Remodeling Tips This Home & Garden Guide provides you with local businesses who can help you with a home remodeling project. Whether you want to totally remodel a room or do some landscaping projects in your yard, these experts are here to assist you! Below are some general tips if you are considering remodeling your home! 1: If you are being your own General Contractor, keep an expandable folder (“redwell”) with individual folders inside for each trade. Examples: “Plumbing”, “Electricity”, “Tile”, etc. 2: Remember local building codes require a certain number of electrical outlets in a room. However, some electricians will slap the receptacles into the walls in an unattractive configuration when you consider where the phone and cable jacks are going. Tell your electrician exactly where you want the outlets and jacks to be (and how high you want them as well). This is especially true if you have an idea where you want your furniture to go and you want to hide the outlets and jacks behind the furniture. 3: Be sure that your painter saves you some paint in the cans for touch-ups and duplication. Also order an extra tile or two or extra pieces of flooring should you need to replace one later. 4: Before the plumber (or any contractor, for that matter) digs into the ground, you need to call your local utility locator service to come out and mark the underground utilities. This will prevent your contractor from accidentally digging into and damaging the existing services. If you neglect to have the utilities marked, you could face very large repair bills that the utility companies will require you to pay. 5: One of the classic home remodeling tips is to maximize resale value by spending your money “where the water is”. This means kitchens and bathrooms. Also, having a good trim carpenter install fine crown molding, etc. can really dress up your house. In the photos the dining room wall was removed and an island added to kitchen layout. Hardwood floors replaced carpet and tile replaced parquet floor.

How will you Celebrate the Week of the Young Child? By Stacy Brundage, Ed.D.

The Week of the Young Child (WOYC) is an annual celebration created by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world’s largest early childhood association serving children from birth to age eight, with nearly 90,000 members and a network of over 300 local, state and regional affiliates (NAEYC, 2010). The date for the WOYC is April 10-16, 2011. Since 1971, the purpose of the WOYC has been to concentrate on the needs of young children, families and to recognize early childhood professionals who care for young children. This is a time where communities throughout the nation stop to plan how we will better meet the needs of young children and families. The theme for 2011 is Early Years are Learning Years. This is so true because young children ages zero to eight years old can absorb an enormous amount of information. Their brains are growing so rapidly so these years are optimal in terms of preparing them for school and beyond. Because of the growth that the brains experience by the time a child reaches 36 months, it is imperative that parents as well as early childhood programs work together to enhance a child’s growth and development. Here are some free activities that parents can do at home to celebrate the

Week of the Young Child: *Take your child to the library and get a library card *Turn of f the television for at least one hour and spend that time playing with your child/ren *Increase physical activities by going to the park or playing in your back-

yard *Sit down and have a discussion at dinner time (let your child select the topic) *Have a Book Character Day where your child dresses as his favorite character (then you can reenact the story) *Encourage manners, taking turns and sharing as often as possible *Create a song using your child’s name *Create a scavenger hunt for colors, words, or letters *Help your child create a thank-you card for his teacher *Celebrate any milestone that your child has accomplished (learning an important skill or concept such as sharing or jumping) with a treat that your child will enjoy Finally, as parents, know that you are your child’s first teacher. Use the WOYC as a springboard to continue and celebrate the educational experiences you have in place at home. Additionally, use the week to show appreciation to the early childhood professionals who assist in your child’s growth and development.

Celebrate Early Education in Rockdale County Rockdale County PACE (*Partners Advancing Childhood Education) is celebrating April as Month of the Young Child—a statewide campaign to focus attention on early child care issues. Research shows the early years of education are the most critical in a child’s development, especially because more than 90 percent of a child’s intellect, personality and social skills form before age three.

