THE LAST GAME Wildcats knock off Bearkats to clinch first winning season since 2013, stay in playoff hunt
T
racy James ran for 111 yards and one score last Saturday afternoon and the ACU defense came up with one big stop after another as the Wildcats knocked off Sam Houston State, 17-10, at Bowers Stadium, Abilene Christian’s first win over the Bearkats since 1983. The Wildcats’ fourth straight win guarantees their first winning season since 2013 and pushes them to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the Southland Conference. Sam Houston State – which had reached the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs seven straight seasons – will not go to the playoffs in 2018 as the Bearkats are now 5-5 and 4-4. ACU led 7-3 at halftime, trailed 10-7 midway through the third quarter and then regained a 14-10 lead with 5:29 left in the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Luke Anthony to Cody Ennis. Oscar Hernandez tacked on the final points of the game with a 41-yard field goal with 12:13 left in the game to give the Wildcats a 17-10 lead. Armed with the lead, the Wildcats turned the game over to their running game and defense. For the second straight season James ran for more than 100 yards against the Bearkats (142 last season) and backup quarterback Sema’J Davis played a huge role as he ran the ball nine times for 81 yards. The Wildcats had four different ball carriers as they tried to make up for the absence of leading rusher Billy McCrary, who suffered an injury last week against Northwestern State. Aside from James – who had 54 yards on 12 bruising second-half carries to go along with all five of his receptions for 37 yards – Davis had 81 yards, Tyrese White had 16 yards on five carries and Anthony had 18 positive rushing yards, finishing with minus-7 total rushing yards when accounting for the three times he was sacked. In all, the Wildcats ran the ball 48 times for 189 yards against the Bearkats’ defense, which went a long way toward putting up the 28 first downs and 34 minutes, 46 seconds of possession time they accrued. ACU also converted six of 18 third-down plays against the Bearkats, who entered the game giving up just 26 percent on third down this season. The Wildcats gave up 375 yards of offense to the Bearkats, but 142 of those came on two passes, one 2
2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
for 88 on a pass from Ty Brock to Nathan Stewart and another on a 54-yard pass from Brock to Dewaylon Ingram. Outside of those two plays, the Bearkats had just 233 yards on 63 plays and put up just 13 first downs. ACU came up with multiple huge third down and fourth down stops in the second half, including twice turning the Bearkats away on fourth down in the red zone. Sophomore linebacker Jack Gibbens sealed the game with an interception at the Sam Houston State 31 with 2:15 left in the game. ACU was able to run out the clock on the game and the victory, its first over the Bearkats since Nov. 5, 1983, when both were members
of the Lone Star Conference. ACU had lost five straight games to Sam Houston State, including all four meetings since the Wildcats re-joined the Southland in 2014. QUOTABLE “Really proud of our defense for the way they played. They made stop after stop and really stood up when it counted. Proud of our entire team for believing and believing in each other.” – ACU head coach Adam Dorrel
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more. This includes reserved season tickets and season parking for football.

