THE LAST GAME Five field goals by Nicholls beats Wildcats, 29-20, as ACU falls to 2-3 in Southland play
L
orran Fonseca kicked a school-record five field goals last Saturday afternoon, Nicholls blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a first-quarter touchdown and the Colonels withstood a fourth-quarter flurry by ACU to knock off the Wildcats, 29-20, at Manning Stadium. The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the Southland Conference, while the 23rd-ranked Colonels improve to 5-2 and 4-1. ACU trailed 26-13 in the fourth quarter before the Wildcat offense – which ran off 81 plays for 393 yards on the day – got cranked up. First Dallas Sealey (30 of 48 for 323 yards and two touchdowns) hit Josh Fink for 30 yards and then Justin Miller for 11 more to move the ball to the Nicholls 31. Later in the drive he hit Troy Grant for 15 yards to the Nicholls 2-yard line to set up first and goal with about 10 minutes to play. After three runs lost three yards, the Wildcats faced fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line. On fourth down, Sealey swung the ball out to the right where Tracy James caught the ball and bulled his way into the end zone to cut the Nicholls lead to 26-20 with 8:49 left to play. But Nicholls answered with a clutch drive that covered 42 yards, saw the Colonels convert a huge third-and-six play on a 20-yard reception by Dai’jean Dixon and was aided by a roughing the passer penalty. After a holding penalty pushed the Colonels back to the ACU 27 and Chase Fourcade threw an incomplete pass on third down, Fonseca came on and drilled a 44-yard field goal – his fifth field goal of the day – with 6:08 left to push the Nicholls lead to 29-20. On ACU’s ensuing drive, Sealey hit Trevor Crain for 21 yards on the first play before going back to Fink for 13, Chase Cokley for 10, Groy Grant for 11 and James for eight more, moving the ball to the Nicholls 20-yard line with 2:11 remaining. But ACU had to burn its final two timeouts of the game before a fourth-and-1 play, and when the Wildcats finally snap the ball, Hezekiah White stormed through the offensive line and dropped James for a loss of four yards, turning the ball back over to his offense and ending the game. James carried the ball 13 times for 83 yards and caught four passes for 36 yards, while De’Andre Brown had 32 yards on the ground and 73 more receiving as 2

the two ACU running backs combined for 224 yards of total offense. The ACU defense played well again as the Wildcats limited the Colonels to just 308 yards of total offense, including 140 in the second half.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LAST WEEK
QUOTABLE
• • •
ACU head coach Adam Dorrel … on the narrow loss to Nicholls “I’m disappointed for our players, and especially our seniors, because we all really believed this was a game we could win. We made some plays to give us a chance, but just didn’t make enough of them.”
The Wildcats ran 81 plays Saturday night in the loss, the second time they’ve run as many as 80 in a game with the 82 against Houston Baptist on Sept. 16 being the high-water mark for the season. Dallas Sealey threw for 323 yards, his second 300-yard passing game of the season and ninth of his career. With two field goals in the game, Nik Grau now has 43 in his career, tying him with Eben Nelson (2001-04) for second in ACU history. He’s now eight away from topping Morgan Lineberry’s all-time record of 50 set from 2009-12.
• Since re-joining the Southland Conference in 2013-14 and beginning a conference slate in football in 2014, the Wildcats are 0-5 in Louisiana.
The Wildcat Club is the official fundraising organization for ACU Athletics. Membership is open to alumni, community members, parents and other friends. There are many ways to join and benefits begin with an annual gift of $100 or more. This includes reserved season tickets and season parking for football.

