THE LAST GAME McCrary’s 222-yard effort leads Wildcats to 48-27 win over Lions, back to .500 record
A
CU running back Billy McCrary ran for a career-high 222 yards and one touchdown and quarterback Luke Anthony threw three scoring passes Saturday night (Oct. 27) as the Wildcats went on the road and pounded Southeastern Louisiana, 48-27, in Southland Conference action at Strawberry Stadium. The Wildcats’ second straight victory pushes them to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the league, while the Lions fall to 3-5 and 3-3. ACU never trailed, leading 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, 20-10 at halftime and 27-17 at the end of the third. McCrary ran for those 222 yards on just 14 carries, repeatedly gashing the Lions’ defense for huge gains. He had an 11-yard run in the first quarter and only got better as the game continued, picking up a 25-yard gain in the second, gains of 20 and 21 yards in the third and finally putting the Lions away with runs of 51 and 47 yards in the fourth. His touchdown run came on a 51-yard jaunt through the middle of the Southeastern defense, giving the Wildcats a 41-20 lead with 10:24 left in the contest. But it wasn’t just McCrary who pounded the Lions; his backfield mate, Tracy James, ran for 88 yards and two scores on 18 bruising carries as the Wildcats completely dominated the line of scrimmage. James had carries of 12 yards in the first quarter, 15 and 18 yards in the second, 15 yards in the third and 10 yards in the fourth. He scored |a pair of touchdowns, bursting in from 15 yards out early in the second quarter to give ACU a 10-0 lead, and then from 2 yards away to make it 34-17 with 14:11 left in the game. Last year it was Southeastern that embarrassed the Wildcats on Homecoming at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, outscoring them 35-8 to turn a close game into a 56-21 rout. The Lions ran for 443 yards and had 623 total yards while limiting the Wildcats to just 293 total yards, including 119 through the air. But the Wildcats completely turned the tables on the Lions Saturday night, rushing for 317 yards to just 126 for Southeastern and putting up a season-high 612 yards of total offense.

2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
Anthony was extremely efficient, completing 29 of 37 passes (18 of 22 in the first half) for 295 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to Torin Justice, who had six catches for 69 yards. Senior tight end Cody Ennis contributed five catches for 59 yards. Kalin Sadler – who had a 65-yard scoring catch last week against Nicholls – had a 34-yard TD catch in the second quarter to give the Wildcats a 17-7 lead. QUOTABLE “We weren’t perfect, but when you play with passion and energy, you can do great things.” – ACU head coach Adam Dorrel
“I really can’t believe the strides we’ve made in our running game. To be able to go out and run for more than 300 yards against a team that pushed us around last year shows just how much we’ve grown.” – Dorrel on his team’s running game, which racked up 317 yards against the Lions UP NEXT The Wildcats travel to Huntsville next Saturday to take on Sam Houston State at 2:30 p.m. in Elliot T. Bowers Stadium.
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more. This includes reserved season tickets and season parking for football.

SATURDAY’S GAME ACU hosts Northwestern State as Wildcats look to get back above .500 mark on season
T
he ACU Wildcats are back in action at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium this Saturday as they host Northwestern State in a Southland Conference contest at 2 p.m. The Wildcats march into the game against the Demons with a 4-4 overall mark and 3-3 record in the Southland after back-to-back wins over 11th-ranked Nicholls (28-12 on Oct. 13) and a huge road win over Southeastern Louisiana (48-27 on Oct. 20). ACU was open last week, allowing some players who have missed some time to get healed and, possibly, be ready to go Saturday against Northwestern State. A win Saturday against the Demons would push the Wildcats above .500 (5-4) overall this late in the season for the first time since 2013 when ACU was 5-4 after a 34-29 loss at New Mexico State on Oct. 26 in Las Cruces. Entering their final three games of the regular season, the Wildcats have a chance at several firsts in its era as an NCAA Division I program: • First winning season (ACU would need to win two of its final three to finish at least 6-5); • First season with seven wins (ACU would need to win each of its final three to finish 7-4); • An outside shot at the league championship and the league’s automatic berth into the FCS playoffs. ACU would need to win out to finish 6-3, while Incarnate Word would have to lose each of its final two league games to finish 4-4, and ACU would have to get some other help from teams above it in terms of losses by McNeese, Nicholls, Sam Houston State, Central Arkansas and surprising Lamar, which is tied with ACU at 3-3 in the league.
If ACU wins out, it could finish tied for the top spot with Nicholls or Sam Houston State, but ACU already has a win over Nicholls in hand and would have a win over the Bearkats in the bag if it wins out, and that would give ACU a co-championship and the league’s automatic bid into the FCS playoffs. But those scenarios are too complicated to contemplate with three games left to play, including one Saturday against the league’s top passing offense and one of its best wide receivers. The Demons march into Abilene with an offense that averages 318.6 yards per game through the air, the best 4

figure in the league by eight yards over Incarnate Word (310.2). Kaleb Fletcher will get the start at quarterback for the Demons, who are the only program at the NCAA Division I level to have four quarterbacks throw a touchdown pass this season. Fletcher has completed 63 percent of his passes in two games this season, throwing for 440 yards and four touchdowns. LSU transfer wide receiver Jazz Ferguson is among the best in the league at his position, having caught 48 passes for 852 yards and eight TDs through eight games in 2018. The defense ranks 11th in the league, giving up an average of 493.5 yards. ACU is second in total offense (469.1 yards per game) and fourth in scoring offense (32.2 points per game), while the defense is fourth in total defense (allowing 394.1), scoring defense (27.9) and sacks (24).
Junior linebacker Jeremiah Chambers paces the defense and is third in the league in total tackles (83) and tackles per game (10.4). Junior running back Billy McCrary – who ran for 222 yards two weeks ago in the win over Southeastern Louisiana – is second in the league in rushing yards (691) and yards per game (86.4) and needs 309 yards in the Wildcats’ final three regular season games to become the first Wildcat to rush for at least 1,000 in a season at the NCAA Division I level, and the first to crack the 1,000-yard barrier since Bernard Scott ran for 2,156 yards in 2008. Sophomore quarterback Luke Anthony is third in the league in passing yards (2,294) and yards per game (286.8), but is second in touchdown passes (18) behind the 21 by Houston Baptist’s Bailey Zappe.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
ALLEN WARD
A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel is in his second season after being named the 20th head football coach in ACU history in December 2016. Dorrel’s Wildcats were 2-9 overall and 2-7 in the Southland Conference last season. ACU’s signature victory was a 24-3 win over Houston Baptist on Sept. 16 in the first game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus home stadium since World War II. At the end of September, the Wildcats went to Incarnate Word to take on the Cardinals and came away with a 45-20 victory, snapping the Wildcats’ 14-game road losing streak that dated back to the start of the 2015 season. Prior to that win over UIW, ACU’s last road win was a 37-35 win over Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches on Nov. 15, 2014. In his first season at ACU, Dorrel saw some tremendous off-field strides, especially in the areas of
academics and community service. The ACU football program saw its overall GPA improve from 2.71 in 2016-17 to 2.95 in 2017-18 after posting semester GPAs of 2.95 (fall) and 2.96 (spring). The Wildcats also have become active partners in the community with an annual spring cleanup day around Abilene and several other projects. Dorrel’s players put in more than 500 hours of community service in 2017-18. Dorrel came to ACU after six seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II power Northwest Missouri State University. He was introduced as the ACU head coach two days after the 2016 national championship game. Dorrel’s team won its second straight national title and third under his leadership with a 29-3 win in 2016 over North Alabama. A native of Maryville, Missouri, he and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam. 2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
