THE LAST GAME Baylor pulls away from pesky Wildcats for 55-27 win in ACU’s first game vs. Big 12 opponent
B
aylor University forged a 17-0 first-quarter lead, traded scores in the second with Abilene Christian University, then wore down the FCS-member Wildcats 55-27 in both teams’ opening game last Saturday night in McLane Stadium. Head coach Matt Rhule’s Bears lost 48-45 to Liberty in its first game last year, and ensured it would not repeat that at home against another FCS opponent in the Wildcats. Baylor led just 17-7 after one quarter, traded scores with ACU the rest of the half and eventually prevailed in a game that saw the teams combine for 1,072 yards of offense and multiple big plays. “I was very proud of our team (Saturday night),” ACU head coach Adam Dorrel said. “I thought we played extremely hard against a Big 12 team. We did a lot of good things that we can build on going forward. What we’re trying to do is build our team for the start of conference play (Sept. 15 at Houston Baptist), and I believe we got off to a good start.” The Wildcats made the score 38-20 when sophomore placekicker Oscar Hernandez kicked a field goal as time expired in the second quarter. ACU leaned on long-distance scoring plays in the first half: a 54-yard pass from quarterback Luke Anthony to wide receiver D.J. Fuller, a 75-yard dash by running back Billy McCrary and Hernandez’s 46-yard kick. Baylor outscored ACU 10-7 in the third quarter and 7-0 in the fourth to salt away the win. Despite this being Baylor’s 117th season playing football and ACU’s 97th, the two church-affiliated Texas universities had never played each other. The Bears are now 17-1 all-time against teams from the Southland Conference. Baylor was led by running back John Lovett, who rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns. JaMycal Hasty added two touchdowns and 102 yards on the ground. Quarterbacks Charlie Brewer, the starter, and Jalan McClendon, combined for 311 yards passing and two scores. Denzel Mims caught three passes for 80 yards and Jalen Hurd had four for 58 and a 25-yard TD. Connor Martin kicked field goals of 35 and 50 yards. The Bears outgained the Wildcats 606-466 in total offense and led 26-19 in first downs. ACU’s Anthony completed 25 of 37 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns, and was intercepted once. 2
2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
McCrary, a junior transfer from Cal-Berkley, led a rejuvenated rushing attack for the Wildcats, totaling 141 yards on just six carries. Fuller caught nine passes for 102 yards and one score and Hernandez kicked two field goals. ACU’s lone TD of the second half was a 7-yarder from Anthony to wide receiver Chase Cokley. The Wildcat defense limited Baylor to only two of nine third-down conversions and were led in tackles by junior safety Bolu Onifade with nine and senior safety Erik Huhn with seven. Sophomore cornerback Koy Richardson intercepted a pass. Despite the loss, ACU’s effort made an impression on Baylor’s second-year head coach Matt Rhule
“I’d like to thank Abilene Christian and coach Dorrel,” Rhule said. “I thought they played a tremendous football game, and he’s a heck of a football coach. They came ready to go. “I told our guys they were not the type of team that would go away, that they would fight, and that’s what they did,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for them and the way that they played and the class with which they played. It was an honor to take a knee with them at the end of the game and sit there and pray and give thanks with them.”
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more. This includes reserved season tickets and season parking for football.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats open 2018 home schedule against old Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State
T
he ACU Wildcats will open the home portion of the 2018 football schedule Saturday night, re-kindling an old rivalry against former Lone Star Conference foe Angelo State. Kickoff at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium is set for 6 p.m. The Wildcats are 0-1 on the season after falling at Baylor last Saturday, 55-27, in the season-opening game in Waco. The game was the first ever for the Wildcats against an opponent from the Big 12 Conference. ACU acquitted itself quite well in the game, rushing for 220 yards and piling up 466 yards of total offense, its best single-game total since Oct. 22, 2016, when the Wildcats put up 500 yards in a blowout win over Incarnate Word. Junior transfer running back Billy McCrary ran for 141 yards and one score, a 75-yarder in the second quarter that pulled ACU to within 31-17. He also had a 47-yard run in the game, touching the ball just six times, averaging 23.5 yards per carry on the night. ACU sophomore quarterback Luke Anthony was efficient and effective, completing 25 of 37 passes for 224 yards and two touchdown, one to D.J. Fuller (a 54-yard strike on a rollout to the right, resulting in the first touchdown of the season), and the other to junior wide receiver Chase Cokley, the first touchdow reception of his career. Fuller played his first game since the end of the 2016 season, returning last Saturday after redshirting last year. He recorded nine catches for 102 yards and one score, all coming in the first half. He missed the second half with a leg injury that could limit him Saturday against Angelo State. Defensively, the Wildcats’ starting safeties (Bolu Onifade and Erik Huhn) led the team in tackles with nine and seven, respectively, while middle linebacker Jeremiah Chambers and backup safety Brandon Richmond had six stops each. The Rams opened their 2018 season last Saturday with a 24-17 win over Western Oregon in Monmouth, Oregon. Angelo State trailed 17-16 with 1:46 left in the game, but drove 67 yards in five plays, scoring with 52 seconds left on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Rotherham to Lawson Ayo for the winning points. Rotherham threw for 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Payne Sullins threw for 87 yards 4

but was intercepted twice. Tyrese Nathan ran for 134 yards and one score as Angelo State piled up 471 yards of total offense while limiting Western Oregon to just 313. Keke Chism caught seven passes for 106 yards and one touchdown, while Tashani Bibbs caught seven passes for 90 yards. Defensively, linebackert Hunter Kyle had 10 tackles and two interceptions to earn LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Angelo State head coach Will Wagner was an
All-American defensive back at Hardin-Simmons University (1992-95) before he joined the coaching staff at Northwest Missouri State, where he coached with current ACU head coach Adam Dorrel. Wagner first served as a graduate assistant coach before being hired as defensive backs coach, a job he held even after being named assistant head coach from 2007-10. ACU is on the road the next two weeks, playing its Southland Conference opener at Houston Baptist (Sept. 15) before taking on Stephen F. Austin (Sept. 22).

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
ALLEN WARD
A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel is in his second season after being named the 20th head football coach in ACU history in December 2016. Dorrel’s Wildcats were 2-9 overall and 2-7 in the Southland Conference last season. ACU’s signature victory was a 24-3 win over Houston Baptist on Sept. 16 in the first game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus home stadium since World War II. At the end of September, the Wildcats went to Incarnate Word to take on the Cardinals and came away with a 45-20 victory, snapping the Wildcats’ 14-game road losing streak that dated back to the start of the 2015 season. Prior to that win over UIW, ACU’s last road win was a 37-35 win over Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches on Nov. 15, 2014. In his first season at ACU, Dorrel saw some tremendous off-field strides, especially in the areas of
academics and community service. The ACU football program saw its overall GPA improve from 2.71 in 2016-17 to 2.95 in 2017-18 after posting semester GPAs of 2.95 (fall) and 2.96 (spring). The Wildcats also have become active partners in the community with an annual spring cleanup day around Abilene and several other projects. Dorrel’s players put in more than 500 hours of community service in 2017-18. Dorrel came to ACU after six seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II power Northwest Missouri State University. He was introduced as the ACU head coach two days after the 2016 national championship game. Dorrel’s team won its second straight national title and third under his leadership with a 29-3 win in 2016 over North Alabama. A native of Maryville, Missouri, he and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam. 2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
