THE LAST GAME Wildcats come up a point short of upsetting undefeated, 14th-ranked Central Arkansas
T
racy James added to his FCS-leading touchdown total (seven) and Blair Zepeda kicked a 51-yard field goal, but Carlos Blackman’s 3-yard scoring run with 1:30 remaining held up as the game-winner as No. 14 Central Arkansas edged Abilene Christian 31-30 in both teams’ Southland Conference opener in Estes Stadium. “That’s a really good football team,” said ACU head football coach Adam Dorrel. “We’ve been talking the last five days about how they’ve outscored their opponents in the fourth quarter, and so when it happens to you … it’s disappointing. I thought we stayed aggressive. I don’t feel like we got conservative. They made some plays over the top, and you have to take their hats off to them to do what they’ve done over the last three weeks. That says a lot about their coaching staff, leadership and character. “Even though we lost, I do think there are things that we can take away and gain confidence from knowing that we came this close to beating a top-20 team on the road in school history since going Division I. We’ll get there. I’m proud of our guys. They competed at a really high level tonight.” ACU (1-2, 0-1) and UCA (3-0, 1-0) were engaged in a defensive battle before beginning a fourth-quarter track meet, which the Bears converted into yet another come-from-behind win. Central Arkansas has now scored 57 points in the final frame of its first three games, including 22 in the final 15 minutes against Abilene Christian. The win – UCA’s 20th straight in home openers – appeared in doubt as the ACU offense moved the ball down to the Bears’ 29-yard line on seven plays. Quarterback Luke Anthony mixed plays well to move the Wildcats into scoring position with 35 seconds left, but Zepeda’s 46-yard field goal try fell short and wide right, setting off a celebration by the home team and its fans. Zepeda, however, made three other field goals, including a 51-yarder near the start of the fourth quarter that gave ACU a 20-17 advantage. He is the first Wildcat to make a field goal of 50 or more yards since Nov. 12, 2011, when Morgan Lineberry connected on a 54-yarder at University of the Incarnate Word. “He’s had to come back from a significant injury,” 2
2019 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
said Dorrel, “and he kicked really well in practice all week and kicked well tonight. He’s a young guy, and he’ll learn from it. I’m super proud of him for coming back from that injury, and it’s a testament to his character.” Anthony completed 24 of 41 passes for 322 yards and one score, and James ran for a game-high 88 yards and two TDs to lead the Wildcats offensively. Fink caught four passes for a team-high 98 yards. For the Bears, Breylin Smith completed 36 of 53
passes and Lujuan Winningham caught six for 119. Blackman caught 12 for 82 yards. ACU led Central Arkansas in rushing yards (123 to 51) and had a 445-418 edge in total yards. “We had done a real good job of keeping over top coverage on him ... I thought our corners really competed but that kid’s special,” said Dorrel. “(And) we did a really good job getting pressure on the quarterback (Breylin Smith), but he just stepped up and made the plays.”
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats look to snap winless streak vs. turnover-minded McNeese Cowboys
T
he McNeese Cowboys have been a proverbial thorn in the side of the Wildcats since Abilene Christian’s return to the Southland Conference in 2014. Not only are they undefeated in their all-time series vs. ACU at 6-0, they’ve squeaked out the last two victories by a combined nine points. Last season in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the Wildcats watched a 14-10 halftime lead disappear as the ninth-ranked Cowboys received a 1-yard David Hamm touchdown run followed by a 73-yard punt return from Cyron Sutton that put the home team ahead, 24-14. Quarterback Luke Anthony led the Wildcats on one last scoring drive – capped by Torin Justice’s 5-yard touchdown reception – but the offense was pinned back at its own 1-yard line by punter Alex Kjellsten with 54 seconds left in regulation after the ACU defense forced a three-and-out. The year previous at Wildcat Stadium, Abilene Christian held 22nd-ranked McNeese to only 13 points but the Cowboys’ defense limited the Wildcats to 138 yards total offense in their 13-7 win. McNeese dominated the first half, outgaining ACU 216-39, as the Cowboys held the ball for more than 20 of the 30 minutes in the opening two quarters, but the Wildcats limited their visitors’ scoring to a pair of field goals and a TD. The Cowboys used field goals of 32 and 27 yards by Gunnar Raborn and a 22-yard scoring pass from James Tabary to Darious Crawley to build their early lead and the eventual winning score. ACU actually outgained McNeese 63-59 in the third quarter, and looked to have one last opportunity after knocking down a Tabary pass with 1:11 left in the game. But an unsportsmanlike penalty gave the Cowboys a first down, however, and the visitors ran out the clock. McNeese Notes • McNeese is the only Southland Conference school the Wildcats have not defeated in their team history. The Cowboys are 6-0 vs. ACU in a series that dates back to 1972. McNeese is 2-0 against the Wildcats in Abilene, winning 15-13 in 2015 and 13-7 in 2017.

2019 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
• McNeese (2-1) held on Sept. 14 to beat Alcorn State at home Sept. 14, 17-14. The Braves scored all their points in the fourth quarter, and shut out the Cowboys in the second half on 78 net yards (eight second-half drives).
• Darion Dunn’s two interceptions marked the first time a Cowboy picked off two passes since Oct. 27, 2018 (Cory McCoy at UIW).
• With 12 tackles, Jovon Burriss tied a career-high while recording his third career double-digit tackle game.
• Carlos Scott added 10 tackles for his first career double-digit tackle game.
• McNeese forced three turnovers to give it 10 on the season – eight fumbles and two interceptions, both marks that lead the FCS.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
ALLEN WARD
A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel was hired Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head football coach in Abilene Christian University program history, but the first to lead a team with an opportunity to reach the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs. On Sept. 16, 2017, he became the first ACU head coach since World War II to lead its football team in a permanent on-campus stadium when the Wildcats beat Houston Baptist in the inaugural game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. And on Nov. 10, 2018, he became the first ACU head coach in program history to lead a Wildcat football team to a winning season at the NCAA Division I level when ACU beat Sam Houston State, 17-10, in Huntsville to push ACU to 6-4 on its way to a 6-5 final record. The Wildcats finished the 2018 season with the first winning season at the NCAA Division I level in program history, the most wins in the Southland
Conference at the Division I level (5-4 record), the first win over a top-15 team at the Division I level (28-12 over then-No. 11 Nicholls on Oct. 13), the program’s first win over Sam Houston State since 1983, and a 48-27 demolition of Southeastern Louisiana. In eight-plus seasons as a head coach, Dorrel has compiled a 84-23 record, an 78.5 winning percentage that ranks in the top 10 among active college coaches. Dorrel led the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to the Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and led them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at his alma mater. He graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and earned his Masters of Science degree (health and physical education) in 2000. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
