Cantilever A seating surface designed for outdoor urban living.
Professional Clients This eleven week project involved receiving input, constraints, and manufacturing process feedback from Architectural Elements, which is a design and fabrication company in Bellingham, Washington.
Problem Ideation Based upon During the ideation research, phase, paperitand became woodapparent sketch models that lots were of municipal fixtures constructed, reviewed, don’t and balance refined. infrastructure and nature well. There is either a mass of unregulated vegetation or there is too much concrete and it might as well be inside.
Concept Presentation The top concepts from the ideation phase were selected to present to Architectural Elements. The concepts were rated on feasibility and marketability and eventually two were selected to explore further.
Refinement The concept underwent several stages of refinement from paper models, to foam core, and finally into Solidowrks for a fully described form.
Build To better understand the form, a quarter scale appearance model was made out of aluminum and cherry wood.
Cantilever In outdoor public spaces such as parks where nature is so important, this design celebrates that importance by physically supporting those who choose to sit on it with plant life. The Cantilever Bench was designed to help people get closer to nature in a way that still fits with modern architecture.
Pearlescent The goal of Pearlescent was to explore how abstract forms could be turned into functional elements to be used as a desk lamp.
Form Explorations Paper was used to explore planar forms. These explorations were evaluated and elements were chosen to explore further.
Lamp Forms Elements of the previous forms were cut apart, rotated, and altered with the idea of a lamp in mind.
Build Capturing the quality of the paper models was important in the final design. A lot of time was spent learning how to make compound curves work in acrylic and making the connections to other materials look authentic.
Pearlescent Steel, Acrylic, Compact Fluorescent
Hoist As part of the Mt. Baker Plywood Competition, Hoist was produced to give the employees of a local business a place to put their belongings during the day.
Ideation With the constraint of a 4x4 sheet of furniture grade plywood, ideations focused on how to make rectilinear forms beautiful, connections, and functional elements.
Models In the 3D phase, the sketches were refined and better proportions were discovered.
Build To construct the modular components, the rough shapes were cut using a CNC wood cutting table. The pieces were finished with a table saw and glued together.
Hoist Designed for the Max Higbee Center and their staff. These wall mounted organizers are capable of holding a backpack, lunch, and other small materials that might be needed.
Peck A bird feeder made from recycled wine bottles and glass pot lids.
Materials Part of the challenge with Peck was to minimize using new materials. These materials were chosen because of their perceived value and their inability to be recycled in some cases.

Lifecycle Analysis In the case of pan lids, the shatter resistant glass that is used doesn’t melt at the same temperature as other glass. This makes the lids nearly impossible to recycle. For wine bottles, the process of recycling old bottles to new ones is very energy intensive. In both cases, it is more environmentally responsible to repurpose the materials, using far less energy and space in landfills.

Retail To gain insight into the viability of this product, a limited run of 20 units were made by hand to be sold at a local design shop. Peck did very well, earning over $600 in revenue on opening night.
Peck The Peck bird feeder has been crafted with glass pot lids and white wine bottles. These two commonly discarded materials are often overlooked as viable post consumer materials. Both consistently outlive their primary use and both are consistently recycled or thrown away. When combined, they produce a beautiful bird feeder that will keep birds fed and look great doing it.
Create This project focused on furniture designs that inspires creativity in kids. This group based venture allowed for deep exploration into children’s furniture and made it possible to observe the final design in use.
The Problem One of the cornerstones of being young is that you can create a game out of anything. Whether it’s a living room rug, or a coffee cup. Divergent thinking has often been used by psychologists to assess a person’s level of creativity. What’s interesting is that as kids get older their ability to perform divergent thinking reduces drastically. Some of the world’s most innovative thinkers test highly in divergent thinking and we believe that there is value in fostering a space that encourages divergent thinking in kids.
Ideation Several weeks were dedicated to sketching potential forms and methods for creating a private space through furniture.
Models Based on the ideations, models were made from a variety of materials until a final form was discovered.
Build The final design included working with wire, silicone, plywood, foam, and fabric. To ensure the best end result, each group member took on an area of focus.
Create The final product is designed to allow kids to build forts, have a place to play, and have an area of separation from the rest of the room. It was also designed to fit into people’s houses in a way that is unobtrusive enough to be in a shared space.
Create To gauge the success of this product, it was taken to a local daycare where about 20 four to seven year olds played with three Create modules. It was clear from the moment the kids were introduced to them that the product was a successful implementation of the concept.
Circa This User Experience focused group project was concerned with designing concepts that would aid with collaboration in the next five years. The multidisciplinary group partnered with Microsoft for consulting and guidance.

Visual Design The final design encourages the user to interact, and has a distinctly friendly appearance. However, it is neutral enough to be appropriate for any size or type of event users might create. Gestures are intuitive, familiar, and smooth
