THE LAST GAME Wildcats take Next Step with 37-31 overtime win at No. 15 Nicholls
T
racy James and Sema’J Davis ran for two touchdowns each and Abilene Christian University upset No. 15 Nicholls 37-31 in overtime to spoil the Colonels’ Homecoming. The Wildcats (5-4, 4-3) won their third straight game and first on the road this season, knocking off the defending league champs and preserving its own playoff hopes. James ran for a TD on the final play of the first half and the game. James ran 5 yards for the deciding score after Nicholls had rallied from a pair of 10-point second-half deficits to tie the score at 31 with 19 seconds left. He was not his team’s leading rusher, however. That honor went to Davis, the dynamic sophomore Wildcat signal-caller who ran 19 times for 146 yards and two scores while sharing time at quarterback Saturday afternoon with junior Luke Anthony. Davis eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the second time this season in pacing a Wildcat attack that rolled up 282 yards on the ground and 472 overall. Nicholls forged a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a 2-yard TD run by Julien Gums with 5:57 left. ACU’s Blair Zepeda cut the lead to 7-3 with a 22-yard field goal, and Gums found the end zone again on a 22-yard run to give the home team’s Homecoming crowd a 14-3 lead and apparent head of steam on what looked like it might be a long afternoon for the Wildcats. ACU proved resilient, however, scoring 21 unanswered points to take leads of 24-14 and 31-21 in an impressive third quarter. Along the way, ACU’s dual-threat Davis overmatched the vaunted Colonel defense, which entered the game allowing just 85 yards on the ground to opponents. After forcing a Nicholls punt late in the third quarter, Anthony was intercepted for the second time when Chase Brown stepped in front of a pass intended for Davis and returned it 18 yards to the ACU 39-yard line. Five plays later, Chase Fourcade converted the turnover into points when he ran 1 yard for a TD with 12:09 left in the game, drawing the Colonels closer at 31-28. ACU’s season-long propensity for forcing turnovers – Brandon Richmond’s tackle of Julien Gums did the deed on the ensuing drive – resurfaced for the second time in the game, with Cole Burgess recovering to give 2
2019 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
ACU the ball on the Wildcat 40-yard line with 9:35 left. The Wildcats could not convert on the turnover, however, and punted back to the Colonels with 5:30 remaining. A sack of Fourcade by ACU defensive tackle Temisan Kuyatsemi did not deter the Southland’s reigning Player of the Year. Fourcade bounced back with a clutch 36-yard pass to Dion Ray that gave Nicholls the ball at the ACU 15-yard line. Four plays later, Wildcat safety Bolu Onifade stopped a Foucade run on 3rd-and-2, forcing Gunnar
Jones to kick his 19-yard game-tying field goal. On the second play of Nicholls’ first OT possession, ACU’s Richmond recovered a fumble to put the Wildcats on offense and another late victory in sight ACU won the game on its first possession when James ran for the deciding TD on the Wildcats’ fifth play.
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats can keep FCS playoff hopes alive with a home victory over Bearkats
T
he Wildcats and Sam Houston State Bearkats enter Saturday’s game at Anthony Field well rested, as both received an indentical open date on Nov. 2. For Abilene Christian, its bye week followed consecutive overtime wins over Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls, while the Bearkats went 2-2 in October, alternating wins and losses against SFA, Lamar and nationally ranked Nicholls (No. 9) and Central Arkansas (No. 12). A week after being stunned at home in triple overtime by the Cardinals, 20-17, the Bearkats responded with a thoroughly domininant 17-0 triumph over the Colonels on their Homecoming. Sam Houston State then went to Conway, where it was handed a 29-25 defeat by the first-place Central Arkansas Bears. UCA scored all its points in the second half, rallying from a 16-point deficit. SHSU’s defeat dropped them into a three-way tie for second place at 4-2 – one game behind the 5-1 Bears – with Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana, which visits Abilene on Nov. 16 in the Wildcats’ regular-season home finale. ACU’s rivalry with the Bearkats is one of the oldest on the books. The first meeting took place in 1926, but it wasn’t until the early 1970s when the Wildcats experienced their first taste of sustained success against their southeastern rivals. From 1973-84, ACU won 10 of 12 meetings leading into a 30-year series hiatus. But after the Wildcats joined the FCS ranks of the Southland Conference in 2014, the Bearkats won the first four meetings by an average score of 44-24. The Wildcats, however, flipped the script last November in Huntsville, holding the Bearkats to 10 points for the first time since 1984. The Wildcats gave up 375 yards of offense to the Bearkats, but 142 of those came on two passes, one for 88 on a pass from Ty Brock to Nathan Stewart and another a 54-yard pass from Brock to Dewaylon Ingram. Outside of those two plays, the Bearkats had just 233 yards on 63 plays and put up just 13 first downs. ACU came up with multiple huge third down and fourth down stops in the second half, including twice turning the Bearkats away on fourth down in the red zone. Sophomore linebacker Jack Gibbens sealed the game 4
2019 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
with an interception at the Sam Houston State 31 with 2:15 left in the game. ACU led 7-3 at halftime, trailed 10-7 midway through the third quarter and then regained a 14-10 lead with 5:29 left in the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Luke Anthony to Cody Ennis. Oscar Hernandez tacked on the final points of the game with a 41-yard field goal with 12:13 left in the game to give the Wildcats a 17-10 lead. Armed with the lead, the Wildcats turned the game over to their running game and defense. For the second
straight season, Tracy James ran for more than 100 yards against the Bearkats (142 in 2017) and backup quarterback Sema’J Davis played a huge role as he ran the ball nine times for 81 yards. In all, the Wildcats ran the ball 48 times for 189 yards against the Bearkat defense, which went a long way toward putting up the 28 first downs and 34 minutes, 46 seconds of possession time they accrued.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
ALLEN WARD
A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel was hired Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head football coach in Abilene Christian University program history, but the first to lead a team with an opportunity to reach the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs. On Sept. 16, 2017, he became the first ACU head coach since World War II to lead its football team in a permanent on-campus stadium when the Wildcats beat Houston Baptist in the inaugural game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. And on Nov. 10, 2018, he became the first ACU head coach in program history to lead a Wildcat football team to a winning season at the NCAA Division I level when ACU beat Sam Houston State, 17-10, in Huntsville to push ACU to 6-4 on its way to a 6-5 final record. The Wildcats finished the 2018 season with the first winning season at the NCAA Division I level in program history, the most wins in the Southland
Conference at the Division I level (5-4 record), the first win over a top-15 team at the Division I level (28-12 over then-No. 11 Nicholls on Oct. 13), the program’s first win over Sam Houston State since 1983, and a 48-27 demolition of Southeastern Louisiana. In eight-plus seasons as a head coach, Dorrel has compiled a 84-23 record, an 78.5 winning percentage that ranks in the top 10 among active college coaches. Dorrel led the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to the Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and led them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at his alma mater. He graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and earned his Masters of Science degree (health and physical education) in 2000. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
