word, last season’s Southland co-champions. Among the many Husky highlights were: •
Zappe completing 49-of-69 passes for 390 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, and setting school records for completions and attempts.
•
Sophomore receiver Jerreth Sterns collecting a school-record 18 receptions for 136 yards and a touchdown, while Gamar Girdy Brito caught seven passes for 53 yards and a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a score.
•
Sophomore linebacker Brennan Young led HBU with 12 tackles, while senior defensive back Malik Johnson made 11 tackles, and forced and recovered a fumble.
• Junior safety Patrick Wolfe registering 11 stops and senior defensive end Andre Walker recording one sack, giving him 9.5 for the season.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
ALLEN WARD
A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.
