THE LAST GAME ACU opens Wildcat Stadium in style, topping HBU, 24-3, in Southland Conference opener for both teams
A
bilene Christian University took defending its new home turf quite literally last Saturday night, limiting Houston Baptist University to 129 yards of offense in a 24-3 win before a sellout crowd in the inaugural game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. ACU improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Southland Conference, playing a home game on campus for the first time since 1958. The Wildcats set a defensive tone early, limiting the Huskies to 18 yards of passing and 76 total yards in the first half. Abilene Christian, which played several miles from campus at Shotwell Stadium for 57 full seasons, opened the scoring when De’Andre Brown scampered 5 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. HBU countered with a 54-yard field goal by Alex Chadwick. Wildcat quarterback Dallas Sealey tossed a 33-yard scoring pass to Carl Whitley with 38 seconds left in the first half and Nik Grau added a 23-yard field goal at the start of the fourth quarter. Luke Anthony wrapped up ACU’s scoring with a 17-yard TD throw to Josh Fink with 2:03 left in the game. Sealey completed 28 of 38 passes for 195 yards and a TD. Tracey James led ACU in rushing with 56 yards and Sealey scrambled for 46. HBU managed just seven first downs against the inspired Wildcat defense. Linebacker Garrett Dolan had 19 tackles for HBU and safety Nicholas Smith added 12 and one interception. Bailey Zappe and Jack Swenson teamed to complete just 11 passes for 60 yards. Terrance Peters led all rushers with 68 yards.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LAST WEEK • ACU held Houston Baptist to 18 passing yards and 76 yards overall in the first half, and just 129 overall for the game. • Wildcat punter Simon Laryea averaged 49.5 yards on four kicks, including a 70-yarder in the first quarter. • Luke Anthony threw a TD pass for the second time in three games while playing in relief of starter Dallas Sealey.

STAT CORNER •
ACU held Houston Baptist to 18 passing yards and 76 total yards of offense in the first half. The Wildcat dominance continued into the third quarter, when HBU could muster only another 8 yards.
QUOTABLE ACU running back De’Andre Brown … on scoring the first touchdown at Wildcat Stadium “That’s been a goal of mine since there was just a pile of dirt out here where the stadium is now. I’ve been thinking about that for two years. That’s been one of my goals, and I’m glad I was able to accomplish it.”
ACU head coach Adam Dorrel … on the slow start to the game “Our emotions were running a little high to start the game, and we didn’t want that to happen. But we’ve got to learn from that because next week will be emotional, too. We’ve got to be able to come out and start faster.” … on the crowd and atmosphere at Wildcat Stadium “That’s what it’s supposed to be like. The student crowd was terrific, and the turnout from the community was awesome. It was an electric atmosphere down on the field, and I think it played a part in our slow start.”
