THE LAST GAME Career nights for Davis and Fink lead to convincing 45-20 victory over Houston Baptist

T

racy James and Sema’J Davis combined for 266 rushing yards and Luke Anthony threw three touchdown passes to lead Abilene Christian University to a 45-20 domination of Houston Baptist University on Saturday night in Wildcat Stadium. ACU throttled the nation’s leading offense all night while moving to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Southland Conference. HBU (4-3 and 1-2) – which entered the game tops in the FCS in total, scoring and passing offense, and with the nation’s top passer – watched the Wildcats roll up 583 yards of balanced offense (280 yards passing, 303 rushing) and play stingy, opportunistic defense and special teams all night. The Huskies, averaging 567 yards of offense a game, were held by ACU to 320 yards, 112 in the first half, in losing for a second straight week. Anthony completed 30 of 43 passes for 280 yards, Davis – a backup quarterback – ran for 148 yards and James added 118 and his FCS-leading 13th TD of the season. Josh Fink caught 12 passes for 112 yards and Kobe Clark grabbed nine for 107 yards, and scored once each. Head coach Adam Dorrel’s team had its foot on the accelerator from the get-go. The Wildcats sacked HBU quarterback Bailey Zappe on third down to abruptly end his team’s opening drive, then jumped to a 14-0 lead. The offensive mini-explosion represented ACU’s first opening-quarter points in a game since a narrow loss to Central Arkansas on Sept. 14 – and it only took five plays to get things started. Anthony tossed a 12-yard scoring pass to Josh Fink on the Wildcats’ first drive, and then on the next one, Tracy James ran 30 yards untouched for another touchdown. The latter was set up by a 41-yard pass from Anthony to Kobe Clark on second down, and James went the distance on just the third play of the lightning-fast – 25 seconds – 71-yard drive. ACU appeared to be on its way to another score on its subsequent drive but a short pass to Fink was stopped on 4th-and-2 at the HBU 2-yard line. But on its next trip downfield, the Wildcats found success from the HBU 2 when Clark took a shovel pass from Anthony and found his way into the end zone for his second TD of the season with 26 seconds left. 2

2019 WILDCAT FOOTBALL

The evening’s back-breaking play took place on the Wildcats’ first play from scrimmage in the second half. That’s when Sema’J Davis ran 75 yards for a TD – the second longest scoring run by a quarterback in ACU history since Elbert Anderson’s 88-yarder in 1932 – to put ACU up 28-6. Zepeda kicked a 26-yard field goal to grow the lead to 31-6. HBU finally found the end zone with 6:35 left in the third quarter when Zappe tossed a 1-yard scoring pass to Jerreth Stearns, cutting the ACU lead to 31-13.

But on the ensuing kickoff, the Huskies attempted an onside boot that was picked up by safety Gage Graham and returned 42 yards for a Wildcat TD, growing ACU’s advantage to 38-13. The Huskies’ Ean Beek ran 16 yards for a TD on the next drive, making the new score 38-20. ACU countered with Anthony’s third scoring pass of the night, a 10-yarder to Lionel McConnell, putting the Wildcats ahead for good, 45-20, with 13:26 remaining in the game.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats look to halt series losing streak vs. Lumberjacks with Homecoming win

T

he Wildcats played their best all-around game of the season last Saturday vs. Houston Baptist and will need to produce an equal performance to: 1) stay undefeated a home, 2) snap a three-game losing skid to Stephen F. Austin and 3) continue their climb up the Southland Conference standings and back into the FCS postseason picture. The Lumberjacks are off to an uncharacteristic 1-5 start under first-year head coach Colby Carthel, who began his collegiate coaching career in 2000 as the Wildcats’ recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach. He later coached against ACU as the West Texas A&M defensive coordinator from 2006-13 before taking head coaching jobs at Texas A&M-Commerce (2013-18) and SFA. The Lumberjacks started 2019 with four tough losses against Baylor, Tarleton State, Southern Utah (in OT) and Southland favorite Nicholls before rallying to beat Lamar, 24-17, in Beaumont. The following week SFA dropped a 31-20 decision to archrival Sam Houston State in the 94th Battle of the Piney Woods. The Bearkats have won their last eight meetings with the Lumberjacks. Upon entering the Southland Conference in 2014, Abilene Christian won its first two games vs. SFA in nailbiting fashion. Nik Grau booted a 31-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter of a 37-35 win at SFA in 2014. The Lumberjacks had a chance to retake the lead with 1:19 to go, but Jordan Wiggs’ 27-yard attempt sailed wide left. ACU then ran all but two seconds off the clock and punter Austin Kilcullen pinned the home team back at its own 8-yard line. The following year at Shotwell Stadium, De’Andre Brown scored the go-ahead touchdown from 20 yards out with 5:51 remaining. The Wildcat defense then forced a punt and a turnover on downs on SFA’s final two possessions. Since then the Lumberjacks have won three consecutive close games, including last year’s 24-21 triumph in Nacogdoches. ACU twice trailed by as many as 10 points, but closed to within a field goal following a Luke Anthony pass to Josh Fink. Unfortunately, SFA recovered the onside kick and kneeled out the clock.

2019 WILDCAT FOOTBALL

Stephen F. Austin Notes •

ACU leads the all-time series 10-9 but is in the midst of a three-game series losing streak. The Wildcats have won six of eight meetings vs. the Lumberjacks in Abilene, but lost the 2017 game at Anthony Field, 20-10. SFA won on its home field last year, 24-21.

• ACU’s all-time record on Homecoming is 54-35-1. The Wildcats are 4-2 on this date since moving up to NCAA Division I and the Southland

Conference in 2013. ACU and SFA met on Homecoming three times in five years between 1979 and 1983. The Wildcats won 31-0 and 24-10 in 1981 and 1983 but lost 27-21 during their 1979 meeting. • SFA ranks 14th in the FCS with a .920 Red Zone offense thanks to kicker Storm Ruiz, who is top-20 in the FCS with a .875 field goal percentage, 2.33 FGs per game and 9.5 points per game.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

ALLEN WARD

A

llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates

now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.

HEAD COACH

ADAM DORREL

A

T dam Dorrel was hired Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head football coach in Abilene Christian University program history, but the first to lead a team with an opportunity to reach the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs. On Sept. 16, 2017, he became the first ACU head coach since World War II to lead its football team in a permanent on-campus stadium when the Wildcats beat Houston Baptist in the inaugural game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. And on Nov. 10, 2018, he became the first ACU head coach in program history to lead a Wildcat football team to a winning season at the NCAA Division I level when ACU beat Sam Houston State, 17-10, in Huntsville to push ACU to 6-4 on its way to a 6-5 final record. The Wildcats finished the 2018 season with the first winning season at the NCAA Division I level in program history, the most wins in the Southland

Conference at the Division I level (5-4 record), the first win over a top-15 team at the Division I level (28-12 over then-No. 11 Nicholls on Oct. 13), the program’s first win over Sam Houston State since 1983, and a 48-27 demolition of Southeastern Louisiana. In eight-plus seasons as a head coach, Dorrel has compiled a 84-23 record, an 78.5 winning percentage that ranks in the top 10 among active college coaches. Dorrel led the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to the Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and led them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at his alma mater. He graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and earned his Masters of Science degree (health and physical education) in 2000. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
