If you’re staying at one of our pet-friendly properties, you’ll enjoy the round-up of our favourite canine-friendly walking tracks and beaches, all worth a visit with your four-legged friend by your side. As always, we also recommend a few events and exhibitions hosted in the city and surrounds that are worth catching in the warmer months.

Make use of round-up features on your banking app. Opt to have your loose change from your everyday purchases automatically routed to your holiday fund account. You’ll be surprised at how quickly small amounts can add up. Consider booking travel outside of peak periods. Prices fluctuate according to demand, so if you can be flexible with travelling outside of popular leisure periods like school holidays, this can translate into some serious savings. Fewer queues and more opportunities to explore a destination at your own pace can also be a silver lining to travelling off-season. Pack light. No one enjoys paying for checked or excess baggage, so consider travelling with a carry-on. Be realistic about how many outfits you’ll actually wear and make use of laundry facilities at your accommodation. Don’t be afraid to ask for the Wi-Fi password. Most restaurants, attractions and accommodation will offer Wi-Fi, so turn off your mobile data and log in to a free network. It’s worth noting that public networks are not necessarily secure, so explore a pre-paid portable router or dongle if you require more flexibility and privacy.

Pound the pavement. Without a doubt, walking is the cheapest form of transport and the best way to stumble upon attractions you might have missed otherwise. If you’ve got longer distances in mind, rent a bike or take public transport.

15

SAVE YOUR PENNIES

Create a dedicated holiday savings account, and name it after your destination. Studies have shown that by writing your goals and aspirations down – in this case, a savings goal –you’re far more likely to achieve them. Plus, it serves as a timely reminder each time you’re tempted to dip into your savings.

Eat where the locals eat. It goes without saying that tourist areas can be rife with expensive, mediocre restaurants and bars. For a more authentic and affordable dining experience, explore the side streets for lesser-known establishments or street vendors, or seek a recommendation from a local.

Top tips for a budget savvy getaway

Speaking of food, prepare some meals on your own. When you arrive at your destination, visit a local market to purchase ingredients so that you can prepare some meals in the comfort and convenience of your accommodation. Select Abode Hotels offer fully equipped in-room kitchenette facilities and an on-site Abode Pantry, stocked with snacks, ready-made meals, beverages and other travel essentials.

Plan your trip around free activities. Before you head straight to the overrated paid tourist attractions, consider jumping online to search for free activities in your area, such as complimentary guided walking tours, spending a day at the beach, or making use of free entry days at major museums and galleries.

With borders open and the warmer weather in full swing, it’s likely you’ve thought about booking a long-awaited trip away, and if there’s one thing better than a much-needed holiday, it’s one that won’t break the bank. With this in mind, we’ve compiled our top tips for planning a memorable travel adventure, without the hefty price tag.

DREAM TEAM Whether you’re planning a celebration with friends, a fun day out with the family, or a corporate team building experience; you’ll find a group activity perfectly suited to any occasion, right here in Canberra.

Prove your problem-solving skills by escaping from a room filled with puzzles, but be quick – the clock is ticking. Located in Phillip, Escape Rooms Canberra describes the experiences it offers as immersive and interactive, requiring you and your group to complete an objective (think: stopping a magic show from going horribly wrong, or saving the world from a nuclear apocalypse) and escape within a 70-minute timeframe. escaperoomscanberra.com

An original settler’s slab hut built in 1860, the Pye Cottage Museum was established in 1975 after being painstakingly moved to Gunning from its original site in the nearby town of Dalton. A small rural town located between Goulburn and Yass, Gunning was the starting point of one of Australia’s most significant colonial explorations back in 1824 and is home to a wealth of historical sites and buildings dating back to that period.

Tim Howard at the annoucement of Floriade 2022, courtesy of Events ACT.

I would have to thank my parents for the green thumb genes. Growing up in Brisbane our garden was a tropical jungle. We were always in the garden, and I was raised to value lush green spaces. After working in sales for ten years, I finally pursued my love for plants and eventually gained a spot in the Royal Botanic Gardens Apprenticeship Program in Sydney, and the rest is history. I’ve since worked at the National Arboretum, and now Floriade. It’s certainly a ‘pinch yourself’ moment for me.

What is your favourite part of Floriade?

After two years of COVID related cancellations, Floriade is back to celebrate its 35th year. In the lead up to the event, we sat down with Floriade’s new head gardener, Tim Howard, to find out what we can expect to see when Australia’s biggest celebration of spring returns to Canberra’s Commonwealth Park for the first time since 2019.