The following are Four Ways You Can Support Early Learners in Rockdale County: 1. Book Drive: Visit Roly Poly (1745 Hwy 138) each Tuesday during April and donate a book. Each donating patron will receive a FREE drink. 2. Family Game Night: Rockdale’s Georgia Pre-K Transition Coaches will sponsor a FREE Family Game Night for area families on Tuesday, April 12 at 1400 Parker Road from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. 3. Parade: The Head Start ‘Hands on Literacy’ Parade will roll through Olde Town Conyers on Friday, April 15 at 10 a.m. 4. Transition Walk: Pre-School students and teachers from the Early Learning Center at Rockdale Career Academy will participate in a Transition Walk from their school to the Nancy Guinn Library on Friday, April 29 to emphasize the importance of school readiness for pre-k children.

*Rockdale County Partners Advancing Childhood Education (PACE) is a public/private collaboration between United Way, Smart Start Georgia, Rockdale County Public School and independent early education providers. For more information, call: 678-623-2856 or email: kdaniels@uwma.org.

CRAZY FOR YOU™ is the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930’s playboy, who’s dream in life is to dance. And despite the serious efforts of his mother and soon-to-be-ex-fiancee, Bobby achieves his dream! Memorable Gershwin tunes include I Can’t Be Bothered Now, Bidin’ My Time, I Got Rhythm, Naughty Baby, They Can’t Take That Away from Me, But Not for Me, Nice Work if You Can Get It, Embraceable You and Someone to Watch Over Me. It’s a high energy comedy which includes mistaken identity, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music and was a Tony Award winning show!

“Stress Busters” for the Sandwich Generation You may be too busy to realize it, but April is Stress Awareness Month. Sponsored by the Health Resource Network, a nonprofit health education group, Stress Awareness Month is designed to promote awareness about ways to reduce stress in our lives. And if you’re a member of the so-called “Sandwich Generation,” you may well have plenty of stress to deal with — especially financial stress. And that’s why you may want to look at this month as an opportunity to explore ways of “de-stressing” yourself. To understand the scope of the problem facing people in your situation, consider this: One out of every eight Americans aged 40 to 60 is raising a child while caring for an aging parent, according to the Pew Research Center. The definition of “eldercare” can range from having the parent living in one’s home to helping pay for the parent’s stay in an assisted living or nursing home facility. When you consider the costs involved in this type of care, added to the expenses of raising your children and possibly even providing some financial support to them as young adults, it’s easy to see how you could potentially face enormous strains, both emotionally and financially. To help ease this burden, consider these suggestions: * Save. As a Sandwich Generation member, you’re probably within shouting distance of your own retirement — so you need to save for it. This may not be easy. You don’t know how much financial support you may someday have to provide your elderly parents — and even after your children are grown, they may need some help from you.

Elly Dalton

Unfortunately, in helping these “boomerang” children, many people disrupt their day-to-day cash flow and raid their savings. That’s why it’s important to try to “pay yourself first” by deferring part of each paycheck into a 401(k) and by automatically moving money each month from your checking or savings account into an IRA. * Talk. Many people in the “Greatest Generation” (over age 80) have not even prepared a will. If your parents are in that group, you may want to talk to them about taking action. Also, find out who, if anyone, is handling their investments. And ask if your parents understand how Medicare works and if they need to add supplemental health insurance, such as Medigap. Plus, you need to find out if your parents have created a power of attorney or health care directive. It’s best to have these conversations sooner rather than later. * Delegate. You eventually may have to take some responsibility for your parents’ care — but you don’t have to do it alone. You could, for example, work with a financial services provider that offers trust services, which can be invaluable if your parents are incapacitated and useful even if they aren’t. A professional trust officer can, among other duties, help manage your parents’ investments, pay their bills, keep their records and supervise distribution of their assets to beneficiaries. In short, a qualified trust officer can make life a lot easier for you. Stress Awareness Month lasts only 30 days, but by taking the right steps, you can de-stress yourself for many years to come. After all, just because you’re in the Sandwich Generation, it doesn’t mean you have to be “squished.”