SATURDAY’S GAME ACU closes out regular season against Central Arkansas with FCS playoff berth still in play
T
he ACU Wildcats close out the regular season today with a game against Central Arkansas, and they’ve still got plenty to play for against the Bears. While the Wildcats don’t have an opportunity to win a share of the Southland Conference title, a win over the Bears would give them a fifth straight win to the end the season, a 7-4 record and a strong resume to present to the NCAA Division I FCS playoff selection committee that will be meeting Saturday in Indianapolis to determine the playoff field, which will be announced Sunday. The Wildcats last reached the playoffs in 2011, their next-to-last season at the NCAA Division II level, and the final of six straight trips to the Division II postseason. ACU’s head coach, Adam Dorrel, is no stranger to the postseason, having won three NCAA Division II national titles while the head coach at powerhouse Northwest Missouri State, taking the Bearkats to the playoffs in each of his six seasons at the helm of the team for which he also won a national championship as a player in 1998 and two more as an assistant coach in 1999 and 2009. Incarnate Word capped its improbable season last Saturday in Conway, Arkansas, with a 40-27 win over Central Arkansas, a victory that gave the Cardinals no worse than a share of the league championship, a stunning turnaround for a team that last year was 1-10 overall (1-7 in the league) and picked last (11th) in the league’s annual preseason poll. The Cardinals are off Saturday, but can win the outright championship and the league’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs Thursday night if Nicholls loses at home to Southeastern Louisiana. That would leave UIW and McNeese – which plays red-hot Lamar on Saturday – as the only two-loss teams in the league. UIW, however, would win the title outright and the bid to the playoffs by virtue of its 45-17 win over the Cowboys on Oct. 20. However, if Nicholls beats Southeastern, the Colonels will win a share of the title, but will earn the league’s automatic bid based on its 48-21 win over Incarnate Word on Oct. 27. That would leave UIW and possibly ACU and either McNeese or Lamar – based on the winner of that game – as teams still hoping for an at-large bid to the playoffs. 4
2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
First things first for the Wildcats, however, and that means dealing with a Central Arkansas team team that, while out of the playoff chase at 5-5 overall and 4-4 in the league, is the defending league champion. The Wildcats are 7-1-1 all-time against the Bears and are 1-3 against UCA since 2014 when they re-joined the Southland. After ACU won the 2014 game, 52-35, the Bears have won three straight, all in dominating fashion: 42-14 in 2015, 58-27 in 2016 and 34-0 in the 2017 season finale. The Wildcats enter the game with two of the league’s top four rushers in Billy McCrary (second in yards per game at 79.9 and fourth in total yards with 718) and Tracy James (third in total yards at 746 and fourth in yards per game at 74.6), the fourth-ranked quarterback in the league in yards per game in Luke Anthony (279.4), who also ranks third in the league in touchdown passes with 23.
ACU’s offense is third in total offense (460.1 yards per game), third in scoring offense (32.4 points per game), third in rushing offense (174.4 yards per game) and fifth in passing offense (283.7). The Wildcat offensive line has been solid all season as ACU leads the league in fewest sacks allowed (13) for a meager 85 yards in losses. The Wildcat defense is third in the league in total defense (allowing 394.9 yards per game), tied with UCA in scoring defense (allowing 28 points per game), third in rushing defense (115) and seventh in passing defense (279.9). ACU’s defense is third with 32 sacks. The Bears enter the game with the sixth-ranked running back (Carlos Blackman at 70.1 yard per game) and the league’s eighth-ranked receiver (Jakari Dillard at 70.2. UCA has used four quarterbacks this season after its top two were injured in the same game earlier this year.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
ALLEN WARD
A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel is in his second season after being named the 20th head football coach in ACU history in December 2016. Dorrel’s Wildcats were 2-9 overall and 2-7 in the Southland Conference last season. ACU’s signature victory was a 24-3 win over Houston Baptist on Sept. 16 in the first game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus home stadium since World War II. At the end of September, the Wildcats went to Incarnate Word to take on the Cardinals and came away with a 45-20 victory, snapping the Wildcats’ 14-game road losing streak that dated back to the start of the 2015 season. Prior to that win over UIW, ACU’s last road win was a 37-35 win over Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches on Nov. 15, 2014. In his first season at ACU, Dorrel saw some tremendous off-field strides, especially in the areas of
academics and community service. The ACU football program saw its overall GPA improve from 2.71 in 2016-17 to 2.95 in 2017-18 after posting semester GPAs of 2.95 (fall) and 2.96 (spring). The Wildcats also have become active partners in the community with an annual spring cleanup day around Abilene and several other projects. Dorrel’s players put in more than 500 hours of community service in 2017-18. Dorrel came to ACU after six seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II power Northwest Missouri State University. He was introduced as the ACU head coach two days after the 2016 national championship game. Dorrel’s team won its second straight national title and third under his leadership with a 29-3 win in 2016 over North Alabama. A native of Maryville, Missouri, he and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam. 2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
