THE LAST GAME Wildcats bounce back from disappointing loss to SFA in dominating win over Cardinals

O

ne week after lamenting the lack of energy and enthusiasm his team played with in a loss against Stephen F. Austin, ACU head coach Adam Dorrel had no such complaints about his team after the Wildcats dismantled Incarnate Word, 45-20, last Saturday night at Benson Stadium. The win – which pushes the Wildcats to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the Southland Conference – is ACU’s first on the road since a 37-35 win over Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 15, 2014, snapping a 14-game skid. The Cardinals, meanwhile, dropped to 0-4 and 0-1 and fall to 2-7 all-time against ACU as the Wildcats snapped a two-game losing streak in San Antonio. Last week’s game was never in doubt as the Wildcats led throughout, at one point scoring 31 unanswered points to go from a 7-6 lead in the first quarter to a 35-6 halftime lead and 38-6 advantage early in the third quarter. The Wildcats scored 28 second-quarter points on two touchdown runs by quarterback Dallas Sealey, a 16-yard scoring pass from Sealey to Troy Grant and a six-yard scoring run by Tracy James. Sealey finished the game 21 of 31 for 306 yards and one score and ran the ball nine times for 22 yards and three touchdowns. James carried the ball 13 times for 54 yards and one score as ACU had 97 yards on 31 carries as a team. Sealey now has eight career 300-yard passing games and 11 250-yard passing games, and was part of a night that saw the Wildcats rack up 447 yards of total offense. The ACU defense, meanwhile, continued to play well, holding Incarnate Word to just 237 total yards on 56 plays, limited the Cardinals to just 3 of 13 on third downs and forced two turnovers, a forced fumble by Adonis Davis and an interception by Sam Denmark, both in the decisive second quarter. The defense also came up with a couple of big stops in the second quarter and in the second half Erik Huhn blocked a punt that set up a score.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LAST WEEK • Dallas Sealey finished the game with 306 passing yards and is 10th in ACU history in passing yards with 4,790. 2

2017 WILDCAT FOOTBALL

Parker McKenzie (2013-16) is ninth on the all-time list with 5,246 passing yards. •

Dallas ran for three touchdowns in the game – all in the first half – to give him 11 in his career. Sealey had a career-high four rushing touchdowns last Sept. 10 in a loss to Northern Colorado.

Senior MLB Sam Denmark had an interception late in the first half, his first pick of the season and sixth of his career. Four of his six career interceptions have come against Incarnate Word as he picked off a pair of passes against the Cardinals in a 21-0 win in Abilene on Sept. 20, 2014, and had another against UIW in a 52-27 win in Abilene on Oct. 22, 2016.

STAT CORNER •

Prior to Saturday night’s game, ACU’s first team offense had scored four touchdowns in the first four games. It scored five touchdowns in the first half Saturday night against the Cardinals.

QUOTABLE ACUhead coach Adam Dorrel … on bouncing back from Sept. 23 loss vs. SFA “I was very proud of our team and the way they came out and played, especially after the disappointment of last week. We played with passion and intensity, and if you can do that for four quarters and execute your game plan you’ve got a good chance to win.”

ACU head coach Adam Dorrel … on the slow start to the game “Our emotions were running a little high to start the game, and we didn’t want that to happen. But we’ve got to learn from that because next week will be emotional, too. We’ve got to be able to come out and start faster.” … on the crowd and atmosphere at Wildcat Stadium “That’s what it’s supposed to be like. The student crowd was terrific, and the turnout from the community was awesome. It was an electric atmosphere down on the field, and I think it played a part in our slow start.”

The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more. This includes reserved season tickets and season parking for football.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats, Cowboys each seek to maintain momentum in key Southland Conference contest

W

hat a difference once week can make in the life of a football team’s season. Just last week the ACU Wildcats were coming off a disappointing 20-10 loss to Stephen F. Austin and headed to San Antonio to take on a well-rested squad from Incarnate Word that had won two straight at home against the Wildcats. But the Wildcats got themselves back together last Saturday with a dominant 45-20 win over the Cardinals that wasn’t as close as the score would suggest. ACU’s defense limited UIW to just 237 yards of total offense and 11 first downs, and UIW scored a garbage-time touchdown against the ACU backups to make the final score closer than the game appeared. Now ACU returns to Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium to take on a McNeese football program that it has never beaten in four attempts, including all three games between the teams as Southland Conference foes (2004-16). The only time McNeese has ever played in Abilene was in 2015 when the Cowboys came away with a 15-13 win over the Wildcats in quarterback Dallas Sealey’s first game as a starter. The Cowboys are 4-1 overall and 2-1 in league play and have won four straight after a season-opening 37-35 loss at Nicholls. The Wildcats, meanwhile are 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the league after the win over UIW. That win for the Wildcats snapped a 14-game road losing streak that stretched back to the start of the 2015 season when ACU lost at Fresno State. Saturday night’s game will feature two of the top three defenses in the Southland with McNeese ranked No. 1 in the league in scoring defense (allowing just 19.4 points per game), rushing defense (allowing 55.8 ypg) and total defense (292.8 ypg) and ACU ranking No. 3 in scoring defense (23.8 ppg), passing defense (208.8 ypg) and total defense (373.2 ypg). McNeese also leads the Southland Conference in sacks with 16, led by Ashari Goins, who has 3.5 sacks. Bryson Gates leads ACU with 2.5 sacks, although he missed last weeks’ game with a slight injury. He should be back in the lineup Saturday against the Cowboys. The two quarterbacks in the game – James Tabary of McNeese and Dallas Sealey of ACU – are two of the top signal-callers in the Southland Conference. Sealey leads the league in completions (129) and attempts (194) 4

