THE LAST GAME RB James extends touchdown streak in home loss to Sam Houston State
E
ric Schmid survived eight sacks to throw for 260 yards and Ife Adeyi scored two touchdowns to lead Sam Houston State to a 24-10 come-from-behind win over ACU. Capitalizing on three turnovers, the Bearkats rallied from a 10-0 second-quarter deficit to score 24 unanswered points in snapping a three-game winning streak for the Wildcats (5-5 overall and 4-4 in the league). The win steadied SHSU’s ship (6-4, 5-2) after the visitors had lost two of their previous three. Schmid completed 16 of 33 passes and threw one touchdown pass for Sam Houston State, and wide receiver Adeyi caught scoring passes of 36 and 57 yards. ACU’s Tracy James scored his 19th TD of the season, the second-best mark in the nation (FCS). Abilene Christian held SHSU to just 71 yards on the ground and chased Schmid all over the field, but the Bearkats limited ACU to only 83 second-half yards of offense and 279 overall, far below their per-game average of 457.2. SHSU managed just 365 yards of offense, 20 yards below what ACU averages allowing per game. ACU began two of its first four drives under the north end zone shadow of Wessel Scoreboard after punts by Aussie freshman Matt McRobert pinned the Wildcats at their 3- and 2-yard lines, respectively. Blair Zepeda booted his 12th field goal of the season, a 24-yarder to put the Wildcats on top, 3-0. ACU had been gifted excellent field position when it bottled up the Bearkats deep in their own territory and forced them punt on their opening drive. The Wildcats increased their lead to 10-0 when James ran 14 tough yards with a screen pass from Luke Anthony with 53 seconds left in the first quarter. For the junior signal caller, this was his 50th career touchdown pass. Abilene Christian looked sharp on both sides of the ball. The opening quarter was one of offensive futility for the Bearkats, who were held to zero yards rushing and 25 overall by the Wildcat defense. The frame ended with a sack of Schmid by defensive tackle Temisan Kuyatsemi, ACU’s fourth of the game’s early action. But in far less time than the 18 minutes it took Sam Houston State’s namesake to lead his army to a win at 2
2019 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836, the Bearkats flipped ACU’s tables and ensured themselves of a victory. They stormed into a 14-10 lead before half and extended it to 17-10 early in the third quarter – all benefit of Wildcat turnovers – and added another TD to make it 24-10. SHSU racheted up its defensive pressure the rest of the game. SHSU shook its offensive woes with a five-play, 90-yard scoring drive and a one-play, 57-yard drive just before halftime. On the first touchdown, Noah Smith
connected with fellow wide receiver Ife Adeyi on a 36-yard pass at the 5:06 mark and on the second, Adeyi hauled in a 57-yard pass from Schmid with 3:47 left. Sam Houston State extended its lead to 24-10 when Donovan Williams ran 3 yards for a touchdown with 8:45 left in the quarter. Williams led the Bearkats in rushing with nine carries for 34 yards and one score.
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more.

SATURDAY’S GAME High-scoring affairs part of recent series history between Wildcats and Lions
T
he Southeastern Louisiana Lions employ a two-quarterback system much like the Wildcats, and in recent weeks their offense exploited opposing defenses from Houston Baptist, Stephen F. Austin and No. 6 Central Arkansas by posting respective point totals of 52, 47 and 34. These eye-popping performances have propelled SLU back into the STATS and AFCA FCS Top 25 polls and into a four-way tie for first place in the Southland Conference at 5-2 along with UCA, Sam Houston State and Nicholls. ACU’s loss to the Bearkats last Saturday dropped them to 4-4. The Wildcats will need a win on Senior Day to clinch their second-consecutive winning season in the Southland, but it won’t be easy against these Lions. Southeastern ranks among the national FCS leaders in total offense (480 ypg, 5th), scoring offense (37.9 ppg, 9th) and passing offense (333.9 ypg, 4th). It’s also worth knowing the Lion quarterback tandem of Cole Kelley (50-for-62, 649 yards, 9 TD) and Chason Virgil (195-for-292, 15 TD) have combined for the nation’s best completion percentage (69.2). SLU’s defense, meanwhile, is allowing 24.8 points and 392.7 yards per game, and enters its regular season road finale ranked near the top of FCS in sacks (29, 5th) and tackles for loss (79, 6th). ACU’s 48-27 victory last season over the Lions in Hammond evened the all-time series at 3-3, and snapped a two-game series losing streak. It also featured 1,062 yards of total offense – 612 of it courtesy of the Wildcats, who dropped their two previous meetings vs. SLU by scores of 31-19 and 56-21. Luke Anthony threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns on 29 of 37 passing, while the duo of Billy McCrary (14 carries, 222 yards, one touchdown) and Tracy James (18-88-2 TD) led a ACU ground attack that finished with 317 yards. Southeastern Louisiana Notes • Junior quarterback Cole Kelley and sophomore defensive back Ferlando Jordan were among the Southland Conference Football Players of the Week for their role in the team’s 34-0 win at Central Arkansas. 4
2019 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
• Kelley tied a single-game school record with four rushing touchdowns, while also completing 20 of 24 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown. • Jordan intercepted two passes and broke up four others in the shutout win over the Bears. Jordan’s efforts were part of a defensive effort that saw SLU post its first shutout since 2009, as well as hand UCA its first shutout loss since 1995 and its first home shutout loss since 1986.
• Quarterback Chason Virgil was one of 34 student-athletes named to the College Football Performance Awards midseason watch list for National Performer of the Year, released earlier this month by the CFPA. • Virgil has helped the Lions rank near the top of the nation in total offense (480.0 yards per game, 5th), scoring offense (37.9 ppg, 9th), passing offense (333.9 ypg, 4th), completion percentage (69.2, 1st) and red zone offense (91.9 percent, 7th).

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
ALLEN WARD
A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel was hired Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head football coach in Abilene Christian University program history, but the first to lead a team with an opportunity to reach the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs. On Sept. 16, 2017, he became the first ACU head coach since World War II to lead its football team in a permanent on-campus stadium when the Wildcats beat Houston Baptist in the inaugural game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. And on Nov. 10, 2018, he became the first ACU head coach in program history to lead a Wildcat football team to a winning season at the NCAA Division I level when ACU beat Sam Houston State, 17-10, in Huntsville to push ACU to 6-4 on its way to a 6-5 final record. The Wildcats finished the 2018 season with the first winning season at the NCAA Division I level in program history, the most wins in the Southland
Conference at the Division I level (5-4 record), the first win over a top-15 team at the Division I level (28-12 over then-No. 11 Nicholls on Oct. 13), the program’s first win over Sam Houston State since 1983, and a 48-27 demolition of Southeastern Louisiana. In eight-plus seasons as a head coach, Dorrel has compiled a 84-23 record, an 78.5 winning percentage that ranks in the top 10 among active college coaches. Dorrel led the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to the Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and led them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at his alma mater. He graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and earned his Masters of Science degree (health and physical education) in 2000. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
