by Jessica Smith My strategy going in to Sharon’s Southern Cuisine’s bountiful buffet was to graze. That just wasn’t in deference to the rapid approach of swimsuit season, but also so I could report comprehensively on all of their savory selections. So much for that plan! Hands down, the best collard greens and mac n’ cheese I’ve ever had - no offense to Grandma Williamson, God rest her soul. The fried chicken was everything it should be and more. I managed to tear myself away to sample the baked chicken. Surprisingly, this wasn’t a sacrifice as the seasoning was outstanding with a hint of a kick to it. The other selections that day were meatloaf, pulled pork, prime rib, fried fish, salmon patties, plus candied yams, green beans, creamed corn and some cold salads to round those out. Then there’s the red velvet, pound and hummingbird cakes, peach cobbler and banana pudding…an embarrassment of riches. Besides the delicious fare, Sharon’s has atmosphere to spare. This isn’t your mama’s buffet, a trough with bad lighting. It’s a charming, airy Victorian home where you can enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail – a big departure from other buffet-style joints. The buffet has its own room, plus two other freshly decorated dining rooms, as well as a separate lounge complete with pool table and big-screen TV. Upstairs are several private dining areas perfect for corporate functions or a bridal shower. Sharon Satterwhite’s aim was to accommodate and welcome a variety of diners from date night to girls’ night to family meals. “This building is a historic landmark that was sitting empty. The southern cooking fit into the scheme of the house. It was a blessing from God,” she said. Her other motivation was to put people to work. She says she and her partner, Dr. Robert L. Vinson, also her pastor, are lucky to be surrounded with a great team. The food owes its heritage to the chefs’ family recipes, Eleanor Johnson and Conyers native, Cindi Upton and Tonya Quinn. Ms. Satterwhite, trying to perfect a winning formula, has gone to a new schedule. Sharon’s is closed Monday. On Tuesday,Wednesday and Saturday an a la carte menu featuring their most popular foods is served. Buffets resume Thursday, Friday and Sunday. In response to tightening budgets, Sharon is bringing back the “2 for 1” deal which will apply to all buffets, except on Friday nights, when they offer their seafood buffet, and on holidays. Fear not a large spread of good ‘ole Southern food…it actually motivated me to go for a long run so I could come back again - soon. About Your County Government Keep Conyers-Rockdale Beautiful to Host Community Cleanup and Recycling Events • Electronics Recycling Drive – Saturday, June 5 • Rivers Alive – Saturday, October 16 Keep Conyers-Rockdale Beautiful (KCRB) will be hosting an E-Recycle Day Event on Saturday, June 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This event gives citizens a chance to dispose of electronic items at no charge. All items will be recycled, rather than add to the growing landfill space problems. The event will be held in the parking lot of the Rockdale County Government Annex, located at 1400 Parker Road. The electronics listed below are accepted during the drive, regardless of working order. Volunteers will be on hand to unload all items so citizens do not even have to get out of their cars. The only items accepted at the E-Recycle Drive are the following: - Computer monitors - Computer CPUs - Laptops - Printers - Cell phones - Disk drives - Keyboards - Copiers - Floppy drives - Record players - Typewriters - Stereos - Fax machines - 8-Tracks - Microwaves - VCRs - Video machines - Camcorders - Cameras - Projectors - Circuit boards - UPS/Battery back-up - Computer Mice - Telephones - CB radios - Scanners - CD ROMS - Keyboards - Test & network equipment - Televisions will be accepted for $10 each
In the fall, Conyers/Rockdale County residents will wade into local rivers, creeks and lakes on October 16 as part of the continuing statewide campaign to clean and preserve over 70,000 miles of Georgia’s rivers and streams. The effort will be part of Rivers Alive, a joint program of the State Environmental Protection Division and Keep Georgia Beautiful. An appreciation luncheon, including free lunch and giveaways, will be held after the cleanup for all volunteers.