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more. This includes reserved season tickets and season parking for football.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats, Lumberjacks face off in key Southland Conference contest at Wildcat Stadium
O
ne week after opening Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium to much fanfare and capping the weekend with a 24-3 win over Houton Baptist, the ACU Wildcats will be back on their home turf tonight when they host a team coming off a win over Incarnate Word in a game that ended in one of the most bizarre ways imaginable. Both the Wildcats and Lumberjacks are 1-2 overall, and enter tonight’s contest after opening Southland Conference play last weekend with victories. ACU got its first conference win over the Huskies with a dominating defensive effort (limiting HBU to just 129 yards of total offense) and an offense that ran the ball 41 times for 162 yards and controlled the clock for 82 plays and nearly 39 minutes in the game. Dallas Sealey threw for 195 yards and one TD – a big 33-yard strike to Carl Whitley just before halftime to give ACU a 14-3 lead at the break – and backup Luke Anthony threw another late in the game to Josh Fink to seal the victory. SFA led Incarnate Word 21-0 after the first quarter and then watched the Cardinals rally to take a 31-21 lead early in the fourth. But the Lumberjacks cut the lead to 31-24 on a Storm Ruiz field goal with 8:24 to play and tied it at 31-31 with 5:24 left on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Foster Sawyer to Tamrick Pace. That only set up one of the strangest endings of the young 2017 season. UIW snapped the ball on third-and-10 from its own 25-yard-line with 15 seconds to play and ran a flea-flicker, trying to get a receiver open deep down the middle of the field to set up a potential game-winning field goal attempt. Instead, Sean Brophy’s pass was intercepted by Alize Ward at the SFA 30-yard line, and he returned the pick 70 yards for a touchdown, collapsing into the end zone just after time had expired, giving the ’Jacks the 37-31 win and setting off a wild celebration for SFA. Ward earned Southland Conference and STATS National Defensive Player of the Week honors for his effort on the game-winning play. ACU enters Saturday’s game with the second-lowest scoring offense in the league (16.0 points per game), while the Lumberjacks are 10th in the 11-team league in scoring defense, allowing 46.7. 4
2017 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
ACU is fourth in scoring defense (26.3 ppg) and SFA is eighth in scoring offense (21.7). The Wildcats are eighth in the league in total offense (333.7 yards per game) and SFA is 10th (274), while ACU is sixth in total defense (405 yards per game allowed) and SFA is 10th at 506.7. The Wildcats are led offensively by junior quarterback Dallas Sealey, who is fifth in passing yards per game (231) and leads the league in completions (86), attempts (129) and completion percentage (66.7). He completed a career-high 73.7 percent of his passes
last week against Houston Baptist (28 of 38). Sawyer is eighth in the league in passing yards per game (170), but the Lumberjacks are 11th in rushing yards per game (59.3), just behind ACU, which ranks 10th at 77.3. Defensively, the Wildcats are second in the league on third downs, holding teams to just 11 for 32 (34.4 percent) through the first three weeks of the season. ACU safety Bolu Onifade – who had a career-high 17 tackles two weeks against Colorado State – is tied for ninth in the league in tackles with 23 (7.7 per game).

P4X NIGHT
T
he ACU Wildcats return to action tonight at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium for a Southland Conference matchup against Stephen F. Austin on Play 4 Rex Foundation Night at the stadium. ACU will be wearing gold ribbons – the color representing pediatric cancer – with the P4X logo emblazoned across the middle of the ribbon. This marks the fourth straight year that the Wildcats have participated in P4X Day and they are 2-1 in the games dating back to a 21-0 win over Incarante Word in 2014, followed by a 35-32 win over Stephen F. Austin in 2015. The P4X Foundation was founded by ACU associate director of athletics Lance Fleming and his wife, Jill, after their 10-year-old son, Rex, passed away in November 2012 after a two-year battle against brain cancer. The foundation raises money to aid families in the Big Country who are dealing with pediatric cancer. Since its inception, donors and sponsors have generously given to the P4X Foundation, and including the 2017 golf tournament, the foundation has taken in close to $300,000 in gifts and donations. It has been true to its mission of helping pediatric cancer patients and their families with expenses, etc., by providing thousands of dollars that have been generously given by our donors. The foundation has donated more than 50 Apple devices to pediatric cancer patients at both Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene and Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. Here are the other ways our donors have assisted the P4X Foundation in helping those dealing with and living with cancer: • Donated $25,000 to the new Hendrick Hospice facility; • Donated $20,000 to build a new rehab kitchen at the West Texas Rehabilitation Center;
• Given more than $10,000 to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth where so many families from Abilene and the Big Country spend long months in treatment;
• Donated $2,000 to the Take the Reins Therapeutic Center to allow the center to purchase four horses that will be used in a Horses for Healing program in Hermleigh, Texas; • Donated money to the Rex Fleming Endowed Scholarship fund at ACU.