How did you become a horticulturist? Have you always had a green thumb?

What can people expect at Floriade this year?

It would have to be the look on people’s faces when they see the sheer volume of stunning flowers in one place. I think this year will have record-breaking numbers because people have been deprived of the event for the last two years. I love how unique the event is, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.

23

The theme this year is Sounds of Spring, and the event will feature beautiful traditional garden bed layouts with plenty of sweeping shapes. We have planted 500,000 bulbs and 500,000 native plants. All by hand! There will be lots of live music, cultural celebrations, food and wine, horticultural workshops, market traders, and art on display. Will we be seeing some flower features around the suburbs of Canberra again this year? Yes! 300,000 bulbs and native plants were distributed to the community for various suburbs around Canberra. You can find them at local shopping centres and other community locations. It was nice to see them on display for the public during the previous lockdowns when Floriade was cancelled, but it will be even better now that people can enjoy seeing them around town in addition to the main event this year.

Tim Howard: Floriade Head Gardener INTERVIEW

All of the compost! One thing I learned coming to Canberra was how different the soil is down here in the cooler climate. My first piece of advice for anyone starting out is to get as much compost as you can from a landscape or garden centre and just dump it wherever you want to start a garden to improve the soil in advance. And of course, regular watering through summer if possible.

24 - Tim Howard, Floriade Head Gardener

Embrace all of your study subjects and immerse yourself in the science behind gardening. When you learn the science behind a garden, you will find that it underpins all of the planning and actions you need to take to create the ideal environment for plants to flourish.

Floriade returns to Commonwealth Park in Canberra from Saturday 17 September until Sunday 16 October 2022. Entry is free and the gates are open between 9am and 5:30pm daily.

"I’ve since worked at the National Arboretum, and now Floriade. It’s certainly a ‘pinch yourself’ moment for me."

What is your top tip for those who are trying to improve their garden at home?

floriadeaustralia.com

Finally, what advice would you give anyone just starting out in their horticulture career?

Surf's up in the Bay

We are delighted to announce that Abode Malua Bay is now an official sponsor of the Batemans Bay Surf Life Saving Club Nipper and Junior Activity Program.

The Batemans Bay Surf Live Saving Club is a volunteer run organisation, and new community members of all ages and abilities are always welcome to join. B ased at Malua Bay Beach, located just metres from Abode Malua Bay, the Batemans Bay Surf Life Saving Club Nipper and Junior Activity program aims to increase surf and beach awareness, water safety, and community sport participation within the Far South Coast Region of NSW. Abode Malua Bay is proud to be supporting the community club and program as they work hard to rebuild following the devastation caused by the 2019 bushfires and the pandemic. Since 1970, the Batemans Bay Surf Life Saving Club has served the Malua Bay Beach on weekends and public holidays over the summer months, and assisted Marine Rescue, SES and local police with emergency rescue callouts year-round. The club’s dedicated members have received recognition at state and national levels for their efforts. For the Nippers, aged between 5 and 13 years old, the beach is the classroom. The club’s junior members gain confidence by passing practical tests across swimming, body boarding, beach sprints, dolphindiving, identifying rip currents, and of course, through experiencing the challenges and rewards that come with working as part of a team. batemansbaysurflifesavingclub.com Their training is delivered by experienced members from within the club and the broader Far South Coast branch of Surf Life Saving.

42Canine-friendly fun from Canberra to the coast

Canberra’s famous Mount Ainslie Kokoda Track delivers panoramic views that never cease to amaze, including breathtaking scenes of Lake Burley Griffin and the city that surrounds it.

At the summit, you’ll find some picnic tables to pause at for a post-climb snack, and a water fountain so that you and your pup can rehydrate.

Merely a six-minute drive from Abode Malua Bay sits Circuit Beach; a small, secluded beach providing 24 hours of off-leash enjoyment for your pup. Parking here is limited, so be sure to visit early in the morning or later in the day to beat the crowds.

43

If you find yourself motivated by food (no judgements here!), then it’s worth noting that this particular walk offers a café at the summit, serving fresh coffee and breakfast classics. But that’s not the only appeal of this red dirt walking track nestled among the bushland. It’s also made special by the impressive views it provides of Woden’s Town Centre, Molonglo Valley and Lake Burley Griffin.

Kicking off its centenary season in style, Cricket ACT unveiled a brand-new logo, marking its first rebrand in over twenty years.
