Y OF ALABAMA! We are so thankful to have the opportunity to share a glance of life at the Capstone. The A-Book is unique on our campus, because it is written entirely by students, for students. This tradition began in 1908 as a guidebook for students. Publication ended in 1968, but began again last year. We are proud to be the second group in our generation to bring you the A-Book. While things on campus are always evolving, we have found a way to incorporate old traditions with new technologies. The seven of us come from different backgrounds, but we all share a passion for this great University that we can’t wait to share with you. This guide will take you through University resources, student life, traditions and community surroundings. We hope you find it to be a useful

tool throughout your years here, whether it’s looking up a good place to eat freshman year, or checking off “50 Things to Do Before You Graduate” senior year. Much of this is information we wish we had known, and all of it will be integral to your student experience at the Capstone. As you build your home away from home at UA, we hope the A-Book can assist you in your transition to campus. On Oct. 8, 1930, Coach Wallace Wade’s football team became the first to be associated with the elephant mascot. Everett Strupper, a sportswriter for the Atlanta Journal wrote, “At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble: there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, ‘Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,’ and out stamped this Alabama varsity.” It wasn’t until 1979 that the elephant mascot, Big Al, debuted at the Sugar Bowl.

Get on your feet and sing the fight song after every touchdown! Stay until the end of the game and sing “Rammer Jammer” after every win! The cheer comes from Alabama’s state bird, the yellowhammer, and our school newspaper in the 1920’s, The Rammer-Jammer. Other fan favorites played at athletic events include “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Dixieland Delight” and “Sweet Caroline.”

MILLION DOLLAR BAND

The Million Dollar Band has been a Crimson Tide tradition for more than 100 years. The band’s name was coined when an Atlanta sports writer commented to football manager, W.C. Pickens, “You don’t have much of a team, what do you have at Alabama?” Pickens replied, “A Million Dollar Band.” Today the band is comprised of over 400 members, including the Crimsonettes and Color Guard.

WHY HOUNDSTOOTH?

There is no doubt you will see houndstooth all over campus, especially on game day, but why? The origin of houndstooth at UA comes from legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. During each game, Bryant wore a houndstooth hat on the Alabama sideline. He was loved by Alabama fans and the Crimson Tide won six national championships and 14 SEC championships during his coaching career. Since then, his tradition of wearing houndstooth on game day has lived on.

HISTORY OF

“CRIMSON TIDE” Our beloved football team was not always known as the “Crimson Tide.” In 1907, Birmingham-Age Herald Sports Editor Hugh Roberts inspired the name that would stick. When Bama overcame all odds to tie Auburn in the Iron Bowl, Roberts reported that the “Thin Red Line” held Auburn to a 6-6 tie in a “sea of red.” Other sports writers picked up on the “Tide” reference and the “Crimson Tide” was born. Another story claims the name came from the image of the team running onto the field in their crimson jerseys resembling a tide approaching the shore.

HONORS WEEK

Honors Week is a long-standing tradition at the Capstone which celebrates the outstanding academic accomplishments and induction into honor societies. During this week in April, scholarship and leadership is honored through special events and ceremonies. Classes are generally dismissed on the Friday of Honors Week. The week is concluded with the Tapping on the Mound ceremony that takes place on the historical ruins of Franklin Hall Dormitory.

Before each fall semester, new students gather for convocation to kick-start their academic career. This ceremony symbolizes your entrance into the academic community at UA. Just as graduation commencement ceremonies serve as a ritual marking the completion of study, convocation is a ritual to signal the beginning of your college career.

YOUR FIRST Y Adjusting to the new atmosphere, culture and academics of college can be overwhelming, but first-year students have resources available to them every step of the way! First Year Experience (FYE) supports the academic and social transition of freshmen and transfer students. Freshman Forum: A program focused on leadership building and civic engagement. Ignite UA: Freshmen and transfer students work to build a stronger campus community. Out 2 Lunch: Take your professor to lunch, and learn more than you ever could in the classroom. Swipe your ACT Card and your professorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meal will be reimbursed. Peer Leaders: You may see these upperclassmen in your first-year classes. They serve as mentors and role models, so get to know them! Tau Sigma National Honor Society: Connect with other transfer students in this academic organization. Transfer students with a 3.5 GPA or higher will be invited to join. Camp 1831: A 3-day program at an off-campus camp site. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t attend your first year, you can join the student leadership team known as The A-Team!
