October is Breast Cancer month. This is a time when we encourage those who are fighting this terrible disease, honor those who have beaten this scourge, and pay tribute to others who have lost their lives to breast cancer. Today, Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths among American women. And while we are making significant strides toward earlier detection and more aggressive treatments, there is still a lot more that we can do. According to the CDC’s most recent statistics (1999 – 2006) of uninsured women between the ages of 50 and 74, only 56 percent of these women had a mammogram within the previous two years. Even more alarming was the fact that a full 16 percent of insured women in that age group did not receive a mammogram within the same time period. Women of low socioeconomic status, those with less than a high school education, women of American Indian decent and native Alaskan women are all less likely to receive adequate breast cancer screening. As a community, it is our job to find ways to remove the barriers that prevent women from receiving adequate breast cancer screening. There are already many good programs in the Metro Atlanta area that provide free or reduced cost mammograms throughout the year. However, many of these programs go underutilized and far too many women that need this service do not avail themselves of this opportunity. So this October I challenge each of you to identify someone in your community and encourage her to have a mammogram.