2017 WILDCAT FOOTBALL

and is second in the league in completion percentage (66.5 percent behind the 68.6 mark posted by Hayden Hildebrand of Central Arkansas). He’s also third in the league in passing yards per game (235.6) and second in yards (1,178), although he has only thrown four TD passes on the season. Sealey’s top target on the season is senior wideout Troy Grant, who leads the Southland Conference in receptions (29) for 304 yards (third in the league) and one score. He’s fifth in the league in receiving yards per game (60.8 percent).

Tabary, meanwhile, is second in the league in completions (101) and attempts (162) and leads the league in TD passes (14). He’s tied for the league lead with six interceptions and is third in the league in passing yards (1,173) and fourth in the league in completion percentage (62.3 percent). Running back Justin Pratt is second in the league in rushing yards per game (77.2) with David Hamm tied for sixth in the league in yards per game (65.2).

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

LEE DE LEÓN

L

ee De León is in his fourth year (third complete athletics season) as director of athletics at ACU, and in 2017-18, he will be leading the Wildcats in their first year of full eligibility as an NCAA Division I affiliate. Abilene Christian completed its four-year transition from NCAA Division II in 2016-17 with two more Southland Conference titles (women’s basketball and men’s tennis), giving it four conference championships during the transition period. The Wildcats also finished sixth in the league’s Commissioner’s Cup, which measures its top athletics programs. The Wildcats enjoyed a banner year in many respects in 2016-17, including academically where the athletics program boasted a combined GPA of 3.11, the highest of the four-year transition period. Eight of the 16 programs improved their combined team GPA over their 2015-16 mark. De León oversaw the implementation of the Wildcat Club in 2015-16, turning it into a huge success. By the end of December 2016, 703 people had signed up, helping ACU Athletics raise more than $6.25 million in Wildcat Club gifts, including the Wildcat Annual Fund, capital and endowment gifts, as well as donations to ACU’s sport-specific excellence funds. De León also led the Wildcats’ fundraising efforts for Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus football venue in more than 70 years. De León’s efforts have increased the Champions Circle (donors who donate at least $10,000 per year) to more than 30 members and sold 13 suites at the stadium.

He became the eighth director of athletics in ACU history on Nov. 13, 2014, taking over the Wildcats’ program in the midst of transitioning from NCAA Division II status. Prior to joining the ACU staff, De León was the associate director of athletics for development and executive director of the Lobo Club at the University of New Mexico. While there he was in charge of UNM’s Lobo Club, which raises funds for all Lobo teams, programs and student-athletes. Prior to joining the staff at New Mexico, De León served three years at the University of Arizona, first as the director of annual giving and then as assistant athletics director for major gifts and annual giving. Before his stop in Tucson, Ariz., De León spent three years at the University of Houston as the assistant director of marketing and later, director of marketing. De León also worked at Louisiana State University in 2005 as a marketing assistant for women’s soccer. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2004, De León earned his master’s degree in sports management from Texas A&M University in 2005. He met his wife, Lacey, at Texas A&M and they have been married nine years and have two sons, Landon and Luke.

HEAD COACH

ADAM DORREL

A

T dam Dorrel – who has led his teams to remarkable conference and national playoff success the past six seasons – was introduced Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head coach in ACU football history. Dorrel joined the ACU staff after leading his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University, to its second straight NCAA Division II national championship and third under his watch. In six previous seasons as a head coach, Dorrel compiled a 76-8 record for a 90.5 winning percentage that is the best active mark in college football, ahead of Ohio State University’s Urban Meyer (second at 85.5 percent). Dorrel led the Bearcats to the NCAA Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and coached them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at Northwest. That 30-game streak is the longest in the nation at any

level, besting the University of Alabama’s 25-game winning streak by five games. He also was voted the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Division II Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, and 2016 when his teams won national titles. The Bearcats also were highly successful in the classroom. Northwest student-athletes had a higher cumulative GPA than the rest of the student body for more than 10 years. The football program was part of that, carrying a cumulative team GPA of 2.89 in Fall 2015 with three student-athletes earning a 4.0 GPA and another 62 earning at least a 3.0 GPA. Northwest football players earned more than 200 academic all-MIAA citations since 2011 and six earned Academic all-America honors. A native of Maryville, Missouri, Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
