FUTURISTIC STYLE

FUTURISM?? Unpredictable yet Predictable‌. Future is uncertain and it is about one’s prediction and imagination. So is the Futuristic Style in Architecture and Interior Designing. This style had started to evolve in the late eighteenth century when artists and architects were thoroughly bored of the traditional style and they tried to give a new dimension to the contemporary style. With the world becoming mechanized, robots becoming one among the living beings, these artists predicted the features of modern life and came up with a new artistic concept that based on the speed and motion and this is what futurism majorly holds for us. Futuristic style is one of the most imaginative styles of all time. With the future unknown and a huge amount of expectation and anticipation about future, one can imagine a world beyond this world. That’s the main advantage of this style. This style is boundless, very random and can take us anywhere.

HOW DO I IENTIFY FUTURE‌ I MEAN FUTURISTIC STYLE?? Futuristic style is very easily identifiable in terms of forms and shapes. Irregular, asymmetrical shapes, oblique and elliptical lines, angles- all these show dynamism which is the basis of this style. EVn the doors and windows are of various shapes like round, elliptical, hexagonal etc. The futurists where inspired by technology especially chrono photography which is employed in cinema and animation to show movement of an object and this movements slowly made their way into paintings, art , architecture and interior designing. Apart from aesthetics point of view, futurismtic style is perfect composition of clutter free, non gaudy, simple yet trendy and a eco friendly space. The materials and furnitures used are based on their utility and unnecessary articles are not added for beautification. This style incorporates concept with utility, practicality and recyclability. Materials that can be reused and recycled are used in various places in terms of colour, texture, shape etc based on their functionality.

Another very important characteristic is space usage. Space is very well utilized and this style is implemented in smaller spaces keeping in mind the future where it is predicted that homes will be smaller with multi purpose rooms to reduce space wastage which is infact the current trend where people are gradually moving from huge spaces to small spaces. The materials used is a very important feature of this style which makes it look different and trendy. It is not only low in maintenance but it also gives an overall fresh and healthy look. Also considering this style also to be technology savvy, the futuristic spaces contain gadgets like heated towek racks, heated floors, TVs, Jacuzzis etc in the bathrooms and other gadgets like touch controlled blinds, lighting, interior and cabinet doors in the other areas for saving energy thus being eco friendly.

WHAT IS FUTURISTIC STYLE MADE OF? Unlike the traditional and conventional designs, futuristic design is more light and flexible. This lightness and flexibility is necessary for the fantastical shapes explored in this style which is otherwise difficult using heavy materials like wood, stone, brick etc. The use of materials- Iron ( Metal in general), glass, plastic , leather, reinforced concrete, cardboard, fibers and textile fibers are most prominently used. The other materials are mostly used in the finishing core. Another main feature that constitutes this style in terms of materials is finishes and lights. These play a very important role in giving this style the feature of futurism where one can feel mystery, fantasy, that will transport a person to an alien world. Metallic finishes like brass sink, metallic copper lights that gives a shine to the space, neon and LED lights that light up the space – all these give the space an altogether different look and feel.

The furniture used are also futuristic in style to make the entire space look futuristic. Metal chairs and sofas, leather upholstery, tables made of metal, plastic and glass often built is organic or asymmetrical shapes to reflect dynamism in furnitures as well.

MOVIES- WHAT A GREAT SOURCE OF FUTURISTIC STYLE There are so many movies and sets made of futuristic style especially the Sci-Fi films. Films that deal with fantasy or any other fiction tend to work on this style and such movies can be a great source of inspiration in implementing these designs in real projects. This style has been used in movies from as early as 1902 to the present day. Movies like Metropolis, Star Trek, Aliens, Tron Legacy, Oblivion, Starwars, Matrix and so on have been visualized using Futuristic Design very beautifully.
