THE LAST GAME McNeese defense, late punt return for TD more than ACU can overcome in 24-21 defeat
D
arion Dunn returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter last Saturday night to lift the ninth-ranked McNeese Cowboys to a 24-21 win over Abilene Christian University in a Southland Conference game at Cowboy Stadium. The Wildcats (2-4 overall and 1-3 in the league) had gone toe-to-toe with the Cowboys (5-1 and 4-0) all night, but were forced to punt with five minutes to play, trailing 17-14. Simon Laryea unleashed a 56-yard punt that Dunn fielded at the 27-yard line, turned it up field, cut to his left and ran untouched into the end zone for a 24-14 lead with 4:50 left. But the Wildcats wouldn’t quit, driving 75 yards on nine plays to a touchdown in just 2:48. On third-and-10 early in the drive, quarterback Luke Anthony – who broke his own school record for completions in a game with 43 – hit freshman Kobe Clark for 22 yards to the ACU 47-yard line to kick-start the drive. A few plays later, Anthony rolled right, kept the play alive and found Torin Justice down the right sideline for 36 yards to the 5-yard line. On the next play, Anthony threw his second touchdown pass of the night as he connected with Justice for a score to cut the McNeese lead to 24-21 with 2:02 left in the game. ACU went with the onside kick, but McNeese recovered the ball and was able to run the clock down under one minute to play before being forced to punt. ACU took over on its 1-yard line and a couple of first-down throws to Josh Fink moved the ball out to the 25-yard line with 30 seconds left. However, Justice caught a pass on an inside screen for no gain and with no timeouts left the Wildcats had to scramble to get one more play off. They did, but Anthony was sacked by Chris Livings on the final play of the game to seal the win for the Cowboys. McNeese entered the game ranked 25th in the nation in total defense (allowing just 327 yards per game) and 20th in scoring defense (allowing just 19.6 points per game), but it was outplayed by the Wildcats’ defense. ACU limited the Cowboys to just 292 yards of total offense (48 rushing and 244 passing) and only 14 first downs. The Wildcats entered the game with just nine sacks on the season, but had six sacks of 2

McNeese quarterback James Tabary. ACU totaled 315 yards of offense, although 314 of those yards came through the air. The Wildcats had one of the nation’s best rushing offenses, averaging 195.4 yards per game, but were limited to one yard against the Cowboys, who allow just 88.4 yards per game on the ground. The Wildcats lost 40 yards on the ground because of five sacks of Anthony. Tracy James carried the ball seven times for 40 hard-earned yards, but the Wildcats never could generate any rushing offense. McNeese got on the board first with a 6-yard scoring pass from Tabary to Trevor Begue with 8:15
remaining in the first quarter. ACU answered with a 1-yard scoring run by Anthony with 2:55 left. McNeese went back on top with 3:04 left in the first half with a 28-yard field goal by Gunnar Raborn. But the Wildcats took a 14-10 lead into halftime when Anthony threw a 17-yard TD pass to Billy McCrary to complete a five-play, 60-yard scoring drive. The Cowboys scored the only points of the third quarter on a 1-yard run by David Hamm to regain a 17-14 lead, and then the teams traded touchdowns inside the final five minutes of the fourth quarter for the final score.

SATURDAY’S GAME Wildcats face second straight nationally ranked opponent in annual Homecoming contest
T
he ACU Wildcats are now into the teeth of their 2018 schedule, and Saturday’s Homecoming opponent enters Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium featuring a loud bark and, perhaps, a stronger bite. The Nicholls Colonels are ranked No. 11 in the nation this week in both the FCS Coaches and STATS polls, and have won three straight games after consecutive losses to Tulane and McNeese. Nicholls opened the season with a 26-23 overtime win over Kansas (Big 12), and after the two-game losing streak have reeled off wins over nationally ranked Sam Houston State, Lamar and Northwestern State by an average of more than 20 points per game. The Wildcats and Colonels will kick off at 2:35 p.m. in ACU’s annual Homecoming contest. ACU is 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Southland Conference after three straight losses by a combined 16 points, including three-point losses at Stephen F. Austin (Sept. 22) and No. 9 McNeese (Oct. 6) in which the decisive points in each game weren’t scored by the opposing offense. In the 24-21 loss at SFA, the winning score came on a fumble recovery in the end zone by the Lumberjacks’ defense, and in last Saturday’s 24-21 loss at McNeese, the Cowboys used a 73-yard punt return inside the final five minutes of the game to build a 24-14 lead over ACU, a score that provided the game’s decisive points when the Wildcats scored a touchdown on their ensuing drive. The game features two teams that each feature offenses and defenses ranking in the top four in the Southland in both total offense and total defense. ACU is second in the league in total offense (465.8 yards per game) with Nicholls third (430.2). And Nicholls is ranked second in the league in total defense (333.8) with the Wildcats ranking fourth (385.5) after giving up just 292 yards to the Cowboys last week. ACU and Nicholls are the only two in the 11-team league to feature units ranked in the top four in total offense and total defense. Individually, ACU quarterback Luke Anthony ranks second in the Southland in passing yards per game (298.3), and his 13 TD passes are tied for the league lead. He tops the Southland in completions (191), attempts (290) and touchdown passes and is third in completion percentage (65.9). Nicholls quarterback Chase 4

Fourcade – a preseason first team all-conference selection – is seventh in the league in passing yards per game (208.7) and total offense per game (254.4). Anthony’s top target is junior WR Josh Fink, who leds the Southland in catches per game (6.7) and is fifth in yards per game (80). Defensively, the Wildcats are led by junior middle linebacker Jeremiah Chambers, who is seocnd in the league in total tackles (63), tackles per game (10.5) and solo tackles (35).
ACU sacked McNeese quarterback James Tabary seven times last week, pushing the Wildcats to fourth in the league in that category with 15. Sophomore end Kameron Hill had two sacks while Dante Hibbert, Jack Gibbens and Cole Burgess had one apiece. Corey Smith and Jonathan Picone were each credited with half of a sack of Tabary.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
ALLEN WARD
A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel is in his second season after being named the 20th head football coach in ACU history in December 2016. Dorrel’s Wildcats were 2-9 overall and 2-7 in the Southland Conference last season. ACU’s signature victory was a 24-3 win over Houston Baptist on Sept. 16 in the first game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus home stadium since World War II. At the end of September, the Wildcats went to Incarnate Word to take on the Cardinals and came away with a 45-20 victory, snapping the Wildcats’ 14-game road losing streak that dated back to the start of the 2015 season. Prior to that win over UIW, ACU’s last road win was a 37-35 win over Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches on Nov. 15, 2014. In his first season at ACU, Dorrel saw some tremendous off-field strides, especially in the areas of
academics and community service. The ACU football program saw its overall GPA improve from 2.71 in 2016-17 to 2.95 in 2017-18 after posting semester GPAs of 2.95 (fall) and 2.96 (spring). The Wildcats also have become active partners in the community with an annual spring cleanup day around Abilene and several other projects. Dorrel’s players put in more than 500 hours of community service in 2017-18. Dorrel came to ACU after six seasons as the head coach at NCAA Division II power Northwest Missouri State University. He was introduced as the ACU head coach two days after the 2016 national championship game. Dorrel’s team won its second straight national title and third under his leadership with a 29-3 win in 2016 over North Alabama. A native of Maryville, Missouri, he and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam. 2018 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