SATURDAY’S GAME ACU, Southeastern La. meet in Wildcats’ first on-campus Homecoming contest since ’42
T
he ACU Wildcats return home to Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium today for their first on-campus Homecoming football game since 1942 when the Wildcats played at A.B. Morris Stadium. ACU is 53-34-1 in 88 all-time Homecoming contests, and has won three of its last four such games, including last year’s 52-27 blowout of Incarnate Word in the final Homecoming contest at Shotwell Stadium. The last time the Wildcats played an on-campus Homecoming game was Nov. 20, 1942, when they beat Austin College, 53-0. Since that game ACU has played its Homecoming games at old Fair Park Stadium and Shotwell Stadium. The Wildcats are 1-2 in their new home with a win over Houston Baptist in the first game on Sept. 16, followed by back-to-back narrow losses to Stephen F. Austin on Sept. 23 (20-10) and McNeese on Oct. 7 (13-7). ACU enters today’s game at 2-5 overall and 2-3 on the season after last Saturday’s 29-20 loss at Nicholls. The Colonels used a blocked punt recovered for a touchdown and five field goals to knock off the Wildcats, who are 0-5 in the state of Louisiana since re-joining the Southland Conference in 2013. The ACU defense played well again, allowing just 22 points and 308 yards of offense in the game. The Wildcats gave up just 140 yards of offense to the Colonels in the game’s final 30 minutes, and allowed them to convert just two of 13 third downs into first downs in the game. The Wildcats carry one of the best defenses in the Southland Conference into today’s game against the Lions. ACU ranks third in the league in total defense (allowing 358.9 yards per game), third in scoring defense (23 points per game), second in pass defense (196 yards per game), and fifth in rush defense (162.9 yards per game). The Lions will bring the league’s top rushing offense into the game as they average 303.6 yards per game on the ground and are led by Marcus Cooper, who is averaging 91.8 yards per game on the ground and has scored a pair of touchdowns. Southeastern also has five other backs averaging at least 25 yards on the ground. Julius Maracalin leads the team with seven rushing touchdowns. 4
2017 WILDCAT FOOTBALL
That rushing attack has helped the Lions overcome an 0-3 start to their season and carry a 4-3 overall record and 4-1 league mark into today’s game. The Lions are one of the top scoring teams in the league at 40 points per game and have scored 49, 49, 49 and 56 points, respectively, in their last four contests. ACU, meanwhile, is led offensively by quarterback Dallas Sealey, who leads the Southland in completions (177) and attempts (277), is second in completion percentage (63.9), third in passing yards (1,615), third
in yards per game (230.7), seventh in pass efficiency (115.7 rating), and tied for eighth in TD passes with six. Senior wide receiver Troy Grant is tied for third in the league in receptions (30), tied for fourth in receptions per game (4.6), and 10th in yards per game (49.4). Sophomore wideout DeShun Qualls is seventh in receptions per game at 4.3, and senior running back De’Andre Brown is tied for eighth in the Southland in receptions per game at 4.2.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
LEE DE LEÓN
L
ee De León is in his fourth year (third complete athletics season) as director of athletics at ACU, and in 2017-18, he will be leading the Wildcats in their first year of full eligibility as an NCAA Division I affiliate. Abilene Christian completed its four-year transition from NCAA Division II in 2016-17 with two more Southland Conference titles (women’s basketball and men’s tennis), giving it four conference championships during the transition period. The Wildcats also finished sixth in the league’s Commissioner’s Cup, which measures its top athletics programs. The Wildcats enjoyed a banner year in many respects in 2016-17, including academically where the athletics program boasted a combined GPA of 3.11, the highest of the four-year transition period. Eight of the 16 programs improved their combined team GPA over their 2015-16 mark. De León oversaw the implementation of the Wildcat Club in 2015-16, turning it into a huge success. By the end of December 2016, 703 people had signed up, helping ACU Athletics raise more than $6.25 million in Wildcat Club gifts, including the Wildcat Annual Fund, capital and endowment gifts, as well as donations to ACU’s sport-specific excellence funds. De León also led the Wildcats’ fundraising efforts for Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, ACU’s first on-campus football venue in more than 70 years. De León’s efforts have increased the Champions Circle (donors who donate at least $10,000 per year) to more than 30 members and sold 13 suites at the stadium.
He became the eighth director of athletics in ACU history on Nov. 13, 2014, taking over the Wildcats’ program in the midst of transitioning from NCAA Division II status. Prior to joining the ACU staff, De León was the associate director of athletics for development and executive director of the Lobo Club at the University of New Mexico. While there he was in charge of UNM’s Lobo Club, which raises funds for all Lobo teams, programs and student-athletes. Prior to joining the staff at New Mexico, De León served three years at the University of Arizona, first as the director of annual giving and then as assistant athletics director for major gifts and annual giving. Before his stop in Tucson, Ariz., De León spent three years at the University of Houston as the assistant director of marketing and later, director of marketing. De León also worked at Louisiana State University in 2005 as a marketing assistant for women’s soccer. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 2004, De León earned his master’s degree in sports management from Texas A&M University in 2005. He met his wife, Lacey, at Texas A&M and they have been married nine years and have two sons, Landon and Luke.
HEAD COACH
ADAM DORREL
A
T dam Dorrel – who has led his teams to remarkable conference and national playoff success the past six seasons – was introduced Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head coach in ACU football history. Dorrel joined the ACU staff after leading his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University, to its second straight NCAA Division II national championship and third under his watch. In six previous seasons as a head coach, Dorrel compiled a 76-8 record for a 90.5 winning percentage that is the best active mark in college football, ahead of Ohio State University’s Urban Meyer (second at 85.5 percent). Dorrel led the Bearcats to the NCAA Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and coached them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at Northwest. That 30-game streak is the longest in the nation at any
level, besting the University of Alabama’s 25-game winning streak by five games. He also was voted the American Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Division II Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, and 2016 when his teams won national titles. The Bearcats also were highly successful in the classroom. Northwest student-athletes had a higher cumulative GPA than the rest of the student body for more than 10 years. The football program was part of that, carrying a cumulative team GPA of 2.89 in Fall 2015 with three student-athletes earning a 4.0 GPA and another 62 earning at least a 3.0 GPA. Northwest football players earned more than 200 academic all-MIAA citations since 2011 and six earned Academic all-America honors. A native of Maryville, Missouri, Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
