The Academic Hood

The academic regalia worn at college commencements, consisting of a gown, mortarboard cap and hood, originated in medieval Europe. When universities began about the 12th century, the basic item of apparel worn by men and women alike was a long gown or robe. The colors and materials often indicated the social status and wealth of the wearer. An outer cloak was worn over the gown in cold weather. The cloak had a hood hanging down the back, which could be pulled up to cover the head. The modern academic hood has evolved from this medieval garment. Over the centuries, fashion changed, but the European universities retained the medieval dress. The scholars’ apparel was prescribed by university rules and distinguished the scholar from the commoner. In the 18th century, King’s College (now Columbia University) in New York and other colonial colleges began to use the academic apparel of English universities at their graduation ceremonies. The practice spread widely in the U.S. after 1880, and in 1895 an Intercollegiate Commission adopted a code of academic dress that most colleges follow today. The hood is a symbol of the degree the wearer holds and is the most distinctive part of the academic dress. The colors of the hood identify the degree and university or college that conferred it. Hoods worn by the faculty of Abilene Christian University in the Commencement processional are a colorful spectacle representing the many graduate schools faculty members have attended. The hood is lined and carries the colors of the institution conferring the degree – the hoods for all ACU degrees are lined with the familiar purple and white. The velvet border on the outside of the hood identifies the degree: white for the B.A., M.A. and M.L.A.; gold for the B.S., M.S. and S.S.P.; tan for the B.B.A., M.Acc. and MBA; brown for the B.F.A.; pink for the B.M.; orange for the B.S.E.; apricot for the B.S.N., M.S.N. and D.N.P.; sage green for the M.A.T. and M.H.A.; citron for the M.S.S.W.; blue for the M.Ed., Ed.D. and Ed.S.; and scarlet for the M.Div., M.A.C.M., M.A.Mi., M.A.T.S., M.M.F.T. and D.Min. The master’s degree is distinguished from the bachelor’s degree by a wide border. The undergraduate hooding ceremony is one of the high points in an ACU Commencement, for in this ceremony a loved one or friend is privileged to place upon the graduate the centuries-old symbol of his or her academic degree.

DALE AND RITA BROWN

Outlive Your Life Award

Wayne Massey, M.D., and Janice Massey, M.D. With more that nine combined decades in health care, Wayne (’66) and Janice (Munn ’68) Massey’s professional similarities are striking. Both graduated from Abilene Christian, serve on the faculty at Duke University School of Medicine and teach neurology. But each took unique paths and their accomplishments more than stand on their own as they treat the sick, serve their community and educate future physicians. While Wayne attended The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Janice taught high school mathematics and expected to become a stay-at-home mom. But a genetics seminar at ACU once piqued her interest in the subject, and when Wayne completed medical school, she pursued it in graduate school. When Wayne was drafted into the Vietnam War and served at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Janice attended medical school at Georgetown University. Wayne served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve, and has held various positions at Duke and other area hospitals, with a focus on general neurology. He directed the Duke Rehabilitation unit for 25 years and served on the American Academy of Neurology before retiring from clinical practice in 2014. Janice was a pioneer from her early days at Duke, where she was the university’s first female professor of neurology. She works with patients with rare neuromuscular diseases and helped set standards for treatment of myasthenia gravis and Lambert-Eaton syndrome. The Masseys are active members at Cole Mill Road Church of Christ. Wayne serves on ACU’s Board of Trustees, as Janice did for 21 years. After decades of pioneering research, caring for the sick and educating future healers, the Masseys share a legacy that will be felt for generations to come. The Outlive Your Life Award is named for its first recipients, Dale and Rita Brown, and takes its name from the 2010 book by ACU alumnus Max Lucado (’77), Outlive Your Life: You Were Made to Make a Difference, used with permission. The award recognizes all types of servant leadership exhibited by friends or alumni of the university.

He has a bachelor’s degree from Cascade College, a Master of Divinity degree from Abilene Christian and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Lipscomb University. Before he joined the ACU faculty, Ries devoted 18 years to ministry in the Pacific Northwest. He was a youth minister at congregations in Portland and Gresham, Oregon, from 1998-2005, before moving to Abilene in 2005-07 to complete a master’s degree while preaching for the Sidney (Texas) Church of Christ. Ries then served as a preaching minister for the Sterling Drive Church of Christ in Bellingham, Washington, from 2007-10 and for the Federal Way (Washington) Church of Christ from 2010-16. Ries has been a consultant with churches and nonprofits, and a frequent speaker/presenter at conferences on those subjects across the nation, and was a leader in ACU’s collaboration with Barna Group in 2019 that culminated in the monograph, Christians at Work: Examining the Intersection of Calling and Career. SATURDAY COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

A Charge to the Classes Brad E. Cheves, J.D.

Brad E. Cheves, J.D. (’84), vice president for development and external affairs at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, continues to rely on the lessons of wisdom and guidance he received as a Wildcat. While a sophomore student employee of ACU vice president Dr. Robert D. Hunter, he was elected president of the Association of Independent Students of Texas. As a senior and president of the Student Government Association, he worked with vice president Dr. Gary D. McCaleb to establish new traditions such as Wildcat Week. After earning a B.B.A. degree in finance in 1984, he was named assistant to ACU president Dr. William J. Teague. Two years later, he helped coordinate Hunter’s first campaign for the Texas House of Representatives, then became his chief of staff. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Pepperdine University School of Law School in 1991, then becoming its assistant dean for alumni and advancement while teaching at Pepperdine’s Seaver College. In 1995 he became assistant to the university president, then assistant dean, assistant professor, and director of the Public Policy Institute. In 1998 he was named assistant vice president for development at SMU, overseeing a $300 million campaign that raised $542 million. He was Pepperdine’s vice president for advancement and public affairs from 2001-04 before returning to SMU as vice president for development and external affairs, where he presided over a team that brought the George W. Bush Presidential Library to campus in 2013. Cheves also led SMU’s centennial celebration and $750 million capital campaign. It raised $1.15 billion, including funding for 120 new endowed faculty positions and more than $200 million in student scholarships and fellowships. In 2015, when SMU’s Second Century Campaign concluded, it was the most successful, comprehensive capital fundraising campaign at a Texas private university. Today, he oversees SMU’s offices of Development and Alumni Affairs, Marketing and Communications, and Program Services. He serves on the board of Dallas Summer Musicals, New Friends New Life Men’s Advisory Board and the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Advisory Board. Cheves is an elder at the Preston Road Church of Christ in Dallas. He and his wife, Angela, have three sons.

UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC HONORS

Honors at Commencement are based on a student’s GPA on courses taken at ACU. Students must complete at least 64 hours of course work at ACU to qualify to graduate with honors. The GPA thresholds for honors at graduation are 3.6 for cum laude, 3.75 for magna cum laude, and 3.9 for summa cum laude. Honors listed in the Commencement program are based on the current GPA at the time of the graduation. If the final semester’s grades alter the student’s standing, the correct honor will be noted on the diploma. For the distinction of Honors Scholar or Honors Associate, a student’s degree must be enriched with course work through the Honors College. The distinction also requires a GPA of at least 3.5 at the time of graduation. Honors College graduates wear gold stoles in Commencement. University Scholars have superior academic records combined with outstanding service to their department and the university. These students must be recommended by their department and their college to receive this honor. They receive a medallion to be worn with their academic regalia.
