It?s been a very busy year for Able Canopies so far, and we also have lots of exciting projects booked in for the next few months, so keep an eye out for those in our future newsletters. Our New Fun, Fresh and Fabulous Shade Sail Fabric To Galvanise or Not to Galvanise One of the options we offer when choosing a canopy is the finish ? you can choose from a galvanised finish, a powder coated finish or galvanised and powder coated finish. This probably makes you wonder what the difference is between these finishes and which option would be best for your projects environment? There are many benefits to each finish and below, I am going to explain what these are to help you make the right decision.
Galvanising Why choose to have the canopy galvanised? If galvanising is required, we hot dip the steel to BS EN ISO1461. This standard is referenced as the main standard for the coating of iron and steel. This helps to extend the life span of the canopy by protecting it from corrosion, therefore making it a worthwhile investment. Galvanising the canopy frame could increase the life expectancy of the shade structure by up to 25 years in most locations however, with certain thicknesses in some locations, it could even last up to 40 years! Hot dip galvanising produces a tough, durable and permanently bonded coating which is better than many other systems in protecting steel from damage. What?s more, any bare steel exposed by scratches or drilled holes is protected by the surrounding zinc. However, galvanised steel can be attacked by prolonged exposure to acidic materials in the air.
Powder Coating Powder coating is brilliant because you have a whole world of colours to choose from. We offer powder coating in our range of standard RAL colours, however, we will powder coat your shade structure to any RAL colour of your choice at an additional cost. Powder coating the canopy enables us to create the perfect canopy for your clients setting ? you can create a striking focal point by choosing a contrasting colour or you can allow the canopy to blend in with their current aesthetics by choosing a colour to match their existing colour scheme. We can even powder coat different sections of a structure in different colours! It is very important to be as environmentally friendly as possible these days, therefore, you will be pleased to know that by choosing to have the canopy or shelter powder coated, there will be no waste from the colouring because the overspray can be recycled, allowing it to be reused. Also, the powder coating molecules do not emit many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and therefore have a reduced impact on the environment. The smooth high gloss finish that is produced from powder coating is free from runs, sags, or drips and provides superior edge coverage. It has a superior resistance to chips and scratches and creates a tough finish that withstands industrial usage without denting or cracking. We've Made the Change from CE to UKCA You may have noticed on our website and literature that in-line with the new legalisation, we have made the change from CE to UKCA so all our steel and aluminium structures are now UKCA marked as from October 2021. The changeover was first introduced on 1 January 2021 however, businesses have until 1 January 2023 to make the change. We wanted to make sure we got in there fairly quickly to ensure it was all set inplace because after all, being organised is key when it comes to success. Benjamin Franklin's famous quote ?For every minute spent organising, an hour is earned? rings very true here. New Product Data Sheets We?re currently in the process of updating all our product data sheets to make them much more uniform in style and make it easier to compare our products. Darlington Borough Council Product: The Abberton Wall Mounted Entrance Canopy Size: 21no. 3.2m x 1.2m & 4no. 2.1m x 1.2m Frame Colour: Gentian Blue (RAL 5010) & Pure White (RAL 9010) Polycarbonate Colour: Clear Installation Date: Janurary 2017 - September 2021 Overview Darlington Borough Councilare in the process of completing a new-build housing development in North Darlington where they plan to build a total of 1000 affordable homes over a 10 year period. They have been a direct customer of Able Canopies since 2017 and since then, we have installed a total of 25 canopies for them across three different locations, on six different occasions.
All 25 canopies that we supplied and installed were the Abberton Wall Mounted Entrance Canopy which is the perfect door canopy with its small projection and cantilevered design. The absence of front posts worked well for these projects because they are multi-occupancy residential buildings, and the canopies were positioned above the main and rear entrances to the buildings. The Abberton has a
contemporary design with perforated brackets that gives off a subtle industrial appearance. The frame is constructed from high grade aluminium, which is naturally rust resistant, and is covered with 4mm solid polycarbonate sheets which have a curved glass appearance yet are much stronger. This means that the Abberton will last for many years to come, making it the perfect choice for a long-term entrance canopy on residential buildings.

The first project with Darlington Borough Council was for three entrance canopies at Hammond Drive, which at the time of enquiry was a development site for three blocks of apartments on Hammond Drive. We installed the entrance canopies in January 2017 over two days. The frame was finished in Gentian Blue RAL 5010 to match the existing entrance colours.
After our installation at Hammond Drive, Darlington Borough Council?s Design Team recommended us to their Surveyor for the canopies required at Fenby Avenue. This project featured apartment blocks similar to those at Hammond Drive however, there were four blocks on this site, and they therefore required four canopies. We installed all four entrance canopies over two days in March 2017.

Following on from the first two installations, we were asked to provide quotes for seven Abberton Entrance Canopies on seven new blocks of apartments similar to those in both Hammond Drive and Fenby Avenue. So, in April 2018, we installed the canopies on the new build apartments and again it only took us two days to install them.
Darlington Borough Council were working on a new project opposite the site we previously installed at in Allington Way and required three canopies to provide shade and shelter to the entrances of the new apartments. We provided a quotation and in September 2019 installed the canopies over two days. The canopy frames were powder coated Pure White RAL 9010 as per the previous installation to keep a uniform appearance.

The following year, we were asked to supply and install another four Abberton Wall Mounted Entrance Canopies on their latest new-build apartments in Allington Way. These canopies were installed over two days in July 2021 above the main entrances to the buildings. The canopies were also finished in Pure White RAL 9010 with clear 4mm polycarbonate roof panels.
Our most recent project with Darlington Borough Council is four Abberton Wall Mounted Entrance Canopies which we installed again, in Allington Way onto more of their new-build apartments. This was phase two of the canopies that we installed in July 2021 and has completed the project so far at Allington Way in North Darlington. The installation of all four canopies was completed in two days.
It has been a pleasure to work with Darlington Borough Council on these projects and we hope to continue working with them as their housing project continues into the future.