Rex was a patient at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, from November 2010 through November 2012 during his courageous battle with an aggressive tumor near the center of his brain. Rex was 8 years old when he was diagnosed with Grade 3 Glioma Astrocytoma, and over the next two years he underwent two surgeries in addition to dozens of radiation and bi-monthly chemotherapy treatments. Since Rex’s passing in 2012, the foundation has become a resource of help – financially and in other ways – for pediatric cancer patients and their families who are struggling with life-altering diseases, similar to the Flemings. One of the Flemings’ goals is to have “Play 4 Rex” become a symbol for living a life with passion, with purpose and with love, much like Rex lived his life. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
LEE DE LEÓN
L
ee De León is in his fourth year (third complete athletics season) as director of athletics at ACU, and in 2017-18, he will be leading the Wildcats in their first year of full eligibility as an NCAA Division I affiliate. Abilene Christian completed its four-year transition from NCAA Division II in 2016-17 with two more Southland Conference titles (women’s basketball and men’s tennis), giving it four conference championships during the transition period. The Wildcats also finished sixth in the league’s Commissioner’s Cup, which measures its top athletics programs. The Wildcats enjoyed a banner year in many respects in 2016-17, including academically where the athletics program boasted a combined GPA of 3.11, the highest of the four-year transition period. Eight of the 16 programs improved their combined team GPA over their 2015-16 mark. De León oversaw the implementation of the Wildcat Club in 2015-16, turning it into a huge success. By the end of December 2016, 703 people had signed up, helping ACU Athletics raise more than $6.25 million in Wildcat Club gifts, including the Wildcat Annual Fund, capital and endowment gifts, as well as donations to ACU’s sport-specific excellence funds. De León also led the Wildcats’ fundraising efforts for Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus football venue in more than 70 years. De León’s efforts have increased the Champions Circle (donors who donate at least $10,000 per year) to more than 30 members and sold 13 suites at the stadium.
He became the eighth director of athletics in ACU history on Nov. 13, 2014, taking over the Wildcats’ program in the midst of transitioning from NCAA Division II status. Prior to joining the ACU staff, De León was the associate director of athletics for development and executive director of the Lobo Club at the University of New Mexico. While there he was in charge of UNM’s Lobo Club, which raises funds for all Lobo teams, programs and student-athletes. Prior to joining the staff at New Mexico, De León served three years at the University of Arizona, first as the director of annual giving and then as assistant athletics director for major gifts and annual giving. Before his stop in Tucson, Ariz., De León spent three years at the University of Houston as the assistant director of marketing and later, director of marketing. De León also worked at Louisiana State University in 2005 as a marketing assistant for women’s soccer. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2004, De León earned his master’s degree in sports management from Texas A&M University in 2005. He met his wife, Lacey, at Texas A&M and they have been married nine years and have two sons, Landon and Luke.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel – who has led his teams to remarkable conference and national playoff success the past six seasons – was introduced Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head coach in ACU football history. Dorrel joined the ACU staff after leading his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University, to its second straight NCAA Division II national championship and third under his watch. In six previous seasons as a head coach, Dorrel compiled a 76-8 record for a 90.5 winning percentage that is the best active mark in college football, ahead of Ohio State University’s Urban Meyer (second at 85.5 percent). Dorrel led the Bearcats to the NCAA Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and coached them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at Northwest. That 30-game streak is the longest in the nation at any
level, besting the University of Alabama’s 25-game winning streak by five games. He also was voted the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Division II Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, and 2016 when his teams won national titles. The Bearcats also were highly successful in the classroom. Northwest student-athletes had a higher cumulative GPA than the rest of the student body for more than 10 years. The football program was part of that, carrying a cumulative team GPA of 2.89 in Fall 2015 with three student-athletes earning a 4.0 GPA and another 62 earning at least a 3.0 GPA. Northwest football players earned more than 200 academic all-MIAA citations since 2011 and six earned Academic all-America honors. A native of Maryville, Missouri, Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
