Welcome to the Spring edition of Outside Comfort Zone. After our love with timber in the last issue we have restored normal service with a good mix of installs and guidance to help you design and plan your next canopy installation. There is a bit of back to basics feel about this edition. It?s easy to lose sight of the core purpose of canopies as we get involved in the

Finishing Touches External weather protection has the ability to transform school life with the shade and cover that it provides. To add even more value there are some finishing touches that can take any installation to the next level. This recent installation of the Coniston system in North London shows how the addition of soft play flooring and other furniture ensures that the new space is not only eye catching and welcoming, but can also be used safely for lessons and play. It is the all round planning of the space that maximises its use.

use of material and aesthetic requirements. In the end we are here to provide weather protection and make outdoor areas more comfortable and easier to use. Inside you will see great examples of walkways, entrance canopies and some unique applications that transform outside spaces for all users.

Adaptable, Skilful & Practical Being flexible is part of our make up. The skills and products that we use for canopies can often be adapted to other uses around a site to ensure co-ordination with the use of materials which leads to a coherent finish for the new structures. A recent installation at Ashmole Primary School is a good example of this.

Th e M ain Can opy Included in the work was a straight forward free standing Tarnhow mono canopy that created a new play and learn area for the school. Even this canopy had a couple of twists with the overall structure being finished in black, which is not an everyday choice, and then side screens being added. These, as shown in the pictures, were not solid but timber slats that gave the canopy more definition but kept the open feel.

St ylish Scr een s These side fill slats were developed as a design theme that was used in two other locations on the site. The first one was at the school entrance where full height slats, again finished in black, gave some additional protection for visitors to the school. This attractive side panel linked neatly with the canopy. The final piece of the installation was another timber screen, this time installed on a first-floor roof to give screening to a plant room area. This was a particular challenge as working safely at height and ensuring a neat coming together of steel work and timber meant extra care was required. The finished screen adds a stylish visual point to the building and ties in neatly with the canopy and school entrance area.

Adapt able Sk ills The ability to use the skills and materials that would normally be for a canopy have been expanded here to include two practical, yet attractive, screens that not only work together but also complement the overall look and colours of the surrounding building.

Walk this way We get very excited here at Outside Comfort Zone about the fancy designs, innovative fixing solutions and uses of new materials that we see in our installations? and it?s quite right that we should do so and they are the elements that move our part of the construction world forward. What we don?t do is lose sight of the fact that the core purpose of any canopy or shade sail is to provide weather protection. Which brings us to this fantastic install at Hounslow Town Primary School. This is a new build school and it not only highlights the benefits of adding canopies at the point of construction, making for an easier install, but it is also a great reminder of the basics.

One of the key elements of the install was the 42-metre-long walkway that shelters students, staff and vistiors from the elements as they walk into school. The walkway used our flexible Grange Junior system that provides a cost-effective option for a walkway of this size and fits in nicely with the wall mounted Coniston canopies used elsewhere in the school. All the canopies were finished in Dusty Grey (RAL 7037) which worked with the finishing of the windows and doors in the main buildings. This combination of practical weather protection and simple design keeps the focus on the main job ? a more comfortable outdoor environment that will be a great benefit to all who use the school.

Cover in a confined space Even the smallest spaces can benefit from canopy cover. This is especially true of a hospitality environment where extra useable space translates into more customers spending money on food and drink, which in turn becomes profit for the establishment. The example shown here shows how our sleek Beck canopy can be used to provide that necessary additional cover to protect customers from rain showers. This allows the pub involved to put out tables and chairs to expand their dining area. It required some pre-installation work to ensure that the building had the appropriate steel work to fix back to and even then, we had to make a slight adjustment to our fixings to account for the render. The real world execution of a design that looked good on paper but presented a bit of a problem when actually finished. The Beck is light yet robust and with its integrated guttering it provides an elegant and neat finish.

Go Max with the Welford Dome We have featured our timber canopies in many of the recent editions of OCZ. They are ideal for providing cost effective shelter for large spaces. They are not the only option though. As this picture shows, a large space can be effectively transformed into a dining area with the use of our Welford Dome canopy. The Welford is a versatile modular system. It works well as a walkway, or as shown here, as a free-standing canopy. It combines excellent UV protection with high impact resistance. Because of the smart modular design, it can be installed quickly with minimum disruption to the surrounding area. It is a perfect playground canopy and is very popular in the education sector.

More bang for your canopy buck Our Bioclimatic Pergolas are stunning high-end structures that are ideal for hospitality and leisure sites. Designed to shelter users from wet weather and to provide protection from the sun, these stylish systems extend dining and social areas and therefore improve customer service delivery and increase profits. They allow business owners to increase the footprint of their premises and blur the line between indoors and outdoors, enabling customers to flow freely and comfortably from either setting. This increases the opportunities in the hospitality sector for more dining and increased dwell time, meaning increased spend by customers when they are in the establishment. There are two options within the range: The Imperial Senior is a highly attractive canopy that is available as a free standing or wall mounted structure. It features electronic roof slats that can be adjusted via a remote control. They block 100% of the sun?s harmful UV rays when the roof slats are closed and create a watertight seal and protection from rainfall. Alternatively, the roof slats can be opened at an angle to allow a cool breeze to flow through, as well as provide partial shade. Made from aluminium and supplied with a 10 year guarantee, the Imperial Senior adaptable canopy is the perfect canopy for leisure, hospitality and recreation sectors. The Imperial Grand has all the same attributes as the Senior but has more flexibly with the addition of elements like heating and lighting, as its frame is able to hide fixings and electrical wires to provide a neater finish.
